James A. Forest

NASHUA, N.H. - James A. Forest, 53 of Nashua, N.H., and Drakes Island, Maine, died Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2003, at his home, surrounded by his family after a lengthy battle with cancer.

Born in Nashua on April 26, 1950, he was the son of Lionel A. and Zoe M. (Tamposi) Forest. He attended Bishop Guertin High School in Nashua, N.H., and received a Bachelor of Science degree from the Boston College School of Management in 1972. His college education included a year at Loyola University in Rome, Italy, where he met his wife, Marilyn.

In 1987, he received a Master of Science in Real Estate Development from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. MIT was the first university in the country to establish an integrated graduate program of study, recognizing the vital role of developers in their communities.

He began his career under the guidance of his uncle, Samuel A. Tamposi, who shared with him his love for the "built environment" and his enthusiasm for the "art of the deal." He was involved in the acquisition and development of industrial, commercial and residential properties in Nashua and the surrounding area. He also developed properties with an eye toward historic value and was the recipient of a national award for the restoration of his office complex at 91 Amherst St.

As a result of his interest in land conservation and saving open spaces, in 1989 he was appointed by Gov.Judd Gregg to the state Land Conservation Investment Program, which allocated $50 million for acquisition of land and conservation easements. During his tenure on the LCIP, he served as chairman of a subcommittee to help preserve Lake Umbagog, which straddles the New Hampshire and Maine border.

Always active in the community, he sat on the boards of United Way of Greater Nashua, Nashua Children’s Association, Young Men’s Christian Association, Nashua Affordable Housing Task Force, First N.H. Mortgage Corporation, First Federal Savings and Loan and New Hampshire Savings Bank South. He was also active in Nashua Rotary West and had recently been honored as a Paul Harris Fellow by the Rotary Club of Nashua. In addition, he had served as a trustee for Mount St. Mary’s High School, Bishop Guertin High School and Applewild School in Fitchburg, Mass.

He was also a trustee for Laudholm Trust in Wells, which supports the Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve, a 1,600 acre land preserve in southern Maine. A neighbor of the reserve at his home on Drakes Island Beach, he quickly became involved in its preservation efforts. Serving on the Reserve Advisory Committee, his knowledge of real estate development was helpful during the negotiations to buy the Laudholm Farm. In 1988, after the purchase was completed, he joined the board of trustees.

He acknowledged that no development can be totally sensitive to the fragile environment of a barrier beach, but he challenged anyone who owns such land to develop it in the most sensitive way possible.

The home he built on the Maine shore in 1982 was dear to his heart, and it sustained and comforted him with its beauty until the end of his life. Devoted to his family and many friends, he was supportive of his children’s passion for the arts and enjoyed gardening at his home in Maine, where he frequently entertained and never failed to please with his gourmet cooking.

He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Higgins Forest, and three children, Kathryn E. Forest and John P. Forest of New York City, and David M. Forest of Los Angeles; his parents, Lionel and Zoe Forest of Nashua; father-in-law, Dr. Raymond F. Higgins of Greenland, Mass.; a sister and her husband, Carol Forest and Bernard Stoltie of Shelton, Conn.; a sister-in-law, Carol H. Aultman and her husband Mark of Westerville, Ohio; a sister-in-law, Gail H. Fogarty and her husband Edward of Providence, R.I.; and a brother-in-law, James E. Higgins and his wife Laura of Friendswood, Texas; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins, nieces and nephews.

The Farwell Funeral Service of Nashua is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Laudholm Trust, P.O. Box 1007, Wells, ME 04090. Funeral services were held in Nashua on Saturday, Nov.15, 2003.
