Mary Jane Hummell

Mary Jane Hummell was born March 3, 1953 in St. Louis, Mo., and passed away March 13, 2003, at York Hospital in York, from complications resulting from a severe case of septic pneumonia.

As it did throughout her life, her strong and loving heart held fast during her 30-day struggle for survival.

Mary was a bright star of enthusiasm and gentle kindness in the lives of everyone she touched. She was a joyfully devoted wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, and eldest sister with nine brothers and sisters. Mary found great joy in caring for anyone in need, including the residents at Sentry Hill Retirement Home where she worked as a CNA. Mary, in passing as in life, was deeply loved and she will be profoundly missed by her husband, children, friends and co-workers.

A memorial service was held April 17 in The First Parish Congregational Church, York. Arrangements by the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home.

Gladys E. Moulton

Gladys E. Moulton, 91, formerly of 133 Mountain Road, Cape Neddick, died Tuesday, April 15, 2003, at the Harbor Home.

She was born in Cape Neddick, the daughter of Edmond and Lizzy (Plaisted) Welch, and attended York schools.

Mrs. Moulton worked for many years as a chambermaid at the Goldenrod and in private homes and local hotels. She enjoyed knitting, traveling, crosswords and time with her family.

She was predeceased by her husband, Kenneth L. Moulton, who died in 1985. She was also predeceased by a brother, Everett Welch; three sisters, Mildred Currier, Beulah Smith and Isabel Norton; by a granddaughter, Sue Stevens, and a son-in-law, Lester C. Stevens.

Survivors include four sons, Carroll E. Moulton of Victoria, Texas, Leslie Moulton of Wells, Elmer A. Moulton Sr. and Kenneth E. Moulton, both of Cape Neddick; five daughters, Joan Kindred, Barbara Stevens and Jean Stevens, all of Wells, Gay Anderson of Vienna, and Patricia Moulton of Cape Neddick; 26 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, April 17 in the First Parish Cemetery, York Street, York. The Rev. Charles Jepson Jr. will officiate. No flowers. Memorial donations may be made to the Harbor Home Activity Fund, 6 Norwood Farms Road, York, ME 03909. Arrangements by the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home of York.

Katherine A. Norton

Katherine A. Norton of 29 Locust St., South Berwick, formerly of York, died April 7, 2003, in South Berwick.

A graveside service will be held at 2:30 p.m., Friday, April 25, in the First Parish Cemetery, York Street, York. Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to the York Volunteer Ambulance Association, P.O. Box 238, York, ME 03909. Arrangements by the Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, York.

Doris Renzello

Doris (Newbanks) Renzello of Malden, Mass., formerly of Charlestown, Mass., died April 15, 2003.

She was an employee of New England Coffee Co. of Malden.

Beloved wife of Frank J. Renzello. Devoted mother of Gale Marie McDaniel and her husband, Richard M. of Woburn, Mass., and Kim Marie Anderson and her husband, Harold W. of Medford, Mass. Loving grandmother of Jarid W. Anderson. Beloved daughter of Mary Newbanks of York and the late Dale H. Newbanks. Devoted sister of Dale Newbanks of Raymond, N.H., Dennis Newbanks of York, and Kathleen M. Evers of South Weymouth, Mass.

Funeral services were held Saturday at the Frank H. Carr Funeral Home, Charlestown, with Interment at Woodlawn Cemetery, Everett, Mass. Memorial donations may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, 20 Walnut St., Wellesley, MA 02181. Arrangements by the Frank H. Carr Funeral Home.

Meta Libby Rust

Meta Libby Rust, 80, of York, died peacefully Tuesday, April 15, 2003, at her home after an extended illness. She was predeceased by her husband, Myron D. Rust, in 1984.

Mrs. Rust was born in South Portland, Jan. 7, 1923, a daughter of Carl Clarence and Lillian Marie Nielsen Libby. She attended South Portland Schools and graduated from South Portland High School Class of 1940. She then went on to the former Maine General Hospital School of Nursing Class of 1944.

She was employed at Maine General Hospital and Mass. General Hospital in Boston for several years while her late husband attended law school. Mrs. Rust then returned to York where she worked as an R.N. at York Hospital, where she served as supervisor of the operating room, the recovery room, central supply and the emergency room. She retired from nursing in 1984.

She was a member and served on the board of deacon’s of the Union Congregational Church of York Beach; a member and past matron of Fadette Chapter, Order of Eastern Star of York and served as mother adviser of the Rainbow Girls Assemble No. 23. She was an active member of the York Republican Committee and a member of Gateway to Maine Republican Women’s Club of York County. She served on the board of trustees of the York Health Foundation and was a member of the York Hospital Nurses Club. She enjoyed music and playing her piano and organ. Following her retirement she also enjoyed golf and traveling.

Her husband, two brothers, Kenneth Nielsen Libby and Richard Mortensen Libby, and a nephew, Allan E. Libby, and his wife, Linda, predeceased her.

She is survived by her son, John Davis Rust, and daughter Libby Karen Rust, both of York; one brother, Frederick Clifford Libby, and his wife, Joan, of Morehead City, N.C.; sister-in-law Phyllis M. Libby of Dunedin, Fla., and sister-in-law Pauline T. Libby of Morgan Hill, Calif.

Several nieces and nephews also survive: Kenneth N. Libby and his wife, Karen, and their sons, Matt and Andrew; F. Clifford Libby and his wife, Barbara, and their sons, Carl and Erik; Hiram A. Libby and his wife, Caren, and his sons, Hiram II and Nicholas; Fred Libby; Allan E. Libby II; Marshall D. Rust and his wife, Almeda; Douglas Rust; Brian Rust; Lorna Libby Kocci and her husband, Douglas, and her children, Scott Barrett and Katherine Barrett; Diana Libby and her daughter, Maylee; Michelle Libby Neves; and two cousins, Evelyn N. Cox and Iver Clifford Nielsen.

Graveside services will be held at 12 p.m. on Saturday, April 26, at the First Parish cemetery in York, with the Reverend Patricia Smith officiating. Family flowers only. Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the Union Congregational Church, P.O. Box 969, York Beach, ME 03910, in Mrs. Rust’s memory.

Maurice Perkins Weare

Maurice Perkins Weare died April 9, 2003, in Napa, Calif., after a long illness.

He was born Aug. 31, 1906, in York, one of six children of Charles and Adella Perkins Weare. He was a long-time and eleventh-generation resident of the town of York.

He is survived by Charlotte A Weare, his loving wife of 55 years; daughters Kathryn M. Weare of York, and Barbara L Weare of Napa; two grandsons, Alexander and Joseph Pader of Napa; and brother, Charles Weare of York.

Mr. Weare graduated from York High School in 1926, and from Bowdon College in Brunswick, Class of ‘31. He served three years in World War II in the Army Coast Artillery. He was the third generation innkeeper and operator of the Cliff House in York from 1942 to 1979. He was a charter member of Maine Publicity Bureau (Maine Tourism Association) and a longtime member of Maine and New England Innkeepers Association.

Bruce R. Woodward

Bruce R. Woodward, of 216 Route 103, York, died Saturday, April 19, 2003, at Maine Medical Center after a valiant fight against cancer.

He was born in York, May 6, 1940, the son of Russell and Edith (Ferrin) Woodward. He attended York schools, graduating in 1958.

He worked in the family business, Austin Gas & Electric, after which he was employed by Eastern Propane of Rochester until his retirement in 2000.

Bruce was a devoted member of the York Volunteer Fire Department for 43 years, serving in many capacities during that time. He enjoyed deep-sea fishing, outdoor activities and woodworking.

He was predeceased by his daughter, Tracy (Woodward) Byrd who died in October 2001.

Bruce is survived by his wife of 40 years, Shirley (Balentine) Woodward of York; his parents, of York; two daughters, Penny and her husband, Jay Phillips of Columbus, Ohio, and Alison Thompson of Dover, N.H.; a granddaughter, Olivia Mae Phillips of Columbus; a son-in-law, Robert Byrd of Lowell, Mass.; a brother, Gerald and his wife, Luann Woodward of Wells; a niece, Eveyln Woodward of Brandon, Fla., and a cousin, Anna Woodward of York.

Graveside services will be held 1 p.m. Friday in the First Parish Cemetery, York. There are no visiting hours. Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to the York Volunteer Fire Dept., 1 Firehouse Drive, York, ME 03909. Arrangements by Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, York.

Richard Sinclair West Curra Jr.

Richard Sinclair West Curra Jr., 75, passed away peacefully on June 28, 2003, in Corpus Christi, Texas, after a long illness with Alzheimer’s disease.

Richard was born in Winthrop, Mass., on Sept. 2, 1927, and attended public schools in Saugus, Mass. He enlisted at the end of World War II and served in Fort Cambell, Ky. He was a graduate of Wentworth Institute of Boston, and worked for many years as chief engineer for Hussey Manufacturing Company in North Berwick. Here he met his wife of 52 years and raised four children.

Most notable of his accomplishments at Hussey Manufacturing was his invention of the closed deck telescopic bleacher, paving the way for the development of the large scale indoor stadium seating. After working for Hussey, he founded Brownsville Quality Sales and moved his family to Texas. He retired in Corpus Christi, and spent the last 11 years of his life there.

An avid sailor, he was a member of the Arundel Yacht Club in Kennebunkport and was a charter member of the Laguna Madre Yacht Club in Port Isabel, Texas. Other interests included music, building and inventing, traveling and reading. He was a member of Trinity by the Sea Episcopal Church in Port Aransas, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Evelyn Jordan and Richard Sinclair West Curra, Sr. He is survived by his wife, Doris Foster Curra; his brother, William Curra and wife, Susan Curra of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico; son Richard Jonathan Curra and his wife, Blair Dudley Curra; daughter Laurie Katharine Curra of Round Rock, Texas; son William Foster Curra; son Nicholas Alan Curra, and wife Catherine Curra, and eight grandchildren.

On Friday, Aug. 8 at 1 a.m., there will be a graveside service gathering of family and friends at the Foster family gravesite at The First Parish Cemetery, York Street, York. The committal service will be conducted by The Rev. Dr. Richard B. Knight, Pastor of First Parish Church. The family will receive friends at the home of Bill and Phoebe Foster following the service.

Mary Dwyer Hedges

Mary Dwyer Hedges, 61, of Westminster, Md., died on Sunday, July 20, 2003, after a seven-month battle with cancer.

She and her identical twin sister Wilmoth (Kathy) were born on Oct. 16, 1941, in Natick, Mass. She enjoyed summers in York Beach during her childhood and returned as often as possible.

The twins graduated from Framingham State College and taught in Massachusetts, Florida and Maryland, where Mary met her husband, Charles R. Hedges.

Her survivors include her husband, Charles Hedges, of Westminster; her son Garrett Hedges and his wife, Yanette, of Phoenix, Ariz.; her daughter, Kari Hedges, of Virginia; her granddaughter, Abbygael Hedges, of Phoenix; her brother John T. Dwyer and his wife Jane, of York Beach; her brother, Richard S. Dwyer and his wife, Jana, of York; her brother-in-law, Thomas Mead, of Ocean City, Md., and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews, including Suzanne Dwyer-Jones and her husband, Bill Jones, of York.

She was predeceased by her sister, Wilmoth Kathryn Mead, who died in 2001.

Services were held in Silver Spring, Md., on July 24. Memorial donations in her name may be made to Hospice of Howard County, 5537 Twin Knolls Road, Suite 433, Columbia, MD 21045.

Elaine A. Lombardi

Elaine Austin Lombardi, 77, beloved wife of Richard V. "Doc" Lombardi, of Longboat Key, Fla., and Pleasant Beach, died on Aug. 1, 2003, in York, after a short illness. She was a cherished wife and partner, a devoted mother, grandmother, cultural enthusiast, child advocate, and gardener.

Lanie, as she was known, was a native of Reading, Mass. She was a graduate of Stephens College in Missouri, and The Boston Conservatory, where she studied dance. She met her husband of 53 years while at The Conservatory. A longtime resident of Marblehead, Mass., she was a social activist, helped found the Community Center and started the Teen Drug Hotline.

After moving from Marblehead to Longboat Key in 1980, she was a photojournalist with the Longboat Observer and co-owner with her husband, of the Lombardi Group, an international marketing concern.

She was the daughter of the late Irving and Thelma Austin. She had two brothers, Richard, who was a member of the 101st Airborne and killed in World War II, and David, who lives in Holmes Beach, Fla. She was a loving mother and grandmother and is survived by her four children and their spouses, Richard and Pat Lombardi of Lincoln, Neb., and Stephen and Pam Lombardi, Lisa and Michael Raines, and David and Jeannie Lombardi, all of York; five grandchildren, Derek, Calli and Corina Lombardi and Wesley and Austin Raines, all of York.

A private service is planned in Pleasant Beach. At the request of the family, donations can be forwarded in her name to The Richard and Elaine Lombardi Scholarship Fund, The Boston Conservatory, Development Office, 8 The Fenway, Boston, MA 02215.

William Smith

William Smith, 83, of Dillon Lane, Swansea, Mass., died Thursday, July 10, 2003, at Portsmouth Hospital, Portsmouth, N.H.

He was born in New York City, N.Y., a son of the late Christopher and Catherine (McGarty) Smith.

He worked for the U.S. government in the American Foreign Legion Service Department before retiring in 1975. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving as a Boatswains Mate First Class. While in the Navy he received the Asiatic-Pacific Ribbon with one star, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon, the American Theater Ribbon, and the Victory Ribbon.

He has summered for the last 22 years in York Beach, and for 10 years wintered in Montevideo, Uruguay, South America.

He is survived by a brother, Thomas F. Smith Sr. of Swansea; two nephews, Thomas F. Smith, Jr. of Swansea and James Smith of Eatontown, N.J.; three nieces, Tracy DePietropaolo of Dawningtown, Pa., Marcia Miller of Basking Ridge, N.J., and Sally Dixner of Fairfield Glade, Tenn.; several grand-nieces and grand-nephews. He was the brother of the late Christopher Smith and also the late James Smith.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday, Aug. 9, at 10 a.m. in Christ Church Cemetery, Swansea. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. No flowers, please.

Muriel Irene (Kilgore) Ewing

BIDDEFORD - Mrs. Muriel I. (Kilgore) Ewing, 95, of York Beach, and formerly of Haverhill, Mass., Plaistow and Atkinson, N.H. and Daytona Beach, Fla., died Wednesday at the Southridge Rehabilitation and Living Center in Biddeford.

She was born in Haverhill, Mass., July 9, 1908, daughter of the late Frank and Mary (Riordan) Kilgore.

Prior to her retirement she had been a teacher for the city of Haverhill for more than 25 years.

Mrs. Ewing was a long time member of the Haverhill Golf and Country Club, past president of the Atkinson Garden Club, a member the Haverhill, Mass. and York Daughters of the American Revolution, the University of Lowell Alumni Association, the Haverhill Retired Teachers’ Association, and was a former member of the Haverhill, Daytona Beach, and York Hospital Auxiliaries, the Haverhill Women’s City Club, the Haverhill Girls Club, York Friends of the Public Library, and was a volunteer for the Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts in Plaistow, N.H.

She attended the Atkinson Congregational Church, in Atkinson, N.H., and the Union Congregational Church in York.

Mrs. Ewing loved golf, reading, travel, spending time with her family, and loved people and cherished her many friends.

She was married to her husband of 42 years, the late Leslie E. Ewing who died in 1979, and her survivors include a son and his wife Stephen and Cassandra Ewing of York, three grandchildren: Eric Ewing of Newport, Maine, Jane Morse of York, and David Ewing of Dover, N.H.; a great granddaughter Payton, Morse and a great grandson Camden Morse, both of York; a niece and a nephew.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to her memorial services Wednesday afternoon, Sept 3, at 1 p.m. at the United Congregational Church, York Beach, or Thursday morning, Sept. 4, at 10 a.m. at the H.L. Farmer & Sons Funeral Home, 106 Summer St., Haverhill, Mass.

Burial will be in the family lot at the Byfield Cemetery, Byfield, Mass.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice. Condolences to her family may be made at farmerfuneralhomes.com.
