Iola B. Hopkins

Iola B. Hopkins, 86, of 24 Spring Pond Circle, York, died Thursday, June 5, 2003, at York Hospital after a long illness.

She was born in Sioux Falls, S.D. on June 29, 1916, the daughter of Jacob and Sara (Spies) Langmoe. She was a graduate of Russell, Minn., schools and later obtained a certificate of accounting.

Mrs. Hopkins had resided in Pearl River, N.Y., for 60 years, moving to York in 1998.

She was the treasurer for the Ramapo School District in Spring Valley, N.Y., for 10 years.

She was a communicant of St. Christopher-by-the-Sea Church of York and had assisted with altar care of the church. She was a former communicant of St. Margaret Church in Pearl River, N.Y., and a member of the Altar Society. Mrs. Hopkins was active as a member of the Village Quilters in York and made crafts for the church Christmas Fair. She was also a member of the Gad About Bowling League at Bowl-O-Rama in Portsmouth, N.H.

She was predeceased by her husband, Jerome C. Hopkins, who died in 1995.

Survivors include her son, Dennis M. Hopkins and his wife, Toni of Stratham, N.H.; one sister, Lenice Matthiesen of Forsythe, Mo.; three grandsons, Michael Hopkins, Patrick Hopkins and Christopher Hopkins and his wife, Melissa; two granddaughters, Kayla and Samantha Hopkins.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Monday in St. Christopher Church, York St., York, with Interment Tuesday, in St. Anthony’s Cemetery, Nanuet, N.Y. Arrangements by Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York.

Alan Macaulay Merrill

Alan M. Merrill, 66, of Riverwood Drive, York, died Saturday, June 7, 2003, at Massachusetts General Hospital following a brief illness.

Born Sept. 29, 1936, to Everett and Mary (Macaulay) Merrill in Concord, N.H. He was raised in Concord and attended Concord High School, Kimball Union Academy and Yale University.

Alan lived in Acton, Mass., and worked for more than 30 years as an engineer at the Polaroid Corp. He was a member of the Concord-Acton Squash Club.

Alan will be remembered for his willingness to volunteer for a good cause.

He was predeceased by his parents, and a brother, Norman Merrill.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Jane F. Merrill, of York; three daughters, Sarah Bishop Merrill of Cambridge, Mass., Elizabeth Jelliffe and her husband Christoph of London, England, and Mary Macaulay Merrill of Arlington, Mass.; one brother, Calvin Merrill of Wyckoff, N.J.; one sister, Judy Hurley of North Conway, N.H.; one sister-in-law, Constance Merrill of Portsmouth, N.H., and a special step-mother, Hazel Merrill of Machias.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, June 12, at 2 p.m. in the Kittery Point First Congregational Church, 23 Pepperrell Road, Kittery Point. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Bishop House at Kimball Union Academy, P.O. Box 188, Main St., Meriden, NH 03770-0188.

William J. "Wilbur" Parent

William J. "Wilbur" Parent, 46, of Ferry Lane in York, died Saturday, June 7, 2003, at York Hospital.

Born on Oct. 26, 1956, in Baltimore, Md., he was a son of Robert P. and Grace (Mills) Parent of Portsmouth, N.H. Growing up, he attended schools in Sanford and lived for a time in Kittery.

"Wild Bill" as he was known to so many who knew him, was never known to idle for long, whether it was traveling across the country as he did a number of times by car, motorcycle or thumb, you were sure his "Itchy Feet" would carry him where he needed to go. During his travels you were sure to find him enjoying nature, camping, fishing which he enjoyed with his brother as they grew up, or at a party enjoying the company of old or new found friends. He enjoyed friendships with a number of fellow motorcyclers in several clubs across the country.

As those who knew him can attest, his frequent statement "I’m just me" led him forward in life: "not straight, but forward." His proud and honest demeanor was appreciated by those who were fortunate enough to get close to him. He loved animals and dearly missed his bloodhound dog "Gangster."

His family will hold dear the memories of a young man who would shine shoes, to buy things for others and enjoy swimming with is brothers and sister in the Little River Swimming hole.

The time he most recently spent with his best friend and light of his life, Mary Freitas both here in Maine and in Fall River will be cherished forever.

He is survived by, his family who will miss him dearly, his parents, Robert P. and Grace V. (Mills) Parent of Portsmouth, N.H.; his sister, Eleanor Spinney and her husband, David, of North Berwick; his brothers, Bob Parent of York, and Pat Parent of Rochester, N.H.; his friend and lover Mary Freitas of Fall River, Mass.; six nieces and a nephew, as well as his great-niece.

A funeral was held Tuesday, June 10 at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, Kittery.

Mary J. Phillips

Mrs. Mary J. Phillips, 88, formerly of 256 Laconia Road, Tilton, N.H., died on Friday, May 23, 2003, at the Belknap County Nursing Home.

She was the widow of Linwood G. Phillips, who died on May 3, 1990.

Mrs. Phillips was born March 3, 1915, in West Stewartstown, N.H., the daughter of Wesley and Myrtle (Shaw) Mills. She lived in W. Stewartstown, N.H., and graduated from Canaan (Vt.) High School in 1933.

In September of 1934, she married Linwood Phillips. They built a home on Park Street in Colebrook, N.H., and later moved to Columbia, N.H. where they lived until 1959. Their last home in the North Country was on Route 26, Dixville Notch, N.H. In 1980 they moved to Belmont, N.H.

After her husband’s death, she moved in with her son and daughter-in-law, Wilbur and Norma Phillip, in Tilton, N.H. She enjoyed their home and the array of flowers and the colors. She spent the last couple of years at the Belknap County Nursing Home.

Mrs. Phillips was a homemaker for all of her adult life. She was a good cook, loved to sew, and kept busy with crafts and also a green thumb with African violets.

Mrs. Phillips attended the Evangelical Baptist Church of Laconia.

Survivors include five sons, Wesley Phillips and his wife, Gloria, of Ilion, N.Y., Lester Phillips of Langdon, N.H., Wilbur Phillips and his wife, Norma, of Tilton, Richard Phillips and his wife, Barbara, of Georgetown,Texas, and Bradley Phillips and his wife, Sandra, of Richland, N.J.; a daughter, Linda Whipple of Sunapee, N.H.; 24 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Albert Mills of Texas; three sisters, Virginia Crawford of Groveton, N.H., Eva Stevens of Columbia, N.H. and Ethel Goodwin of Colebrook, N.H., and many nephews and nieces.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a brother, Waldo Mills and by a sister, Dorothy Mills.

A funeral service was held on Tuesday, May 27 at the Congregational Church, Colebrook, with burial following in the family lot in Village Cemetery, Colebrook.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Belknap County Nursing Home Activities Fund, 30 County Drive, Laconia, NH 03246.

John James Clarke

John James Clarke, 59, of Cape Neddick, died after a brief illness Tuesday, June 24, 2003, in Boston, Mass.

He was born in Lowell, Mass., the son of Richard and Doris Clarke. He was educated in Lowell schools. Mr. Clarke was employed by the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery.

He was an avid sportsman enjoying fresh water trout fishing, hunting and nature. He loved telling stories from his trips into the woods through out New England.

He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Carla Adams Clarke of Cape Neddick; three sons, John J. Janowicz of Lowell, Ian Clarke of Milton, N.H., and Adam Clarke of Cape Neddick; two sisters, Doris Poland of Newcomers Town, Ohio, and Eileen Wright of Port Washington, Ohio; one brother, Richard Clarke of Lakewood, N.J., and three grandchildren: John, James and Nicole Janowicz all of Lowell.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to Faith Evangelical Free Church, 54 Hosmer St., Acton, MA 01720.

Rose Teresa (Leone) Levine

Rose Teresa (Leone) Levine, 84, died on Wednesday, June 25, 2003, at the Framingham (Mass.) Union Hospital following a declining period of health.

She was born in Natick on Oct. 18, 1918, the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary (Cardellicehio) Leone.

Mrs. Levine is survived by her children, Constance Sewell and her husband, Phil, of Framingham, Jana Dwyer and her husband, Richard, of York Beach, Jean Teague and her husband, James, of Natick, Michael Levine of Milford, Denise Davis and her husband, Peter, of York Beach, and Deborah Fabiano and her husband, James, of York Beach. She was the sister of Frank Leone of Florida, Frances Ostertag of Ashland and Mary McGowan of Natick. Also survived by 10 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. She was the wife of the late Harry Levine who died in September 1997. She was the sister of the late Anthony Leone, Lee Maietta and Mike Leone.

Mrs. Leone has been a longtime resident of Framingham and previously resided in York Beach for more than 10 years. She attended the Natick schools in her youth. For many years she was a waitress with Norman’s Restaurant in Holliston prior to retiring. She was a member of Saint Patricks Church. She was active in the Oak Knoll Social Club and chairman of the raffle committee which enabled them to be self-supporting for all the activities at the nursing home. She enjoyed and was an active bingo player, enjoyed good Italian cooking. She was a devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother to her family.

Visitations will be on Saturday, June 28, from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the John C. Bryant Funeral Home, 56 Pemberton Road, (off Route 30) Cochituate Village, Wayland. Her funeral services will follow at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Quentin Sewell, retired minister of the American Baptist Convention officiating.

In lieu of flowers, her family suggests donations in Rose’s memory may be sent to the Activity Fund of Oak Knoll Nursing Home, 9 Arbetter Drive, Framingham, MA 01701 would be greatly appreciated.

Interment will follow her funeral services in the Levine family lot in Edgell Grove cemetery in Framingham.

Paul E. Nowell

Paul E. Nowell of Main Street, York Beach, husband of Elinor Nowell, died Friday, June 13, 2003, at Winter Haven (Fla.) Hospital.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, Ronald N. Nowell of Cape Neddick; a daughter, Mrs. David (Polly) Dean of Frostburg, Md.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A private graveside service will be held. A public memorial service will be held at a later date to be announced. Arrangements by the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, York.

Mary Patricia (Pat) Ranta

Mary Patricia (Pat) Ranta of Ogunquit, formerly of Paxton, died Saturday, June 14, 2003, at her home, after a long battle with cancer. She was 74 years old.

She is survived by her husband, Frank Ranta, of Ogunquit; her sons, David Ranta, of York and John Ranta of Princeton, Mass.; her daughters, Judith Ranta of White Plains, N.Y., Mary Ellen Robinson of Rutland, Mass., Christine Ranta of York, and Cynthia Emerson of Cape Neddick; her brothers, Richard Mullaney, Paul Mullaney, Harold Mullaney and Gerald Mullaney; her sister Doris Marengo; as well as 11 grandchildren.

Born April 12, 1929, in Worcester, Mass., she was the daughter of Doris and Augustus Mullaney. She grew up in Worcester and moved to Paxton as a teenager, where she edited the "Paxton Pump," a town newsletter that was sent to all of the local men and boys serving overseas in World War II. She attended Classical High School and then Becker Junior College, where she studied business administration.

As a teenager, she managed her parents’ soda shop in Tatnuck. After college, she worked in office administration at Paul Revere Life Insurance and Sawyer’s Lumber in Worcester as well as Sears Roebuck in Seattle, Wash., where she moved when her husband, Frank, took a job with Boeing in 1949. After moving back to Paxton in 1951, she set aside her business career to begin a family.

While her children were growing up, she served as a den leader for many years in the Brownies and Girl Scouts in Paxton. In addition, she did volunteer work for the Paxton PTA and St. Columba’s Church. After her children were grown, she resumed her business career, building on her lifelong love of knitting and sewing to start her own business, the Needle People Place. Her shop in Tatnuck Square in Worcester was the focal point for knitters and needle-pointers throughout Worcester County for 10 years, and she was also a founding member of the Tatnuck Businessmen’s Association.

She relocated her shop to Ogunquit when she moved there in 1984. While living in Ogunquit, she had been a coordinator at Laudholm Farms and Meals on Wheels, as well as a member of St. Mary’s Parish of Wells and the Senior Center of Lower Village of Kennebunk. She also was an avid bridge player and belonged to many clubs.

A memorial mass followed by a luncheon will be held at St. Mary’s Church in Wells at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 21, 2003. The family is requesting that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Senior Center of Lower Village, 175 Port Road, Kennebunk, ME 04043.

Bibber Memorial Chapel in Wells is directing arrangements.

William D. Frommer

William D. Frommer, 49, of 185 Blue Heron Drive, Portsmouth, N.H., died Thursday, June 19, 2003, at the Maine Medical Center in Portland, as the result of an accident on a construction project.

Born in New Jersey on Jan. 6, 1954, he was the son of Marion (Porter) Frommer and the late William E. Frommer.

Mr. Frommer served in the United States Navy retiring in 1993 with 20 years of service to his country. He had been a resident of Portsmouth since 1997.

In addition to his mother, of Lenox, Mass., he is survived by his wife of 29 years, Deborah (McCue) Frommer; three sons, Chris Frommer of Portsmouth, Eric Frommer of Orlando, Fla., and Jeff Frommer of Portsmouth; two grandchildren, William and Cheyenne Frommer; a sister, Diane Romeo of Lenox, Mass., and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be private. Burial will be in the family lot in St. Ann cemetery in Lenox, Mass.

James F. Fullerton

James F. Fullerton, 55, of York Beach, died June 16, 2003, in York. Formerly of Medford, Mass., Stoneham, Mass., and Southington, Conn. Beloved husband of Nancy (Linden) Fullerton. Devoted father of Michael Fullerton and his wife Laura of Alexandria, Va., Kerri Fullerton of York Beach, and Peter Fullerton of York Beach. Beloved son of Walter and Mary (Holland) Fullerton of Stoneham, Mass. Loving brother of Patricia Curtis of North Reading, Mass., Margaret Brandt of York, Robert Fullerton of Wilmington, Mass., and the late John Fullerton of Stoneham, Mass.

A funeral Mass was held in St. Christopher Church in York on Friday, June 20. Donations in his memory may be made to the York Hospital Building Fund, Development Office, 15 Hospital Drive, York, ME 03909.
