Julie Upham

Julie Upham, 59, of 543 Shore Drive, Laconia, N.H., died on July 15, 2003, at Lakes Region Hospital.

Born in Lynn, Mass., Sept. 23, 1943, the daughter of Norman C. and Virginia M. (Naugle) Upham, she grew up in York. Miss Upham attended York schools and graduated from Rogers Hall in Lowell, Mass., in 1961. She received a bachelor of arts degree in American studies from Skidmore College in 1965.

Having served in college as editor-in-chief of the weekly Skidmore News and staff member of other student publications, she went on to a career in journalism, beginning in 1965 with the Everett (Mass.) Times Publishing Co. and briefly with Minuteman Publications in Lexington, Mass. She then joined the Medford (Mass.) Daily Mercury for 13 years as a general assignment reporter and another eight years as managing editor.

Miss Upham came to The Laconia Citizen in 1988 as editor of special sections, later becoming wire, community and news editor. From 1999 until her illness, she served as night editor. When the paper instituted an expanded History Section in early 1999, she designed the format for the new section, which she continued to edit until the time of her death.

Always interested in the history and culture of her community, she was a life member, former vice president and member of the board of directors of the Royall House Association in Medford.

In Laconia, she was a member of the board of directors of the Laconia Historical and Museum Society and until last fall had served as secretary for more than a decade. A trustee of the Belknap Mill Society for more than a decade, she was instrumental in organizing several annual events, including the Nearly New sale each spring and the annual anniversary celebrations. She had been a member of the Executive Committee of the trustees since 1997. The society recognized her contributions by designating her a Bell Ringer and inducted her into the Peter S. Karagianis Society. In 1996, she received the Governor’s Volunteer Award.

She was a longtime member of the Friends of the New Hampshire Music Festival. In that capacity, she had coordinated publicity for, and worked as a hostess at, several of the Show Houses sponsored by the Friends of the Festival. She was a member of the board of directors of the Friends.

A member of the Congregational Church of Laconia (UCC), she was a member of its Friendship Club, for which she served as secretary for almost 10 years. She had also served on the Altar Committee and Music Committee.

For a number of years, Miss Upham served as alumni admissions contact for Skidmore College and enjoyed her interviews locally with prospective Skidmore students.

There are no known survivors. She was predeceased by her mother in 1990 and her father in 1998.

A memorial service was held at the Laconia Congregational Church (UCC) on Friday, July 18, with Interment following at the First Parish Cemetery, York.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to one of the following: Belknap Mill Society, The Mill Plaza, Laconia, NH 03246, the New Hampshire Music Festival, 52 Symphony Lane, Center Harbor, NH 03226, the Laconia Historical and Museum Society, Inc., P.O. Box 11326, Laconia, NH 03226, or to the Old York Historical Society, P.O. Box 312, York, ME 03909.

Wilkinson-Beane Funeral Home, 164 Pleasant Street, Laconia, is in charge of the arrangements.

Mary McKenney

Mary McKenney, 83, of Clearwater, Fla., formerly of York, widow of Murray McKenney, died July 9, 2003, in Clearwater. A memorial service will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Aug. 2, 2003, at Cape Neddick Baptist Church, River Road, Cape Neddick.

Paul E. Nowell

A memorial service for Paul E. Nowell, formerly of York Beach and Winter Haven, Fla., who died June 13, 2003, will be held Friday, Aug. 1 at 3 p.m. at the Union Congregational Church, York Beach.

Mary Marvin Breckinridge Patterson

A memorial service for Mary Marvin Breckinridge Patterson (Mrs. Jefferson Patterson), a long-time resident of York, who died at her home in Washington, D.C., on Dec. 11, 2002, will be held Tuesday, Aug. 5, at 11 a.m. at Trinity Church, York Harbor. A reception following the service will be held at her previous home, "Riverhouse," also known as "Breckinridge Public Affairs Center," on Route 1 in York.

Susan S. Sulloway

Susan S. Sulloway, 78, died Wednesday, July 16, 2003, at Springbrook, a nursing facility in Westbrook.

Born in Boston on Aug. 14, 1924, she was the daughter of Donald S. Stewart and Priscilla Heffinger Stewart of South Orange, N.J. She attended Miss Baird’s School in Morristown, N.J., and Wells College in Aurora, N.Y.

Trained as a professional dancer by Agnes deMille, she danced in three Broadway musicals, "Brigadoon," "Where’s Charlie," and "Bloomer Girl," traveling from coast to coast in the United States and Canada with the road company of "Bloomer Girl," which was the last Broadway show to have its own private train. After her marriage to Alvah W. Sulloway in 1954, she continued to dance with Scottish Country Dance groups in Boston and Dunedin, Fla. She also played leading roles in Florida community theater productions of Woody Allen’s "Don’t Drink the Water" and Howard Lindsay and Russell Crouse’s "Life with Father."

After moving to Kittery Point in 1970, she took an active interest in town affairs and is remembered as the prime mover in the establishment of the Kittery Conservation Commission. Her memberships included the First Congregational Church of Kittery Point, The Society of Colonial Dames in New Hampshire, and the Piscataqua Garden Club.

She is survived by her husband, Alvah W. Sulloway; her son, Stewart Estabrook Sulloway and his wife, Melissa C. Sulloway of Bridgton; three stepsons, Alvah W. Sulloway Jr., of Morehead City, N.C., Lucien P. Sulloway of Winterthur, Switzerland and Frank J. Sulloway of Berkeley, Calif.; a brother, Donald Stewart of Shelburne, Vt., and four grandchildren in Bridgton.

A memorial service will be held at the First Congregational Church, Kittery Point, on Wednesday, Aug. 20, at 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in Susan’s memory can be made to the Quebec-Labrador Foundation, 55 South Main Street, Ipswich, MA 01938.

Elizabeth Alden Tansey

Elizabeth Alden Tansey, 93, of Waterville, died July 25, 2003, at Inland Hospital after a short illness.

Born in Boston on Aug. 12, 1909, she was the only child of Jane E. and Carleton P. Nelson. She married the late Edward E. B. Tansey in 1937.

Mrs. Tansey was a graduate of Boston’s Girls Latin School and Wheelock College. She lived in Roslindale and Newton, Mass., before moving to Central Maine in 1952. From 1995 to 1999 she lived in Kittery at the Ayers home, to be near her daughters, and enjoyed lunches at the Kittery Senior Center. Following that she resided at Goodreau’s Retirement Home in Winslow, and the Woodlands Assisted Living Facility in Waterville.

She taught at Green Acres Nursery School in Waltham, Mass., and at Little Red Riding Hood in Waterville, and in 1957 started the first kindergarten in the Winslow public schools, retiring from there in 1967. In retirement she traveled extensively in the United States visiting California, Arizona, Washington, D.C., and many other states. She also traveled in Canada, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, and twice wintered in Spain with a good friend.

She was an avid reader and in her final years greatly enjoyed watching birds.

Mrs. Tansey was a longtime member of the Mayflower Society and the Fort Halifax chapter of the DAR in Winslow for which she was a past regent. She will be remembered by many for her years as a kindergarten teacher in Winslow, where she also served one term as president of the local Teachers Association.

She is survived by her children, Barbara J. Poulin of York Beach, Marilyn T. Hamm and Peter Bland of Eliot, Edward N. and his wife, Darlene, of Winslow, and James A. and his wife, Daria, of Encinitas, Calif.; eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

At Mrs. Tansey’s request there will be no funeral or visiting hours. A private family memorial service will be held in mid-August, and a graveside gathering at the Nelson family plot at Lake View Cemetery, Livermore, on her birthday, Aug. 12. Donations may be made in her memory to the DAR Scholarship Fund, Fort Halifax Chapter, Winslow.

Kenneth L. Barrett

Kenneth L. Barrett, 42, beloved son of John and Virginia Barrett of Kennebun, was killed April 6, 2003 in a motorcycle accident near his home in San Diego, Calif.

Kenneth was a graduate of Rockland High School in Rockland, Mass., and later served in the U.S. Navy. He was the owner of The Seabreeze Dental Laboratory in San Diego and loved to fish, camp in his vintage motorhome, and spend happy spare time working on his motorcycles and antique car.

He is survived by his loving wife Dianna; a son Mathew and daughter Heather, all of San Diego. He is also survived by three brothers, John C. of Derry, N.H., Kevin of York, Daniel of Goffstown, N.H.; three sisters, Rebecca Tengwall of Portland, Ore., Lydie Kennedy of Plymouth, Mass., Mellissa Hall of Kennebunk, and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, April 11, at the Featheringill Mortuary in San Diego. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Riverside, Calif.

Marguerite J. Lane

YORK HARBOR - Marguerite J. Lane, 78, of 27 Lobster Cove Road Ext., died Monday, April 14 at her residence after a long illness.

She was born in Stoneham, Mass., the daughter of Raymond and Marguerite (LaSalle) Powers, and was a 1942 graduate of Stoneham High School.

Mrs. Lane was an adjudicator and trainer for the legal department of the Massachusetts Division of Employment Security for over 35 years.

She had formerly lived in Stoneham, Mass., moving to York Harbor in 1968. She was a communicant of St. Christopher-by-the-Sea Church of York. She was a member of the York Historical Society. Mrs. Lane enjoyed many types of dancing including, tap, line dancing and ballroom. Her passion was the time she spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a brother, Raymond Powers.

Survivors include her husband, Clifton A. Lane, of York Harbor; one son, Ellis R. Lane and his wife, Paula of Reading, Mass.; three grandchildren, Marissa Galante and her husband, James; Stephen Lane and his wife, Tiffany; and Thaya Puglisi and her husband, Wayne; seven great-grandchildren; three brothers and sisters-in-law: Robert and Maryanne Powers of Woburn, Mass.; Richard and Mary Powers of Stoneham, Mass.; and Ralph and Gail Powers of Medfield; two sisters and brothers-in-law: Phyllis and Edward Pearson and Martha and Jack Downs all of Stoneham, Mass.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, in St. Christopher’s Church, York Street, York with visitation from 9 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. at the funeral home. Public visitation will be held Tuesday from 5 to 9 p.m. at the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, 20 Walnut St., Wellesley, MA 02481 or the American Cancer Society, 1 Main St., Topsham, ME 04086.

Katherine A. Norton

Katherine A. Norton, 91, of 29 Locust Lane, South Berwick, formerly of Mountain Road, Cape Neddick, died Monday, April 7, 2003, at her residence after a long illness.

She was born on Nov. 13, 1911, in York, the daughter of Joseph and Julia (Moulton) Briley, and attended York schools.

She managed summer properties in Ogunquit and worked as a private housekeeper for many years.

Mrs. Norton had been a member of the Agamenticus Christian Church. She had lived in the Agamenticus Village area her whole life and was known as the Pillar of Agamenticus Village. She enjoyed going to yard sales and was an avid card player. She loved people and spent much of her time helping people in the area.

She was predeceased by her first husband, Roland Perkins in 1965 and by her second husband, Daniel E. Norton, who died in 1989. She was also predeceased by a son, Harold L. Perkins in 1995; two brothers, Joseph and Thurston Briley, and a sister, Florence Alley.

Survivors include one son, Donald Everett Perkins of Eliot; one daughter, Muriel R. Smith of South Berwick; one brother, Henry Briley of Cape Neddick; five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 2:30 p.m., Friday, April 25 in the First Parish Cemetery, York St., York. Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to the York Volunteer Ambulance Assoc., P.O. Box 238, York, ME, 03909. Arrangements by the Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home.

Verna S. Rundlett

YORK BEACH - Verna S. Rundlett, 76, wife of Henry B. Rundlett Jr. died Sunday, April 13, 2003 at York Hospital.

She was born on July 3, 1926 in Plymouth, Mass., was a graduate of Plymouth High School, and served her nursing internship at Anna Jacques Hospital in Newburyport, Mass.

Mrs. Rundlett was a licensed practical nurse at York Hospital for a number of years. She and her husband owned and operated Rundlett Cottage Rentals in York Beach for many years.

She moved to York Beach in 1974, after spending 27 years living throughout the United States and overseas while her husband was stationed with the U.S. Army. She had lived in Alaska, New York, Pennsylvania, and Italy, before moving to Maine.

She dedicated more than 25 years as a volunteer and promoter of York and the York Beach area and supported many children’s programs in York.

Verna was the founder of York Days in the late 1970s. She coordinated the building of the Sohier Park Welcome Center at the Nubble Lighthouse and served as a volunteer and manager at the Welcome Center. She began the "Lighting of the Nubble" during the holiday season and served as committee chairperson of the Grant House Project to transform the Grant House into a public meeting building. She was also the founder of the Summer Social Calendar, which she began in the 1980s. She served on the York Beach Ball Field committee and had been a York Historical Society volunteer.

Verna received Citizen of the Year 1994-95 from the York Chamber of Commerce; a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2001 from the town of York and the Humanitarian Award for Volunteer Services awarded by the American Legion Post 56 of York.

Verna leaves behind her husband Henry B. Rundlett Jr. of York Beach.

Her sons, Paul B. Rundlett , his wife Bonnie and their daughter Lindsey of Lancaster, Mass., David L. Rundlett of Tyngsboro, Mass., and his daughters Sage and Gabrielle, and John L. Rundlett and his wife Christine, and their children Stephanie and Matthew. One brother, Arthur Shaw Jr. of Middleboro, Mass., and one sister, Jean Crandall of Seabring, Fla.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Thursday, April 17 in the Union Congregational Church, Church Street, York Beach. No visiting hours.

The family desires that memorial donations be made to the recent town project to help children that Verna greatly supported, the Bog Road athletic fields, by making donations to the Verna Rundlett Memorial Fund with checks made out to York Fields Committee, PO Box 620, York, 03909.

Michael J. Dolan Sr.

Michael Joseph Dolan Sr., 79, of Lobster Cove Road, York, husband of Jean (McKay) Ford Dolan, died Thursday, April 17, 2003, at York Harbor Health Care at Sentry Hill, surrounded by his loving wife and children.

He was born May 23, 1923, in Brookline, Mass., son of Charles and Catherine (Mulhern) Dolan and attended local schools.

Mr. Dolan worked as a technical manager and product inspector for 17 years for the General Electric Company in Somersworth, N.H. He was the president of the General Electric Employees Association.

For 25 years he was the owner of Busy Bee Janitorial Services, Inc., serving the New England area.

Mr. Dolan moved from Somersworth to the York area in 1976.

He was a member of the Somersworth City Council, a member of the Elks, Knights of Columbus and the Ancient Order of Hibernians, all of Dover, N.H.

He was an avid golfer and was a member of the Cape Neddick Golf Club. Mr. Dolan enjoyed sailing and was a member of the York Harbor Boating Commission, and the Propeller Club and Navy League, both in Portsmouth, N.H.

Mr. Dolan was a member of the New England MGCC in York and a member of the Romeo Club in York.

He enjoyed singing and sang in the choirs at St. Christopher Church and in the First Parish Congregational Church in York.

He began skiing in the winter at the age of 65 and was active until two years ago.

He married his devoted wife, Jean F. (McKay) Ford Dolan, in 1984. They would have celebrated their 19th anniversary this year.

Mr. Dolan was predeceased by his first wife, R. Virginia (Doyle) Dolan, who died in 1973; a son, James Dolan, who died in 1965; a grandson, Sean Dolan, who died in 1985; and by three brothers.

Survivors include his wife, Jean, of York; two sons, Frederick and Linda Dolan of Strafford, N.H., and Michael J. Dolan Jr. of Dover, N.H.; two stepsons, Tim and Joellen Ford of Shorewood, Minn., and Tom and Lorrie Ford of Sidney, N.Y.; three daughters, Virginia and Steven Powers of South Portland, Beth and Jeff Holdridge of Easton, Pa., and Mary T. Dolan of Portsmouth, N.H.; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Tuesday in the First Parish Congregational Church, York. Donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, ME Chapter, 163 Lancaster St., Suite 160-B, Portland, ME 04101-2406.
