Lucy H. Ackerman

YORK BEACH - Lucy H. "Lou" Ackerman, 78, of Talpey Avenue, died Monday, May 9, 2005, at York Hospital.

She was born on Oct. 19, 1926, in Fitchburg, Mass., the daughter of Frank W. and Lesta (Brewer) Davis. She was a graduate of Leominster High School, the class of 1944.

She was a member of the Congregational Church of Christ in Leominster, Mass., and of the Union Congregational Church of York Beach. She was also a past member of the VFW Auxiliary, Eastern Star-Temple Chapter 45, and the York Elks Post 2788. Her three favorite pastimes were crossword puzzles, bowling and reading books.

She was the widow of Robert E. Ackerman, who died Feb. 1, 2000.

She is survived by her daughter, Susan Kay Vautour and her husband, Gary, of Leominster, Mass.; two sons, Edward George Wilkinson and his wife, Patricia, of Leominster, Mass., and Randy Jay Wilkinson and his wife, Lisa, of Balsam Lake, N.Y.; a stepson, Timothy A. Ackerman and his wife, Edith, of Melrose, Mass.; a step-daughter, Melissa Ackerman of Amherst, Va.; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m, on Thursday, May 12 at Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road in York. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in her name may be made to a local animal shelter or to your favorite charity.

Mary McIntire Davis

YORK - Mary McIntire Davis, 88, a lifelong York resident, died Dec. 7, 2004, at her home.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 20, 2005, in the First Parish Church in York. Burial will be private in the First Parish cemetery in York. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the York Land Trust, P.O. Box 1241, York Harbor, Maine, 03911. Arrangements by the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, York.

Gloria E. d’Entremont

YORK - Gloria E. d’Entremont, 82, of Old Post Road, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2005, at Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford.

A graveside service will be held at 11:30 a.m., Thursday, May 19, at First Parish cemetery on York Street in York. Memorial donations may be made to the Animal Welfare Society of Kennebunk, P.O. Box 43, West Kennebunk, Maine, 04090. Arrangements are by Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home in York.

Doris Lunt

SARASOTA, Fla. - Doris P. Lunt, 87, of Sarasota, Fla., died Monday, May 2, 2005.

She was born in Haverhill, Mass., on Feb. 19, 1918.

She was a bookkeeper at Leighton Chevrolet for 14 years and at York Hospital until her retirement in 1983.

She is survived by her husband, Carl L. Lunt, and cousins, Robert Huse, Priscilla Anthony, and Dorothy Blanchard, all from Massachusetts.

She is to be cremated in Sarasota and ashes are to be interred at Lunt Family lot in the First Parish cemetery in York Village in the near future.

There will be no service or flowers. Donations may be made to the American Legion Auxiliary Post No. 56 in York if so desired in her name.

Delbert Clayton Sowerby, M.D.

REDDING, Calif. - Dr. Del Sowerby, 70, of Redding, Calif., died Thursday, April 21, 2005.

He was born in Boiestown, New Brunswick, Canada, on July 22, 1934. His parents, Mrs. Vera May Sowerby and Thomas Young Sowerby, brought him to York Harbor shortly thereafter.

He grew up in York and attended York Grammar School and York High School. He then attended The University of New Hampshire in Durham, N.H., where he received his Bachelor of Science degree. After that, he went to Chicago where he graduated from the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine and The University of California at Irvine. He completed his internship at USC and his Anesthesia Residency at UCLA.

He was a fellow of the American Academy of Pain Management, and a member of American Physician Executives. During his years of practice in anesthesiology and pain management, he served three terms as chief of staff at The Redding Medical Center and as chief of anesthesia as well as on the board of directors at The Redding Medical Center and The Patient’s Hospital of Redding.

He moved his pain management practice to Patient’s Hospital in 1994, and was joined in practice in 2000 by Dr. Pauly Carroll and his daughter, Dr. Julie Sowerby.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Helen Dodd Sowerby, and their children, Thomas, Julie, Michael and James, their families; his brothers, Doyle, David and Dwight and their families; and his first cousin, John. His youngest brother, Daniel, died in 2003. There are numerous nieces, nephews and cousins on both coasts, the Midwest and in Canada.

Del brightened our world for every one of his 70 years and his genuine and mischievous smile will never be forgotten. He talked God’s talk and he walked God’s walk and he blessed every person he met abundantly.

Del served on the board of directors of the Bethel Pentecostal Church in Redding and was a well-known speaker in The Full Gospel Businessmen’s Association, serving as a past president of the Redding Chapter. He always strove to live the Christian ideals in which he so strongly believed.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the "Dr. Del Sowerby’s Relay for Life Team." Call Lori Wenham at (530) 225-8700, Bethel Church and/or Faith Christian Fellowship Church.

Enoch S. Szczepanek

YORK - Enoch S. Szczepanek, 96, of Mariner Way in York Beach, formerly of Worcester, Mass., died Saturday, May 7, 2005, at the York Hospital.

He was born in Adrian, Pa., the son of Adam and Josephine Szczepanek, and lived in Poland for several of his early years. Enoch was the youngest of three children and was predeceased by a brother, Walter and a sister, Bertha Konczanin.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps in Nicaragua and Haiti in the mid-1920s. He worked at the Rutland Veterans Hospital and retired from the Norton Company in Worcester after more than 30 years. He was truly a jack of all trades and loved fishing, reading, storytelling, family poker and a good joke. His jokes were always the funniest. Baci and Dziadzi’s cottage, just up from Long Sands Beach, was a wonderful gathering place for family and friends.

He was the beloved husband of the late Sophie (Ruchala); devoted father of Barbara Nicholson and her husband, John, of York, and the late Charles Szczepanek; and father-in-law of Eleanor Dembitsky of Billerica, Mass., and the late Francis (Lemanski) Szczepanek. He was also predeceased by one grandson, Paul Szczepanek; and one grandson-in-law, Michael Demers; and is survived by 10 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral will take place on Wednesday, May 11 at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Cenzehowa, 34 Ward St., Worcester, Mass., followed by a graveside service at Notre Dame Cemetery, 162 Webster St, Worcester. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, remembrances would be appreciated to the York Hospital Friendraising, 15 Hospital Drive, York, Maine, 03909.

Sherree Warner Caret

Kittery - Sherree Ann Warner Caret, 62, of Kittery, died Monday, April 4, 2005, at Harbor Home in York Harbor.

She was the wife of John E. Caret of Kittery, Maine. Sherree was the daughter of Roberta F. Dunston and the late Hugh Dunston of Cape Neddick. She is the sister of Craig F. Dunston of Newton, Mass., and niece of Marie L. Murray of Staunton, Va. She leaves many cousins in Georgia, Mississippi and Virginia.

She was a cum laude graduate of the New Hampshire School for Lifelong Learning at the University of New Hampshire. She was the administrator of the Village Learning Center in York and she worked for Compo Industries in Waltham, Mass., for many years.

She was also an accountant for Abenaqui Carriers of New Hampshire.

She and her dog, Willy, were great walkers and were often seen walking in York and Kittery. She loved to paint seascapes and still life. Before her illness, she enjoyed setting up her easel at Fort Foster or Cape Neddick.

A memorial service was held last week at Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road in York.

Rose Marie Generazzo

YORK - Rose Marie Generazzo, 83, wife of the late John A. Generazzo, of 5 Green Acre Drive, formerly of Saugus, Mass., died Monday, April 4, 2005, at York Hospital after a long illness.

Born in Everett, Mass., on Aug. 24, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Raphael and Theresa Ragucci.

She loved to cook and bake for her family and friends. She was an avid traveler but she truly enjoyed spending time with her family.

The family gratefully acknowledges the care given to her by Dr. Michael Major and all of the staff who contributed to her care at York Hospital.

Family members include two daughters, Florence Potito and her husband, Kenneth, of York, and Donna Nicolo and her late husband, Nicholas, of York; one son, John M. Generazzo and his wife, Arlene, of Salisbury, N.C.; four grandchildren, Kenneth Potito and his wife, Suzan, of York, Kristin Lary and her husband, Don, of Kennebunk, Joel Nicolo and his wife, Trish, of Orlando, Fla., and John Generazzo and his wife, Jill, of Wakefield, Mass.; five greatgrandchildren, Jacob and Benjamin Lary, Kali and Elizabeth Potito and Payton Nicolo.

Calling hours were held at Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home in York and a Mass of Christian burial was held last week in St. Margaret’s Church, 431 Lincoln Ave., Saugus, Mass. Interment will be in Riverside cemetery in Saugus.

Edward C. Leitz

YORK - Edward C. Leitz, 86, died on Tuesday, April 5, 2005, at his home in York.

He was born in 1918 in Fort Wayne, Ind. He leaves behind his wife of 65 years, Maxine.

He served in World War II with the Army Combat Engineers in France and Germany. He and his family lived in Orchard Park, N.Y., and in York, Maine.

He worked for Spaulding Fibre Co. in North Tonawanda, N.Y., for 27 years and was vice president of marketing. Later, he was the founder and president of Bayhead Products in Dover, N.H. He retired in 1982.

He was an artist, sculptor and lover of life. He created many special sculptures until the weeks before his death. He created furniture for his family.

He will be missed by many family members and community members who were touched by him.

He is predeceased by his son, David Leitz, who died in 2001. He is survived by his daughter-in-law, Fran Leitz; his son, Jim Leitz and his wife, Kathie, of Lee, N.H.; and his daughters, Julie Vanasse and husband, David, of Kittery, and Martha Elmes and her husband, Rob of Burke, Vt.. He was also blessed with 11 grandchildren and 22 greatgrandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Edward Leitz’s name to the York Public Library at 15 Long Sands Road, York, Maine, 03909, because he loved books. In addition, donations can be made to Hospice of York, 1A Hospital Drive, York, Maine, 03909.

Leon A. Works

York - Leon a. Works, 78, of 13 South St., in York, died Thursday, April 7, 2005, at York Hospital after a long illness.

He was born on Sept. 21, 1926, in New Sharon, Maine, the son of John R. and Mildred (Neal) Works and attended New Sharon High School. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II.

He started his career as a grader operator with the Maine Department of Transportation. He retired as supervisor of Southern York County DOT, retiring in 1987, after 45 years of service.

He was one of the original founders of the York Volunteer Ambulance Association.

He served as chief of the ambulance for 19 years and was an EMT. He also served on the York Volunteer Ambulance board of directors for 14 years and served as a Maine state police reserve officer and as a York police special officer.

He was a past master of St. Aspinquid Masonic Lodge No. 198 of York. He also was a past patron of Fadette Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star and served on the Advisory Board of Rainbows.

He was an avid cribbage player and was known for his storytelling and jokes.

He was a loving father and grandfather. Leon enjoyed hunting, deep-sea fishing and researching genealogy. He also enjoyed gardening and carpentry.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Diane L. Works, who died in 1956 and by a granddaughter, Elizabeth L. Works, who died in 1985.

Survivors include his wife, Louise (Booth) Works of York; six sons, Carl L. Works and his wife, Ruby, of North Berwick; David L. Works of Graniteville, Vt.; Donald L. Works of Northfield, Vt.; Curtis L. Works of York; Neal E. Works and his wife, Patty, of Acton; and Allen S. Works and his wife, Lori, of York; one daughter, Lorri A. Quito and her husband, Albert, of Tiverton, R.I.; a brother, Melvin Works of Gorham; two sisters, Etta Suits of New Sharon and Edith Hill of Stony Creek, Conn.; and 11 grandchildren.

A funeral was held on Monday in the St. Aspinquid Masonic Lodge, 99 Long Sands Road in York. A reception followed in the Masonic Hall. Interment was in First Parish Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the York Volunteer Ambulance Association, PO Box 238, York, 03909, or the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, Mass., 01701 or the charity of one’s choice.
