Willard A. "Red" Crockett

HARMONY - Willard A. "Red" Crockett, 74, died Sunday, Sept. 12, 2004, in Brunswick, Ga., after a short illness.

Born in 1930 in Digby County, Nova Scotia, Canada, he immigrated to Waltham, Mass., during the early 1950s and worked for P.E. Burke Movers as a driver traveling the United States for many years.

He drove big rigs for other companies with a few years as a grade operator for the state of Maine. He also worked for Earl Ramsdell doing work for the town of York.

Red retired some years ago to Harmony, Maine, and last year moved to Nahunta, Ga.

He was predeceased by his father, Bill Crockett, Sr.

He leaves his beloved mother, Vesta Crockett of York; his children, Bill Crockett and his wife, Val, of Thomasburg, Ontario; Laura Crockett of Hillsboro, Ore.; David Crockett and his wife, Wrynn, of Blue Ridge, Ga.; Robert Crockett and his wife, Kimberly, of Nashua, N.H.; Linda and Sharon Crockett; a step-daughter, Linda Pratt and her husband, Chuck, of Eliot; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; sisters, Joan Weeks of Melbourne, Fla., and Elizabeth Knapp of York.

Family and friends are invited to attend graveside services at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 30 in the First Parish Cemetery, York. Arrangements by Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, York.

Marilyn E. McGee

YORK - Marilyn E. McGee, 70, of 24 Bluestone Lane, died Sunday, Sept. 26, 2004, surrounded by her family at York Hospital.

She was born in Sanford on Feb. 12, 1934, the daughter of Pasquale and Rose (Carideo) Coggio. She grew up in West Roxbury, Mass., and was a graduate of Roslindale High School with the Class of 1952. In 1954, she married the love of her life, Edward J. McGee. Together they raised their family in Westwood, Mass., and moved to York in 1980. Ed died in 1993.

Marilyn was employed for 20 years at Bickford’s Restaurant in Newington before retiring. She was a communicant of St. Christopher’s Church in York. She was very family oriented and enjoyed spending time with her family. She was also fond of the theater, and attended many plays at local venues.

Survivors include her four children, Karen Whitney and husband, Tom, of Lisbon Falls, Ken McGee and wife, Debi, of Florida, Janet Mitchell and husband, Michael, of Portsmouth, N.H., and Gary McGee and wife, Sheila, of Penacook, N.H.; nine grandchildren; brother, Patrick Coggio and wife Theresa of West Roxbury, Mass.; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a sister Josephine Palladino in 1968.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Christopher’s Church on Friday, Oct. 1 at 9:30 a.m. Visiting hours at the Farrell Funeral Home on 684 State St. in Portsmouth will be Thursday, Sept. 30 from 4 to 7 p.m. Her burial will be in Calvary cemetery in Portsmouth. In lieu of flowers, donations in her name may be made to York Hospital attention: Friend Raising for Skilled Nursing, 15 Hospital Dr., York, Maine 03909.

Joseph G. Shakra

CAPE NEDDICK - Joseph G. Shakra, 69, of 31 River Road, Cape Neddick, died unexpectedly on Sunday, Sept. 26, 2004, at his home.

He was born Nov. 26, 1934 in Manchester, N.H. the son of George and Zakey (Leteuf) Shakra.

Joe had been involved with flower sales and design for 40 years and owned and operated Flowers by Joseph Shakra on Albany Street in Boston for many years. He had also operated Joseph Shakra Interior Design and operated several cafes and restaurants in Boston and Provincetown including operating and managing the Provincetown Inn in Provincetown, Mass.

Joe was known as the ultimate cook and host. He especially enjoyed opening his home to entertaining his many friends and business associates. Joe also was an avid gardener and landscape designer and grew many of his own herbs, vegetables and flowers in his vast gardens.

Survivors include his longtime partner, Douglas J. Taylor of Cape Neddick; one daughter, Pamela O’Donnell of Nashua, N.H.; his former wife, Dorothea Theodore of Manchester, N.H.; one sister, Florence Lane of Manchester, N.H.; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 30 at the Cape Neddick Baptist Church in Cape Neddick. Visiting hours will be Wednesday. Sept. 29 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home at 91 Long Sands Rd., York. Donations may be made in Joe’s memory to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tenn., 38105 or Stjude.org.

Ruthmarie Viens

YORK - Ruthmarie Viens, 47, of 6 Norwood Farms Road, died Friday, Sept. 24, 2004, at York Hospital.

She was born in Arlington, Mass., Nov. 23, 1956, the daughter of Leonard F. and Eleanore F. (Donovan) Viens, Sr.

Miss Viens graduated from Matignan High School in Cambridge, Mass.

She summered in the area for many years before moving to York and Ogunquit 12 years ago. For the past eight years she has been a resident of the Harbor Home in York Harbor. She was an animal lover who especially liked cats and dogs.

Miss Viens was predeceased by her parents and a sister who died in infancy.

She is survived by her brother, Leonard F. Viens, Jr. of Shirley, Mass., and by a niece and nephew.

Graveside services will be held in St. Paul’s Cemetery, Arlington, Mass., at a later date. Arrangements by Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, York.

Michael R. Roy

LIVERMORE - Michae* Mike" Roy, 57, a resident of River Road in Livermore, died Monday, Sept. 13, 2004, at his home with his wife and sons by his side following a long battle with prostate cancer.

He was born Nov. 22, 1946, in Lewiston, the son of Roland and Anita Ouellette Roy. He was a 1964 graduate of Edward Little High School and served in the U.S. Navy as a sonar technician from 1965 to 1968. On Nov. 17, 1990, he married Carol Morse in Auburn. He worked for Verizon as an equipment installer for 31 years, retiring in December 2001. He will be remembered for his love of family, his unique sense of humor and contagious laugh.

He enjoyed spending time off-road jeeping, working around the house and listening to music. His main goal in life was making people laugh. He is survived by his wife, Carol of Livermore; his mother, Anita Roy Van Oosten and her husband, Peter, of Greene; two sons, Thomas (Tom) and his wife, Tracey, of Kennebunk, and Andrew (Andy) of Lewiston; four brothers, Paul and Pat Roy of Greene, David and Annette Roy of Greene, Steven and Kelly Roy of Arundel and James Roy of Greene; three grandchildren, Jordan, Hailey and Colby who lovingly refer to him as "Grumpy." He was predeceased by his father, Roland Roy in 1995.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated on Friday, Sept. 17, at St. Philip’s Church in Auburn. Interment was at the Maine Veterans Memorial cemetery in Augusta. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Mike’s memory to the Androscoggin Home Care & Hospice, P.O. Box 797 Wilton, ME 04294.

Clarence Albert Perkins

YORK - Clarence Albert Perkins, 71, of York died Thursday, Sept. 16, 2004, at his home after a long illness. He was born April 5, 1933, in York, the son of Lester E. and Sylvia (Ramsdell) Perkins. He attended York Schools and worked for the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and the state of Maine.

Clarence is survived by his wife, Geneva (Rollins) Perkins; his son, David and his wife, Margaret Perkins of Woburn, Mass.; his son, Danny of York; his daughters, Sharon and Dianne, both of York; 15 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents; a brother, William Perkins; two sons, Robert Perkins and Allen Perkins; and a daughter, Darlene Herpst.

Clarence was born, raised and lived his whole life on Mount Agamenticus.

Funeral services were held Monday, Sept. 20, at the Wilson Cooper Funeral Home, Kittery, Maine.

Phyllis B. Groves

YORK BEACH - Phyllis B. Groves, 82, of 15 Beacon St., York Beach, widow of John S. Groves, died Monday, Sept. 13, 2004, at York Hospital.

She was born in Nashua, N.H., on Aug. 29, 1922, the daughter of Kenneth and Dorothy (Spaulding) Buxton and was a 1940 graduate of Nashua High School.

She lived in Nashua and Hudson, N.H., for most of her life. Mrs. Groves and her husband summered in York Beach for more than 40 years and operated Groves Cottages from 1961 to 1978. She wintered in Spring Hill, Fla., for 25 years.

Phyllis was a devoted wife and loving mother. She dedicated her life to spending time with her children and grandchildren. What she enjoyed most was being surrounded by her family and friends. Everyone who had the pleasure of knowing her was energized by her love. She was a perky lady. She was known to have a love of games, including cribbage, card games and Yahtzee, which she spent many hours playing with her family and friends.

She was predeceased by her husband, John S. Groves, who died in April 2003.

Survivors include three sons, John S. Groves Jr. and his wife, Judith, of York Beach and Florida, Richard S. Groves of Rye, N.H., and Steven P. Groves and his wife, Kathy, of York Beach; a daughter, JoAnn Daniels and her husband, Mark, of Kittery; one sister, Lucille Sanders of Chelmsford, Mass.; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, Oct. 1, at Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York. Private burial will be in Hudson, N.H. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial donations may be sent to the York Public Library, 15 Long Sands Road, York, ME 03909.

Elizabeth R. Hanson

OGUNQUIT - Elizabeth "Betty" Rowe Hanson, 87, of 22 Stearns Road, Ogunquit, widow of Col. Arthur F. Hanson, U.S. Army, died Monday, Sept. 13, 2004, at York Hospital.

She was born May 13, 1917, in Portland, the daughter of William J. and Pearl L. (Lang) Rowe and was a graduate of Portland High School. She was a 1939 graduate of the University of New Hampshire, where she received a Bachelor of Science degree and served her physical therapist internship at Walter Reed Army Hospital.

Betty was a privately contracted physical therapist for the U.S. Army during the 1940s. She later moved to the Seacoast area and was a private-duty physical therapist during the 1950s.

Betty also traveled and lived in many areas during her husband’s military service and post-service career. She lived in Puerto Rico, Panama, Concord and Plymouth, N.H., and most recently wintered in Long Boat Key, Fla.

She was an avid golfer, past president of the Cape Neddick Country Club Women’s League and a member of the Ogunquit Women’s Club. She enjoyed skiing, tennis and playing bridge. She was an active volunteer for many organizations, including the UNH Alumni Association, American Cancer Society, Red Cross and for various activities at Plymouth State College. She was a chapel member of the Long Boat Island Chapel and a volunteer at the Lord’s Warehouse in Long Boat Key, Fla.

She was predeceased by her husband, Col. Arthur F. Hanson, U.S. Army, who died in 1988.

Survivors include two daughters, Tina I. Virgin and her husband, Karl, of Ogunquit and Kimberly H. Robinson and her husband, Bradford, of York; two sisters, Nancy LaFond and her husband, Les, of Ogunquit and Sally McQuade of Drakes Island; four grandchildren, Timothy Virgin, Amy Golden, Lindsay and Tanner Robinson; and several nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life was held, Friday, Sept. 17, in First Parish Congregational Church of York. Memorial donations may be made to the UNH Alumni Association, 9 Edgewood Drive, Durham, NH 03824 or the Ogunquit Fire Rescue, P.O. Box 875, Ogunquit, ME 03907. Arrangements by the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, York, Maine.

Pauline V. Coppola

KENNEBUNKPORT - Mrs. Pauline V. (Sullivan) Coppola, 97, of Kennebunkport and formerly of Haverhill, Mass., died Saturday, Nov. 20, 2004, at her home.

She was born in Manchester, N.H., on July 24, 1907, the daughter of the late John J. and Mabel Lena (Girard) Sullivan.

At an early age, her family moved to Haverhill where she attended the Haverhill Public School System and was later a graduate of Haverhill High School.

Before her retirement, Mrs. Coppola was employed as a social worker for the state of Massachusetts. After retirement, she studied art and enjoyed oil painting. She was a Kennebunkport resident for the past 40 years.

Her survivors include three stepchildren, John Coppola, of Haverhill, Frank J. Coppola Jr. of Kennebunkport, Natalie Dicristofaro of Kennebunkport; and several cousins, including the Fitzgerald, Muir and Langevin families.

At her request, a private funeral Mass was held last Tuesday at St. John the Baptist Church in Haverhill. Burial was in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, in Haverhill.

Georgiana Donnell

YORK HARBOR - Georgiana Donnell, 84, of 18 Simpson Lane, died Friday, Nov. 26 at her home after a long illness.

She was born in Presque Isle, Maine, on Aug. 18, 1920, the daughter of Edward and Laura (Violet) Tardy. She was a 1939 graduate of Presque Isle High School and a medal-winning speed skater at her school.

Mrs. Donnell worked at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for several years during World War II and later worked at the ticket sales at the former Mount Agamenticus Ski Area in York. She started Captain Dan’s Restaurant in York Harbor, which she operated for four years. Mrs. Donnell also operated Donnell’s Marina for many years.

She enjoyed reading and was an avid bowler in several leagues at Bowl-A-Rama in Portsmouth.

Mrs. Donnell had just celebrated her 60th wedding anniversary on Nov. 11.

Survivors include her husband, Daniel P. Donnell of York Harbor; two sons, Daniel P. Donnell, Jr. and his wife, Beverly Jernberg of Poolsville, Md., and Michael Donnell and his wife, Marsha of Hanover, Mass; one daughter, Mary Coite and her husband, Bill of York Harbor; a sister, Verna Gagnon of Presque Isle; four grandchildren, Megan Donnell, Marisa Donnell, Amanda Donnell and Jonathan Donnell; two great-grandchildren, Emerence and Michael Joseph.

A funeral Mass was held Monday in St. Christopher Church on York Street. Arrangements made by Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, N.E. Division, 1 Main St., Suite 300, Topsham, Maine, 04086.
