Ruth A. Clark

DAMARISCOTTA - Ruth A. Clark, 86, died Nov. 27, 2003, at Cove’s Edge Nursing Home in Damariscotta. The oldest of nine children born to Sanford S. and Ida (Delano) Bartlett, she was born Dec. 5, 1916, in Newcastle.

A good student, Ruth attended local schools, graduating from Lincoln Academy in 1934. She liked being in town so much that, during school, she got a job as a serving girl for a prominent local family in exchange for room and board. She continued her education at Farmington Teachers College following high school.

Before her marriage to Maillard S. Clark Sr., in 1945, she worked as a waitress at the Riverview Restaurant. She started married life by residing with two stepdaughters and her father-in-law.

Her joys in life were God, family and friends. She always said that if her husband and chickens (children) were OK, she was OK. Loving music all her life, she taught her children many childhood songs, which any visitor on Saturday mornings would hear throughout the home.

Living at Round Top in Damariscotta became an important part of her life, where she and her oldest stepdaughter would plan neighborhood parties. She was also a warm hostess for her husband’s interests. He served as first selectman in Damariscotta and was a Lincoln County commissioner for many years.

She was a member of the Whitefield Primitive Baptist Church, the Damariscotta Baptist Church, the Damariscotta Baptist Church Women’s Club and the Lincoln County Republican Club.

She leaves a son Millard S. "Tim" Clark, of Jefferson; two daughters, Ruth Anne Bryant of Damariscotta and Susan Chamblee of Wells; two stepdaughters, Audrey Bartlett of Damariscotta and Joyce Leighton of Waterville; one brother, Paul Bartlett of Newcastle; three sisters, Pauline Hall of Newcastle, Anna Knapp of Goffstown, N.H., Marie Webb of Groton, Conn.; 14 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband in 1969, three brothers, one sister and three grandchildren.

Calling hours were held Sunday at the Strong Funeral Home, 612 Main St., Damariscotta. A service to celebrate her life was held Monday at the Damariscotta Baptist Church, with Russ Thayer, pastor, officiating. She was laid to rest at the Hillside Cemetery, Damariscotta.

Ann Elizabeth (Brown) Miller

DENVER - Ann Elizabeth (Brown) Miller, 71, of Ogunquit, formerly of Boone, Iowa, died Sept. 20, 2003, at University of Colorado Hospital in Denver.

Born Oct. 12, 1931, in Rumford, she was the daughter of the late Harry C. Brown and Nellie Elizabeth (Voter) Brown.

She was a 1950 graduate of Stephens High School in Rumford. She graduated in 1953 from Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston with a nursing degree. She had lived several places throughout her lifetime, including California, Washington, Idaho, Iowa and, her favorite, Maine.

She had been very ill. She had been in and out of York Hospital several times throughout the past five years. She received outstanding health care the entire time. Thank you York Hospital and University of Colorado Hospital for outstanding patient care and family member support.

She was preceded in death by her brother, James T. Brown, of Surfside, S.C.

She is survived by her husband of 50 years, William C. Miller Jr. of Elmer City, Wash.; her children Timothy C. Miller, married to Kristy L. of Clatskanie, Ore.; Thomas A. Miller, married to Linda J. of Cresco, Iowa; and Susan E., married to Joseph B. Young of Cape Neddick; four grandchildren Lisa A. Miller and T. Ryan Miller of Tillamook, Ore.; Daniel T. Miller and Andrew J. Miller of Cresco, Iowa; and one great-grandchild, Tyler J. of Tillamook, Ore.; and several nieces and nephews around the United States.

She was the sister of Timothy C. Brown, married to Marilyn, of Pownal; and the sister-in-law of James T. Brown, "Ginger," of Somerset, Penn.

Memorial services will be announced at a later date. Cards would be welcomed by friends and family and will be received by Susan Young, 355 Clay Hill Road, Cape Neddick, ME 03902.

Claire Twomey Smith

YORK HARBOR - Claire Twomey Smith, 64, of Axholme Road, died Nov. 23, 2003, at Harbor Home in York Harbor after a long illness.

She was born in Biddeford on Feb. 13, 1939, a daughter of Jeremiah O. and Mary Evelyn (Grenier) Twomey Sr.

She attended Saco schools and was a graduate of Thornton Academy. She earned her registered nurse degree from the former Maine Medical Center School of Nursing in Portland.

Her nursing career spanned nearly 40 years. She worked at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital in Portsmouth, N.H., for most of her career as a nursing supervisor and as the director of the short-stay unit. She also worked at the York Hospital, and at the Harbor Home.

She was an avid gardener and doll collector. She designed several popular and beautifully knit dolls with varied themes reflecting the beauty and simplicity of Maine life. She enjoyed family trips to Disney World and annual vacations to Nova Scotia, where she had planned to retire.

She was a devoted mother, grandmother and dear friend to all who knew her. She was known for her wit and possessed a wry sense of humor. She will be truly missed by her family and friends.

She was the former wife of Barry R. Smith of North Hampton, N.H.

She is survived by two sons, Thomas Michael Smith of Bealeton, Va., and Maj. Mark A. Smith, U.S. Army, currently stationed in Ankara, Turkey; Mary Ellen Smith of York; Melissa A. McGuinness of Tall Timbers, Md.; a sister, Mary Ellen Black and a brother, Jerry Twomey, both of Saco; 12 grandchildren and three nephews.

Calling hours were Monday at the J. S. Pelkey Funeral Home, Post Road, Kittery. A graveside service was held Tuesday at St. Mary’s cemetery in Biddeford, where she was laid to rest with her parents.

Memorial contributions may be made to an Alzheimer’s disease charity of one’s choice. Arrangements are through the LaFrance-Lambert Funeral Home, 29 Winter Street, Sanford.

Jean (Brown) Swett

SAYRE, Penn. - Jean (Brown) Swett, 88 of Sayre, Penn., went home to the Lord Friday, Nov. 14, 2003.

Born April 19, 1915, in Alston, Mass., she was the daughter of the late Simeon and Millvenia (Barrett) Brown.

She was raised in Arlington, Mass., graduated from Arlington High School in 1934 and worked as a secretary in Boston for several years.

She was active in serving the Lord in numerous churches during her lifetime, working on committees, participating in Bible studies and teaching Sunday school for more than 20 years. She was also a Girl Scout leader when her children were young.

Her hobbies included gardening, writing poems and short stories, but loved corresponding with others and enjoying time with her family and friends.

She is survived by her four children, JoAnn B. Lumley, of Ossining, N.Y., Frank L. (Vivian) Swett Jr. of Concord, N.H., Janet S. (Leroy) Conklin, of Sayre, Pa., and the Rev. Jean L. Swett, of Sayre, Pa.; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her loving husband of 42 years, F. Lawton Swett; her five sisters, Florence Perkins, Maryann "Mamie" Robinson, Mariam Keroac, Millvenia "Millie" Kotler and Susannah Brown; and her three brothers, Simeon, Arthur and William Brown.

A memorial service was held Nov. 29 at the Contcooktok United Methodist Church. The Rev. Sammi Maxwell was assisted by her daughter, the Rev. Jean L. Swett. Interment is in the New Cemetery, Warner, N.H.

Roger G. Spencer

YORK HARBOR - Roger G. Spencer, 91, of 2 Victoria Court, York Harbor, died Thursday, Nov. 20, 2003, at York Hospital.

He was born Sept. 22, 1912, in Hartford, Conn., the son of Roger M. and Harriet (Gaines) Spencer.

Roger grew up in, and attended schools in Hartford. He worked as an aircraft engineer for many years in the Long Island, N.Y., area and lived in Amityville, N.Y., for more than 25 years.

Roger and his wife retired to York more than 20 years ago. He was a member of the First Parish Congregational Church and the St. Aspinquid Masonic Lodge.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth (Stuhlman) Spencer of York Harbor. He is also survuved by one son, Christopher Spencer of Amityville, N.Y., one daughter, Susan Spencer of Maynard, Mass., four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Monday, Dec. 8, 2003 in the First Parish Congregational Church, York Street, York. Masonic services will be held just prior to the memorial service.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Roger’s name to either York Hospital, 15 Hospital Drive, York, ME 03909, or the York Volunteer Ambulance Association, Salisbury Drive, York, ME 03909.

Arrangements are by the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home.

Marjorie E. Gerald

YORK BEACH - Marjorie E. Gerald, 70, of 11 Cappy’s Lane in York Beach, died on Jan. 23, 2004, at her home following a long illness.

Born in Detroit, on Oct. 10, 1933, she was a daughter of Ezra and Gladys ( Clarke) Littlefield and attended her early education in Detroit before moving to York with her family where she continued school and graduated from York High School. She furthered her education graduating from nursing school.

She was an active member of the Union Congregational Church in York Beach from 1947 until recently. She was a Sunday School teacher for the first and second grades, a member of the Pilgrim Fellowship and enjoyed singing with the choir.

Mrs. Gerald was married to the late Thomas Donaghue "Cappy" Gerald until his death in 1966. She was employed for many years as a nurse at York Hospital. She enjoyed membership in the former Piscataqua Chapter Order of the Eastern Star, currently the Sara Orne Jewett Chapter OES South Berwick, and the York American Legion.

Her love of people was a driving force that allowed her to fight to build the York Beach Camper Park, where she has enjoyed providing a wonderful place for families to come and enjoy Maine. For nearly 15 years, the campground family she enjoyed so much was her life, from the day they closed at the end of the season she would eagerly look forward to their return for another fun-filled summer together. One of the greatest aspects of running the park for her, was being able to work daily with her family at the park.

She is survived by her loving family; a daughter and her husband, Diane and John Spear of York Beach; two sons and their wives, Thomas and Pamela Gerald of York Beach and Timothy and Joann Gerald of York Beach; grandchildren Jennifer Spear, Jessica Gerald and Thomas Jeffrey (TJ) Gerald; her dear friend and loving caregiver, Dr. David Lauter and his wife, Diane, and their children, Mike and Sarah, who provided her and her family with so much love and kindness for so many years; her nieces and their husbands, Diane and Tom Bassett of New Jersey, and Barbara and Pat Rizzutl, also of New Jersey; two sisters-in-law, Ebbie Linscott and Dotty Milligan and their families; and her beloved little dogs, Butter and Princess. She was predeceased by her loving husband, Thomas D. "Cappy" Gerald; three sisters, Susan Littlefield Herman, Gertrude Littlefield Chilson and Barbara Littlefield Anderson; and two brothers, Ernie Littlefield and William Littlefield.

A funeral was celebrated on Tuesday, Jan. 27, at the Union Congregation Church in York Beach with the Rev. Patricia Smith officiating. Burial followed in First Parish cemetery in York. Arrangements by J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Francis Andrew Hagan

READING, Mass. - Francis A. Hagan, 78, died Jan. 24, at the Winchester Hospital, Winchester, Mass.

He was born Sept. 6, 1929, in Chelsea, Mass., to Francis A. Hagan Sr. and Gertrude N. (Babin) Hagan, both deceased. He was a resident of Reading, Mass., for 42 years, and a member of St. Athanasius Church, also in Reading. He was a veteran of the USMC, and a member of the American Legion. He enjoyed traveling to Ireland, where he visited three times. He was also an avid artist using charcoal and oils.

Francis A. Hagan was the husband of the late Barbara L. (Mills) Hagan; loving father of Stephen A. and his wife Leana of Sanford, Maine, and Andrew J. and his wife Janice of Merrimac, N.H., and loving grandfather of four.

Funeral from the Douglass, Edgerley and Bessom Funeral Home, 25 Sanborn St., (corner of Woburn St.), Reading, Mass, on Friday, Jan. 30, at 9 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian burial at St. Athanasius Church, 300 Haverhill St., Reading at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends invited to attend. Funeral home visiting hours, Thursday 5 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in Francis’ memory to the National Kidney Foundation of Massachusetts, 11 Vanderbilt Ave., Suite 105, Norwood, Mass. 02062.

Gilberte (Jill) E. Pelletier

GREENVILLE - Gilberte (Jill) E. Pelletier, 79, loving wife for over 43 years of the late Louis P. Pelletier, died Jan. 24, 2004, after a prolonged illness.

She was born Aug. 22, 1924, in St. Francis, Maine, the daughter of Cyril and Christiann (Ouellette) Jandreau. Jill was an active member of the MTA and MEA throughout her lifelong career as a teacher for the Greenville school systems. Her passion for teaching and willingness to help others has touched the lives of many people in the area.

Jill was also a member of the Daughters of Isabella and the American Legion Auxiliary in addition to being employed at Squaw Mountain and the Greenville Inn for many years. Jill’s love of music and participation in several local choirs and talent shows has been an inspiration to her family.

Because of this,the family has requested in lieu of flowers donations be made in her memory to the Greenville Auditorium Restoration Fund. Checks should be made payable to Greenville Auditorium Fund c/o Janice Lavigne P.O. Box 52 Greenville ME 04441.

Jill is survived by two sons, Jeffrey Pelletier of Salisbury, Conn., and Martin Pelletier of Holderness, N.H.; five daughters, Christiann Fredricksen of Creston, Iowa, Mariette Sinclair of Greenville, Roberta Raasch of Pompano Beach, Fla., Jacqueline Redmond of York Beach, and Carole Hahner of Kansas City; 10 grandchildren and three great grandchildren; three sisters, Charlotte Pelletier, Jacqueline Virgalla and Jeanne Jalbert, also several nieces, nephews and cousins. She is also survived by many special friends.

There was a gathering of friends and family in celebration of her life Tuesday, Jan. 27, at the Black Frog Restaurant in Greenville. A graveside service will held in the spring at the Greenville Cemetery. Arrangements by McCrory Funeral Home.

David T. Meskill

YORK HARBOR - David T. Meskill was born Aug. 9, 1917, in Boston, son of David T. Meskill and Florence M. Flynn, of South Berwick.

He graduated from Roxbury Latin School in Boston and then from the University of Notre Dame in 1939, joining the General Electric Company in Bridgeport, Conn.

During World War II he was commissioned in the U.S. Navy and served as supply officer aboard the USS Spence. After the war he returned to General Electric in Bridgeport. In 1957, he was transferred to Chicago and resided in Wilmette, Ill., until he moved to York Harbor in 2002.

In 1942 he married Adelaide Hogan. They have five children, Kathleen and her husband, Richard Wozencroft, of Washington, D.C.; Timothy and his wife, Joan Murphy, of Seattl.; Susan and her husband, John Foote, of Windsor, Conn., Patricia and her husband, Christopher Marston, of Boston, and Maureen and her husband, John O’Donnell, of Portsmouth, N.H.; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

During his 45 years in Wilmette, he was a dedicated volunteer in village projects, especially those related to senior citizens. He enjoyed being actively involved in St. Francis Xavier Parish. His hobby has been writing, including serving as editor of the parish bulletin for 21 years, a quarterly column on the Class of 1939 for Notre Dame Magazine, and a periodic newsletter for his Roxbury Latin class, and shipmates of the USS Spence.

A funeral Mass was held Saturday, Jan. 17, at St. Christopher Church in York Harbor. A reception followed the Mass in the church hall. Interment will be in the spring at New Town Cemetery, in Rollinsford, N.H.

Robert F. Potter

BEDFORD, Mass. – Robert F. Potter, 85, of Port Charlotte, Fla., and formerly of Bedford, Mass., died Sunday, Jan. 4, 2004, at his residence in Port Charlotte.

He was born May 5, 1916, in Haverhill, Mass., and has been wintering in Port Charlotte for more than 20 years. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Navy. Mr. Potter did many things over his life. He retired as a supervisor of housekeeping at the Veterans Hospital in Bedford.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Port Charlotte and was an usher at the church. He had also attended the First Baptist Church in Cape Neddick during the summer months. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans. He volunteered for Meals-on-Wheels, was a member of Cast of Characters Actors Troupe and a member of the York Senior Center. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.

Surviving are his loving wife of 58 years of marriage, Lucille Potter of Port Charlotte; two daughters, Alice C. Atwood of Maynard, Mass., and Irene Sutkus of New Hampton, N.H.; a son, Richard E. Potter of Dallas; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Jan. 24, at 10:30 a.m. in the First Baptist Church, Bedford, Mass. Burial will be in Shawsheen Cemetery, Bedford.
