J. Frank Gerrity II

BROOKLINE, Mass. - J. Frank Gerrity II, succumbed to cancer and died March 24, 2004 at home in Brookline, Mass. born in Newton, Mass., he attended the Country Day School and Newton High School, where after his junior year he entered Harvard College at age 16 and graduated from there in 1939.

After a brief stint in the family lumber business, Frank attended Harvard Business School. After graduating in 1942 he joined the U.S. Navy from which he was discharged a full lieutenant in 1946. From there he started what would be a long and distinguished commercial career at the helm of Gerrity Lumber Company, which grew to the largest privately held lumber business east of the Mississippi.

An avid member of the community, Frank was on boards, both charitable and commercial. Commercially he dearly loved his stint as a board member of the then New England Merchants National Bank. At the age of 29, in 1947, he was made its predecessor’s, The New England Trust, youngest director in history.

Over the years with his quick wit and incisive mind grew his list of accomplishments; honorary consul for Iceland in Boston, treasurer of the board of The Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, treasurer of the board of York Hospital, president of the board of the Jackson Lab, treasurer of the Episcopal Diocesan Council and a host of others. His commitment to each ensured each was left stronger than when he joined.

More than all this was Frank, the husband and father. Dutifully he would attend the innumerable athletic contests of any of his five children. This was especially laudable given the dubious athletic abilities inherited therein. He adored his wife Ruth, of 61 years, which he told her everyday, and his children, an affection that survived those rare occasions when his strong spirit conflicted with any of those of his children. He claimed his fingers never fully healed from being bloodied by the winter morning lacings of 10 vintage ski boots. Although not always greeted enthusiastically, his guidance over his children’s social, academic and athletic undertakings were unflaggingly loving and supportive.

Second only to his family was his love of York Harbor, Maine. There competitive, (dare I say "contentious"), tennis matches would regularly generate howls throughout the neighborhood. Later in his life, fall and winter provided long walks on the beach with his beloved Labrador retriever. All who knew him will sorely miss him.

He leaves his wife, Ruth, of Brookline, Mass.; his daughters, Margot Finley of Brookline, Mass., Ruth Timme of Avon, Conn., and Betsey Lamson of Hilton Head, S.C.; and his sons, Peter of Cumberland, and James of Weston, Mass. Also surviving are 14 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A funeral service will be held at noon on Saturday, April 3 in the First Parish Congregational Church of York. Memorial donations may be made to Jackson Laboratory, Bar Harbor, ME 04609; The Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, 243 Charles St., Boston, MA 02114; or the Health Care Dimensions (Hospice), 764 Main St., Waltham, MA 02451. Arrangements by the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home.

Ada E. (Carlson) Prescott

MARION - Ada E. (Carlson) Prescott, better known as "Sandy" Prescott, died peacefully Sunday, March 21, 2004 at the Sippican HealthCare Center. She was the wife of the late Philip T. Prescott.

Born in Cambridge, Mass., she was the daughter of the late Capt. John and Evelyn Carlson, both immigrants from Sweden in 1910. She graduated from Abbott Academy in 1934, married in 1942, and moved to Marion and Tabor Academy with her family in 1956 from Westford, Mass., where they were part of the school’s rebuilding after the ’55 hurricane. She stayed at home raising her children for several years before taking a position as the school secretary at Sippican Elementary School.

Before her retirement in 1981 she was employed as the secretary to the president of Sippican Corporation in Marion.

She was an active volunteer with the Tobey Hospital Guild and manned the hospital’s front desk on Sunday afternoons for many years, advising, consoling and directing visitors. She was a member of the First Congregational Church of Marion for almost 50 years. She was a quiet supporter of many local organizations, not looking for public recognition. Gardening, bird watching, reading and golf were her retirement joys.

She traveled with the Eastern Star across the state representing the Agawam Chapter 121 as past worthy matron (‘76-’77). In accordance with her wishes, her ashes will be scattered in the waters off Ned’s Point Lighthouse in Mattapoisett. This was her favorite place to drink coffee, feed the sea gulls, watch the wind surfers, and admire the sunsets. She had read once that "to scatter ashes upon the water frees the soul and allows a new life to begin."

A memorial service will be held in May for friends and family.

Survivors include her children Nancy Feeney of New Bedford, Mass., Peter and Karen Prescott of South Berwick, and Chip and Julie Prescott of Lady Lake, Fla.; grandchildren, Meghan and Erin Feeney of New Bedford, Stephanie, Glenn and Kelly Prescott of Marion; Timothy and Steven Prescott of Maine and four great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made in her name to the Mattapoisett Tree Planting Committee, P.O. Box 435, Mattapoisett, MA 02739 for a tree to be planted in her memory at Ned’s Point Park.
