Lillian M. Kenney

MELROSE, Mass. - Miss Lillian Marie Kenney, a lifelong resident of Melrose, died Oct. 5, 2004, at the Melrose-Wakefield Hospital.

Miss Kenney was born in Melrose, Feb. 10, 1926, the daughter of the late Ashton L. and Marguerite (Gross) Kenney.

Miss Kenney was the winner of the 2003 Bread of Life Award for the Melrose Soup Kitchen. Miss Kenney’s parents were very active in the Melrose community. Her mother worked at the voting polls, taught ceramics and volunteered at the Melrose Red Cross. Her father worked 45 years at the First National Bank of Malden.

She is survived by two sisters, Phyllis A. Benson of Moody, Maine, and Elaine Gardner of Deerfield, N.H.; also by several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

A memorial service will be at the Green Street Baptist Church, 179 Green St. in Melrose, Mass., on Sunday, Oct. 17, at 2 p.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Evanell Mae (Kenny) Lyons

PORTSMOUTH, N.H. - Evanell Mae Lyons, 95, formerly of Cape Neddick, died Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004, at Edgewood Center Nursing Home in Portsmouth, N.H., where she was a resident for the past five years.

She was born on July 31, 1909, in Clarks Harbor, Nova Scotia, the daughter of Minard and Geneva Kenny.

Mrs. Lyons formerly resided in East Boston and Winthrop, Mass., and wintered at Edgewater, Fla. She was a member of the Union Congregational Church, in York Beach. She was past worthy matron of the Eastern Star in Winthrop, Mass. She dedicated her life to helping family and friends and enjoyed time with her family. She will be loved and missed by all.

She was predeceased by her loving husband of 64 years, Arnold Lyons, who died in 1994; her son, Richard Lyons and a daughter, Shirley Donovan.

Survivors include two sons, Lloyd Lyons of Winthrop, Mass., and Ken Lyons of Cape Neddick; 11 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements are by E.P. Caggiano and Son, 145 Winthrop St., Winthrop, Mass. Services will conclude Wednesday, Oct. 13, with Interment in Woodlawn Cemetery, Everett, Mass.

Mary Louise Saunders Wold

DOVER, NH. - Mary Louise Saunders Wold, 81, died peacefully on Thursday, Oct. 7, 2004, surrounded by her family at the Wentworth Home after a long battle with cancer. A burial service was held the following day at Pine Hill Cemetery.

A resident of Dover the past 18 years, Louise was born in Neosho, Mo., the daughter of William Henderson Saunders and Jesse Borah, on Oct. 5, 1923, and grew up in Dallas. She was the seventh child in a family of eight children and began her career as a flight attendant with Pan Am Airlines, where she helped to organize the first flight attendant’s labor union. While attending an aviation conference, she met her husband of 44 years, William Clifford Wold, who predeceased her in 1991.

After marriage, Louise and Bill Wold settled in Greenwich, Conn. Twenty years later, the family moved to Madison, N.H., and then Ossipee, N.H., before settling in Dover, N.H. As a New Hampshire tree farmer, she was most proud of her recent donation to the town of Madison. A preserve of open space and walking trails is protected forever in her name. She was also a member of the Society for the Protection of N.H. Forests, the Nature Conservancy and the Smithsonian Institution.

Throughout her life, Louise has believed in the potential nobility of peoples. This has given her wise counsel and loving encouragement to everyone she met. She strongly believed in the oneness of mankind and supported racial and religious harmony, the importance of educational opportunity, and social and economic justice. Louise was a member of the Baha’i Faith. She loved traveling throughout Latin America as a Pan Am flight attendant, beginning a lifelong affinity for the people, the language and the culture. As a Baha’i teacher she made trips to remote mountain villages in Central America, helping people to establish their local institutions.

Louise worked as a hospital volunteer in Greenwich and continued to volunteer in hospitals after moving to North Conway, N.H. Louise held a bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas and after her children were grown, she went on to earn a master’s degree in clinical psychology from Antioch New England. With her professional training, Louise became a guidance counselor at Kennett High School in Conway, N.H.

Louise was an advocate for human rights and equality of men and women. She was a longtime supporter of the National Organization of Women, Planned Parenthood and A Safe Place.

In recent years, Louise indulged in her love of New England’s natural beauty and learned to create art with pastels, enjoying yearly trips to the village of Lubec in northern Maine and Campobello Island, where she practiced her art in depicting the coastal scenery. Louise was an avid bridge player most of her life and was a member of a summer bridge league in York as well as a Dover, N.H., bridge club.

Louise is survived by her five children and six grandchildren. Also surviving are her sisters, Wanda Lewellan of Louisiana, Mo., and Charlotte Love of St. Petersburg, Fla.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, Oct. 14, at 10 a.m. at the Wentworth Retirement Home, 795 Central Ave., Dover, N.H. In lieu of flowers, the family would request that a donation be made in her honor to the Seacoast Hospice or the Nature Conservancy.

Barbara Appleton Blaxter

EXETER, N.H. - Barbara Appleton Blaxter, daughter of John A. and Elsa R. Appleton, died very peacefully Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2004, surrounded by her family, at Exeter Health Care in Exeter, N.H., after a short illness.

Born in Bryn Mawr, Pa., she graduated from Old Fields School, Class of 1944. married to G. Harold Blaxter on Jan. 3, 1953, she and her husband resided on Hazel Lane in Sewickley, Pa. until 1994, at which point they moved to the RiverWoods Retirement Community in Exeter, N.H.

As one of the earliest residents of this community, she was known as an outgoing and active member who reached out to fellow residents. As a trained singer who loved theatrical productions, she started a dramatic recitations group for fellow thespians. An avid reader, she was well-known at her local library and also enjoyed researching her family’s genealogy. Her bridge partners will miss her dearly.

As a lifelong summer resident and property owner in the York Harbor area, she could often be seen at the Stage Neck Inn pool, the York Harbor Reading Room and the York Harbor Beach enjoying the sun and ocean in the company of her friends.

She is survived by her three children, John R. Blaxter of Brattleboro, Vt., George H. Blaxter of Andover, Mass. and Jennifer D. Hubbert of San Jose, Calif.

The memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Oct. 30 at RiverWoods Retirement Community in Exeter, N.H. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Exeter Public Library or Seacoast Hospice.

Elizabeth R. Crosby

YORK BEACH - Elizabeth Rose Crosby, 89, formerly of 32 Nubble Road, died Sunday, Oct. 24, 2004, at Harbor Home.

She was born in Concord, N.H., on Feb. 13, 1915, the daughter of Louis and Marion (Taylor) Corbett. She was a 1932 graduate of Concord High School and a 1936 graduate of the University of New Hampshire, where she received a bachelor’s of physical education degree.

Mrs. Crosby was a communicant of St. Christopher-by-the-Sea Church of York. She enjoyed bowling and was a well-known patron of Anderson’s Bakery. She summered in York Beach for many years and wintered at her son’s residence in Alexandria, Va. before becoming a full-time York Beach resident.

She was predeceased by her husband, Raymond A. Crosby, who died in 1977 and by a granddaughter, Terri Jackson, who died in January 2004.

Survivors include one son, Robert K. Crosby and his wife, Robin, of York Beach; one daughter, Joan Carolyn Hudson and her husband, Charles Hudson, of Bonneau, S.C.; a brother, John W. Corbett and his wife, Irene, of Concord, N.H.; seven grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandson.

A memorial Mass will be held at 9:30 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 28 in St. Christopher’s Church, York St., York. Memorial donations may be made to the Harbor Home Activities Fund, 6 Norwood Farms Road, York, 03909.

Margaret ‘Peggy’ Dore

YORK - Margaret "Peggy" Avilla Dore, 88, of 6 Norwood Farms Road, died Friday evening following a long period of declining health.

She was born April 5, 1916 in Buxton, the daughter of Walter C. and Matilda Ham Leavitt.

She attended Hollis Center schools and formerly worked in the Saco-Lowell Textile Mills. For many years she knitted and braided rugs and sold them from her home at the "Old Trunk Shop" on Route 1 in York.

In 1947, she married Mahlon Dore, and together they raised two children, Timothy M. Dore of Sandown, N.H. and Clarissa "Gloria" Goodwin of Eliot. Her husband, Mahlon, died in 1974.

Besides her son and daughter, she is survived by four grandchildren, Mary and her husband; John Robles, and their daughter Sierra, of Somersworth, N.H., David and his wife, Christine Goodwin, and their children Courtney and Trevor of Kittery, Mark Goodwin and Brandie Gray and their daughter Shyanne of Berwick, and Deborah Goodwin and her daughter Shania Cornnett of Chesapeake, Va.; and her beloved sister, Daisy Leavitt of Arundel. She will be missed by all who knew her.

Ruth Page Maloy

YORK - Ruth Page Maloy, 78, of Chases Pond Road, died Saturday, Oct. 23, 2004 at her home surrounded by those who loved her.

She was born in Boston, the daughter of Carl Alanson and Charlotte (Holbrook) Page. Ruth was a graduate of Cushing Academy of Ashburnham, Mass.

She was married for more than 50 years to Russell Harford Maloy, who predeceased her on Oct. 13, 2000. Ruth truly enjoyed being a homemaker and was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

In her spare time, she loved needlepoint, quilting and rug braiding.

Ruth was a member of the Eliot United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the York Extension and the Order of the Eastern Star. Ruth was a 4-H leader, Cub Scout den mother and Brownie leader. In her later years, Ruth enjoyed playing golf and was a long-time member of the York Golf and Tennis Club. She was also a volunteer at the Strawberry Banke Museum in Portsmouth.

She is survived by her son, Eugene Aubrey Maloy of Algiers, La.; her daughter, Karen and her husband, James M. Prichard, of York; two grandchildren, Douglas Goslin and his wife, Rebecca, of Olympia, Wash. and Michael Boardman and his wife, Daniella, of Knetzgau, Germany; two step-children, Isisanne Wiley and her husband Jason of York and James E. Prichard of York and four great-grandchildren.

Mary Margaret Burnap Rasche

KENNEBUNK - Mary Margaret Burnap Rasche, 96, died peacefully Monday, Oct. 18, 2004 at her assisted living residence at Bradford on the Common in Kennebunk.

Mary Margaret lived a long life characterized by love of family; an energetic, caring, and concerned outlook for everyone she met, and a determination to be useful to others. She was born May 28, 1908 in Pelican Rapids, Minn., the daughter of Dr. Willard L. Burnap and Mary Abby Merrill Burnap. She was the sister of Eunice Burnap Jackson, Catharine Burnap Bruce and Barbara Burnap Donoho, all of whom predeceased her. She was the widow of the Rev. Dr. Robert L. Rasche.

She lived in Pelican Rapids until she was in the first grade, moving to Fergus Falls, Minn. where her father and two other doctors established a medical clinic. She grew up in Fergus Falls, during which time she and her sisters helped their father and others build a complex of log cabins, which is still in use at Star Lake and which until recently was the summer home of the Burnaps and later their progeny and their families.

Mary Margaret attended the University of Minnesota, graduating in 1930 with a specialty in preschool child development on which she would draw much of her later life. While at the university, she was very active in the First Congregational Church of Minnesota in Minneapolis, a church where her grandfather Merrill had served as pastor and where her father and mother had met.

Mary Margaret and her husband, Robert Rasche, married Sept. 3, 1932 in Fergus Falls.

Following World War II, she returned with her family for a brief stay in Northfield, but shortly came to Beverly. Mass. in 1946 and remained there until 1964 when her husband retired and they moved into a home that they had built in Topsfield, Mass. She lived there until 1987 when she moved to a retirement community in Whitewater, Wis. where her sister Eunice also lived. In 2001, she returned to New England to live in the Huntington Common retirement complex in Kennebunk where she was near her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She had a burning desire to be useful to others. She was an unofficial foster parent and caring mentor to countless young people and she was a ready and caring friend to anyone she felt needed a hand. She accepted people for who they were and, in her non-judgmental way, always looked for the best in everyone.

Mary Margaret was a member of the P.E.O Sisterhood since 1933. In 2002 she was honored for 75 years of membership in Sigma Kappa Sorority.

Mary Margaret is survived by her son and daughter in law, Robert W. and Margaret E. Rasche of Wells; four grandchildren, Robert C. Rasche of Bellingham, Mass. and his wife, Jan, Stephen M. Rasche of York, and his wife, Tori, Robin E. Barnard of Wells and her husband, Kevin, and Kathryn A. Andrews of Wells, and her husband, Eric. She leaves eight great-grand children, Anna, Katherine, Samuel, and Thomas Rasche, Timothy Barnard, and Madeline, Elizabeth, and Gary Andrews. She is also survived by Sheng (Charles) Han of Scottsdale, Ariz.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Mary Margaret’s name to Robert L. Rasche Scholarship Fund, Second Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, 35 Conant Street, Beverly, Mass., 01915.

John Nicholas Alafogianis

YORK - John Nicholas Alafogianis, 80, of 6 Norwood Farms Road, formerly of Fall Mills Road, died Thursday, Oct. 28, 2004, at Harbor Home.

He was born in Lynn, Mass., on June 10, 1924, the son of Nicholas and Jenny (Lagganis) Alafogianis. He graduated from Lynn Classical High School.

Mr. Alafogianis lived in the Lynn area for many years before moving to York. A self-employed plumber, he was known in the York area as "Johnnie the plumber."

He was predeceased by his wife, Gertrude May (Horan) Alafogianis, who died in October 2003, and by a sister, Jenny Armaniditis of Lynn.

Survivors include two children, David of Lynn, Mass., and Donna Andy of Sanbornville, N.H.; a sister, Mary Fassos of Marlboro, Mass., and several nieces.

Services are private.

C. Margaret Horning

KITTERY - C. Margaret Horning, 93, of Adams Road in Kittery, died Thursday, Oct. 28, 2004, at the Edgewood Centre in Portsmouth.

She was born on Dec. 24, 1910, in Kittery, the daughter of Roland and Clara (Hayes) Adams. She attended local schools and was a graduate of R.W. Traip Academy in the class of 1928.

Margaret was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a lifelong homemaker who delighted in cooking for her family and many friends. Her cookie jars were never empty and were a treat for all ages.

Her hobbies included cooking, embroidery, playing cards, picking wild blueberries and spending time with her family and friends.

She was a member of Saint Mark’s Methodist Church in Kittery.

She was predeceased by her husband, Arnold Horning; a son, Clinton; and daughters Jane and Patricia.

Survivors include three sons, Russell Horning of Edgewater, Fla., Harry Horning Jr. of Kittery and James Horning of Kittery; 14 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

A graveside service was held Nov. 1 at the First Parish Cemetery, York Street, York. Donations may be made to the Calvary Baptist Church, 472 Ocean Road, Portsmouth, N.H. 03801. Arrangements by the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, York.
