Naomi Burton Stone

PORTSMOUTH, N.H. - Naomi Burton Stone, 93, died Tuesday, Nov. 16, 2004, at the Mark Wentworth Home in Portsmouth.

She was born in England on March 15, 1911, the youngest of seven children born to Claude and Katherine (Dell) Burton.

After working in London for the Curtis Brown Ltd. Literary Agency in the 1930s, she moved to New York City to open an office for her employer in 1939. She married Melville E. "Ned" Stone in 1951 and remained a literary agent at Curtis Brown. During that period, she represented many authors, including Ian Fleming, Thomas Merton and Ogden Nash. Her deep friendship with Thomas Merton led her to serve as one of his literary executors after his untimely death in 1968.

In the early 1960s, she and her husband built a house on Western Point next to Ned’s aunt, Valentine Hollingsworth, and made York Harbor their permanent home. Naomi became an editor at Doubleday, commuting to New York three days a week while continuing to work on manuscripts at home. She retired in 1971, but she kept up an active correspondence, maintaining her role as Merton’s literary executor and working as a freelance editor. She was the author of numerous books and articles, including a memoir titled "More Than Sentinels."

Throughout her life, she was active in church life, with a deep commitment to the union of all Christians.

After her husband’s death, she moved to the Mark Wentworth Home and lived there happily for more than 10 years. She was well known for her bright spirit, warm personality and charitable endeavors.

She is survived by six nieces and nephews in England; her stepdaughter, Susanna Stone Doyle of New York City; eight American step-grandchildren; 11 stepgreat-grandchildren; as well as many loving friends, such as Diane Kleist of York.

A memorial service in honor of Naomi’s life will be held on Dec. 13 at 11:30 a.m. at St. George’s Church in York Harbor.

Anyone wishing to make a memorial contribution may contact the Mount Ireneaus Franciscan Retreat, P.O. Box 100, West Clarksville, NY 14786. This is a retreat center named for a friend of Thomas Merton’s and run by a friend of Naomi’s.
