Josephine L. "Dolly" (Lawrence) Brooks

MALDEN, Mass. - Josephine "Dolly" (Lawrence) Brooks, 77, of Arch Street, died on Thursday, Jan. 6, 2005, at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. She was the wife of the late George Brooks.

Raised in Chelsea, Mass., she was the daughter of the late James and Josephine (Connors) Lawrence. Mrs. Brooks was a graduate of Chelsea High School and was employed as a telephone operator with New England Telephone for more than 45 years before her retirement. She lived in Everett, Mass., before moving to Malden, Mass., more than 30 years ago.

She leaves one daughter, Andrea Brooks of Malden, Mass.; three sisters, Pearl Brennan of Winthrop, Mass., Bernice Gordon of Revere, Mass., Virginia Resca of York Beach; two brothers, Frederick Lawrence of California and Donald Lawrence of South Yarmouth, Mass.

She was also the sister of the late Viola Anderson and Herbert Lawrence.

The funeral Mass was held at St. Anthony’s Church, 250 Revere St., Revere, Mass., on Monday, Jan. 10 . Entombment will be in Holy Cross Mausoleum, Malden, Mass.

Donations in her memory may be made to the American Cancer Society or the American Lung Association of Massachusetts.

David Casey

CAPE NEDDICK - David Casey, 63, of 20 Pine Mountain Road, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2005, at York Hospital, with his wife and all of his children at his side.

He was born on Jan. 4, 1942 in Boston, the son of John J. and Evelyn (Byron) Casey and was a 1959 graduate of St. Columbkille High School of Brighton. He served in the U.S. Air Force for four years during the Vietnam War. He received a bachelor of education degree from Bridgewater State College and a degree in Lay Ministry from St. Hyacinth College in Granby, Mass.

He was a special education teacher for grades three through six at Sheffield School in Turners Falls, Mass., retiring in 1995 after 26 years of service.

Very active in his community, he was a 20-year member of Montague Lodge of Elks No. 2525 of Turners Falls and ran the Flag Day program for the Turners Falls community and schools.

He moved to Cape Neddick in 1996 and was a communicant of St. Christopher by the Sea Church. He continued his community involvement, becoming a volunteer for Hospice of York and worked in the dietary department at Sentry Hill’s Alzheimers Unit for four years where he continued his ministry to the patients and their families. He also was an avid reader and enjoyed playing the piano, bird watching and gardening.

He was predeceased by his brother, Richard Casey, who died in 2003.

Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Marie Ann (Perry) Casey of Cape Neddick; two sons, David Casey and his wife Brigitte of Cumberland, R.I., and William Casey of York; a daughter, Evelyn Casey of Newburyport, Mass.; a grandson, Aidan David Casey of Cumberland, R.I.; two brothers, John Casey and his wife, Connie of Stoneham, Mass., and Dennis Casey and his wife, Kathy of Texas; one sister-in-law, Barbara Casey of Waltham, Mass., and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass will be held at 9:30 a.m., Thursday, in St. Christopher’s Church on York St. Visiting hours will be held Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Rd., in York. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of York, 15 Hospital Drive, York, Maine, 03909.

Eulalie Hutchins Costa

VERO BEACH, Fla. - Eulalie Hutchins Costa, 95, of Vero Beach died at home on Monday, Jan. 3, 2005.

Born Oct. 9, 1909 in Ogunquit, she was the daughter of Warren and Maude Hutchins of Ogunquit.

She was predeceased by her husband, Ralph Costa.

She first worked at York County Trust Bank - the first bank in Ogunquit. She played piano at the Ogunquit Methodist Church and for dances at the town hall, as well as at the Leavitt Theatre during silent movie days.

She is survived by three children, Jean Miller, Elizabeth Clarke and Duane Costa; one sister, Blanche Hutchins Staples of Ogunquit; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A memorial will be held in Vero Beach, Fla., on Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the music department of her church, which may be sent to Elizabeth Clark, 1631 4th Court, Vero Beach, Fla., 32960.

James S. Downing

DURHAM, Conn. - James S. Downing, 65, of Haddam Quarter Road, Durham, Conn., and Drake Island, Maine, husband of Lenore (Fresen) Downing, died Sunday, Jan. 9 at Middlesex Hospital in Middletown, Conn.

Born in Somerville, Mass., he was the son of the late John J. and Dorothy (Andersen) Downing.

Mr. Downing lived in Durham since 1965, and was a former member of the Connecticut National Guard. He was a graduate of Wentworth Institute, and had been employed by Pratt & Whitney Aircraft for 35 years. He was a member of the Notre Dame Church in Durham, the Knights of Columbus, the Elks Club, the Durham Fair Association, the Laudholm Farm Trust, the Connecticut Coordinating Committee for the Handicapped and the National Spinal Cord Injury Association.

Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, Scott S. Downing and his wife, Azita, of Cambridge, Mass., and Richard J. Downing and his wife, Susan, of Essex, Vt.; one brother, Joseph E. Downing, who’s on assignment in Kenya, Africa; one sister, Mary C. Richard and her husband, Jean Paul, of Virginia Beach, Va.; and three grandchildren, Megan, Sean and Kiyan.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at Notre Dame Church where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Darius Dudzik, pastor. Interment will be in Mica Hill Cemetery, in Durham, Conn.

Friends may call at the Doolittle Funeral Home, 14 Old Church St., Middletown, Conn., on Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m., and are invited to send a message of condolence to the family at www.doolittlefuneralservice.com. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the Durham Volunteer Ambulance Corps., P.O. Box 207, Durham, Conn., 06422, or the charity of the donor’s choice.

Jean M. French

STONEHAM, Mass. - Jean M. (Gordon) French, 87, of Stoneham, Mass., formerly of York and Watertown, Mass., died Thursday, Jan. 6, at the Life Care Center of Stoneham, Mass. She was the beloved wife of the late Richard G. French.

She was born in Watertown, Mass., on Aug. 20, l9l7, the daughter of the Arthur A. and Vera (Nason) Gordon. She was a graduate of Watertown High School and Fisher Business School. She served her country in World War II as a WAVE in the U.S. Navy.

After retiring from Raytheon Co., she moved to York where she was a member of St. George’s Episcopal Church and the York Golf and Tennis Club. She also volunteered at the York Hospital and the YCSA Thrift Shop.

She was the devoted mother of Marjorie J. Koles and her husband, Anthony, of Melrose, Mass., and John R. French and his wife, Linda, of Landis, N.C. She was the loving grandmother of Scott and Jeanne Koles of Stoneham, Mass., Suzanne (Koles) and Jason Reid of Melrose, Mass., Michelle (French) and Rob Harton of Charlotte, N.C., and Michael French of Landis, N.C. She was the sister of Phyllis Layton, Phillips Gordon, Joyce Emanuelson, John Gordon and Robert Gordon.

A memorial service will be held in the spring. In lieu of flowers, donations in Jean’s memory may be made to the Joslin Diabetes Center, One Joslin Center, Boston, Mass., 02215 or a charity of your choice. Arrangements by the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home of York.

Wilfrid F. Greenwood

YORK - Wilfrid F. Greenwood, 86, of York, died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2005, at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

He was born on Oct. 29, 1918 in White Plains, N.Y., the son of Wilfrid L. and Nina M. (Weinburg) Greenwood. He was a graduate of Loomis and Trinity College. Wilfrid served his country in the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers during World War II. During his time in the Army, he met his future wife, Muriel Gluth.

He worked as a civil engineer for Citgo Petroleum and at age 55 started Greenwood Construction Corp., where he worked until his recent illness. He enjoyed organic gardening, traveling and giving generously to numerous charities. He was predeceased by his wife Muriel, of 53 years, his sister, Margaret Leitch, and his great-granddaughter, Camille. Wilfrid is survived by three sons, Mark Greenwood of Lee, N.H.; Dr. Kent S. Greenwood of Lunenburg, Mass. and Ross L. Greenwood of Tennessee; and one daughter, Dr. Donna Greenwood of Scarborough, Maine; as well as 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held Tuesday, Jan. 11, at St. George’s Episcopal Church, in York. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the York Public Library, 15 Long Sands Road, York, Maine, 03909. Arrangements are by the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, York

Kenneth C. "Ozzie" Hicks

YORK BEACH - Kenneth C. "Ozzie" Hicks, 78, of York Beach, died Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2004, at York Hospital after a long illness. He was the husband of Elvira "Veda" Hicks.

He was born in Ashland, Mass., the son of the late Kenneth and Eunice (Slater) Hicks, and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. A local union member, Mr. Hicks was employed as a heavy equipment operator for various area construction companies before his retirement. He was a resident of Maynard, Mass., before moving to York Beach several years ago.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Jeffrey Hicks of York Beach; two granddaughters, Shannon and Haeli; two sisters, Evelyn Feeley and Mabel Galoni, both of Florida; and many nieces and nephews. He was the father of the late Clifford Hicks.

Relatives and friends were invited to visiting hours on Sunday, Dec. 26, with funeral services on Monday, Dec. 27 at the Acton Funeral Home in Acton, Mass. Burial was in St. Bridget’s cemetery in Maynard, Mass.

Donald W. Nichols

YORK - Donald W. Nichols, 88, of Ridge Road in York, died on Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2005, at Varney Crossing in North Berwick.

Born in Presque Isle, Maine, on May 5, 1916, Mr. Nichols attended schools in Richmond after moving there as a young child with his family. Mr. Nichols continued to reside in Richmond, working as a union carpenter and starting his family. He became a journeyman shipfitter at the South Portland Shipyard.

In 1960, he moved with his family to York where he worked as a self-employed carpenter for many years, for Charles Harding and Mason Newick of York Harbor. In the late 1970s, he began a career with the state of Maine as a construction liaison, working on many school building projects throughout the state.

Mr. Nichols enjoyed his association with the national, Maine state and Kittery Grange No. 395.

During his time in Richmond, he was a member of the Richmond Baptist Church and upon moving to York formed a relationship with the Cape Neddick Baptist Church.

He was an avid amateur geologist, possessing a vast knowledge of mines throughout the state of Maine and beyond. He enjoyed sharing this knowledge and his discoveries with his family.

His first love was undoubtedly his family. He is survived by his daughters, Donna Jean Anderson of Richmond, Va., and Gail Nichols of York Beach; a sister, Angelia "Jean" Despres; four grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wives, Shirley (Hewitt) Nichols who died in 1942 and Alice L. (Greenlaw) Nichols who predeceased him in 1985; a daughter, Linda Lee Nichols; and his long-time companion Eleanor Perkins.

Funeral services will be private, with burial in First Parish cemetery in York. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in his memory to Hospice of York, Hospital Drive in York or The National Association of the Deaf, 814 Thayer Ave., Silver Springs, Md., 20910.

Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, in Kittery.

Robert E. Bornemann

YORK HARBOR - Robert E. Bornemann, 79, of 1A Roaring Rock Point, died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2005, at York Hospital after a long illness.

He was born in Boston on July 26, 1925 and was a graduate of Mechanic Arts High School in Boston. He had served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He had worked for New England Telephone for more than 38 years, retiring in 1985 as a supervisor in the Boston office and was a member of the Telephone Pioneers.

He had formerly lived in Norwood, Mass., for 21 years and Duxbury, Mass., for 17 years before moving to York. He wintered in Clearwater, Fla., for several years.

He was a member of the First Parish Congregational Church of York and was a well-known York Hospital Volunteer since 1991. He was a former member of the Duxbury Businessmen’s Club. He was an avid tennis player and a member of the York Golf and Tennis Club and the Roger-Ramsdell American Legion Post 56 of York.

He was predeceased by his wife, Mary E. (Moller) Bornemann, who died in 1991 and by a sister, Margaret Vogler.

Survivors include a son, Ronald A. Bornemann and his wife, Patricia of Taunton, Mass.; two grandsons, Ronald Bornemann, Jr. and Robert E. Bornemann II; two great-grandchildren, Tyler and Hope Bornemann; a brother, Arthur Bornemann of Quincy, Mass.; a sister, Louise Merker of Coranado, Calif., and several nieces and nephews and many local friends who were like family.

A memorial service was held at the First Parish Congregational Church, on York Street. Memorial donations may be made to the York Hospital Building Fund, 15 Hospital Drive, York, Maine 03909 or the First Parish Church, 180 York St., York, 03909. Arrangements by the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home of York.

Enrico Coletti

YORK - Enrico Coletti, 84, died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2005, at York Hospital.

Originally from Newton, Mass., He was born March 15, 1921. He graduated from Newton High School and joined the U.S. Coast Guard, serving during World War II from 1942 to 1945 in the South Pacific.

A lifelong craftsman, he worked in construction and for the Newton Public Schools custodial staff. He moved to York in the 1960s when he purchased and ran the Sand Dollar restaurant at York Beach through the 1970s. As he approached retirement, he performed carpentry and maintenance for local hotel establishments. He was a lifelong, avid golfer, carpenter and gardener.

He was predeceased by his parents, the late Donato and Domenica (Cellucci), both of whom were born in Italy, and siblings, the late Josephine Cardarelli, Laura Chinigo, Danny and Anthony Coletti, Ann Leone, Geraldine Sellars, and Josephine Whalen.

He is survived by his siblings, Betty Bullwinkle of Waltham, Mass., Nina Howe of Sun City, Ariz., Luci Pellegrini and Mary Walsh, both of Quincy, Mass., and Edward Coletti of Fullerton, Calif. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Burial was private, arrangements by the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home in York.

John A. ‘Jack’ DePerrio

YORK - John A. "Jack" DePerrio, 58, husband of Gail (Young) DePerrio of Fall Mill Road died Friday, Jan. 14, 2005, at York Hospital.

He was born in York on Dec. 23, 1946, the son of Anthony and Dorothy (Kelly) DePerrio.

He was a 1966 graduate of York High School and he served his country as a U.S. Marine during the Vietnam conflict.

He worked at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for many years and as a custodian at the York High School for more than 10 years.

He owned and operated his own saw mill at his residence and was an avid lover of the woodlands. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially with his two grandchildren, David and Juliana.

Survivors include his wife, Gail S. (Young) DePerrio of York; a son, Timothy J. and his wife, Kristen DePerrio, of York; two brothers, Frank DePerrio of York and Arthur DePerrio of Cape Neddick; two sisters, Louise Barrett of Roslindale, Mass., and Patricia Poole of Sebago Lake, Maine; and two grandchildren, David and Juliana DePerrio of York.

Funeral arrangements are by the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road. York. Interment was in First Parish Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to either the York Volunteer Ambulance Association, P.O. Box 238, York, Maine 03909 or to a charity of one’s choice.
