Richard A. Apgar

OGUNQUIT - Richard A. "Pete" "Cy" Apgar, 74, of Captain Thomas Road, died unexpectedly Monday, Nov. 3, 2003, at his residence.

He was born in Oldwick, N.J., on July 4, 1929, the youngest son of Ross and Hazel (Wade) Apgar.

He was a 1948 graduate of York High School.

He served in the U.S. Navy and Air Force during the Korean War.

He had been a telephone splicer, lineman and installer for New England Telephone at the Sanford and Kennebunk offices for 30 years.

He lobstered on his boat, Firecracker Pete, for many years.

He held a captain’s license and chartered ocean and tuna fishing.

He was also an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed clamming and traveling in his travel trailer.

He was predeceased by a brother, Ross Apgar, who died in 1986.

Survivors include two daughters, Phoebe Apgar-Pressey and her husband, Lynn, of York, and Karen Apgar Connolly and her husband, Stephen, of York; four grandchildren, Emma and Kiera Pressey and Timothy and Malory Connolly; a sister, Phoebe A. Foster, and a brother, Paul H. Apgar, both of York.

A memorial service was held Sunday, Nov. 9, at the York Fisherman’s Memorial in York Harbor.

Interment will be at sea.

Memorial donations may be made to the York Fishermen’s Memorial Fund, c/o York Town Hall, 186 York St., York, ME 03909.

Kathleen "Kitty" Bassett

YORK HARBOR - Kathleen "Kitty" Bassett, 82, passed away on Nov. 3, 2003, at Harbor Home in York Harbor.

Kitty was the daughter of Elizabeth and Patrick Ryan of Littleton, N.H.

She and her husband, Tom Bassett, raised their family in Nashua, N.H., where Kitty had a gratifying job in the dietary department at Memorial Hospital.

Upon retirement, Kitty and Tom became "mall-walkers," joining the early-morning crowd at Pheasant Lane Mall.

When they moved to Gilmanton, N.H., they walked daily at the Steeplegate Mall in Concord, N.H.

She moved to York in early 1999, following the death of her beloved, Tom, and the progression of her Alzheimer’s disease.

She was lovingly cared for by her friends, the terrific staff at Harbor Home, and her children: Kathleen Bassett of York, Tom Bassett Jr. of North Berwick, and Dianne Lavoie of Candia, N.H.

She was predeceased by two brothers, James and Patrick, and her son-in-law, Bill Lavoie.

In addition to her children she is survived by a grandson, Eric Bassett of Norfolk, Va.; four sisters; Joan, Elizabeth, Roberta and Bernadette.

She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours were held on Friday, Nov. 7, at the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home.

A funeral service followed the visitation.

Interment will be at a later date in Gilmanton, N.H.

Donations may be made in Kitty’s name to the Alzheimer’s Association, Maine Chapter, 163 Lancaster St., Suite 160, Portland, ME 04101-2406.

D. Edward Besson

YORK - Dewey Edward "Ed" Besson, 54, of 322 Chases Pond Road, died Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2003, at his residence after a long illness.

He was born on Aug. 2, 1949, in Somerville, Mass., the son of Sam D. and Rita E. (Salisbury) Besson and was a graduate of Somerville Trade School.

He had been a self-employed electrician in the Brockton, Mass., area for many years, moving to York in 1991.

He was a member of the Local 490 Union of Dover, N.H.

He was a loving father and step-father and was known as a "true character."

He was a member of the Jehovah’s Witnesses Kingdom Hall in Kittery.

He was predeceased by a son, Michael Besson, who died in May, 2003.

Survivors include his wife, Antoinette Ford Besson of York; two daughters, Alexandra O. Ford Besson of York, and Melanie A. Besson of Somerville; one step-daughter, Priscilla A. Ford of York; one sister, Mrs. William (Evelyn) Domings of Methuen, Mass.; and two grandsons, Alex and Sean.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 15, in the Jehovah’s Witnesses Kingdom Hall, 14 Dennett Road, Kittery.

Donald C. Emery

DRAKES ISLAND - Donald C. Emery, 70 of Melrose, Mass., and Drakes Island, died unexpectedly Nov. 6, 2003, at his residence in Drakes Island.

He was raised in Melrose, Mass., and was a lifelong resident.

He graduated from Melrose High School in 1951 and Northeastern University.

He was a pilot in the Air Force during the Korean conflict.

He was an electrical engineer for many years at Avco in Wilmington, Mass.

He served on the board of directors for the credit union at Avco.

Donald was a volunteer and team leader for the Southern Maine Beach Profile Monitoring Program and also for the Microbial source tracking project in York County.

He was awarded the 2003 volunteer extraordinaire award with the Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve.

He was a member of the Wells/Ogunquit Historical Society, the Buxton/Hollis Historical Society, Drakes Island Improvement Association, Emery’s Bridge Community Association, South Berwick, the Laudholm Trust, and S.O.S. - Maine and the New England Historical and Genealogical Society, Boston, Mass.

He was a piping plover monitor on Drakes Island, and was actively involved with the endangered piping plover.

He was the husband of the late Sara J. "Sally" (Likins) Emery; father of Linda J. Jancsy and her husband, Richard, of Nashua, N.H. and Douglas R. Emery of Melrose, Mass; brother of Dorothy L. Sharp and her husband, Floyd, of Sierra Vista, Ariz., Marilyn R. Newall of Dallas, Texas, and Robert E. Emery and his wife, Judy, of Laconia, N.H.; brother-in-law to Lucinda Eastman and her husband, Robert, of Hollis, N.H. and John Likins and his wife, Edie Keller-Likins, of Waterville; grandfather of Richard M. Jancsy and his wife, Christy, of Augusta, Ga., and Carolyn M. Jancsy of Manchester, N.H.; and great-grandfather of Catherine E. Jancsy of Augusta, Ga.

He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at Trinity Church 131 West Emerson St., Melrose, Mass., Thursday, Nov. 13, at 10 a.m.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.

Interment in Wyoming Cemetery, Melrose, Mass.

Gifts in his memory may be made to the Laudholm Trust, P.O. Box 1007, Wells, ME. 04090-1007.

Richard Gilman French

YORK - Richard Gilman French, 86, of York, and formerly of Watertown, Mass., died Saturday, Nov. 8, 2003, at Bear Hill Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Stoneham, Mass.

Born in Livermore Falls on Aug. 16, 1917, he was the son of Andrew W. and Lona (Gilman) French.

He graduated from Livermore Falls High School, Class of 1935, and continued his education at the Bliss Business College in Lewiston, Class of 1937.

He served his country during World War II in the U.S. Army Air Force, having attained the rank of sergeant.

He married Jean Gordon in 1946, and they raised their family in Watertown Mass.

He worked as an account manager for several paper companies in the Massachusetts area.

Upon his retirement, Richard and his wife moved to York, where they were members of the York Golf and Tennis Club and St. George’s Episcopal Church in York Harbor.

He is survived by his wife, Jean (Gordon) French of Melrose, Mass., and York; daughter Marjorie Koles and her husband, Anthony, of Melrose, Mass., and son John French and his wife, Linda, of Landis, N.C.; four grandchildren, Scott Koles, Suzanne (Koles) Reid, Michelle (French) Harton and Michael French.

The family wishes to express its thanks to the staff at York Hospital for the compassionate and excellent care given Richard.

There will be no calling hours.

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, in St. George’s Episcopal Church, York Street, York Harbor, with Interment immediately following.

Donations may be made in Richard’s memory to York Hospital, 15 Hospital Drive, York, ME 03909.

Margaret E. Ott

YORK - Margaret E. Ott died Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2003 at the home of her son, David Ott, in York.

She was born in Tunnelton, W.Va., on May 8, 1910, daughter of Oliver and Cora Eliason.

She lived most of her life in western Pennsylvania.

She attended college at West Virginia Wesleyan College and Slippery Rock State Teachers College.

For 25 years she was a teacher in the North Allegheny school system outside Pittsburgh, earning a Master of Education from the University of Pittsburgh at 52.

Margaret married her college sweetheart, Henry Ott, in 1935.

They resided in Titusville, Pa., where she became very involved in community activities while her husband taught school and coached the high school football team.

During World War II, while he was serving in the U.S. Navy, she took up the cause and worked as a Prudential debit manager until the boys came home.

In 1946, she and her husband moved to Pittsburgh.

After her teaching career, she and her husband retired to Palm Harbor, Fla.

They were frequent summer and holiday visitors to York, where they enjoyed family and Maine friends.

During their retirement, Margaret and her husband enjoyed traveling, playing golf and time spent with their son and grandchildren.

They shared a happy and loving 63 years of marriage until her husband’s death in 1998.

She was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Palm Harbor.

She enjoyed Bible studies and was often a greeter for Sunday services.

In her quiet times, she was an avid reader, never without an open book or two scattered about the house or in her purse.

She remained an active golf enthusiast until the day of her heart attack in July of 2002.

A stroke shortly thereafter did not diminish her enthusiasm for life.

She treasured her family and lifelong friends and was an inspiration to all who knew her.

Margaret was predeceased by her husband, Henry (Hank) Ott, her brother, Neil and sister, Rose, and her daughter-in-law, Jane Dahl Ott.

She is survived by her son, David Ott; granddaughter, Whitney Ott-Aromando and her husband Brian Aromando, of Ogunquit; grandson, David B. Ott and his wife, Janice of Cape Neddick; great-grandchildren Daisy Aromando, Mallory Aromando, Hayden Ott and Ethan Ott.

A memorial service will be held at the First Parish Congregational Church in York on Thursday, Nov. 13, at 11 a.m.

Donations may be made in her memory to the York Public Library or the York Volunteer Ambulance Association.

Doris E. Twombly

YORK - Doris Elizabeth Edgerley Twombly, 90, of York, died Nov. 2, 2003, peacefully at the York Harbor Home surrounded by her loving family and assisted by the skilled care of the YHH staff.

She was born in Norwood, R.I., on Aug. 24, 1913. She was raised in Brooklyn, N.Y., the daughter of Frank Roger Edgerley and Elizabeth Irene Doeg Edgerley.

She was predeceased by her husband, Clayton Bennett Twombly, who died in 1989.

She was a loving devoted mother and wife.

Through a strong faith she raised her six children, Bennett C. Twombly and his wife, JoAnn, of Franklin, Pa.; Richard P. Twombly and his wife, Patricia, of York Beach; Dennise I. Holzinger and her husband, James, of York; Natalie A. Nicewicz and her husband, Anthony, of Upper Marlboro, Md.; the Rev. Frank R. Twombly and his wife, Karen, of Winslow; and Lizbeth G. Randall and her husband, Robert, of Kittery Point; two foster sons, Ronald and Russell McFarland of York; and a niece, Ruth Susan Twombly of York.

She truly enjoyed her 14 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Frank Roger Edgerley Jr. and Robert Doeg Edgerley, and a granddaughter, Elizabeth I. Twombly.

A graveside committal service will be held at 1 p.m., today, Nov. 12, at the First Parish Cemetery, York Street.

Memorial Donations may be made to the Harbor Home Activity Fund, 6 Norwood Farms Road, York ME 03909, or to one’s favorite charity.

Arrangements are by the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home.

Susan Lamb Young

SPRINGFIELD, Vt. - The family of Susan Lamb Young announces her passing in Springfield, Vt., on Nov. 1, 2003.

She was born on Aug. 23, 1908, in Worcester, Mass. She is the daughter of Herbert A. Lamb and Mary McCarthy Lamb.

She graduated from South High School, Pratt Institute and Columbia University.

She was a registered dietitian. Her first job was at Hahneman Hospital in Philadelphia.

She worked for many years at Brookhaven National Laboratory, Long Island, N.Y., and concluded her professional career as director of school lunch programs in the states of Connecticut, New York and Massachusetts.

She was pre-deceased by her husband, Charles D. Young, in 1989.

For the last several years, she divided her time between Fort Myers Beach, Fla., and York.

She leaves a nephew, George W. Lamb, of Springfield, Vt. and a niece, Susan T. Lamb, of Wayne,Pa.

A graveside service will be held on Nov. 22, at 1 p.m., at the Hope cemetery in Worcester, Mass.

Pastor Lisa Brugett-Cass, of Wesley United Methodist Church will officiate.
