Madeline E. Grant

Madeline E. Grant, 86, of 143 Rogers Road, Meeting House Village, Kittery, formerly a longtime resident of York, died Sunday, Sept. 7, 2003, at Portsmouth (N.H.) Regional Hospital.

Born and raised on the family farm in Patten, she was a daughter of Bradbury and Lena (Grant) Beattie.

In 1936, she met and married her loving husband of more than 53 years, Edward Grant, of York. After their marriage they made their home in York and raised their family.

She and her husband were the care-takers of the Elizabeth Perkins Estate in York, as well as a number of other historical sites, enjoyed by many over the years. They cared for the old school, the tavern and the Reed House. She set up displays and ensured everything was in working order for those who visited.

Mrs. Grant was also a private cook for a number of families in York over the years. She was a member and past president of the York County Extension Services, and sold Avon for a number of years as well.

She and her family attended the First Parish Church in York while her family was growing up. She was a member of the Bethel Assembly of God Church in Portsmouth, N.H., and most recently attended the Christian Worship Center in Barrington, N.H.

After her husband died in 1990, she spent one year in Florida with her sister before moving to Meeting House Village in Kittery, where she enjoyed the friendship and company of the many friends she made there.

A wonderful mom and grandmother, she thoroughly enjoyed the time she spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She will be missed by those who knew and loved her, including her daughters; Elaine and her husband, Raymond Gaudette, of Phillips, and Constance and her husband, Raymond Hysler, of Eliot; four grandchildren, Glenn Gaudette, Erich Hysler, Tina Thibeau and Mark Hysler; great-grandchildren; Joel Thibeau Jr., Benjamin Gaudette, Jonathan Thibeau, Ashley Thibeau, Andrea Thibeau, Michael Quintel and Riley Hysler, and sisters Louella Wilcox of Florida and Clara Mayo of Sherman Mills.

Friends may visit with Mrs. Grant’s family on Wednesday, Sept. 10, from 1 to 2 p.m., at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery, where a funeral will be held at 2 p.m.

Donations may be made in her memory to the Gideons International, P.O. Box 140800, Nashville, TN 37214-140800. Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Ronald Benjamin Lavallee

Ronald Benjamin Lavallee, of Cape Neddick, died Saturday, Sept. 6, 2003, at Veterans Hospital, Manchester, N.H., following an eight-month struggle with cancer.

Ron was born Dec. 27, 1942, in Providence, R.I., the son of George and Loretta Lavallee. He attended LaSalle Academy in Providence and was a 1965 graduate of Providence College.

Ron served in the Army from 1965 to 1967 and was stationed in Texas. He then moved to North Kingston, R.I., where he taught history and English at the local junior high school.

Ron’s true love was music. He was an accomplished guitarist, songwriter, and performer from 1968 to 1985. He played with several different groups in the greater New England area.

During the 1980s, Ron worked in the food and beverage industry in Portsmouth, N.H., and in York-Cape Neddick.

Most recently, he was self- employed as the owner of River Road Painters, Cape Neddick.

Ron’s favorite place to be was on his boat fishing for stripers, or watching the Red Sox and forever hoping they would finally win.

He is survived by his lifelong partner of 25 years, Suzanne Roux of Cape Neddick; his mother and father, Loretta and George Lavallee of Warwick, R.I., and his sister, Dianne Ferrara of Bristol, R.I.

Visiting hours are Wednesday from 2 to 3:30 p.m. with a Time of Remembrance and sharing of memories at 3:30 p.m. at the Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York. Interment will be 1 p.m. Friday in the Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Exeter, R.I. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ron’s memory to the American Cancer Society, N.E. Division, Pancreatic Cancer Research, 1 Main St., Suite 300, Topsham, ME 04086.

Dorothy Shaw Lamb

HUNTINGTON, N.Y. – Dorothy Shaw Lamb, 95, of 9 Hilaire Farm Road died Sunday, Sept. 7, 2003, at Hilaire Farm Nursing Home.

She was the daughter of Frederick and Jessica (Shaw) Lamb and was a graduate of Taunton High School. Miss Lamb studied at Wheelock College and received both her bachelor of science and master’s degree in education from Boston University. She also had completed sabbatical studies of Greek classics at Trinity College in Dublin.

Miss Lamb had been a fourth-grade teacher at the Runkle and Baker schools in Boston for 40 years. She was known for teaching her students in the liberal arts and exposing them to classic novels, poetry, art and music. She continued tutoring children after her retirement.

She was a writer and had been published in the Saturday Preview, The Boston Transcript, The New York Herald Tribune and The Christian Science Monitor.

Miss Lamb had lived on Gerry Road in Chestnut Hill, Newton, Mass., for many years.

She enjoyed oil painting, bird watching and completing the New York Times crossword puzzles.

She enjoyed traveling to Europe, especially to her ancestral homeland of Scotland.

Survivors include three nephews: Frank Lamb and his wife, Karen of Louisville, Colo., Vincent Lamb and his wife Helga of South Merritt Island, Fla. and William "Andy" Lamb of Huntsville, Ala. Three great-nieces and great-nephews, Kelly Lamb Pacic, Kyle Lamb and Elizabeth Frederick.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 18 in the First Parish Cemetery, York. Arrangements by the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, York.

Virginia Fay Martin

YORK - Virginia Fay Martin, 85, formerly of Sheru Lane and Fall Mill Road, died Monday, Sept. 8, 2003, at the Kennebunk Nursing Home in Kennebunk.

She was born in York, Feb. 27, 1918, the daughter of Charles L. and Evelyn M. (Whitten) Littlefield. She graduated from York High School with the Class of 1935.

On Sept. 15, 1940, she married Howard B. Martin.

Mrs. Martin worked as a telephone operator for New England Telephone in York until the town went self-dial. She had also worked as a CNA at York Hospital.

She was a communicant of St. George’s Episcopal Church.

Mrs. Martin raised and showed Shetland ponies in harness. She was a quiet person, an avid reader and gardener. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, quilting and cooking.

Mrs. Martin was predeceased by her husband, Howard, who died in March 1991 and by her sister, Charlotte Valentine.

Survivors include her daughter, Judith F. Martin of York; three grandchildren, Margot F. (Simonds) Munn of Las Palmas, Grand Canary Island, Spain, Geoffrey G. Simonds of Arlington, Mass., and Megan E. (Simonds) Mello of Cape Neddick. Great-grandchildren are Kiegan, Jeremy and Dylan Munn; Julia and Aydin Mello; and Emma Simonds.

Private graveside services will be held. Memorial donations may be made to the York Public Library, 15 Long Sands Road, York, ME 03909. Arrangements by Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, York.

Nancy Louise Newick Platner

YORK - Nancy Louise Newick Platner, 60, died peacefully surrounded by family and friends on Wednesday, July 16, 2003 at her childhood home, Rivermouth, on Bragdon’s Island in York Harbor after a six-year battle with cancer. At the time of her death she was a resident of Norwich, Vt. and before that had been a longtime resident of Hingham, Mass.

She was born on May 27, 1943, in York, the third daughter of G. Mason and Lillian Hillyard (Neilson) Newick and graduated from York High School in 1961. She attended, among others, the University of Colorado, Leslie and Curry colleges and Vesper George, as well as many art seminars and spiritual retreats. She taught for many years as assistant director at the South Shore Conservatory of Music in Hingham, Mass. Nancy was an active artist, loved to travel the world and was unusually intellectually curious throughout her life.

She was predeceased by her father, G. Mason Newick, and is survived by her husband, Edward Weeks Platner of Quincy, Mass.; her sons, Benjamin Weeks Platner of Portland and Joshua Huntress Platner of Camden; her mother Lillian N. Newick of York; her brother Mason and wife Catherine S. Newick of Canterbury, N.H.; nieces, nephews, an aunt and in-laws. She will be greatly missed by her family and many friends.

A Quaker style memorial service will be held on Sept. 20 at Bragdon’s Island in York. You are invited to share your stories and memories, join voices together in song and honor a truly beautiful person. Please arrive between 11 a.m. and 12 p.m. The celebration will begin at 12:30 p.m.

Donations in Nancy’s memory may be made to the charity of your choice.

Antoinette "Toni" (Cote) DeLise

YORK HARBOR - Antoinette M. "Toni" (Cote) DeLise, of 50 Boban St., died Tuesday, Oct. 14, at York Hospital after a long illness.

She was born in Presque Isle, the daughter of Antoine and Anne (Levesque) Cote, and graduated with honors from Presque Isle High School in 1950.

She had formerly lived in Concord, Mass., and Wallingford, Conn., before moving to York five years ago.

She was a devoted mother and grandmother. She was a communicant of St. Christopher-by-the-Sea Church in York. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, arts and crafts and cooking. She loved to travel with her husband and traveled throughout Europe, Canada and Bermuda, and visited Disney World as well as Chicago to visit their son.

She was predeceased by her parents and several brothers and sisters.

Survivors include her husband, Anthony A. DeLise, of York Harbor; one daughter, Elizabeth D. Fickett, and her husband, David C. of Winter Harbor; two sons, David Anthony DeLise and his wife, Darcy, of York and Christopher J. DeLise and his fiancée, Michelle Bercutt, of Chicago; four grandchildren, Caroline, Samuel and Israel Fickett and Wyatt David DeLise; one brother, Percy Cote of Presque Isle; and two sisters, Cecilia Smart of Presque Isle and Jeanette Brown of Wallingford, Conn.

A Mass of Christian burial was held at 11 a.m. on Friday in St. Christopher Church, York Street, York.

There will be no visiting hours. Flowers may be sent or memorial donations may be made to Hospice of York, 1A Hospital Drive, York, ME 03909. Arrangements by the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York.

Harold "Zazzi" Sussman

NEWTON, Mass. - Harold "Zazzi" Sussman of Newton, Mass., formerly of York, and Pembroke Pines, Fla. entered into rest Oct. 17, 2003.

He was the beloved husband of the late Jeanette (Lipinsky); devoted father of Lucky Hill of Wayland, Michael Sussman of Beverly, Mass. Loving brother of Ethel Wilson of Northampton and the late Arnold Sussman of Nashua, N.H. Cherished grandfather of Peter and Nancy Hill, Jenni and Rob Rubin and Kim Sussman. Proud great-grandfather of Alex, Zack, Harry, Caroline, Jake and Lindsay. He was a decorated veteran of World War II, receiving the Silver Star, two Bronze Stars and the Purple Heart. Services were held Sunday, Oct. 19 at 1 p.m. at Stanetsky Memorial Chapel, 475 Washington St., Canton, Mass. Memorial observances were held following the service at the home of Jenni and Rob Rubin and Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the home of Peter and Nancy Hill. Expressions of sympathy in his memory may be made to the Venous Thromboembolism Research Group, c/o Samuel Z. Goldhaber, M.D., Brigham & Women’s Hospital, Cardiology Tower 3B, 75 Francis St., Boston, Mass. 02115.

Elizabeth T. "Betty" Fangmeyer

Elizabeth T. "Betty" Fangmeyer, 82, of Greenville Falls, N.H., died at the Monadncok Community Hospital on Thursday, July 10, 2003, after a lengthy illness.

Born in Wilton, N.H., on April 28, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Anna (Batchelder) and Pasquale Tallarico. She was a 1940 graduate of the Forrest Park High School in Baltimore, Md. She spent many summers in Wilton on the family farm. She lived in Baltimore, Belfast, Wilton, Peterborough, N.H., and York. She was very active in the York Senior Center for many years. She was also an avid supporter of fund-raising projects for the March of Dimes, American Red Cross and the American Cancer Society. She was employed by the Monadnock Community Hospital in Peterborough as a medical records clerk, retiring in 1987.

Members of her family include two sons, Donald G. Fangmeyer and former daughter-in-law Margaret Marty Fangmeyer, of Exeter, N.H., and Raymond T. and Maureen Fangmeyer of Temple, N.H.; one daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth F. and Walter Haezlton of Plainfield, N.H.; three brothers, Leslie Tallarico of Wilton, Robert Tallarico of Miami, Fla., and Alan Tallarico of Woodstock, Vt.; a sister, Virginia Rexford of Bedford, N.H.; four grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Donald T. Fangmeyer in 1986, by one brother, Albi Tallarcio, and one sister, Isabel Weston.

A graveside service was held Monday, July 14 at the Grove cemetery in Belfast. Memorial donations may be made in her name to the Monadnock Community Hospital, 452 Old Street Road, Peterborough, NH 03458. The Nelson Funeral Home, Wilton, is in charge of arrangements.

Betty Lee (Trafton) Hussey

Betty Lee (Trafton) Hussey of 250 Knights Pond Road, South Berwick, died peacefully Monday, July 14, 2003, at home surrounded by her family.

Born in York, April 25, 1923, she was the daughter of Burton and Christina (Hooper) Trafton.

She graduated from Berwick Academy in 1940 and worked at the Central School cafeteria for 25 years.

She was a member of First Baptist Church and also attended St. John’s United Methodist Church.

The widow of Edgar Hussey, Sr., who died in 1987, she is survived by two sons, Dennis Hussey and his wife, Suzanne of Easton, and Edgar Hussey, Jr., and his wife, Sally of South Berwick; three daughters, Judith Ann Moses of Fairbanks, Alaska, Jane Lee Hall and her husband, Ron of Tenants Harbor, and Ann Lee Hussey and her husband, Michael Nazemetz of South Berwick; nine grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren, and a brother, Marlin Trafton of Berwick.

She was predeceased by a brother, Burton Trafton Jr., and a sister, Ruby Perkins.

At her request, there will be no visiting hours. A graveside service will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 16 at Woodlawn Cemetery, with the Rev. Earle Custer, retired minister, officiating. A gathering will be held at her home immediately following the service.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to First Baptist Church, 130 Main St., South Berwick, ME 03908, to St. John’s United Methodist Church, 28 Cataract Ave., Dover, NH 03820, or to the charity of one’s choice.

Arrangements are under the direction of McIntire-McCooey Funeral Home, South Berwick.
