Aldine G. Bemis

Aldine G. Bemis, 84, died, Friday, May 21, 2004, at the home of her son.

She was born in Worcester, Mass., on June 9, 1919, the daughter of Loring G. and Gertrude E. (Flagg) Fuller. She grew up in Boylston, Mass., and after graduating from Commerce High School in Worcester, Mass., she was employed at Merchants National Bank.

In 1942 she married and moved to York Beach. She and her husband, Elwyn H. Bemis, who died in March of this year, were married for 62 years. She worked at Maine National Bank from which she retired in 1977 after many years of service. She was a member of the York Hospital Women’s Guild, the Hammond Organ Society, the Union Congregation Church in York Beach and the First Congregational Church in Boylston, Mass.

Aldine is survived by a son, Claude Bemis and his wife, Bonnie of York; a daughter, Aldine Fossum and her husband, Howard of Glen Rose, Texas; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held for Aldine and Elwyn Bemis at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, June 9, in the First Congregational Church, Boylston, Mass. In lieu of flowers, donations in memorial donations may be sent to Portsmouth-Derry Home Health and Hospice Services, 95 Albany St., Unit 11, Portsmouth, NH 03801.

Ruth E. Foster

YORK - Ruth E. Foster, 95, of York, died, May 30, 2004, at her residence. She was born on June 25, 1908 to James and Floris Paisley of North Andover, Mass. She married G. Lawrence Foster in June of 1933. For many years, Ruth taught high school English in the Melrose school system. When she retired and moved to York in 1968, she became active in the garden club and gave many years of volunteer service to York Hospital.

She is survived by a nephew, William Paisley, of West Boxford, Mass., and his daughters Debbie and Pamela; a niece, Sara Kilb, of York, and her children, Bonnie and John Crie. She is also survived by her husband’s niece, Jean Forti of Hampton, N.H.

A graveside memorial service will be held at the Puritan Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery, Peabody, Mass., at a later date. Anyone wishing to remember Ruth may send a donation to the York Food Pantry, P.O. Box 243, York, ME 03909 or to the Salvation Army, P.O. Box 3647, Portland, ME 04104.

Adrian B. Moulton Jr.

CAPE NEDDICK - Adrian B. Moulton Jr., 81, of 49 Cape Neddick Road. died Wednesday, June 2, 2004, at York Hospital.

He was born in York Beach, the son of Adrian B., Sr. and Emma (Bizzo) Moulton and was a graduate of York High School.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, serving in North Africa and the South Pacific. After returning from his military service he returned to the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard where he was employed as a shipfitter for more than 30 years, retiring in 1976.

He was a lifetime member and past commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Boardman-Ellis Post 6977. He had also served the V.F.W. as junior and senior vice-commander, surgeon and quartermaster. Adrian was also a member of the American Legion Post 56 of York.

He enjoyed gardening and landscaping. He was a woodworker and cabinetmaker and was known for his antique furniture reproductions.

Survivors include his wife, Carol (Newton) Moulton of Cape Neddick; two daughters, Judith Schlisser of Etna, Maine, and Jennifer Holt of Mariaville, Maine; two stepsons, John C. Herrin of Cape Neddick, and Thomas R. Herrin of North Waterboro; a stepdaughter, Maryann Ingalls of Bangor; a brother, Myron Moulton of Cape Neddick; seven grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, June 27, at 1 p.m. at the V.F.W. Post 6977, in Cape Neddick. There will be no visiting hours. Memorial donations may be made to the VFW Post 6977, PO Box 201, York Beach, ME 03910. Arrangements by the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home.

Kenneth L. Snow

YORK - Kenneth L. Snow, a resident of York for the past five years, formerly of Westford, died Tuesday, June 1, 2004, in York at the age of 69. He was the husband of the late Barbara J. (Woodhouse) Snow.

Born in Nashua, N.H., on Sept. 11, 1934, he was the son of the late Roy E. and Mae (Strait) Snow. Mr. Snow was a graduate of the New Hampton School system, and Paul Smith College. He was a veteran of the Korean War. Before retirement, he was employed as a sales representative at Plastics Etc. Incorporated in North Andover Mass., and before that he worked as a plastics salesman with Black & Webster in Waltham, Mass., for most of his career. Mr. Snow was a member of the Meridian Lodge AF&AM in Natick, Mass.

He is survived by two daughters, Cheryl L. Anderson of Standish, Maine, and Cynthia L. Gray of Dracut, Mass.; five grandchildren, Michelle A. Ingalls of Norridgewalk, Maine, Kyle J. Ingalls and Dylan E. Ingalls, both of Standish, Maine, Janelle M. Gray of Dracut, and Melena Anderson of Standish, Maine; and one step-sister, Carolyn Davis of York. He was predeceased by his step-mother, Alberta Snow. Funeral services were held Saturday, June 5, with burial at Edgewood Cemetery, Nashua. N.H.

Rodney E. Laughton

FALLS CHURCH, Va. - Rodney E. Laughton, lately of Fairfax, Va., died May 22, 2004. He was the beloved husband of the late Virginia Isabelle Laughton; father of Carolee Laughton of Denver, Colo., Susann Edwards of Centreville, Va. and Ruthena Miller; brother of Bernice Rogers of Georgetown, Mass.; and two grandchildren, Jennifer Miselis and Adam Edwards. Interment at a later date at Sun Memorial Park, Sun City, Ariz. Arrangements by National Funeral Home.

Clayton J. Parsons

Committal for Clayton J. Parsons will be held at 2 p.m. June 24, 2004 at First Parish Cemetary. Family and friends are invited.

Archibald L. Davidson Jr.

YORK HARBOR - Archibald L. Davidson Jr., 89, of Sentry Hill, formerly of 725 York St. died Monday, June 14, 2004, at York Harbor Health Care at Sentry Hill.

He was born in Andover, Mass., the son of Archibald L. Sr. and Jean Waldey and was a graduate of Punchard High School in Andover and Bentley College of Business of Boston. Mr. Davidson had served as radio operator for the Flying Tigers stationed in China in the US Army during World War II.

Mr. Davidson was a comptroller in Lawrence, Mass., for many years. He had worked at Mead Packaging, Lawrence Paperboard and Shawsheen Woolen Mills. He had assisted in the operation of Libby’s Oceanside Camp from the 1940s until 1974 when he took over the full-time operation until his retirement in 1997. He wintered in Indian Rocks Beach, Fla.

He was a member of the West Parish Congregational Church of Andover, Mass. He had lived in Andover until 1974 and was a lifetime member of the VFW. Archie was also a lifetime member of the American Legion Roger Ramsdell Post #56 of York. He was a member of the Rotary Club of Ogunquit and sponsored 10 Paul Harris Fellows for immediate family and past-presidents of the Ogunquit Rotary for the Polio Plus Campaign. He was an avid golfer and member of the York Golf and Tennis Club and enjoyed square dancing.

He was predeceased by his wife, Cora Evelyn (Libby) Davidson who died in 1985.

Survivors include a son, Norman S. Davidson and his wife, Candy, of York Harbor; two grandchildren, Brien Davidson and Mark Davidson and his wife, Jennifer, and one great-granddaughter, Alyssa Davidson.

A funeral was held Tuesday, June 22, at the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home. Burial was in the First Baptist Cemetery, Kittery Point. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Rotary International, Paul Harris Fellowship Fund, 1 Rotary Center, 1560 Sherman Ave., Evanston, Ill. 60201.

Ella E. Day

QUINCY, Mass. - Ella E. Day, 96 of Quincy, Mass., a retired teacher in the Milton, Mass., school system, died Dec. 9, 2003 at the Crestview Nursing Home in Quincy, Mass.

She was born in Maine, the daughter of David and Alice (Towle) Day. She earned a graduate degree in education from Boston University.

Miss Day had been a resident of Quincy for more than 40 years.

She was the aunt of the late Andrew Day, Judith Day and Olney Day.

Surviving family members are three nephews, Melvin Day of Waterboro, Arnold Day of South Portland, and Raymond Day of Limerick; three nieces, Avis Atkinson of East Waterboro, Hazel Vince of Limerick, and Carolyn Prince of Nashua, N.H. Also survived by several grandnieces and grandnephews.

Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, June 25 in the First Parish Cemetery, York. Arrangements by Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, York.

Ruth E. Foster

YORK - Ruth E. Foster, 95 of York died May 30, 2004, in York.

Dorothy B. Laboissonniere

YORK - Dorothy B. Laboissonniere, 85, of 30 Payne Road, died Sunday, June 20, 2004, at her residence after a long illness.

She was born Oct. 16, 1918 in Providence, R.I., the daughter of Joseph C. and Christina (Boucher) Barlow and was a graduate of Classical High School of Providence.

Mrs. Laboissonniere resided in Smithfield, R.I., for most of her life, moving to Maine in November, 2001.

She was a communicant of St. Michael’s Church of Smithfield and St. Phillip’s Church of Greenville, R.I., and past president of the St. Michael’s Women’s Group. She was also very active in the Rhode Island Federation of Garden Clubs and was a past president of the Apple Blossom Garden Club and was member of the Veridames of Providence College.

She was predeceased by her husband, Adrien L. Laboissonniere, who died in 1999.

Survivors include her daughter, with whom she resided, Carol A. Laboissonniere of York; a son, Adrien L. Laboissonniere and his wife, Lois of Portsmouth, R.I.; and three grandchildren: Alison, Leah and Jason Laboissonniere.

A funeral Mass will be held 9:30 a.m. Friday, June 25 in St. Christopher Church, on York Street. Visiting hours will be held Thursday, 6 - 8 p.m. at the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road. Interment at 1:30 p.m., Friday in St. Joseph’s cemetery Chapel, West Greenwich, R.I. Family requests memorial donations may be made to Hospice of York, 15 Hospital Drive, York, ME 03909.

Helen Turner Massey

Helen Turner Massey, 90, of Betterton, Md., died peacefully on Thursday, June 17, 2004, at Chestertown Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Chestertown, Md.

Mrs. Massey was born Dec. 17, 1913, in Betterton, to the late Richard S. and Naomi Cacy Turner. Helen was the great granddaughter of Elizabeth Betterton Turner, namesake of the town of Betterton. She had lived most of her married life in Upper Darby, Pa., and in 1985 moved to York to be near her son, until returning to Betterton in 2001. She was a member of the York Senior Center and a former member of the Cardington Fire Dept. Women’s Auxiliary of Upper Darby, Penn.

Mrs. Massey was preceded in death by her husband of 41 years, John Evans Massey Sr. who died in 1984. She is survived by her son John "Jack" Massey, Jr. and his wife Millie of Betterton, and one granddaughter, Jackie Massey and her husband Tim Healy of London, England; along with several nephews and nieces.

She was a graduate of the Class of 1933 of Chestertown High School.

The family wishes to extend its sincere appreciation to Dr. Fredrick Delboy, the Chester River Hospital, and everyone at the Chestertown Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for their expert, gentle, and loving care.

Services were held on Monday, June 21 at the Galena Funeral Home, in Galena, Md. Graveside services followed at the Chester Cemetery, Chestertown, Md.

Adrian B. Moulton

YORK - Adrian B. Moulton, husband of Carol Moulton died June 2, 2004 in York. Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, June 27 at the VFW Post 6977 in Cape Neddick. Memorial donations may be made to the VFW Post 6977, P.O. Box 201, York Beach, ME 03910. Arrangements by the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home.

Chester C. Pease Jr.

TOWNSEND, Mass. - Chester C. Pease Jr., 87, of 233 Main St., died Wednesday, June 16, 2004, at his residence after an illness.

Mr. Pease was born in Lowell, Mass., Aug. 12, 1916, son of Chester C. and Gertrude (Gray) Pease and has resided in Townsend for the past 10 years. Before moving to Townsend, he resided in Mirror Lake, N.H.

He is survived by two daughters, Bette A. McNabb of Townsend and Drakes Island, and Sherry J. Vaughan of Lunenburg and Drakes Island; eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Kilburn Pease and Philip Pease both of New Hampshire, and his former wives; Elizabeth (Bickford) Pease in 1993, and Jeanne (Fradd) Pease in 1990.

For 35 years, Mr. Pease worked as a civil engineer for Camp, Dresser, & McKee Inc., Boston, retiring in 1981. Before that, he had worked for the state of Maine Highway Department.

Mr. Pease was a graduate of the University of New Hampshire. He was a member of the Lodge of Masons and during World War II served his country as a captain in the Unites States Army.

Funeral services were held at Monday at the T.J. Anderson & Son Funeral Home, 250 Main St., (Route 119) Townsend Center. Burial was in Edson Cemetery, Lowell, Mass.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Townsend Congregational Church, PO Box 487, Townsend, MA 01469.

Virginia ‘Virge’ (Sumalpong) Dame

YORK - Virginia "Virge" (Sumalpong) Dame, 65, of 116 Woodbridge Road, died Thursday, June 24, 2004, at York Hospital. She was the wife of Frederick "Fred" Dame Sr.

Born in Ewa, Oahu, Hawaii, May 30, 1939, she was the daughter of the late Demetrio A. and Maria (Salas) Sumalpong and graduated from Waipahu High School in 1957. She was a stewardess for Inter Island Airlines and in more recent years worked as a waitress at the York Harbor Inn.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Fred W. Dame Jr. and Timothy S. Dame, both of York; two brothers, Alfredo Sumalpong of Honolulu and Stanley Sumalpong of California; one sister, Loretta S. Cruz of Las Vegas, Nev.; and one grandson, Devin James Jache. She was predeceased by two brothers, Robert and Phil.

A graveside service was held Tuesday at First Parish Cemetery. Calling hours were Monday from 2 to 5 p.m. at United Methodist Church of York and Ogunquit in York. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Salvation Army, 15 Middle St., Portsmouth, NH 03801. Arrangements were by Paul C. Rogers & Sons Family Funeral Homes, 2 Hillside Avenue, Amesbury.
