Charles H. Peirce

GATES MILLS, Ohio - Charles Horace Peirce, 93, who had resided in York for nearly 40 years, died in Gates Mills, Ohio, March 24.

He was born on Aug. 13, 1910, in Arlington, Mass., to Charles Appleton Peirce and Laura Hobbs Peirce. After graduating from MIT in the depths of the Great Depression when the only mechanical engineer to have a job was about to marry the boss’s daughter, Charles Peirce soon found work as a safety engineer at National Aniline Chemical Company in Buffalo, N.Y., where his assignments included entering and inspecting the vessels in which various coal tar dyes were compounded, breaking strikes, and fighting fires. Along with other salaried employees, he worked "six and a half days a week with every other Christmas off."

In 1936, he moved back to the Boston area as a sales engineer for the Taylor Instrument Company, beginning a career that would make him a familiar visitor in nearly every industrial establishment in New England. He remained active in the field of instrumentation and controls for about 15 years, working for various firms and even teaching a short course at MIT during World War II, much to the consternation (he claimed) of his old professors. In the mid-1950s he began distributing innovative nylon polymer belting for industrial drives and conveyors.

Charles H. Peirce and Maria Kaakinen, of Fitchburg, Mass., were both college students working for the summer at the Marshall House Hotel in York Harbor when they met in 1929. They were married in 1933. After settling in Lexington, Mass., in 1940, they stopped frequently in York to enjoy the ocean and visit old friends. On a visit in 1958, they decided to buy the old Park Place bed and breakfast in York Harbor (the stone entrance is York Street across from Route 103) and restore it to a private home. They could often be seen walking in the early morning or swimming in the late afternoon at York Harbor Beach.

Charles Peirce was active in The First Parish Church, Old York Historical Society, and St. Aspinquid Lodge A.F&A.M. He continued to reside in York, on Summit Lane, after Maria died in 1988 until, enfeebled by strokes, he moved to the home of a son and daughter-in-law.

He is survived by children, Charles A. (Rosalie) Peirce II of Sarasota, Fla., and Walpole, Mass.; William S. (Nynke) Peirce of Gates Mills, Ohio; Laura (Lloyd) Lehn of Annandale, Va.; Martha Butler of State College, Pa.; seven grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. An Interment service will be held on June 5 at 9:30 a.m. at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Arlington, followed by a memorial service at 2 p.m. in the First Parish Church in York.

Contributions in his memory may be made to Old York Historical Society, PO Box 312, York, ME 03909.

Kenneth M. Burke

YORK - Kenneth M. Burke of York died on the afternoon of July 27, 2004, at the Maine Veterans’ Home in Scarborough.

The eldest son of Cyril and Vashti (Edwards) Burke, he was born March 27, 1924. He leaves behind his wife, Sylvia H. (Sargent) Burke.

He is survived by his son, Roger D. Burke; daughter-in-law, India Mars-Burke; three grandchildren, Kodiak, Kianna and Kimonee, who reside in Cape Neddick; two brothers, Edward, and Stanley Burke; and two sisters, Vashti Tanner and Beryl Burke. All of these siblings reside in the greater Boston area. He also leaves behind a large extended family and countless friends.

He is predeceased by his siblings Cyril Burke, Vernon Burke and Iris Burke.

He graduated from Boston English High School in 1940. During World War II, he entered the Seabees after which he enrolled in the Navy ROTC program, and graduated from Tufts University in 1947 as an ensign in the U.S. Navy Reserve with a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering. This was a four-year course which he completed in three years. He was employed at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and worked in the engineering department and for NAVSEA’s PERA(SS), only to retire in 1977.

He was a unique individual with extraordinary talents. His fervent love of music was one source of inspiration that buoyed his spirit while engaged in many undertakings. After retirement from federal service, he tutored students for several years in various musical instruments. Deep convictions regarding the importance of lifelong learning for broad education made him a strong advocate for higher learning. His math skills strengthened many a struggling student who needed additional tutelage in algebra, geometry, calculus and trigonometry. His love for youngsters drove him and served as a fountain into which he poured his generosity, knowledge and friendly nature, as well as the fount from which he drew strength and satisfaction.

A faithful servant of St. George’s Episcopal Church in York Harbor, he sang in the choir for many years. He played with bands around New England carrying his brand of rhythm to the crowds that turned out for a delightful cultural experience. His enthusiastic, whimsical, positive outlook on life was his saving grace, and he shared that grace with whomever he came into contact. An outstretched helping hand, a hearty hello, a heartfelt hug and an open smile accompanied by a deep rumbling chuckle are a few of the treasures he transmuted.

He was always approachable. He was a gifted communicator who relished the opportunity to share experiences, opinions and insights into world issues for stimulating discourse. His achievements are many but they fade in comparison to his generous humanity and the dignity he bore throughout life. He saw life as a precious gift to be shared and embraced. He connected with others through his God-given talents and generous nature, and he appreciated whatever the relationship gave in return, with equanimity. Especially charming in nature, he was the consummate gentleman, and his easy grace will be sorely missed by those privileged individuals who have been fortunate enough to have shared his company.

His legacy is one of patient endurance, calm perseverance and discipline. He never regarded adversity as a handicap but as a fact of life to be neutralized with positive attitude and action. His comportment displayed love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness and self-control. Indeed it was his mastery of these fruits of the spirit that made him more than a conqueror in the face of obstacles. Beloved husband and father, brother and friend, cherished grandfather, he lives in our hearts forever.

A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 7, at Trinity Church, on York Street in York Harbor. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the Maine Multiple Sclerosis Association, 77 Preble St., Portland, ME 04101; the Music program at Maine Veterans’ Home in Scarborough, 290 U.S. Route 1, Scarborough, ME 04074; or the Music Program at York High School, 1 Robert Stevens Drive, York, ME 03909.
