Jean B. Fernald

YORK - Jean B. Fernald, 78, of York, formerly of West Newbury, Mass., died Saturday, Nov. 6, 2004, at York Hospital after a short illness.

She was born in Haverhill, Mass., on Aug. 4, 1926, the daughter of the late W. Gordon Booth and Jenny (Boutwell) Booth. Mrs. Fernald was a retired elementary school teacher, having taught at Lincoln School in Springfield, Mass., and for 18 years at the West Newbury Central School. She graduated from North Tonawanda High School in North Tonawanda, N.Y., in 1944 and Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Mass., in 1948.

She was a member of the West Newbury Congregational Church, Fidelity Chapter 90 Order of Eastern Star and the Delta Kappa Gamma Society-Epsilon Chapter.

Besides her husband, Arthur E. Fernald, she leaves two daughters, Deborah S. Fernald of York and Jill F. Godin and her husband, the late David K. Godin, of Groveland, Mass.; two sons and their wives, Bruce A. and Anna S. Fernald of Coeymans, N.Y., and Lt. Col. (ret.) Scott A. and Denise R. Fernald, of Manassas, Va.; and eight grandchildren.

She also leaves a sister, Dorothy B. Mustard of West Roxbury, Mass., and several nieces and nephews. She also had a brother, the late Gordon A. Booth, Pittsburgh, Pa.

Services will be private. A memorial service will be held on Friday, Nov. 26, at 2 p.m. at the West Newbury Congregational Church.

Kathy Ann Couture

CAPE NEDDICK - Kathy Ann Couture, 47, of Sewalls Pasture Road, died Sunday, Nov. 14, 2004, after a battle with breast cancer.

She was born Dec. 3, 1956, in Augusta, the daughter of George and Joan Anderson. She was raised in North Berwick and attended SAD 60. She graduated from Noble High School with the Class of 1975. Her father was the residing principal of Noble High School and he retired in 1978.

She resided in Cape Neddick for more than 25 years and was employed at various large insurance, financial and retail businesses from Boston to Freeport, Maine. She attended New Hampshire College and graduated from the Class of 1983 with a major in general management. She has worked in computer software since 1983 and was a software contracting consultant for the past 12 years.

She loved building her own homes, outdoor activities like Caribbean cruises, karate and family gatherings - all of which she shared with her loving husband of 26 years, Marc Couture.

She will be dearly missed by those who knew and loved her, including her husband; her sisters, Carol Fitzpatrick and her husband, John of Accord, N.Y., Janice Anderson of Lincoln, Maine, Janet Murch and her husband, Mike of Winterport, Maine and Laurie Belden and her husband, Jay, of Durham, Maine; her brother, Robert Anderson of Liberty, Maine; and nieces, nephews and many friends.

Public visitation will be held Friday, Nov. 19 from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York, Maine. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Hospice of York, 5 Hospital Drive, York.

Joseph Fiandaca Sr.

YORK BEACH - Joseph Fiandaca Sr.’s courageous 1 1/2-year battle with leukemia ended Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2004. He died at home, surrounded by family, at the age of 83.

He was born in Portsmouth, N.H., on May 22, 1921, the son of Tony and Rose (Rizzo) Fiandaca and was a 1939 graduate of Portsmouth High School. He served several years in the U.S. Navy aboard a LST during World War II. He hosted the first shipmate’s reunion for his crew.

He worked for 32 years as a ship fitter at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. Joe and his wife of 54 years, Arlene (Coulter) Fiandaca, have owned and operated Jolene’s Motor Court on York Beach for 53 years.

He was predeceased by his parents; a brother, Michael and two grandchildren, Phillip and Michael.

He was a communicant and usher of St. Christopher-by-the-Sea Church.

Survivors include his wife, Arlene Fiandaca; two sisters, Sadie and Ann; four daughters, Donna Ensell of Olean, N.Y., Diane Connors of Lakeland, Fla., Pamela Given of Biddeford and Sharon Robinson of York and one son, Joseph "Jay" Fiandaca Jr. of York. He also leaves behind nine grandchildren, Ann Marie, Pam, Jocelyn, Shelby, Angela, Brett, Amanda, Garrett and Kara; several great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Joe will be remembered for his relentless rhymes, jokes and contagious laughter. He was a child all his life in heart, soul and spirit. May his ability to enjoy each day and relish in the beauty of little things live on in those who love him.

A funeral Mass was held on Monday, Nov. 15, at St. Christopher Church, on York Street. In lieu of flowers, loved ones may make donations in Joe’s name to the Hospice of Southern Maine, 901 Washington Ave., Suite 104, Portland, Maine 04103.

Helen Palmer Gove

PORTSMOUTH, N.H. -Helen Palmer Gove, 89, of Portsmouth, N.H., formerly a longtime resident of York, died on Friday, Nov. 5, 2004, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Mrs. Gove was born in Portsmouth, N.H., on Jan. 11, 1915, the daughter of Ira N. and Sarah (Morrison) Brown. She attended local schools and graduated from Portsmouth High School.

She met and married her husband, Frederick L. Gove Jr., and together they made their home in York. They retired to Northport, Fla., where they spent 13 years together until Frederick’s death in 1997. When her husband died, Mrs. Gove returned to the Seacoast and became a family member of SunBridge Care in Portsmouth, where she was so thankful for the loving care and support she received from the staff. She was employed for many years at the Morley Button Company in Portsmouth.

Mrs. Gove was an active member of the Middle Street Baptist Church, serving as assistant Sunday school superintendent. She continued her relationship with the church when it moved to Kittery, where it is now the Church at Spruce Creek.

Her loving family survives her. They include her two sons, Richard Gove and his wife, Phyllis, of Palm Bay, Fla., and Edwin and Rebecca Gove of Cape Neddick; three grandchildren, Megan Ong, Maura Mask and Patricia Gove; and four great grandchildren.

A graveside service will be announced at a later date. Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Natalie A. Flynn

YORK - Natalie A. Flynn, 93, died on Saturday, Nov. 13, 2004.

She was born in Newton, Mass., Aug. 5, 1911. Mrs. Flynn was a graduate of Newton High School, where she was a star athlete in the early 1930s and set numerous national track and field records.

She moved to York Harbor, in 1950 and became a local artist and a member of the York Art Association. Mrs. Flynn graduated from the University of New Hampshire with an associate’s degree in 1974. She was a devoted parishioner of St. Christopher’s Church and member of the Seacoast Choir.

She was the beloved wife of the late Robert H. Flynn. She is survived by three sisters, Mary Birmingham of Waltham, Mass., Joan Bradford of Hull, Mass., and Gertrude Shelley of Boston. Mrs. Flynn is the loving mother of Martha Pleshaw of Washington, D.C., Kathleen McCarthy of Cambridge, Mass., and Patricia Flynn of Newton, Mass.; and grandmother to seven grandchildren.

Visiting hours at Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 17 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral Mass at St. Christopher’s Church, 4 Barrel Lane, York on Thursday, Nov. 18, at 9:30 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to St. Christopher’s Church or the American Cancer Society(800) 227-2345.

Norma Woodward Joslyn

CENTER BARNSTEAD, N.H. - Norma Woodward (Trafton) Joslyn, 79, died Friday, Nov. 12, 2004, at Frisbie Memorial Hospital in Rochester, N.H.

She was born in York on Jan. 25, 1925, the daughter of Russell E. and Augusta (Woodward) Trafton. She was a 1942 graduate of York High School. She worked for 38 years at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

Norma had a great passion for flowers, plants and her husband’s photography. She was known for her desire to keep her Christmas tree displayed until July.

She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Lewis Joslyn of Center Barnstead, N.H.; her son, Glenn Joslyn and his wife Beverly, of Center Barnstead, N.H.; a granddaughter, Angela Ambrose and her husband, Raymond, of Concord, N.H; her brother, Chester Trafton of York; her sister, Harriet Lawry of York; and many nieces and nephews.

A graveside service was held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the First Parish Cemetery, York Street. In lieu of flowers, donations in her name may be made to the American Cancer Society, Northeast Division, 1 Main St., Suite 300, Topsham, Maine, 04086 or the American Heart Association, Northeast Affiliate, 20 Speen St., Framingham, Mass. 01701. Arrangements by the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York.

Daniel J. McGonicle Sr.

YORK BEACH - Daniel J. McGonigle Sr., 83, of York Beach, died on Thursday, Nov. 11, 2004, at York Hospital surrounded by his family.

He was born in Boston, on Oct. 5, 1921, the son of James and Elizabeth McGonigle.

A graduate of Rindge Technical High School, he married in 1945 and shortly thereafter was inducted into the U.S. Army.

After serving in Germany during World War II, Dan began a long and varied career at MIT, Lincoln Lab in Cambridge, Mass. For a number of years he was employed at RCA and Burroughs Corp. in the design and manufacturing of computers. This provided him the opportunity for extensive travel to the Netherlands and South America. Later, he was a managing partner in a small company providing automobile custom audio and alarm systems.

Before retirement, he designed the reconstruction of the family cottage into the home that he and his wife have enjoyed for the past 20 years.

He truly enjoyed his workshop. He always was active in one or more projects. He will be remembered for his humor and generous nature. Providing assistance to anyone who needed it, he always had a smile on his face and a song in his heart (often even if he didn’t know the words!).

For a number of years, he provided assistance to the community in numerous ways: as a volunteer to York Hospital he transported patients and delivered meals, he constructed York Days Parade floats and could always be counted on to be "Mr Fix It."

As a dedicated parishioner of St. Christopher–by–the-Sea Church, he gave his considerable talents in many ways. He worked as an usher, a "Mr. Fix It," provided help during the Craft Fair and many other church functions and programs. He was a long-standing member of the Knights of Columbus. In 1997, he was presented "The Marty Ulan Citizenship Award" in recognition of his numerous contributions and services to the York Beach community by the Rotary Club of Maine.

He was loved by everyone that met him and he will be deeply missed.

He was predeceased by his parents and five brothers, George, James, Raymond, Joseph and William.

Survivors include his wife, Catherine (Egan) McGonigle; two sisters, Elizabeth McQueen of Inverness, Fla., and Gertrude Boudreau of Bedford, Mass.; seven children, James McGonigle and his wife, Diane, of Wakefield, Mass., Cathy Hicks and her husband, Bill, of Sheffield Lake, Ohio, Betty VanEtten and her husband, Dean, of Napanoch, N.Y., Mary Ebel and her husband, Brad, of Glasco N.Y., Carol Manfro and her husband, Jim, of Athens, N.Y., Terri Bartosik and her husband, Jim, of Malden, N.Y., and Daniel McGonigle Jr. of Seattle, Wash.; 20 grandchildren, James, Laureen and Kevin McGonigle; Daniel, Ericka, Andrew and Samantha Hicks; Michael, Jonathan and Timothy VanEtten; Brianne and Amanda Ebel; Crista, Jamie and Cassandra Manfro; Christopher and Catherine Craft; James and Elizabeth Bartosik; and Aidan McGonigle; five great grandchildren, Chase and Abigail McGonigle, Emma Hicks and Brian and Hannah Mills.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Tuesday in St. Christopher Church, on York St. Interment will be private. Arrangements by the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York. Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to York Hospital, 15 Hospital Drive, York, Maine 03909.

Ruth Boyan Moebus

YORK - Ruth Boyan Moebus, 86, formerly of 60 Pleasant Point Drive, Portsmouth, N.H. and the Ocean House at Short Sands, York Beach, died peacefully Thursday, Nov. 11, 2004 at the Harbor Home in York Harbor.

She was born and raised in Portsmouth, N.H. and graduated with the Class of 1936 from Portsmouth High School.

She married Robert Moebus of New York in 1945. Together they developed Pleasant Point Drive in Portsmouth and raised their daughter, Robin, whom they dearly loved and supported till the day they died.

Ruth was involved in many women’s clubs in Portsmouth. She was past president of the Portsmouth Hospital Guild, past president of the Graffort Club and a lifetime member of the Portsmouth Yacht Club, where she and Bob made many wonderful friends and memories. In earlier years she loved her Friday bridge games with "the girls".

She was predeceased by her husband, Bob, who died in 2000; her sister, Rosmerld Boyan and her brothers, Thomas and Paul Boyan.

Ruth is survived by her daughter, Robin Moebus Crosby and her husband, Bob, of York; two brothers, Albert and his wife, Iris Boyan, of Arizona and William and Margaret Boyan of Florida; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial Mass was celebrated Tuesday in St. Christopher’s Church, York. Interment followed in Calvary Cemetery, Portsmouth, N.H. Memorial donations may be made to the Harbor Home Activities Fund, 6 Norwood Farms Road, York 03909. Arrangements by the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, York.

Gladys M. Shum

YORK - Gladys McCoubrey Shum, 96, died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2004, at Sentry Hill, in York Harbor. She previously resided on Agamenticus Road in Cape Neddick.

She was born Sept. 16, 1908 in Ballyclare, Northern Ireland, the third daughter of Samuel G. and Jenny MeWhirter McCoubrey. In 1912, shortly after the loss of the Titanic, she sailed along with her mother and sister to Canada where they joined her father who was involved in the establishment of a paper mill. She recalled the cabin stewardess pointing out icebergs during the ship’s passage.

She spent her early years in Iroquois Falls, Ontario, 150 miles south of Hudson’s Bay. Later, her family moved to Three Rivers, Quebec. In 1937, she went to Boston where she was employed at the Moore & Summers Insurance Company. There, she met Alden F. Shum. They were married Feb. 2, 1937 in York Village. She became a naturalized American citizen in 1940.

In 1942, she and her husband bought an old farm on Agamenticus Road, one mile from Ogunquit Village. At the time she bemoaned the fact that it was so far out of town. Over the years they restored the early-1800s farmhouse, and before the installation of plumbing, she often bathed in the summertime under the waterfall on the nearby Josias River.

Over the past 60 years she was involved in many community activities. She was a member of the Old York Garden Club, the Wells-Ogunquit Historical Society, the Ogunquit Women’s Club and the York Hospital Auxiliary. She logged more than 700 hours as a volunteer at York Hospital. She was one of the first nurse’s aides at York Hospital.

For 40 years she was associated in various capacities with the Ogunquit Memorial Library. She retired as a librarian at 80 years of age.

She enjoyed traveling and going to musical concerts with her dear friends. She hooked rugs, one of which won an award at the Eastern States Exposition. She was especially proud of her beautiful flower gardens. She will be remembered as a kind and gentle woman, truly one of the good ones.

She is survived by a nephew, Brian D. McCoubrey, of Wakefield, Mass.; a niece, Barbara H. Grover, of Cape Neddick; and many great nephews and nieces. She entrusted her care in her 90s to her great nephew Michael and his wife, Patricia Weare, of Cape Neddick. She was predeceased by her husband, who died in 1979, and her siblings Margaret, Mary and David.

There will be no visiting hours.

A memorial service was held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 13 at St. George’s Episcopal Church in York Harbor.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Ogunquit Memorial Library, P.O. Box 753, Ogunquit, Maine 03907.
