Joseph W. Hoyt Jr.

YORK - Joseph W. Hoyt Jr., 59, of Winter Haven, Fla. and Orono, Maine, died Thursday, Nov. 18, 2004, at Winter Haven Hospital.

He was born on May 6, 1945, in Pueblo, Colo., the son of Joseph W. and Elizabeth Norton Hoyt of Cape Neddick. He resided in York, Wells and Greenville, moving to Winter Haven, Fla., in 2001.

He was a 1964 graduate of York High School. Soon after graduating, he worked for Kuhn Memorial Corp., developing the park and art gallery in Cape Neddick. He owned Vi and Ted’s Laundry in Wells, and later had a wholesale bakery route. He sold automobiles for some years and then became a contract carrier for the U.S. Postal Service until his retirement.

He served as King Lion in the Wells-Ogunquit Lions Club. He was a member of the Wells Beach Fire Department and a deputy sheriff in York County. He was a member of St. John’s Masonic Lodge 51 of South Berwick and the Kora Shrine Temple in Augusta.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, cooking and time spent with his family. He was very proud that John Alden of the Mayflower was his ancestor, and because of this fact, he annually chaired the committee that served the Thanksgiving dinner for the residents of the mobile home park where he lived.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by two sons, Eugene Hoyt Knowles and his wife, Melissa, of Buxton, Maine, and Raymond Hoyt of Cape Neddick and Winter Haven, Fla.; one stepson, Paul Tart and his wife, Cheryl, of Lewiston, Maine; two daughters and their husbands, Candy and William Hayes of Lowman, N.Y., and Tammy and Marc Wysocki of Sheffield, Mass.; six grandchildren; two brothers, John Hoyt of Kensington and Robert Hoyt of Cape Neddick; one sister, Bette Ann Whitten of Acton, Maine; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service celebrating his life will be held Sunday, Dec. 5, at noon at St. Aspinquid Masonic Lodge 198, 101 Long Sands Road, in York. A time for refreshments and exchanging memories with his family will be held following the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Shriner’s Hospital that services Maine patients at 516 Carew St., Springfield, Mass., 01104-2396.

Isabel A. Irwin

KITTERY - Isabel A. Irwin, 77, died Thursday, Nov. 18, 2004, at York Hospital after a long battle with cancer.

She was born in Montpelier, Vt., to Cipriano and Maria Amor, on Jan. 29, 1927. She graduated from the University of Vermont and immediately began her 25-year teaching career at many high schools and colleges. During her time in the Spanish Department at the University of New Hampshire, she received her master’s degree and started the Junior Year Abroad program for Spanish students.

After 25 years of teaching, which she loved, she was nevertheless ready for a new career. With some instruction from her sister and from the Gemological Institute of America, she and her daughter Ann opened a jewelry store, G. Irwin Company, in Kittery in 1987. The business continues on Route 1. She thoroughly enjoyed her time as a jewelry store owner.

She leaves her husband, George Irwin of Kittery; three daughters, Ann Pardoe of York, Maria Franco of Oakland, N.J., and Laura Morris of Cape Elizabeth, Maine; two sisters, Dolores Monks of Andover, Mass., and Amparo Bliss of Vermont; a brother, Luis Amor of Vermont; and seven grandchildren from ages 10 to 25, of whom she was very proud.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 4 at the First Parish Congregational Church, on York Street. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, N.E. Division, 1 Main Street, Suite 300, Topsham, Maine, 04086. Arrangements by the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, York.

Edith P. Coogan

YORK - Edith P. Coogan, 83, of York, died Dec. 2, 2004, at Sentry Hill, with her husband at her side.

Edith was born on May 25, 1921, in Westbury, N.Y., and moved to York in 1967 with her husband, Fairfield G. Coogan. She is survived by her four daughters, Josephine, Elizabeth, Amy and Edith.

A funeral service will be held today at 10 a.m. at St. George’s Episcopal Church in York Harbor. Memorial contributions can be made to St. George’s Church, 407 York St., in York Harbor.

Anne C. Gallagher

MANCHESTER, N.H. - Anne (Campbell) McManus Gallagher died Dec. 4, 2004, at Courville Nursing Home in Manchester after a long illness.

She was born on June 21, 1926, in Jamaica Plain, Mass., the daughter of George and Laura (Boufford) Campbell. She lived in Wells Beach and Manchester, N.H., for most of her life.

She leaves behind eight children: Mrs. Jerry (Nancy) Fields of Columbia, Mo.; Mrs. John (Laura) Murphy of Auburn, N.H.; Mrs. Steve (Mary) Lesniak of Manchester, N.H.; Mrs. Paul (Betty) Rich of Manchester, N.H.; Mr. Bernard McManus, of Manchester, N.H., Ms. Ellen Weist of Plymouth, Ind.; and Mrs. Steve (Diane) Chase of Wells; 17 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; a brother, Mr. Peter Campbell of Sebago Lake, Maine, and a sister, Mrs. Harold (Jeanette) McGilvray of Tampa, Fla., and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was the granddaughter of Joseph Nazaire Boufford, the founder of J.N. Boufford & Sons Funeral Home.

She was predeceased by her parents; her husbands, Bernard McManus and Thomas Gallagher; two sisters, Alida Mahon and Priscilla Tucker; two brothers, George and James Campbell.

Calling hours are today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at J.N. Boufford & Sons, 110 Bridge St., Manchester, N.H. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 9, at the funeral home. Burial will be at Mount Benedict Cemetery, West Roxbury, Mass., later that day at 2:30 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to Derry Home Health and Hospice, 1 East Commons Drive, Unit 31, Londonderry, N.H., 03053.

Katherine M. (Murphy) Harman

MOODY - Katherine M. (Murphy) Harman, 54, of Moody, died Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2004, at York Hospital.

She was born in Cambridge, Mass., the daughter of the late Patrick and Mildred (O’Connell) Murphy. Mrs. Harman had been employed by John Hancock Financial Services in Boston as a supervisor of retirement plans. She retired from there in 2000.

She was a member of Quinobequin Chapter Order of the Eastern Star in Medway and had served as Worthy Matron for that chapter. She also served as the Grand Chapter of Massachusetts Easter Star as representative to the Grand Chapter of Eastern Star of Idaho.

She is survived by her husband, Charles Harman; a brother, Patrick Murphy of Burlington, Mass.; a sister, Maureen Degelan of Londonderry, N.H.

The funeral was held Monday, Dec. 6, in the Watson Colonial Funeral Home, 24 Congress St. in Milford, Mass. Burial took place in Vernon Grove Cemetery.

Donations in Mrs. Harman’s memory may be made to the Dana–Farber Cancer Institute, 10 Brookline Place West, Floor 6, Brookline, Mass., 02445–9924.

Patricia A. (Miller) Meagher

HAVERHILL, Mass. - Patricia A. (Miller) Meagher, 74, of Haverhill, Mass., died Saturday, Dec. 4, at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston.

She was educated in the Haverhill schools; a graduate of Haverhill High School in 1948 and a graduate of Academy Moderne, Boston.

For 24 years until her retirement in September 2004 she was the housing service director for Community Action, Inc., Haverhill, Mass. Following her retirement, she had been associated with the Haverhill Housing Authority.

For seven years she had taught a First Time Home Buyers program at Northern Essex Community College in Haverhill. She was a member of the board of directors of Emmaus, Inc., Haverhill; and on the board of INC. She served on the Haverhill Community Affairs Advisory Board; the Community Housing Resource Board and the Fair Housing Committee for the City of Haverhill.

Her surviving family members are her daughter, Lee Ann Ferguson and her husband, Robert E. Ferguson of Bradford; her son, Brian M. Meagher and his wife, Caroline Kippin of York; her sister, Eileen Miller Jean and her husband, Robert Jean of Georgetown, Mass.; her two brothers, William D. Miller and his wife, Madeline Miller of Haverhill and Frank P. Miller and his wife, Patricia Miller of Haverhill; several nieces and nephews; her eight grandchildren, Amber Meagher of Rollingsford, N.H.; Brooke, Breanna and Braiden Ferguson, all of Bradford, Mass.; Devon, Morgan, John and Colby Meagher, all of York; her two step-grandchildren, Cori and Samantha Kippin of York.

She was the mother of the late William J. P. Meagher, who died Jan. 31, 1998; and was the grandmother of the late Dylan Meagher.

The funeral will be held Thursday, Dec. 9, at 9 a.m. from the C. Frank Linnehan & Son Bradford Funeral Home, 52 Salem St., Bradford, Mass., followed by a Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. in St. James Church, 185 Winter St., Haverhill. Burial will be in St. James Cemetery, Primrose Street, Haverhill.

Calling hours at the C. Frank Linnehan & Son Bradford Funeral Home, 52 Salem St., Bradford, Mass., will be held today from 5 to 8 p.m.

John W. O’Brien

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - John W. O’Brien, of West Palm Beach, Fla., formerly of Ogunquit, passed away at Hospice of Palm Beach County on Friday, Dec. 3, 2004.

John was born in Melrose, Mass., on Feb. 10, 1932, to Victoria and John O’Brien. He graduated from Suffolk University and retired from Digital Equipment Corporation as corporate human resource manager. Survivors include a loving wife of 46 years, Rosemary F. O’Brien; his five children, Gilbert of Stratham N.H., Joseph of Wells, Kathleen Thornton of York, Christopher of Santa Barbara, Calif., and David of York; and his eight grandchildren, Marc, Amy, Josh, Shaun, Conor, Megan, Tyler, and Emily; his two brothers, Edward of Wakefield, Mass., and Michael of Marathon, Fla.; and his sister, Joanne Murphy of Peabody, Mass., along with many nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, Dec. 10, at 9:30 a.m. in Saint Christopher’s Church on York Street, York. Internment will be in First Parish Cemetery. Family and friends may call at Lucas Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Rd. York, on Thursday, Dec. 9 from 6 to 8 p.m.

Jean E. Totten

YORK HARBOR - Jean E. Totten, 71, of 2 Victoria Court, died Monday, Nov. 29, at York Harbor Health Care at Sentry Hill after a long illness.

She was born in Plainfield, N.J., on March 11, 1933, the daughter of Edgar and Maude E. (Brotsman) Brokaw and was a graduate of North Plainfield High School.

Mrs. Totten had worked as a loan processor in the Mortgage Department of North Plainfield Savings Bank for many years.

Mrs. Totten was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Dunellen, N.J. Jean enjoyed bowling in local North Plainfield area leagues, was a member of the North Plainfield Ski Club and a Girl Scout Leader. She also enjoyed gardening, decorating her home and knitting. Mrs. Totten had resided at the Homestead and Sentry Hill nursing homes for the past 14 years and enjoyed reading and playing bingo.

She was predeceased by a son, Kenneth N. Totten, who died in 1963.

Survivors include two daughters, Janet A. Stitt and her husband, Michael J. of York, and Linda J. Hurley and her husband, James of Green Brook, N.J.; a sister, Phyllis Brokaw of Willow Street, Pa.; four grandchildren, Kenneth Stitt and Grace, Allison, and Meredith Hurley.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, Dec. 10, in the First Parish Church of York on York Street, York. A reception will follow the service. Memorial donations may be made to the Harbor Home Activities Fund, c/o Carol Cain, 6 Norwood Farms Road, York, Maine, 03909. Arrangements by the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home in York.

William C. Black

SEABROOK, N.H. - William C. Black, 42, died Monday, Oct. 4, 2004, at his home in Seabrook, N.H.

He was born in York on June 3, 1962, the son of Mary Andrews and the late Charles Black of York.

Mr. Black was raised in York and attended York Schools. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps.

He worked as a sheet metal mechanic and also as a cook. He resided in Seabrook for several years. His hobbies included fishing, reading, music, camping and enjoying nature.

In addition to his mother, family members include his stepfather, Allan Andrews of York; two sons, Alexander Black and Tony Black, both of Haverhill, Mass.; his daughter, Alyssa Black of Seabrook, N.H.; two brothers, Clint Black of Berwick and Charles Black and his wife, Stephanie, of York; two stepbrothers, Jeffrey Andrews of Chichester, N.H., Michael Andrews of Washington, N.H., and his stepsister, Kathie Walker of Pipestone, Minn.; and several nieces and nephews.

Private graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the William Black Scholarship Fund for his three children, c/o Kennebunk Savings Bank, P.O. Box 39, York, Maine 03909. Arrangements are by the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton, N.H.

Margaret Bliss Benson

YORK - Margaret Bliss Benson, 79, died at Harbor Home in York, on Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2004, after a long illness.

Her determined independence and the grace and dignity with which she met her last challenges were an inspiration to the many who adored her. They include her three children, Frank Robert Benson of Taipei, Taiwan, Kathleen Benson Haskins of New York, N.Y., and Craig Alan Benson of York; her daughter-in-law, Andrea Benson; her son-in-law, James Haskins; her three grandchildren, Michael Craig Benson, Marcus Ellis Benson and Margaret Emily Haskins; and her two sisters, Jane King Bowers and Dorothy Doolittle, nearly all of whom visited her in the last month of her life.

Born Nov. 25, 1924, in Schenectady, N.Y., Peggy grew up in Winchester, N.H., and later lived in Northampton, Mass.; Windsor Locks, Conn.; Reading, Mass.; Wells, Maine; Oxford, Maine; and Poland, Maine. Her favorite residence was her cottage on Thompson Lake in Oxford, Maine. After a modest memorial service for immediate family and friends, her remains will be buried at Gracelawn Memorial Park, in Auburn, Maine.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Lung Society, American Cancer Society, or Androscoggin Home Health Care Center, in Lewiston.

Helen Florence Doyle

YORK - Helen Florence Doyle, 98, of Victoria Court, formerly Marlborough, Mass., died Monday, Oct. 4, 2004, at the York Harbor Health Care at Sentry Hill.

She was born Feb. 15, 1906, in Marlborough, Mass., the daughter of Alexander and Emma (Moody) Matheson and graduated from Marlborough High School.

Mrs. Doyle worked in the office for several shoe factories, including Fry Shoe and Spaulding Shoe Company for many years. Later, she retired as clerical worker in the assessor’s office in the Marlborough City Hall.

She was a member of the First Church of Marlborough Congregational Unitarian Church and she had been a member of the Eastern Star in Marlborough. Mrs. Doyle loved to sew and donated many handmade aprons to the Women’s Fellowship of the First Parish Congregational Church in York.

Mrs. Doyle was predeceased by her husband, Michael Doyle, who died in 1968; her brothers, Fred Mathseon and Christopher "Christy" Matheson, who died during the Normandy invasion, and by a sister, Thelma Craig.

She is survived by her son, John R. Watson of York Harbor; three grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and a sister, Evelyn Cole of Hudson, Mass.

Graveside services were held at Evergreen Cemetery, Marlborough, Mass. Memorial donations may be made to the First Parish Congregational Church, 180 York St., York, Maine 03909. Arrangements by Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, York.

Eleanor M. (Carlette) Johnson

ABINGTON, Mass. - Eleanor Mary (Carlette) Johnson, 97, died Thursday, Sept. 22, 2004, in Abington, Mass.

She was the beloved wife of the late Allan L. Johnson, the devoted mother of Eleanor Franey of York and Allan F. Johnson of Biddeford. She was the loving grandmother of six grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren with poignant memories. Service observances and burial will be private. Arrangements by the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home of York.
