Doris Theresa Zirpolo

Doris Theresa Zirpolo, 82, of Cody, Wyo. died Thursday, Aug. 19, 2004, at Deaconess Hospital in Billings.

She was born June 23, 1922, in Newton, Mass., the daughter of Paul W. and Mary Angeline Fontaine Wing. She was raised in New England.

She married Joseph Zirpolo in Nashua, N.H., on May 25, 1973. She was a Cody resident for the past six years.

Mrs. Zirpolo loved to dance. She enjoyed decorating her home and working in her yard. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family.

Survivors include son, Skip (Shelley) Holmes of Cody; daughters, Carol (Ron) Dube of Cody and Patricia (Ben) Chandler of Cape Neddick; brother, Paul Wing of Massachusetts; sisters, Rita Dale and Arlene Karibean of Florida and Marsha Bourgeois of Massachusetts; eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

Private family services will be in Cody and Maine. Cremation has taken place.

Barbara May Amee

OGUNQUIT - Barbara May Amee, 80, of Dana Road, Ogunquit, and Venice, Fla., died Monday, July 19, 2004, at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

She was born May 30, 1924, in York, the daughter of Arthur A. and Alice S. (Clough) Boston. She graduated from Wells High School and McIntosh College.

She worked in the supply department at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for 30 years, retiring in the early 1970s.

She was a member of the Ogunquit Baptist Church. For the last 30 years, she summered in Ogunquit then drove to Florida for the winter. One of her hobbies was collecting seashells.

She was predeceased by her husband, Leon F. Amee, who died in 1990.

Family members include her son, Stephen Amee, of Ogunquit; two sisters, Virginia Blaisdell of York, and Kathryn Rowe of Ogunquit; sister in law Mabel Sargent of Portsmouth, N.H.; one niece; two nephews; and two cousins.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, July 23, in the First Parish Cemetery, York.

Memorial donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice. Arrangements by Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, York.

Frederick H.Guterman

NEW YORK - Frederick Herbert Guterman, born May 5, 1921, died at age 83 on June 28, 2004, in New York City after a long struggle with Parkinson’s disease.

He had a special characteristic about him that engaged both friends and strangers with keen insight and crass humor. born in Cambridge, Mass., a single child, he grew up in Newton, N.H. He summered in Ogunquit, Maine, with his folks at his beloved "Meadowmere."

He enjoyed sailing out of Perkins Cove to Cape Porpoise and around the area in his dory with his dog, Sandie. He graduated from Cornell University in 1942 with a bachelor’s degree in science and a degree in administrative engineering, which cast his future career.

He was a member of Tau Beta Pi, Quill and Dagger, and Kappa Beta Phi. He joined the U.S. Army Air Corps as an armaments and ordinance officer with XIX TAC, 9th Airforce - the principal air support for Patton’s 3rd Army. He retired in 1946 as a major.

He was president of the Industrial Products Division of the International Telephone and Telegraph Corporation.

Before ITT, he was vice president and general manager of industrial and military equipment operations of Allen. B. Dumont Laboratories Inc. He also served as vice president of sales for Arma, a division of American Bosch Arma Corporation. He later became president in 1973 of Horn and Hardart restaurants in New York City and Philadelphia, as well as the Hanover House mail order company.

Among many interests were his involvement in The Cape Neddick Country Club in York; The Breakers Golf Club in Palm Beach, Fla.; Tennis Port in Queens, N.Y.; The Wings Club in New York; and the Cornell Club in New York.

Preceded in death by his mother, Ruth "Chickie" Guterman, and father Herbert C. Guterman, he is survived by his son, James Ludewig Guterman of New York City.

Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Karen (Feeney) Kondos

YORK BEACH - Karen (Feeney) Kondos died unexpectedly Thursday, July 15, 2004, at York Hospital, following a brief illness.

She was born in 1942 in Lowell, Mass., the daughter of the late Michael and Mildred Feeney. She was a graduate of Lowell High School and Lowell Commercial College.

She resided in Lowell, Mass.; Woodbridge, Va.; Silver Spring, Md.; Westford, Mass., and York Beach, Maine.

She was a Lowell High Girl Officer and was a member of several local theater groups. She enjoyed dancing, singing, acting, and her family and friends.

She is survived by her husband of 41 years, George Kondos of York Beach; her daughter and son-in-law, Angela (Kondos) Ingalls and Joseph Ingalls of Westford, Mass.; her son and daughter-in-law, Christopher and Paula (McGowan) Kondos of York; four grandchildren, Zachary and Alyssa Ingalls of Westford, and Lily and Ruby Kondos of York; two sisters, Greta (Feeney) Villareale of Warrenton, Va., and Janice Feeney of Nyack, N.Y.

Funeral services were held July 19 in the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York. Interment was in First Parish Cemetery, York.

Helen Fermanis

ROLLINSFORD, N.H. - Helen Margaret Fermanis, 87, formerly of 48 Rollins Road, died Saturday, Aug. 21, 2004, at the Varney Crossing Living Center, in North Berwick.

She was born Oct. 3, 1916, in Cambridge, Mass., the daughter of Nicholas T. and Margaret (Sgouros) Mitropoulos of Greece.

She worked for Miller Shoe Co. for 19 years and retired in 1981. She was a member of the Greek Orthodox Church of Annunciation for more than 45 years. She was a past president of the Daughters of Penelope, a Sunday school teacher for the Greek Orthodox Church, a past president of the Greek Ladies Society, a member of the Dover Senior Center, a volunteer for Wentworth-Douglass Hospital and a resident of Rollinsford since 1948.

She is survived by her two sons, Steven Fermanis of Gorham and Nicholas Fermanis of Somersworth, N.H.; one daughter, Georgianna, "GiGi" (Fermanis) Roberts Maher of Wells; one brother, John Mitropoulos of Reading, Mass.; a sister, Sophia Mitropoulos of Reading, Mass.; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her husband, Arthur S. Fermanis, in 1992, and three brothers, Charlie, Ted and Christopher Mitropoulos.

Visitation for family and friends will be from 5 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 25, at Wiggin-Purdy-McCooey-Dion Funeral Home, 655 Central Ave., Dover, N.H. During the visitation hours, a Trisagion Memorial Service will be held at 7 p.m.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Aug. 26, at the Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation, on Locust St, Dover, N.H., with the Rev. Constantine Newman, officiating. Burial will follow at the Greek Orthodox cemetery on Dover Point Road, Dover.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Greek Orthodox Church, Locust St., Dover, NH 03820, or to American Heart Association, Gift Department., P.O. Box 3049, Syracuse, N.Y. 13220.

Lois Thomson

YORK BEACH - Lois Thomson, 70, of York Beach died Thursday, Aug. 19, at her home.

She was born on Jan. 2, 1934, the daughter of Maxwell Sargent and Helen (Otis) Thomson. She graduated from Methuen High School in 1953. She studied music with a professor from the New England conservatory.

She and her family moved to York Beach in 1956, and for 40 years, she owned and operated the Sugar Plum Shop. The store featured Nana’s Fudge, which was a division of her father and mother’s store, the Whispering Sands Gift Shop. She was active in all types of musical organizations in the southern Maine area.

She was a member of the First Parish Congregational Church Choir for more than 40 years, a member of the Old York Garden Club, the Daughters of the American Revolution and the International Women’s Club of New England.

She loved people and her beautiful voice portrayed her upbeat personality and love of life. One of her favorite musical roles was playing Mother Abbess in "The Sound of Music." "Climb Every Mountain" was her favorite song and perhaps the story of her life.

She is survived by her beloved sister, Priscilla A. Thomson; her brother, Bill Thomson; her sister-in-law, Jacqueline Thomson; four nieces and nephews, Kathie T. Mahoney and her husband, Michael, William M. Thomson and his wife, Jane, Cindy Thomson, and Jeffrey R. Thomson and his wife, Ann; eight grandnieces and nephews, Timothy Mahoney, Brendan Mahoney, Andrew Thomson, Matthew Thomson, Jackie Allen, J.J. Allen, and Megan and Emma Thomson.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Aug. 21, in First Parish Congregational Church, York. Interment followed in the First Parish Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Parish Church Music Fund, 180 York Street, York, ME 03909. Arrangements are by the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, York.

Dorothy H. Adams

YORK - Dorothy Hutchins Adams, 102, of Leesburg, Fla., died Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2004, at the Leesburg Regional Medical Center in Leesburg, Fla.

She was born on Aug. 4, 1902, the daughter of Frank and Shirley Emma (Thompson) Hutchins in South Berwick. She graduated from York High School.

She was a seamstress and loved to entertain people. She was a member of the Maine and Florida Extension Services. She served as clothing leader, and in both places she taught sewing and tailoring. For many years, she was the hostess at Bessy’s Restaurant in Ogunquit. She was a member of the United Methodist Women’s Society in Ogunquit and for 30 years she was a member of the Grace Memorial Methodist Church in Venice, Fla., where she lived for many years.

Her hobbies included crafts, sewing, tatting and crocheting. She was in the craft groups at every church she attended, exhibiting hundreds of items into her local craft fairs.

She is survived by her son, Lyle and his wife, Irene Adams; one grandson, Terry Adams of York; two great-grandchildren, Catherine Adams of Cape Elizabeth and Benjamin Adams and his wife, Elizabeth of London, England; one great-great-grandchild, Sophie Adams of London, England; one sister, M. Kaye Kunkel and her husband, William of Kittery; her brother-in-law, Donald Wotton of Alton Bay, N.H.; and her sister-in-law,Thelma Hutchins of Eliot.

She was predeceased by her husband of 68 years, Oren Adams; her five brothers and three sisters.

Visitation and funeral services were held on Monday, Sept. 13 at Wiggin-Purdy-McCooey-Dion Funeral Home, 655 Central Ave, Dover, N.H. with Rev. Patricia Bristow-Carrico, of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Kittery, Maine, officiating.

Laurette Blanche Bryant

YORK - Laurette Blanche Bryant, 73, of Long Sands Road and long time resident of Eliot, died Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2004 at Portsmouth Regional Hospital after a long illness from cancer.

She was born Dec. 2, 1930 in Lebanon, N.H., the second daughter of Joseph G. and Delima M. (Boivin) Hardy and attended local schools.

Mrs. Bryant moved to the Seacoast area in the late 1940s. Except for living a few years in Virginia and Florida, she lived in Eliot for most of those years. She moved to York two years ago where she made wonderful friends at Village Woods. Together, with her new friends, she enjoyed attending community social events and doing activities such as putting puzzles together.

She loved doing yard work at her home in Eliot and when finished, enjoyed watching the birds come to the feeders in her yard. She had a special fondness for all types of birds and animals. Mrs. Bryant enjoyed crocheting and made afghans for members of her family.

Mrs. Bryant was predeceased by her sister, Lillian Hardy, who died in 1937, at the age of five months. She is survived by two sisters, Lucille and her husband George Vance of Swanton, Vt., and Lorraine Marcotte of White River Junction, Vt.; multiple nieces and nephews and their families.

A celebration of her life will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 18 at the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York. Following the services, a time for sharing memories will be held in the Community Center, Village Woods, 117 Long Sands Road. Interment will be in Sacred Heart cemetery in Lebanon, N.H. at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Seacoast Hospice, 642 Central Ave., Dover, N.H. 03820.

Bruce A. Neal

YORK - Bruce A. Neal died Thursday, Sept. 9, 2004, at Maine Medical Center surrounded by his family.

Bruce was born on June 25, 1945, in Haverhill, Mass. He was raised in York Beach and attended York schools. He served his country in the U.S. Army Paratroopers from 1962 to 1965. He had been employed at C.E. Avery, York Hospital and the York School Department. He has been a member of the American Legion. Bruce enjoyed fishing, camping and the outdoors. He was also an independent contract painter.

He was predeceased by his father, Norman Neal, and his brother, Dwight E. Neal, in 2001. He is survived by his daughter, Heather Szumita and husband John of Biddeford; his mother, Sylvia Hathorne of York Beach; a brother, Stuart W. Neal and wife Judy of Kittery; a sister, Patricia A. Horning and husband James of Kittery; a sister-in-law, Lucille Neal of Englewood, Fla.; a granddaughter, Danielle Szumita of Biddeford; and a close friend and companion, Susan Neal of Wells. Bruce also leaves several aunts, uncles, nieces and many cousins.

In lieu of flowers to help incurred expenses, donations may be made to the Bruce A. Neal Trust Fund at the York County Federal Credit Union, 1 York Street, York, Maine 03909 or the American Red Cross.

A memorial service for family and friends will be held at Union Congregational Church on Church Street in York Beach on Tuesday, Sept. 21 at 11 a.m.

Betty H. Salfeety

CAPE NEDDICK - Betty H. Salfeety, 83, died Wednedsay, Sept. 8, 2004 in Cape Neddick after a short encounter with an aggressive cancer.

She was born in Seattle, Wash. on Aug. 17, 1921 the daughter of Gerald H. and Clara (Smythe) Hall.

She married Robert Dobbin in 1945 and was preceded in death by her only daughter, Diane.

In 1998 she married Fred G. Salfeety and moved to Cape Neddick.

Betty worked as a medical office manager until her retirement and was active in Pilgrim Congregational Church in Nashua, N.H. An avid gardener, quilter, and photographer, she volunteered her time to help others in the York community. She was active in the Ogunquit Women’s Club and volunteered at York Hospital. She was also a member of the Nubble Lighthouse Square Dance Club and the Old York Garden Club. She was very concerned with peace, justice and a sustainable world.

She is survived by her husband, Fred G, Salfeety; her brother, Joe Guse; granddaughters, Jennifer Elkin and Cathleen Hingston; step-children, Steve Salfeety, Susan Curley, Eric Salfeety, and Corinne Salfeety-Boxer; her two great-granddaughters, Ashley and Megan Elkin; and eight step-grandchildren and many dear friends and extended family members. They will miss her wit and honest humor.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 2 at the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Rd., York. In lieu of flowers, please contribute to either the Environmental Defense Fund, P.O. Box 5055, Hagerstown, Md. 21791 or to the Ogunquit Museum of American Art, P.O. Box 815, Ogunquit, Maine 03907-0815.
