Paul D. Huckins

YORK - Paul D. Huckins, 79, formerly of Woodbridge Road and York Street died Saturday, June 26, 2004 at the Brentwood Rehabilitation and Nursing Home in Yarmouth.

He was born Oct. 31, 1924, in Boston, the son of Albert D. and Julia (O’Connor) Huckins.

Mr. Huckins was a laboratory engineer from 1943 until his retirement in 1968 for the Raytheon Company in the Boston area. He worked at Portsmouth Naval Ship Yard and built homes in the Kittery, York and Wells area from 1968 to 1989.

He was a communicant of St. Christopher’s Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus Star of the Sea Council. Mr. Huckins was the founder of St. Barnabas Ministry, which was established to visit the sick at the Harbor Home.

He was a member of the York Charter Commission for three years serving as vice chairman for two years. He was a member of the Budget Committee for two years and a member of York’s 350th Anniversary Commission until 2002. Mr. Huckins also served as an alternate member of the town Grievance Review Board for two years. He was a member of AARP and the York Senior Center.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 8 a.m. Saturday, July 10, in St. Christopher’s Church. Interment will be private.

Elizabeth E. Webster

YORK - Elizabeth E. "Liz" Webster of 2 Deacon Drive, wife of Walter E. Webster, III, died Monday, June 28, 2004, at York Hospital after a long illness.

Visiting hours will be Wednesday, June 30, 7 to 9 p.m. at the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road., York. Graveside services will be Thursday, July 1 at 10 a.m. in Laurel Hill Cemetery, 293 Beach St., Saco, Maine.

Mary M. Buxton

YORK - A memorial service for Mary M. Buxton of Nashua, N.H., will take place Thursday, July 8, at 3 p.m. at the First Parish Congregational Church in York.

Gregory M. Chartier II

YORK - Gregory M. Chartier II, the newborn son of Gregory R. Chartier Jr. and Ashley M. Hogan, died July 3, 2004. He was loved a lot by his family.

Survivors include his parents of York; grandparents James P. and Penny Hogan of York, Kelly and Michael Shea of East Rochester, N.H., Richard B. and Joanne S. Chartier of Laconia, N.H.; great-grandparents W. James and Gail Hogan of York and Judy and Leonard Spires of West Newfields, Maine.

Private services will be held. Arrangements by the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home.

Patience G. Choate

YORK HARBOR - Patience (Gidge) Choate, 95, a longtime resident of York Harbor, passed on to a new life on July 2, 2004, at her home.

She was born Aug. 14, 1908, in Watford, England, the daughter of Harry and Amy (Pegler) Gidge. She moved to New Brunswick at the age of 8 and later settled in the United States.

Formerly of Nashua, N.H., and Worcester, Mass., she worked as a bookkeeper at Economic Machinery Company. Pat was a member of St. George’s Episcopal Church and a volunteer at York Hospital for many years. She was an avid traveler throughout the United States, Canada and Europe with family and friends. Pat was a great cook, known for her savory salmon chowder, chicken lush, pecan and lemon meringue pies and snowballs.

She was the widow of Percy F. Choate. She was the last of her family, survived by nieces, Susan G. Hennessey and Pamela A. Hirsch. She will be greatly missed.

Graveside services will be held in the First Parish Cemetery, on York Street, in York on Saturday, July 10, at 11 a.m. Friends and relatives are welcome.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the York Volunteer Ambulance Association, York Hospital Home Care or the American Arthritis Association. Arrangements by the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home.

Raymond W. Earle

YORK - Raymond Wilson "Niffy" Earle, 91, of Meetinghouse Lane, died Friday, July 2, 2004, at York Hospital.

He was born Dec. 28, 1912, in York, the son of Raymond G. and Luella (Young) Earle.

Known as "Niffy" to the students of the York Grammar School, Raymond was the school custodian for 40 years and school bus driver for 50 years. He retired in 1974.

He also worked for Henry Ruch as a truck driver and construction worker.

To his family, Raymond was known as "Wilson," and with his wife, Harriet, he built a cottage on Bauneg Beg Lake. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, gardening, and solving crossword and jigsaw puzzles.

Raymond was a member of the Masons for more than 50 years.

He was predeceased by his wife, Harriet M. (Tuscan) Earle, of 67 years. Harriet died in February 2000. He was also predeceased by a son, Arlen, who died in 2003 and by three brothers and four sisters.

Raymond is survived by two sons, Richard N. Earle of Hollis and Robert W. Earle of Nashville, Tenn.; one daughter, Carolyn Reilly of York; 12 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, one great-great-granddaughter, and one great-great-grandson.

Graveside services were held Tuesday, July 6, in the First Parish Cemetery, York. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, New England Division, 1 Main St., Suite 300, Topsham, Maine 04086. Arrangements by Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, York.

Lilyan Farrington

WARNER, N.H. - Lilyan Farrington, 86, of Kearsage Mountain Road, died June 30, 2004, at the CRVNA Hospice House in Concord, N.H.

She was born in York, the daughter of the late John and Lillian (Nichols) Gifford. She lived in Wakefield, Mass. before moving to Warner, N.H.

Lilyan graduated from York High School and was also a graduate of beautician school. She worked as a hairdresser for many years and enjoyed knitting and crewel embroidery.

She is survived by her two daughters, Barbara Collins and her husband, Arthur, of Bow, N.H., and Sally Clute and her husband, Jan, of Mount Vernon, Iowa; four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Lilyan was predeceased by her husband, Emory Farrington, who died in 2000.

A memorial service was held Saturday, July 3, at Waters Funeral Home, 50 South Main St., Concord, N.H. The Rev. Harold Beliveau officiated.

Bethany A. Fritz

YORK - Bethany Anne Fritz, beloved daughter of Barry A. and Roxanne Leslie Fritz, began her journey to the spirit world at Maine Medical Center on June 28, 2004.

Bethany was born Feb. 13, 1987, in Sanford, Maine. A senior at York High School, she was planning on going to the University of Maine at Orono, in January to study art. She was an extremely loving, caring person who loved life, her friends, family and animals, especially her cats, Houdini and Onyx and her dog, Farleigh. She loved art, music, films, and jewelry. She was the best kind of friend to have: Kind, sincere, devoted and always made her friends and family her first priority.

She is survived by her parents, Roxanne and Barry Jr. of York; her sisters, Breanna of York, Stephanie Lachance of Portland, Sarah and husband, Jay Boucher, of Portsmouth; her grandmothers, Doris Fritz of Kittery and Stephanie Keswick of Belfast; great-grandmother, Addie Cobbett, of Sanford; uncle, Larry Leslie of Sanford; aunt, Lou Anne Jackson of Dover, N.H.; cousins, Tyler, Kristian, Sasha and Mikhail; and many, many close friends.

She was predeceased by her grandfathers, Edwin N. Leslie Jr., of North Berwick, and Barry A. Fritz Sr., of Kittery, and a cousin, Justin Leslie, of Sanford.

A celebration of Bethany’s life was held Friday, July 2, in First Parish Church of York. Visiting hours were Thursday, July 1, at Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Rd., York.

An art scholarship is being established in Bethany’s name; for those wishing to donate, please send donations to: Bethany Fritz Memorial Art Scholarship, c/o York High School, 1 Robert Stevens Drive, York, ME 03909.

William Henry Weare Sr.

CAPE NEDDICK - William Henry Weare Sr., 84, formerly of Pine Hill Road, died July 2, 2004, at Maine Veteran’s Home in Scarborough.

Born in New Bedford, Mass., on Feb. 6, 1920, he was a son of George D. and Helen Weare.

Raised on the family farm in Cape Neddick, he graduated from York High School in 1936 and Phillips Exeter Academy in 1938. Bill attended Harvard University for three years where he was an accomplished lightweight boxer and contributor to the Harvard Review Literary Magazine. He subsequently enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in England and France as a corporal in aviation ordinance. He was on a ship in Marseilles awaiting transit to Burma when the Japanese surrendered. Consequently, his ship became one of the earliest to return to Boston.

During his career as a salesman, he worked for H. A. Johnson, Burgess Fobes, and Martin-Seynour. He was well known to his customers all over New England as an entertaining storyteller.

He was also active in community affairs. At various points in his life he was a trustee of York Hospital, the York School District, and the Ogunquit Museum of American Art. He was also a member of the Ocean Masonic Lodge 142, in Wells.

Bill was predeceased by his wife, June, whom he married Oct. 6, 1943, in Ogunquit, and his younger brother, John.

Surviving are his five children, Michael Weare and his wife, Patricia, Stephen Weare, and David Weare, all of Cape Neddick; Betsey Jane Weare and her husband, Chet Goon of Cataumet, Mass.; and William Weare Jr. of Iowa City, Iowa.

Bill, the self-proclaimed "Handsomest man in York County," leaves seven grandchildren, John-Henry, Jessica, George, Maggie, Hana, Cassandra and Helena Weare.

Also surviving are his sister, Barbara H. Grover and his aunt, Gladys M. Shum, both of Cape Neddick.

A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 7, at the Ogunquit Baptist Church. Burial will follow at the First Parish cemetery in York. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: Ogunquit Museum of American Art, Box 815, Ogunquit, ME 03907-0815.

Arrangements are by Bibber Memorial Chapel, 111 Chapel Road, Wells.

Elizabeth E. Webster

YORK - Elizabeth E. Grinnell Webster, 60, of Deacon Drive, formerly of Biddeford Pool, died Monday, June 28, 2004, at York Hospital.

She was born in Hyde Park, Mass., the daughter of Paul and Pauline (Young) Moulton.

She moved to Biddeford Pool with her husband, Robert A. Grinnell Sr., in 1974. He died in 1992.

Mrs. Webster had worked as a caregiver to the elderly for many years and enjoyed working with and grooming horses, writing poetry, and making ceramics.

She married Walter E. Webster III, of York, eight years ago and resided in York.

Survivors include her husband, Walter of York; two sons, Robert A. Grinnell Jr. and his wife, Caroline, of Saco, and James P. Grinnell and his wife, Melanie, of Eliot; one daughter, Donna J. Hebert of Biddeford; two sisters, Monda O. Jerome, of Biddeford Pool, and Constance L. Nixon, of Florida; and six grandchildren and eight stepchildren.

A graveside service was held Thursday, July 1, in Laurel Hill Cemetery, in Saco, Maine.

Arrangements by the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home of York.

Joan Marie Wilson

ALFRED - Joan Marie Wilson, 72, of Keywood Manor Park in Alfred, died unexpectedly on July 1, 2004, at Maine Medical Center in Portland, surrounded by her family.

Born in Newton, Mass., on Nov. 5, 1931, she was the daughter of Margaret and the late Edward Wilson. She attended schools and was raised in Newton until she married. She and her husband moved to York Village for a time, but later returned to Massachusetts to make their home and raise a family in Franklin, where she leaves many good friends.

She resided in Alfred, where she shared her home with and cared for her 100-year-old mother, while enjoying the company of many wonderful friends.

She will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved her, including her loving family, her mother, Margaret Wilson, of Alfred; her daughters and their families, Donna and her husband, Tom Chase, of York, and Deborah Grinnell and her husband, Joe, of Monmouth; her three sons, Daniel and his wife Kathy Wilson, of Livermore Falls, Dennis Wilson, of Cape Neddick, and Dean Wilson, of Sanford; seven grandchildren, James Wilson, Sabrina and Peter Grinnell, Kelly Blue, Roger, TJ, and Melissa Chase; seven great-grandchildren, Joshua, Harly and Taylor Wilson, Alicia Blue, and Kiyla and Olivia Chase; a brother, Bill and his wife Rosemary Wilson, as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
