Eleanor S. Parsons

KITTERY - Eleanor S. Parsons, 94, formerly of Picott Road, died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004, at the Haven Health Nursing Home in Hampton, N.H.

She was born Nov. 11, 1909. She grew up and worked most of her life in Massachusetts.

She was married to the late Lester W. Parsons, of York, and they resided on Picott Road in Kittery. Eleanor was a beautician and owned her own shops in Andover, Medford, Malden and Wilmington, Mass.

She is survived by two children, Leroy Ferguson of Madrid, Spain, and Eleanor Ferguson of Sarasota, Fla.; nine grandchildren;12 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Memorial services were held Friday at the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home. Spring Interment will be in the First Parish Cemetery.

Donald H. Stewart

YORK HARBOR - Donald H. Stewart, 83, of 644 York St., died Monday, Feb. 2, 2004 at York Hospital after a long illness.

He was born in Jefferson Meadows, N.H., Feb. 2, 1921 the son of Donald H., Sr. and Anna (Lowe) Stewart. He was a 1938 graduate of Rochester High School in New Hampshire and attended the University of New Hampshire for two years.

Mr. Stewart served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was stationed in Panama and the European Theater.

Donald was employed as an installer and repairman for New England Telephone for 38 years and was a member of the New England Pioneers.

He was a member of the First Parish Congregational Church of York. He was a former member of the Rochester, N.H., Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Rochester Lions.

He was an avid reader and formerly operated a lobster boat known as the "Miss Helen" from York Harbor. He was married on Jan. 23, 1944 and he and his wife just celebrated 60 years of marriage.

He was predeceased by his brother, Dr. Kenneth Stewart.

Survivors include his wife, Helen (Rolfe) Stewart of York Harbor; a son, John R. Stewart and his wife, Marcia of South Bristol; a daughter, Judith Dominici and her husband David of Litchfield, N.H.; a sister, Roberta Stewart of Roanoke, Va.; and five grandchildren, Erica Stewart, Lance Baldwin, Samuel Stewart, Dr. Laura Dominici and Matthew Dominici.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, Feb. 6 in the First Parish Church of York, York St. A collation will follow the funeral service in Moody Hall. Visiting hours will be held Thursday, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road. If desired, memorial donations may be made to the American Lung Assoc. of Maine, 122 State St., Augusta, ME 04330.

Elizabeth H. Haskell

BERWICK - Elizabeth H. "Liz" Haskell, 13, of 10 Heritage Drive, Berwick, died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2003, from injuries received from an auto accident in Berwick.

She was born in York, the daughter of Timothy H. and Gail (Baxter) Haskell. She resided in York and attended York schools for most of her life, moving to Berwick in February 2003.

Elizabeth was an eighth-grade student at Noble Middle School where she was an honor roll student and received a Scholastic Achievement Award this past quarter. She excelled in sports and music. Elizabeth was captain of the Noble Middle School field hockey team. She enjoyed skiing with her family and recently joined the school ski club. She was also an avid swimmer. She was an accomplished singer and was a member of the Vocal Excel, the school chorus and select chorus and recently was selected as a member of the York County District Chorus. She was a member of the Noble Middle School Band and Jazz Band. She played the piano, clarinet, violin, bass and had recently started playing the electric fretless bass. She enjoyed performing in school band assemblies, at family gatherings and in local talent performances, including the Music Hall of Portsmouth and the Maine Music Festival. She had recently started to compose some of her own music. Her musical talents and her spirit to share them with her family and friends will be greatly missed.

Elizabeth enjoyed nature and animals and was known to bring a few wild creatures into her home. She would spend quiet time in her backyard whittling and had a vast array of rocks that she had collected. Liz was an avid reader and a huge fan of the "Lord of the Rings." She could recite lengthy portions of the movie and perform the theme music. She was a communicant of St. George’s Episcopal Church of York Harbor.

She is survived by her parents, Tim and Gail Haskell, a sister, Christiana D. Haskell, and a brother, Benjamin A. Haskell, all of Berwick; her maternal grandparents, Kenneth and Nancy (Bishop) Baxter of Marblehead, Mass.; paternal grandparents, Hugh and Elsie (Lukens) Haskell of Stratham, N.H.; her aunts and uncles, Jay and Jane Baxter, Scott and Judith Haskell and Steven and Nancy Haskell; and many cousins.

A funeral will be held at noon, Wednesday, Jan. 7, in St. Christopher Catholic Church in York. The Rev. Paige Blair, rector of St. George’s Church, will officiate. Interment in the First Parish cemetery of York. A reception will follow the funeral in St. Christopher Church Hall. Visiting hours, Tuesday, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. at the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York. In Elizabeth’s memory, donations may be made to the Elizabeth Haskell Memorial Fund, c/o Kennebunk Saving Bank, 2 School St., Berwick, ME 03901. The fund will benefit music education at the Noble Middle School. Or the Elizabeth Haskell Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o St. Aspinquid Masonic Lodge, PO Box 408, York, ME 03909.

Carl S. Merrill

Carl S. Merrill, 84, of York, died Jan. 4, 2004, in Portland.

Carl was born on the family farm in Amherst, N.H., Feb. 21, 1919. He was the son of Sumner F. and Olive K. Merrill. He attended the one-room schoolhouse in Cricket Corner and graduated from the Brick School in Amherst Village.

During World War II, Carl served as a seabee in the Pacific. Upon his return he lived in Amherst and served on several town-building committees. He was a member of the Amherst Volunteer Fire Department for many years. Carl owned and operated Merrill and Boyden Metal Fabrication Co. in Milford, N.H. He was member of the Benevolent Masonic Lodge No. 7 in New Hampshire.

In 1966 he married Dorothy Wood and moved to York. While living in York, Carl volunteered for the York Hospital, served as tree warden and was an active member of the First Parish Congregational Church.

Carl was predeceased by a son, Bruce Merrill and by a brother, Oliver Merrill.

Including his wife, Carl is survived by a daughter, Carlene Merrill, her husband and her sons Jeffrey and Bruce Johnston and their families.

He is also survived by four stepchildren, Ralph, Bill and George Wood and Ginny Gledhill and their families. Their families include six grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

A private service will be held for Carl at his home. Memorial donations may be made to either the York Volunteer Ambulance Assoc. PO. Box 238, York, ME 03909, or to the American Cancer Society, NE Division, 1 Main St. Suite 300, Topsham, ME 04086. Arrangements by Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home.

Horace "Hod" Newton Milliken

SOUTHPORT, N.C. - Horace "Hod" Newton Milliken, 80, of 807 East Nash St., died Saturday, Dec. 20, at Dosher Memorial Hospital.

The memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Philip’s Episcopal Church, where he was a member.

Mr. Milliken was born Aug. 14, 1923, in Boston, son of the late Ned and Olive Hargraves Milliken. A U.S. Navy veteran, he was a retired sales representative, a member of Theta Chi Fraternity, and a member of the American Legion.

Survivors include a son, Bruce Milliken of Christiansted, Virgin Islands; a stepdaughter, Susan Hammons of Amsterdam, Netherlands; and two grandchildren, Genevieve Keller and Mark Hodgins.

Memorial contributions may be made to Southport-Oak Island Animal Rescue (SOAR), St. Charles Place, Southport, NC, 28461 or Paws Place, 3701 Boiling Spring Road, Winnabow, NC, 28459, or Southport Garden Club.

Robert Michael Magocsi

YORK - Robert Michael Magocsi of York, died unexpectdly Monday evening, Jan. 5, 2004.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y. on June 15, 1942, Robert graduated from York High School in 1960. After high school, he attended Hobart College in Geneva, N.Y., but put aside his studies to join the United States Army in 1965. He received his commission as an officer following graduation from Officer Candidate School, and ended his Army career in 1968 as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

After leaving the military he returned to school, and received a bachelor of science degree in 1970 from Madison College in Harrisonburg, Va., and his Juris Doctor in 1982 from Suffolk University in Boston. He worked as an independent land and title researcher doing historical deed research at the Registry of Deeds in Alfred.

Robert had four hobbies - fishing, fishing, fishing, and fishing. Robert was a member of the Coastal Conservation Association, the York Fish and Game Club, and the Sportsman’s Alliance of Maine, and he graciously served on the state of Maine Recreational Marine Fisheries Advisory Council since its inception in 1996. He was instrumental in representing the voice of fellow recreational saltwater fishermen.

Robert was predeceased by his father, Dr. Alexander Magocsi, and by his brother, Stephen Magocsi. Survivors include his mother, Helen Magocsi of York; his wife Laura Magocsi-Wilson; a son, Jotham Magocsi of St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands; sisters Marianne Pei and Joanne Hepp, of South Salem, N.Y. and Wells, respectively; brother Alexander Magocsi Jr., of York; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held in York on Sunday, Jan. 11 at the Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home in York In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the York Volunteer Ambulance Association PO Box 238, York, Maine 03909.

Elizabeth E. Norman

WELLS - Elizabeth E. Norman, a 93-year-old resident of Wells died Friday, Jan. 9, 2004, at her home.

Mrs. Norman was born on May 18, 1910, the daughter of George William Wakefield III and Myra Elizabeth (Hatch) Wakefield.

Elizabeth owned and operated Granny’s Umbrella, a catering service known for her baked goods and wedding cakes, for more than 20 years. She enjoyed baking, knitting, flower gardening, and yard sales. She was also a member of the Wells Branch Community Hall, and the Wells High School Alumni, class of 1927.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Madelyn (Norman) Libby and a granddaughter, Ramona Arline Libby.

She is survived by a grandson, Richard Libby of Wells; a granddaughter, Rebecca (Libby) Gregoire of Wells; and five great grandchildren, Angela (Libby) Webb of Sanford, Peter Gregoire, Jr. of Wells, Joseph Freeman of Wells, Marci Libby of Wells, and Shauna Libby of Springhill, Fla.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Animal Welfare Society, Inc., P.O. Box 43, West Kennebunk, Maine 04094-0043.

Elizabeth’s grandson Richard Libby officiated her service, which was held Tuesday, Jan. 13. Arrangements by the Bibber Memorial Chapel in Wells.

Arthur D. Grant

YORK - Arthur "Danny" Grant, 73, of 61 Mill Lane Road, York, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004, at his residence.

He was born in Melrose, Mass., on Jan. 28, 1930 the son of Arthur J. and Jessie (White) Grant and was a graduate of York High School.

Mr. Grant had served in the U.S. Air Force for four years, and attended military communications school.

He was employed in the Communications Department of New England Telephone in Portsmouth for many years.

He attended the Beech Ridge Assembly of God Church in York. Mr. Grant was active with his childrens’ activities when he was younger. He was well-known at Norma’s Restaurant and Rick’s Restaurant in York where he could be seen many mornings of the week.

Survivors include his mother, Jessie R. Grant of York, a son, Scott Grant and his wife, Charlene of New Port Richey, Fla.; three daughters, Kim Carrier and her husband, Jerry of West Palm, Fla., Joan Pantas and her husband, Lou and Robin Andrews and her husband Tom all of New Port Richey, Fla.; two sisters, Mrs. Elias (Janet) Kyreages of York Harbor and Mrs. Ronald (Phyllis) Stimpson of York; seven grandchildren all of Florida, five nieces and many great nieces and great nephews.

A memorial service was held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 10 in the Beech Ridge Assembly of God Church, Beech Ridge Road, York. Interment will be in the spring in the First Parish Cemetery. Visiting hours were Friday, 6-8 p.m. at the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home.

Caroline Grace Page Gronros

YORK - Caroline Grace Page Gronros, a resident of York, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004.

She was the daughter of Dr. Kingman Benjamin Page and Amy Johnston Page. She was born in New York City and educated in private schools in New York.

She had a career in advertising and personnel work. She was a student of American history, a collector of specimen crystal minerals and an amateur chef. She was very kindhearted, outspoken, determined and generous woman who was known to be very charitable. She was a member of the DAR and with her husband, traveled extensively in the United States and abroad.

Carol was very devoted to her husband of 62 years, Warren who predeceased her. Together they built a nature retreat for themselves in upstate New York and always referred to it as their "Woodland Place." They enjoyed many hours there with family and friends. They loved camping, cross country skiing, snow-shoeing and any outdoor activity. Carol and Warren were life-long cat lovers and had many as pets over the years.

Carol was a devoted gardener and nature enthusiast and knew the names of every plant and bird. She could tell you the common name, Latin name and something about almost any tree, bush or flower and had a special knowledge of hardy shrubs that were attractive to birds.

She is survived by two nephews, their families, many friends and admirers. Carol will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew her well.

A memorial service is planned for a later date. Friends who desire to make a donation in her memory may do so to York Hospital, 15 Hospital Drive, York, Maine 03909. Arrangements by Lucas & Eaton Funeral home, York.

Marilyn Pellington Muckley

KENNEBUNK - Marilyn Pellington Muckley died Jan. 10, 2004, after a long battle with cancer.

She was born on Nov. 30, 1925, the daughter of Hazel and Albert Mory. Marilyn attended Tusculum College and Purdue University and graduated from the Katharine Gibbs School in New York City.

She served on the National Management Council headed by Dr. Lillian Gilbreth. She was later executive secretary to the president of McGraw-Hill Publishing Company in New York.

In 1960 she married William Muckley. Upon his retirement they moved to York, where she was active in the York Historical Society and Garden Club.

She was predeceased by her husband, William.

Marilyn is survived by her sister, Betty Lou Shuris and husband Robert; two nephews, Robert and Donald, and their wives; and two grandnephews, Neal and Evan.

Services will be private. Should friends desire, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1 Main Street, Suite 300, Topsham, Maine, 04086, in Marilyn’s name.
