Gertrude A. Thompson

YORK - Gertrude A. Thompson, 83, of York, a longtime resident of Shapleigh, died April 7, 2005, at home following a lengthy illness.

She was born in Athens on Feb. 28, 1922, the daughter of Guy and Evelyn (Savage) Tuttle and attended Athens schools. She lived in Newport, R.I., for a while where she apprenticed as a hairdresser. She moved to Kittery in 1942, and in 1943, she married Eugene Thompson. They moved to Rockland, Mass., where she was employed with Maiden Form. She also worked for 15 years with Sigma Instruments in Braintree, Mass. They moved to Shapleigh in 1970. Gertrude was predeceased by her husband, Eugene in 1997, by a sister, Alta Tuttle, and by two brothers, Malcolm and Carl.

Survivors include her son, Robert Thompson and his wife, Eleanor of York; granddaughter, Robin Cogger and her husband, Scott of York; grandson, Robert W. Thompson, Jr., and his wife, Robyn of York; grandson, Ryan Thompson of Kittery; four great-grandchildren; four brothers, Roland Tuttle and Robert Tuttle, both of Kittery, Everett Tuttle of Parker, Colo., and Paul Tuttle of Dover, N.H.; three sisters, Pear* Pat" Tuttle and Ethel Curtis, both of Croydon, N.H., and Amy Ludlow of Rollinsford, N.H.; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are through the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home, 580 Main Street, Springvale. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions to the American Diabetes Foundation, 10 Bangor Street, Suite F, Augusta, Maine, 04330, or to the Beacon Hospice, York Branch, 54B Atlantic Place, South Portland, Maine, 04106.

Gary V. Moulton

YORK - Gary V. Moulton, 52, of Bullfrog Lane died Thursday, April 21, 2005, at York Hospital.

He was born in Chelsea, Mass., the son of Robert V. and Katherine (Gerry) Moulton. He was a 1971 graduate of York High School and graduated from Southern Maine Vocational Technical Institute in 1973.

He worked at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard before starting his own business, G.V. Moulton Plumbing and Heating 20 years ago.

He was a very active member of the St. Aspinquid Masonic Lodge in York and was the 1984 worshipful master of the Lodge. He was instrumental in starting the DeMolay Chapter for Boys in York and served as a dad adviser. He was a Shriner and DeMolay master councilor in the Kittery DeMolay Chapter.

He also proudly served the community as a member of the York Fire Department.

He enjoyed traveling with his wife on many cruises and RV trips. They had a winter home in Chokoloskee, Fla., where he spent his days fishing and relaxing outdoors. Family was especially important to him, and he was very proud of his three grandchildren, Hunter, Jillian and Wyatt.

Equipped with a very strong work ethic and a love of helping others, he was always willing to jump in and lend a hand. He enjoyed hunting, reading, singing and playing his guitar, and he will always be remembered as a great storyteller.

He is survived by his wife, Deborah Moulton of York; three daughters, Heather Bice and her husband, Josh, of Boca Raton, Fla., Amber Kerly and her husband, Steve, of St. Augustine, Fla., and Brianna Moulton of York; two stepsons, Richard and Patrick Dennis of York; his parents, Robert and Katherine Moulton of York; brother, Timothy Moulton and his wife, Gail, of Amelia Island, Fla.; two sisters, Wendy Mracek and her husband, William, of York, and Roxine Myshrall and her husband, Robert, of Kingfield, Maine; three grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

A celebration of Gary’s life was held on Sunday, April 24 in the First Parish Congregational Church on York Street in York. A Masonic Service was held in the church before the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Boston Shriners Hospital, 51 Blossom St. Boston, Mass., 02114. Arrangements by Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, York.

Lillian N. Newick

YORK - A celebration of the life of Lillian N. Newick will be held on Monday, May 2, 2005, at the First Parish Church on York Street in York.

Mildred C. Westfall

YORK HARBOR - Mildred C. Westfall died peacefully on Wednesday, April 21, 2005, in York Harbor.

She was born in 1912, daughter of Alice and Reinhold Hohensee, and stepdaughter of Hedwig Hohensee. She graduated from Torrington, Conn., high school in 1929, and married Eric H. Westfall in 1934.

She resided in Torrington for 76 years. Mildred and Eric moved to Amherst, Mass., in 1987. Two years after Eric died in 1992, Mildred moved to Maine.

A member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, she served on the Altar Committee and The Ladies Aide. She was a longtime member of The Eastern Star.

Besides her home and family (including the dogs), she enjoyed flowers, birds, the ocean and good food.

She is missed by her two daughters, Diane A. Westfall of Amherst, Mass., and Linda G. Westfall of Kittery Point; four granddaughters, two great-granddaughters and her brother, Walter Hohensee of Torrington.

Graveside service to celebrate her quiet, brave and kind soul will be held at Hillside cemetery in Torrington, Conn., on May 9 at 1 p.m.

Please send gratitude in spirit to the nurses and staff of Harbor Home in York Harbor and to all individuals who care for the aged and dying. Earl ‘Mike’ Carmichael

YORK HARBOR - Ear* Mike" Carmichael, 86, a resident of Harbor Home in York since 2002, formerly of Springhill, Fla., died on Thursday, April 21, 2005.

Born in Bridgewater, Maine, on Feb. 14, 1919, he was the son of Roy and Effie Carmichael. He was a 1937 graduate of Houlton High School and subsequently graduated from the Maine State Police Academy in 1947. On Dec. 15, 1945, he married Ruth Ketchum, who was his wife until she died in 2001. They had a close and very loving relationship.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Air Force in India and China. Following his discharge, he worked as a Maine state trooper in Houlton and Limestone, retiring in 1967 from the State Police Barracks in Scarborough. He began a second career in 1967 with Maine National Bank in Portland, where he retired in 1980 from his position as a branch manager.

He was an active member in the Maine State Troopers Association, Kora Temple, Kora Shrine Club, Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks and The Woodfords Club.

He enjoyed his retirement. He loved to play golf and made it a daily requirement. He was the Cribbage Champion in the family and continued to challenge his sons and family. He truly was a gift to all who knew him. He was soft-spoken, compassionate, gentle and so very kind to all. He was affectingly called "Papa" by not only his family but by those he touched throughout his years.

He is survived by his two sons, Richard R. Carmichael and his wife, Ann, of Wells and Jon R. Carmichael and his wife, Brenda, of York; a grandson, Jeffrey Carmichael of Orlando, Fla.; four granddaughters, Jennifer Carmichael of Encinitas, Calif., Abby Fields and her husband, Steve, of South Berwick, Whitney Carmichael of York, and Katie Carmichael of York.

Donations in memory of Mike Carmichael may be made to the Maine Parkinson Society, 5 Bucknam Road, Suite 1A, Falmouth, Maine, 04105.

Margaret Etta Clark

ROCHESTER, N.H. - Margaret Etta Clark, 88, formerly of Lilac City Estates in Rochester, N.H., died Saturday, April 16, 2005, at SunBridge Rehab Care and Facility following a period of failing health.

She was born in Manchester, N.H., on April 6, 1917, the daughter of George and Delia (Dow) Cleveland. As a young girl she grew up in Center Barnstead, where she went to school in a one-room school house until the age of 14. The family then moved to Manchester where she graduated from Manchester Central High School in 1935. She then went on to nursing school and obtained a licensed practicing nurse degree. She postponed her career to raise her four children.

Several years later, she resumed her nursing and was employed for a few years at York Harbor Hospital in Maine. She then worked as a civil servant for the Naval and Air Force hospitals where she retired after 20 years of service.

She was a faithful member of the United Eliot Methodist Church, where she continued her volunteering and was given countless awards for her devoted service.

She was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She will be missed by those who knew her, including her daughter, Patricia Ropars of Rochester; her three sons, Robert Clark, Ronald Clark and Curtis Clark and his wife, Norma, all of York; one brother, Roland Cleveland of California; one sister, Norma Roulx of Belmont, N.H., and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents and 11 brothers and sisters.

Friends and family gathered on April 22 and held a memorial service after at the United Eliot Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in her memory to her church or a charity of one’s choice.

Carol Elizabeth Emery

YORK - Carol Elizabeth Emery, 91, of York, died on Sunday, April 24, 2005, at the Harbor Home.

Born on June 5, 1913, in Hillsboro, N.H., she was the daughter of Arthur McNally and Phoebe B. Cram. She graduated from Hillsboro High School in Hillsboro, N.H., and received her registered nurse degree from Margaret Pillsbury School of nursing in Concord, N.H.

She was the wife of Roger L. Emery Sr., who died in May of 1979. Roger and Carol lived in Kittery for most of their married life. They thoroughly enjoyed many years of retirement during the winter months in St. Petersburg, Fla. Much of her life was devoted to nursing at the Portsmouth Hospital, private care and nursing homes both in New Hampshire and Florida. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Rebekahs and Second Christian Church in Kittery.

She is survived by her two sons, G. Richard Emery and his wife, Alice, of Kittery Point, and David C. Emery and his wife, Roni, of York; and one stepson, Robert Emery of Florida. She had nine grandchildren and several great grandchildren, she was predeceased by one stepson, Roger L. Emery Jr. She will be sorely missed by her children, grandchildren and friends.

Funeral services will be held privately. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Harbor Home, in care of Kathy Vinet, 6 Norwood Farms Road, York, Maine, 03909. Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

David B. Flowers

YORK - David B. Flowers, 72, of York, formerly of Somerville, Mass., died Sunday, April 24, 2005, at York Hospital.

He was born in Smithfield, N.C., the son of Eustace and Clyda Flowers. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean conflict aboard the USS Leyte. He worked as a police officer for the Metropolitan District Commission.

He was a member of the first Underwater Recovery Team for the MDC Police. He was also a member of the VFW Post 1012 in Medford, Mass.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Catherine Russo Flowers; his sons, David B. Flowers and his wife, Francesca, of Sherman Oaks, Calif. and Don Flowers and his wife, Donna, of Saugus, Mass.; his grandchildren, Amanda, Jillian and Julia; his siblings, Virginia Ennis of Benson, N.C., Don Flowers and his wife, Cheryl, of Charlotte, N.C.; brothers-in-law, Carmen Russo and his wife, Connie, and John Russo and his wife, Joann, and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, his four brothers, Gardner, William, Cecil and Durwood, and his sister Mary Ann.

A funeral Mass will be held at St. Christopher’s Church on York Street in York at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 28. Calling hours will be held Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road in York. Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 20 Speen St., Framingham, Mass., 01701.

Mathilde ‘Til’ M. F. Hargan

KENNEBUNK - Mathilde "Til" M. F. Hargan, 92, a resident of Huntington Common, died on Friday, April 22, 2005.

She was born on June 20, 1912, in Bayonne, N.J., the daughter of Emil Haas and Frida (Eberling) Haas.

She was an active member of the Mistletoe Assembly No. 20 of the Rainbow Girls and a member of the Bayonne Chapter 21 of the Order of the Eastern Star.

On Oct. 2, 1932, she married Frederick Dobson Hargan and they were together for nearly 60 years until his death on Sept. 13, 1992.

A dedicated housewife and mother, she held various offices in the Parent Teacher Association of the schools in Rutherford, N.J., where they lived for more than 30 years. She was active in various civic organizations including being one of the founding members of the Meadowlands Museum in Rutherford. During World War II, she was a block warden.

Upon her husband’s retirement, they moved to Falls Village, Conn. There she became a volunteer at Sharon Hospital. In 2000, she moved to Kennebunk where she first resided at Portside and then moved to Huntington Common.

She is survived by her son, Louis Hargan, of Cape Neddick; a daughter, Barbara Lowe, of East Fallowfield, Pa.; a daughter-in-law, Mary Hargan, of Redding, Conn.; and four granddaughters, Linda Bryant of Newcastle, Maine, Cynthia Van Winkle of Rutherford, N.J., Bajeerah LaCava of Phoenixville, Pa., and Yasmeen Lowe of East Fallowfield, Pa.; as well as three great grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, Rodger Hargan of Redding, Conn.

Memorial services and burial in Flushing cemetery in New York will be announced at a future date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to your local library. Arrangements are entrusted to the J. S. Pelkey Funeral Home in Kittery.

Gary E. Littlefield

YORK - Gary E. Littlefield, 58, of Scituate Road in York, died Monday, April 18, 2005, at York Hospital.

He was born in York on Nov. 27, 1946, the son of Stanley and Barbara (Eaton) Littlefield. He graduated from York High School and the University of New Hampshire with a degree in plant science.

He worked as an engineering technician for the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for more than 30 years. He was an avid Civil War buff and greatly enjoyed growing vegetables in his garden.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy (Galley) Littlefield of York; three daughters, Jennifer and her husband, John DeCuir, of San Diego, Jill and her husband, Dan White, of Kittery, and Julie and her husband, Steven Parent, of St. Albans, Vt.; five grandchildren, Madison, Kelly and Charlie White, Emily Parent and Noelle DeCuir; two aunts, Mary Cacciatore of Portsmouth, N.H. and Betty Gray of Wiscasset, Maine, and several cousins.

Arrangements by the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road in York. Interment will be private.

William A. Loftus

YORK - William A. Loftus, 47, of Long Sands Road, died unexpectedly at his home.

He was born on Nov. 26, 1957, in Vero Beach, Fla., the son of John and Diane (Urwick) Loftus. Will, as he was called, attended school in Molalla, Ore., and Hamilton, Mass. He spent time in the U.S. Coast Guard and attended college in California where he resided for several years before moving to York.

He leaves his mother, Diane Loftus of York; his father, John Loftus of Roseburg, Ore.; his brother, John Loftus of York; and his sister, Alena Loftus of York. He was predeceased by his brother, Mark Loftus in 2002.
