Pamela D. Gillibrand

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Pamela Denise (Trefethen) Gillibrand, 50, of 320 Mountain Road, Cape Neddick, on Aug. 5, 2003. She died peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family.

Pam was born in Portsmouth, N.H., June 26, 1953, the daughter of Shirley Hersey Trefethen Webber and James F. Trefethen. She was a graduate of Traip Academy in 1971.

Beginning in 1971, Pam started her career at Liberty Mutual of Portsmouth, N.H., where she worked until her death as a principal technical analyst. She was a loyal and dedicated employee for 32 years. Her many friends and co-workers of Liberty did much for Pam and her family in her time of illness, which was appreciated more than words can say.

In Pam’s 50 years she touched the hearts of many. She was always the optimist and never let anyone or anything get her down. Although she lost her battle with cancer, she didn’t give up without a fight. Pam’s carefree and generous heart won her lifelong friendships that lasted throughout her entire life. These friends stood by her through illness, giving love and support to Pam and her family.

She had many hobbies, never being idle. She always kept busy cooking, canning, working in her garden, crocheting many beautiful gifts for her family and friends, and just enjoying her many animals. Pam loved sports, especially the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots. One of her greatest enjoyments was watching football with her husband, Tommy, and her mother, Mumsie.

Another favorite activity which was a daily ritual for Pam and Tommy was playing horseshoes in their back yard. Every day after work they’d grab a cooler and head out to the pit and laugh and tease each other as they played shoes until the dark of night.

Every fall Pam dedicated herself to helping her friend Tut, of King Tut’s Cider Mill, working the local fairs. It was something she looked forward to every fall season. Fond family memories of the time she spent at her father’s camp on Mousam Lake, the trips to Florida with her husband and children and the many parties they had in their home to entertain their numerous friends were especially dear to her.

Always willing to help others, Pam was a gentle caring soul. Always there for her friends and family or anyone in need. Anyone that Pam met became her friend, and these friendships carried her throughout her 50 years of life. She was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose of Portsmouth.

Of all the great things Pam did, her greatest accomplishment was her children, Ian and Brianna. Her love and devotion to them was immense. They were her pride and joy.

Pam married George Thomas Gillibrand on May 4, 1974. They lived most of their married life in Cape Neddick. Besides her beloved husband, Tommy, Pam leaves a son, Ian Thomas Gillibrand, 19, and a daughter, Brianna Leigh Gillibrand, 10, of Cape Neddick; a stepdaughter, Maria Staples, and stepgranddaughters, Shannon and Summer, of Saco; her parents, Shirley Webber and James and Pat Trefethen, all of Eliot; a mother-in-law, Florence "Terry" Gillibrand of Kittery; a brother, Willard Trefethen and nephews Daniel, Christian and Aaron, and niece Kaylee of Litchfield; a sister, Debra Goodwin and nieces, Megan and Katie, of Eliot; a sister and brother-in-law, Jamie and Kevin Charles, and nieces, Amanda and Rebecca, and nephew, Kevin, all of Tracy, Calif.; a sister and brother-in-law, Linda and Chip Drost, and nephew Cory, of Kittery; a brother, David Kenney of Eliot; a brother and sister-in-law, Glen and Carrie Kenney, and nephew, Matt, of Idaho; brothers and sisters-in-law, Gary and Barbara Gillibrand and niece, Jennifer, and grand-niece and grand-nephew, Isabelle and Alex, of York; Robert Hackett of Eliot; Theodore and Cindy Hackett of Dover, N.H.; Leonard and Bonnie Hackett of South Berwick; Larry and Patricia Bower of Kittery; and godson, Michael Andrew Clapp of North Berwick.

Pam also leaves behind numerous friends including those from Liberty Mutual, Ruby’s and The Lobster Barn.

Her courage was unmeasurable and her spirit indomitable.
