David F. Grant

YORK HARBOR - David F. Grant, of York Harbor, born July 27, 1928, died July 5, 2004, at York Hospital after a period of failing health.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Jeanine Fontaine Grant; two daughters, Judith and her husband, Raymond Beaudoin, of Rochester, N.H., and Rebecca and her husband, Michael Nevejans, of Rochester, N.H.; a son, David F. Grant Jr. and his wife, Jacqueline, of York; seven grandchildren, Sarah and Andrew Beaudoin, Benjamin, Eric, and Charles Nevejans, Nicole and Jeffrey Grant; and two great-grandchildren, Noah Gerrits Beaudoin and Abigail Nevejans. He was predeceased by a daughter, Bethany Jean Grant.

There will be no visiting hours and services will be private. Arrangements by the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, of York.

Thomas J. Kearney

MOODY - Thomas J. Kearney, 66, of 51 Cranberry Lane, died Friday, Aug. 6, 2004, in Somersworth, N.H., after a brief illness.

Born Oct. 8, 1937, in Portland, he was the son of James F. and Ida B. (Fontaine) Kearney and was raised in Connecticut. He was devoted to the nursing profession to which he had dedicated more than 40 years of his life. At one time, he had served as director of nursing for Elliot Hospital, in Manchester, N.H.

Family members include his beloved brother, James F. Kearney and his wife, Gayle, of Meriden, Conn., and several nephews, nieces and cousins in Connecticut. Both his parents predeceased him.

Services for Tom Kearney will be private and at the convenience of the family. The Bernier Funeral Home, at 49 South St., Somersworth, N.H. has been entrusted with final arrangements.

Norma O. Coite

SOUTH BERWICK - Norma O. Coite, 91, of Berwick Estates, South Berwick, died Friday. Aug. 6, 2004, at York Hospital. She joined Bill, her loving husband of 59 years, and they will now forever be together.

She was the daughter of Edward and Olivi (King) Hall, of East Boston, Mass., where she grew up in a loving family with five sisters and one brother whom she loved dearly.

She met and married the love of her life, William Coite, and moved to Fullerton, Calif. for five years during World War II. They had two sons together, William, Jr. and Edward. After the war she and her family moved to Maine and lived the rest of their lives in Kittery, York and Wells.

They made many friends throughout the country, she always enjoyed keeping in touch with.

She enjoyed her days as an elocution teacher in York, getting to know the local children. She and Bill spent many days driving the scenic roads of New Hampshire. Sights such as the Old Man of the Mountain and Franconia Notch were among her favorites.

She spent her last few years at Berwick Estates, in South Berwick, where she made many new friends whom she treasured dearly. Her most beloved joy the past few years have been her family visits. When she saw a family member, her face took on a glow with the most beautiful smile ever.

She is survived by her two sons, Bill, Jr. and Ed; two loving daughters-in-law Mary and Joanne; four grandchildren, Lori Babb of Waterboro, Chris Walker, of Cave Creek, Ariz., Melissa Moulton and her husband, Dale, of Cape Neddick, and Ryan Coite and his wife, Shelley, of Cape Neddick. She was very proud of her great-grandchildren Corey and Nicholle Babb, of Waterboro, and Braiden Moulton, of Cape Neddick. She is also survived by her brother, Edward Hall of Woburn, Mass.

She will be deeply missed by her family who find comfort in knowing she is at peace in a joyful place with those who were dear to her.

The family will celebrate her life in a private memorial service. If you knew her we ask that you remember her with a smile. Arrangements by the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, Kittery.

James Edward Sponsler Jr.

KITTERY POINT - James Edward Sponsler Jr., 37, of Bartlett Road, in Kittery Point, died unexpectedly on Sunday Aug. 1, 2004, in Burlington, Vt.

Born Aug. 14, 1966, in Portsmouth, N.H., he was the son of Janet M. (Brooks) Sahli and James E. Sponsler Sr.

He attended local schools and graduated from R.W. Traip Academy with the Class of 1985. He was employed for many years as the manager of Big A auto parts store, first in York Village and later in Sanford. Most recently he was employed as a mechanic for Ramsdell Sand and Gravel, in York.

An avid outdoor enthusiast, Jimmy enjoyed hunting, fishing, and racing his jeep. His first love, however, was spending time with his daughter - those times spent together will always be cherished.

He is survived by his loving family: his wife, Holly (Nealley) Sponsler; their daughter, Jamie Sponsler; stepdaughter, Julie Covel; mother, Janet and her husband Bob Sahli, all of Kittery Point; father, James E. Sponsler Sr., of Orlando, Fla.; grandparents, Nancy and the late Robert Brooks ,of Kittery Point and Hollis, and Barbara Tapley, of Kittery; sisters, Julie and her husband, Bill Baer, of Portsmouth, N.H.; Gina and her husband, Jeff Cullen, of New Castle, N.H.; Angela Sponsler, of Orlando, Fla.; brothers, Christopher Sponsler, of Augusta; and Nathan Sponsler, of Orlando, Fla.; uncles, Vaughn Brooks, of Gonic, N.H.; Russell Sponsler, of South Portland; Warren Sponsler, of Tampa, Fla.; and Brian Tapley, of Cape Neddick; aunts, Cindy Fielders, of Eliot; and Brenda Tapley, of Newmarket, N.H. He also had many special nieces and nephews and several loving family members in Minnesota, and his loving dog Nitro.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Aug. 6, at Kittery Point Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Jimmy Sponsler Memorial Fund, c/o Holly Sponsler, 76 Bartlett Road, Kittery Point, Maine 03905. Arrangements by the J.S Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

James H. Webster

CAPE NEDDICK - James Houghton Webster, 72, died Thursday, Aug. 5, 2004, at York Hospital.

Born in Hallowell on June 14, 1932, he was the son of Clifton B. and Marie O. (Lerette) Webster. He attended Hallowell schools and graduated in 1950.

James joined the U.S. Army and served two years in Germany during the Korean conflict. He was in the Military Police Corps and attained the rank of corporal.

After his military service, he attended the University of Maine and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1959. He received his master’s in economics from Clark University in 1960 and completed graduate studies in finance at Northwestern University in 1967.

From 1960 to 1965 he was an assistant treasurer at Guaranty Bank and Trust Company in Worcester, Mass., and from 1969 to 1973 he was assistant professor of finance at the University of Maine at Orono, where he received the Nicholas Salgo award for teaching excellence in 1970-’71. In 1973 he joined Merchants National Bank in Bangor as the vice president and remained in banking until 1992.

He was active in a wide range of civic, professional and cultural organizations, including the United Way of Bangor and was treasurer of the University of Maine Alumni Association for 10 years. Most recently, he was a civic member of the Greater Yorks Chamber of Commerce.

He leaves his wife of 42 years, Faith Hutchins Webster; his daughter, Heidi Webster Cushman, of Pownal; his son, Andrew Hutchins Webster, of Bangor; and four grandchildren. He is survived by three sisters, Julia Keenan, of Farmingdale; Cynthia McPherson, Nancy Coan, and a half-brother, Richard Webster, all of Hallowell.

A memorial service was held Tuesday, Aug. 10, at 11 a.m., in First Parish Congregational Church, at 180 York St. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the York Volunteer Ambulance Association, P.O. Box 238, York 03909. Arrangements by the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, York.

Claire M. Croft

ALFRED - Claire M. Croft, 92, of 44 Cranberry Meadow Drive, in Alfred, and formerly of 301 Main Street, Somersworth, N.H., died Thursday, Aug. 12, 2004, at H.D. Goodall Hospital in Sanford after a long illness.

Born on April 25, 1912, she was the daughter of Amedee and Delia (Dusseault) Leclerc. She was raised in Somersworth, N.H., and graduated from St. Martin Academy.

She was a resident of Somersworth, N.H. for most of her life and moved to Alfred in 1999. Beore her retirement, she was employed with Tiara Shoe Company, of Dover, N.H. While in Somersworth, she was a communicant of St. Martin Catholic Church where she was a former member of the Ladies Guild. She was also a former member of the Golden Age Club.

Family members include two sons and a daughter, Richard Croft and his wife Carolyn, of Brookfield, N.H., Roger Croft and his wife Sharon, of Rochester, N.H., and Joanne Croft, of Alfred; a brother, Roger Leclerc, of Somersworth, N.H.; a sister, Mrs. Robert (Jeannette) English, of Lakeland, Fla.; three grandchildren, Laura Eldridge, Michelle Mangiafico and Michael Croft; four great-grandchildren, Joshua Eldridge, Michaela Eldridge, Vanessa Mangiafico and Brady Michael Croft.

She was predeceased by a sister, Germaine Rawski, who died this year and by her husband, Edward Croft, who died in 1980.

There are no calling hours. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Monday at 10 a.m. in St. Martin Church on W. High and Maple Street in Somersworth N.H. with the Rev. Aaron Pfaff, pastor, as celebrant. Burial will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Somersworth, N.H. Memorial contributions may be made in her name to: Beacon Charitable Corporation c/o Joanne Croft, 44 Cranberry Meadow Drive, Alfred, Maine, 04002, or to Maine Alzheimer’s Association, 163 Lancaster St., Portland, Maine 04101.

Edward P. Hanway

YORK - Edward P. Hanway, 63, of York, died Monday, April 16, 2004.

He was born on Feb. 8, 1941, in Brighton, Mass., the son of William and Mary Hanway. He attended local schools and went on to graduate from Northeastern University in Boston, Mass. He served in the United States Air Force and followed with a career in the United States Postal Service. He was a very active member and past president of the York Lions Club. He enjoyed ballroom dancing, candlepin bowling and ice skating.

He is survived by two sisters and a brother, Lyn Leisentritt, of Cape Neddick, Barbara Hanway, of Brighton, Mass., and Bill Hanway, of North Scituate, R.I. He will also be missed by two nephews, a niece, a greatniece and a greatnephew.

Robert Roux

DOVER, N.H. - Robert Harry Roux, 75, formerly of Dover Point, retiring in Tequesta, Fla., and York Harbor, died Sunday, Aug. 8, 2004, at Massachusetts General Hospital, in Boston, after a brief period of failing health.

He was born May 10, 1929, in Dover, N.H., the son of Raymond and Margaret (Robinson) Roux. He was a graduate of Dover High School, class of 1947, spending his summers at his family camp in Alton Bay, N.H. and served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War.

In his earlier years, he worked in the family business, Robinson Bottling Company, of Dover. He was known throughout the Seacoast area as a senior insurance agent for Allstate Insurance for more than 35 years, retiring in May of 2000. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, lobstering and enjoying a good game of golf, and was a past member of the Cocheco Country Club in Dover.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Dorothy A. (Wooldridge) Roux; a daughter, Sue Ellen (Roux) Reeves, of Dover; two sons, Robert J.P. Roux and his wife, Karen (Blinn), of Wells, and Jonathan R. Roux and his companion, Lisa, of York Harbor; five grandchildren, Tiffany, Alanna and Jesse Reeves, of Dover, Katherine Daniel (KD) Roux, of Plymouth, and Ian Roux, of Wells; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Joanne (Wooldridge) and Paul Lepage; several nieces and nephews, including, Mike, Shelley, Marty and Nancy Towle.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Cancer Research Center, c/o Wentworth-Douglass Hospital, 789 Central Ave., Dover, N.H. 03820.

Mary Prange Conrad

YORK - Mary Prange Conrad, 99, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Aug. 25, 2004 in her home in York.

She was born in Sheboygan, Wis., on Sept. 18, 1904, the youngest of six children born to Henry Carl Prange and Augusta Bodenstein Prange.

Her husband, Rupert Conrad preceded her in death in 1979. A baby daughter, Jane Conrad; a brother, H. Carl Prange; sisters, Louise Prange, Wilma Prange, Norma Prange Gunther, Helen Prange Chesebro; and a nephew, William Gunther, also preceded her in death.

She is survived by her daughter, Riki Conrad Gibney of York; her son, Edwin (Connie) Conrad of Winter Springs, Fla.; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, Lisa (Matt) McColley and daughters, Mary, Anna and Katie of South Berwick; Laura (Darryl), and Caleb and Caitlin Peary of Corinth, Maine; Edward Conrad of Pompano Beach, Fla.; Robert (Nadine), Mitchell and Audrey Conrad of Springfield, Pa. Also surviving Mary are nieces and nephews, Robert (Katie) Chesebro of Sheboygan, Wis.; Dr. James (Christine) Chesebro of Jacksonville, Fla.; John (Jess) Gunther of Elkhart Lake, Wis.; Ruth (Robert) Masse of Appleton, Wis.; Laura (Dr. Edward) Krawitt of Sherbourne, Vt.; and Henry C. (Laura) Prange of Naples, Fla.

She attended Sweet Briar College and was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority. She graduated from the University of Wisconsin and Parsons School of Design in New York. She was a resident of Westport, Conn., for 53 years. She loved entertaining, art, traveling, gardening and Compo Beach.

She was a devoted Christian, and the Lord was very real and evident in her life. She was an active member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Westport, Conn., and in her later years, she was very active at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Darien, Conn. Mary expressed an outgoing, generous spirit of hospitality to everyone. Mary lived a long and fulfilling life.

She will be greatly missed and remembered by all those who knew and loved her. A memorial service will be held at a date yet to be determined. Robert L. Rainville Sr.

CAPE NEDDICK - Robert L. Rainville Sr. 60, of Cape Neddick, died Tuesday, Aug. 24, 2004 at his home.

He was born in Rochester, N.H. on June 27, 1944, the son of Paul and Leona (Marceau) Rainville. He was a graduate of Somersworth High School.

Robert was a house builder for many years before becoming a fisherman. He owned and operated the F/V "Flying Frenchman" and the B&B Trap Co. with his wife Bonnie.

He was predeceased by his sons, Robert III and Glenn; daughter, Susan; his father, Paul; and brother, Donald.

Robert is survived by his wife, Bonnie (Perkins) Rainville, of Cape Neddick; his mother, Leona Rainville; five sons, Michael Rainville, Charles Rainville, Jeffrey Rainville, Robert Rainville Jr., and Kevin Rainville; one daughter, Robin Rainville; four brothers, Leo Rainville, Rene Rainville, David Rainville, and Phillip Rainville; one sister, Pauline Landry; and one grandchild, Jeffrey Rainville, Jr.

Memorial services were held Saturday, Aug. 28 at the Fisherman’s Memorial, in York Harbor. Following the service, a time of sharing was held at the V.F.W. Visiting hours were held Thursday, at the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home. Interment was private.

Marion F. Ramsay

YORK HARBOR - Marion F. Ramsay died Monday, Aug. 23, 2004 at her home in York Harbor, surrounded by her family.

She was born in Portland on Oct. 14, 1914, the youngest daughter of Harold Edward and Bertha Bond Farrington. A graduate of Deering High School, she also attended the University of Maine in Portland. She married Donald A. Ramsay on Sept. 9, 1941 and together they raised their three children in Portland. Donald pre-deceased her in 1984.

She was a lifelong community leader, volunteer and willing contributor to her communities both in Portland and York Harbor. She was an active president of the Parents Club at Heseltine School, a Campfire and Cub Scout den leader, treasurer of Portland’s Unitarian Universalist Church, and president of the Board of the Seventy-Five State Street Retirement Community. She also served in a variety of capacities at the Women’s Literary Union. Recently, she volunteered at the Old York Historical Society’s Museum Shop and as a Reading Buddy for the first-grade students at the Village Elementary School in York.

She became an antiques dealer while in Portland, and took great pleasure in exhibiting at antiques shows around the state. She was sought out by dealers and buyers alike for her unique collections and her expertise in appraising antiques.

She was loved not only by her devoted family, but also by the many friends she made and kept over her 90-year life-span. She took great joy in participating with her friends in a variety of excursions, events, lectures, and outings, as well as hosting bridge and dinner parties. When she fell ill, she was planning a line-dancing class for residents of her retirement community in York Harbor.

She is survived by her sister, Elizabeth F. Towle of Framingham, Mass.; her brother, Harold Farrington Jr. of Scarborough; her daughter and son-in-law, Ann Ramsay-Jenkins and William M. Jenkins; her daughter and son-in-law, Susan R. Knaysi and George A. Knaysi; and her son and daughter-in-law, Scott W. Ramsay and Gretchen L. Ramsay. She doted upon her grandchildren, Alison H. Heath, Melissa K. Keller, Ashley A. Knaysi, Jeffrey S. Ramsay and Adam W. Cornell, as well as six great-grandchildren.

Visiting hours were held from 4 to 7 .m. on Monday, Aug. 30. A memorial service celebrating her life was held at the Allen Avenue Unitarian Universalist Church, in Portland at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 31. A reception at the church followed. Arrangements made by Lucas-Eaton Funeral Home, in York. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Endowment Fund at either the Old York Historical Society, 207 York Street, York, Maine 03909, or the Maine Audubon Society, 20 Gilsland Farm Road, Falmouth, Maine 04105.
