Jack was born in Norfolk, Va., on April 22, 1930, to John Sr. and Amelia (Wyman) Hannigan. After extensive military travel with his family as a young boy, his parents settled in York, Maine, and then moved to Kittery, where Jack graduated from R.W. Traip Academy with the Class of 1950. He played football under the great coach Jack Cannell and was given the nickname "Moose."

He joined the U.S. Navy serving as a gunners mate 1st class aboard the U.S.S. Witek and the U.S.S. Richard C. Kraus. After taking a short break as a civilian, he joined the United States Air Force serving more than 20 years. He served in Wyoming, Okinawa, the Philippines, Korea, Vietnam, South Carolina, Bangor, Maine, and Alaska. He truly enjoyed serving his country and the adventures his service brought him.

After retiring in Alaska, his desire to bring his wife and children closer to their grandparents and other relatives brought him to Eliot, where they settled and raised their family.

He became very involved with his community, especially the Eliot Little League, where he enjoyed making hand-carved plaques for all the players who scored home runs, and then taking them to Fenway Park to have them autographed by the Boston Red Sox players.

His involvement with community affairs and service to his community earned him the Eliot Citizen of the Year in 1991. Being awarded the Fabyan Drake Award was certainly a highlight for him, as was being nominated for his work with the Little League, his tremendous work with the Eliot American Legion Post 188. Many other organizations also reaped the benefits of the service he so willingly offered to others in need in his community, like thawing frozen pipes, a ride to the hospital or many other acts of kindness.

He was very active in veteran affairs. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion. His Post was No. 123 in Kezar Falls, Maine. In 1997, Jack was named Legionnaire of the Year for the state of Maine, an award offered and made for him, and which continues to be offered to a deserving legionnaire each year. He served as post commander of the Eliot American Legion Post No. 188 for three years, county commander for two years, district commander for a year, assistant to the sergeant at arms for the Department of Maine for many years and Aide to the Department Commander from 1997 to 1998.

An avid outdoorsman, Jack would patiently wait out the winter, awaiting the day he could get his fishing boat in the water for the season. He enjoyed fishing at West Grand Lake and Sebago. Many times when he was at West Grand the first week in May he would be pushing the ice and enjoying every minute of it.

His first love was his dear wife, Elinor, his wife for more than 50 years, as well as his children and grandchildren whom he adored. Besides his loving wife, he is survived by his sons, John and his wife, Diane, and John IV; his granddaughter Celia and her husband, Stephen Taylor; a great grandson, William; his brother, Harry; neice and nephew, Brian and Julie and their children; his sister, Amelia and her husband, Herbert Register, and their children; his youngest sister, Mary and her husband, Danny Smith, and their children; and his cat, Hannibal, who flew all the way from Texas when he was a kitten to come to Maine.

As a lasting tribute to Jack, a memorial scholarship in his name has been created and the recipient will be chosen from those submitting a paper on patriotism, a cause championed by Jack his entire life.

A memorial service celebrating his life will be held on Saturday March 26, 2005, at the First Congregational Church in Eliot, followed by a time of refreshment and sharing in the church parish hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Jack Hannigan Memorial Scholarship Fund c/o Ocean National Bank, 17 Walker St., Kittery, Maine, 03904.
