J. Milton Attridge

YORK - James Milton Attridge, 93, of 5 Sparhawk Lane in Kittery Point and Hemlock Street in York, died Tuesday, July 12, 2005, at the home of his son at 12 Hemlock St., in York.

He was born in Pepperell, Mass., on Dec. 19, 1911, the son of James E. and Irene (Tarbell) Attridge. He was a 1934 graduate of the University of Maine and received his degree in forestry.

Milton began his career in forestry with the Civilian Conservation Corps in Missouri at the nursery service. In 1946, he became the first forester hired by the New England Forestry Foundation and remained there for 30 years until his retirement in 1976.

He had formerly lived in Antrim, N.H, for many years and operated a Christmas tree farm and managed a sugar tree orchard. In 1988, he moved to Kittery Point. He continued his love of growing Christmas trees in 1993 when he planted 10,000 trees on Cider Hill in York, which he continued to prune and care for each year.

Milton had been a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Antrim, N.H, and served as a trustee. He was also a member of the Lions Club, a former Boy Scout leader, served on the board of the Antrim Water Commission and the beach committee of Gregg Lake in Antrim.

At the age of 85, he bought his first motorcycle, rode it once and said, "It’s not for me." He then sold it. At the age of 90, he became a supporter of Patient Advocates for Advanced Cancer Treatments and performed a skydive at Skydive New England to promote awareness.

He was predeceased by his wife, Florence (Moore) Attridge, who died in 1997.

Survivors include a daughter, Patricia E. Holder and her husband, William, of York; three sons, Lawrence P. Attridge of Jaffrey, N.H., J. Dale Attridge of York and Bruce E. Attridge and his wife, Renee, of Kittery; 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Hope Attridge of Aurora, Colo., and Evelyn Colbeth of Harrington, Maine.

Memorial donations may be made to the New England Forestry Foundation, PO Box 1346, Littleton, Mass., 01460.

Raymond W. Goodale III

NORTH BERWICK - Raymond W. Goodale III, 61, of Pleasant Street, died Saturday, July 16, 2005, in Goodall Hospital in Sanford, Maine.

He was born in Cambridge, Mass., on May 26, 1944, a son of Raymond W. and Ruth H. (Bates) Goodale Jr.

Mr. Goodale was a disabled veteran who served in the United States Air Force.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy (Daniels) Goodale of North Berwick; a daughter, Abigail Goodale of North Berwick; two sons, Raymond Goodale of Florida and Brian W. Goodale of Lebanon, Maine; a sister, Janet Smith of Hope, Maine; three brothers, Kenneth Goodale of Hodgdon, Maine, Brad Goodale of Cape Neddick, and Robert Goodale and his wife, Priscilla, of Wells; four grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Goodale - Raymond W. Goodale III, 61 of Pleasant Street, North Berwick, died July 16, 2005, at Goodall Hospital. Visiting hours will be held Wednesday, July 20 from 6-8 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral Home, 26 Market Street, North Berwick, Maine, where a funeral will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. Interment following in the Goodale Family Cemetery, Hilton’s Lane, Wells, Maine.

William H. Layman

YORK - William H. "Bill" Layman, 78, died Saturday, July 16, 2005, at his home.

He was born in Grantsville, Md., on Dec. 23, 1927, the son of Hebert and Claire (Hanft) Layman.

Upon graduating high school, he joined the U.S. Navy and served with the 103rd Seabees in the Southwest Pacific during World War II. After his discharge from the Navy, he attended the University of Maryland at College Park, earning his bachelor degree in physical education in 1952.

Bill was a professional negotiator and arbitrator for 53 years for the International Association of Machinist and Aerospace Workers, representing I.U.D. and federal employees. He was also an instructor at the Placid Harbour School in Maryland.

He served as selectman for the town of York for one term and was elected three times as York County Commissioner in District 5. Bill served as secretary of the York Charter Committee during the implementation of the charter. He served as the AARP state legislative representative, past vice president of the Maine Council of Senior Citizens, past vice president of the York Democratic Town Committee, member of the Board of Seacoast Shipyard Association, Maine County Commissioner Association, voting division four, the York County, Maine C.C.A., the self-funded Risk Insurance Pool Director and member of the Work Force Investment Act as a local official. He also served seven terms as chairman of the board of York County Commissioners and was lead negotiator of four collective bargaining agreements. He was also very involved in the construction of the new York County Jail and the access road was named "Layman Way" in honor of his involvement of the project.

He was a lifetime member of the VFW for 59 years and was also a member of the American Legion, the St. Aspinquid Lodge A.F. & A.M. of York, a charter and lifetime member of the National World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C., and a charter member of the Alliance for Retired Americans.

Over the years it seemed that "Bill Layman" became a household name. If you met him once, you were left with an impression that would never be forgotten. For the ones who truly knew him, they would say he was very passionate about his work and beliefs, a strong presence in every room and he spoke exactly what was on his mind, making him now a legend. A legend to his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, but also to countless individuals who have benefited from his lifelong dedication to making things "how they should be." Here’s to you - Hon, Dad, Pop and most of all, Bill. A legend will never be forgotten!

Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Gloria Raleigh Layman of York; three sons, William Layman Jr. of Annapolis, Md., Clifford Layman and his wife, Melony, of Lothian, Md., and John Layman and his wife, Chris, of Columbus, Ohio; two daughters, Diane Layman Ritter and her husband, Steve, of Cairo, W.Va., and Dawn Layman of Cairo, W.Va.; 10 grandchildren and two great-granddaughters; a step-son, Keith Bishop Sr. of York; two brothers, Ronald Reed Layman of Cape Coral, Fla., and Jack Layman of Berlin, Md.; three sisters, Eileen Damon of Oakland, Md., Helen Zeller of Strongville, Ohio, and Nancy Layman of Washington, DC.

Layman - William H. "Bill" Layman, 77, of Harbour Hill Road in York, died July 16, 2005, at his home. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, July 22 in the First Parish Congregational Church, 180 York St., York. There will be no visiting hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, NE Division, 30 Speen St., Framingham, Mass., 01701 or the V.F.W. Post 6977 Building Fund, PO Box 201, York Beach, Maine, 03910. Arrangements by the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home of York.

Rena Winn Perkins

OGUNQUIT - Rena Winn Perkins, 94, of Beach Street, died Monday, July 18, 2005, at York Hospital.

She was born in York’s North Village on Aug. 31, 1910, a daughter of Charles F. and Hattie L. Hill Winn. She attended local schools and graduated from Wells High School. She later attended and graduated from McIntosh Business School in Dover, N.H.

Rena was a well-known and respected business person in the Ogunquit area. She owned and operated, with her family, the Betty Doon Restaurant and Hotel on Beach Street for more than 30 years.

In 1966, with her son, Newell, they opened and operated Perkins Real Estate on Beach Street. She retired at the age of 74 to winter in her Florida home.

Rena, at the time of her passing, was the longest-standing member of the Ogunquit Baptist Church. The Perkins/Winn family tree in North Village and Wells dates back to the mid 1600s.

Always interested in history and geneology, she was often sought out for her knowledge of the family trees in Ogunquit, York and Wells.

Rena is predeceased by her husband, Grover S. Perkins Sr.; her two step-daughters, Murial P. Eslinger and Marcel P. Taft; her brother, Arnold Winn; and her sister, Gertrude Winn Allen.

Surviving are her two sons, Grover S. Perkins Jr. and his wife, Margaret, of North Village in York, and Newell S. Perkins and his wife, Nancy, of Ogunquit; two stepsons, Marlowe Perkins of Mechanicsburg, Pa., and Merlin Perkins of Cortez, Colo.; four grandchildren, Lt. Col. Lee-Ann Perkins of Ramstein Air Base, Germany, G. Steve Perkins III, of Moscow, Russia, Christian P. Perkins of Boston, and Jason S. Perkins of New York City; and seven stepgrandchildren.

Private family services will be held. If desired, donations can be made in her memory to the Wells-Ogunquit Historical Society, PO Box 801, Post Road, Wells, Maine 04090. Arrangements are by Bibber Memorial Chapel, 111 Chapel Road, Wells, Maine.

Paul K. Wallace

NEWBURYPORT, Mass. - Paul K. Wallace, 72, of Newburyport, Mass., beloved husband of Mary G. (Vacour) Wallace, died on Sunday, July 17, 2005, at his home after a long illness.

He was born on Sept. 28, 1932, in Hamilton, Mass., the son of the late Edward and Mary (Maloney) Wallace.

He is survived by his wife; two children, Paul K. Wallace Jr. and his wife, Kristen, of Stratham, N.H., and Caroline Meagher and her husband of Cape Neddick; two grandchildren, Cori and Sammi of Cape Neddick; a brother, Edward J. Wallace of Englewood, Fla.; and a sister, Mary Gallagher of Westwood, Mass. He was predeceased by two brothers, the late John J. Wallace and William H. Wallace.

Mr. Wallace grew up in Hamilton, Mass., and lived there with his family for many years. They moved to Newburyport, Mass., 16 years ago and had recently sold their home and moved to a condo. He was a veteran of the Korean War, having served in the U.S. Army. He is a retired computer technician from Agra in Wilmington, Mass.

Wallace - Paul K. Wallace, 72, of Newburyport, Mass., died Sunday, July 17, 2005, at his home after a long illness. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 21 at 11 a.m. in St. Paul’s Church, Union Street, Hamilton, Mass. At the request of the family, there will be no calling hours. Funeral arrangements by Twomey LeBlanc Funeral Home, 193 High St., Newburyport, Mass.

Mary E. Mulholland

SOUTH BERWICK - Mary Elizabeth (Durkin) Mulholland of South Berwick, died peacefully in her home Friday, Aug. 19, 2005, after a four-year battle with ovarian cancer.

Born June 3, 1920, in New York City to John and Nora (Boland) Durkin, who preceded her in death, she married Eugene Paul Mulholland on June 8, 1946. He preceded her in death in 1971.

Surviving are her children, Theresa (Peter) Pinsi of Florida, Jeannie (Ray) Pawley of Maine and Edward P. (MaryAnn) Mulholland of Connecticut; her grandchildren, Ren, Jason, Christopher and Tara; her great-grandchildren; her loving sisters and brothers, Margaret (Durkin) Gilmartin, Eleanor Durkin, John (Carmella) Durkin, and William (Gloria) Durkin; her many nieces and nephews, James Gilmartin, Mary Ann Gilmartin-White, William Durkin Jr., Patricia (Durkin) Neary, Catherine (Durkin) Meister, Thomas (Julia) Durkin, Christine (Radelein) Swanson and their families and her special friend, Scarlett.

Mary graduated from Cathedral High School and Immaculate Conception School of business in the Bronx, N.Y., and worked for Westinghouse Inc. in New York City. Following her marriage, she moved to New Rochelle, N.Y., where she raised her family and worked at Salesian High School. She enjoyed the camaraderie of the many Salesian priests, and brothers of the order of St. Don Bosco, co-workers and parents she met during her many years of service. She moved to Danbury, Conn., in 1975 retired from Grolier Publishing Co., Danbury, Conn., in 1995. Before moving to Maine, Mary lived in Delavin, Ill., with her daughter Jeannie and her family. Mary thoroughly enjoyed the many friendships she developed throughout the United States.

She enjoyed traveling, listening to music, dancing, singing, reading, writing letters, making candy wreaths, watching television sitcoms and movies, and talking and laughing with her family and friends.

A member of St. Michael’s R.C. Parish, South Berwick, Mary derived peace, comfort and serenity through her religious convictions and spirituality. She received outstanding medical care and emotional support from the York Hospital Oncology staff, York Family Practice, staff, York Hospital staff, York Home Health Care staff, Maine Medical Center Oncology Unit and Beacon Hospice staff. Special thanks to AlphaOne.

Cremation was accorded. The cremains will be interred with her husband’s remains in Holy Sepulcher Cemetery, New Rochelle, N.Y., at a later date.

A memorial service to celebrate Mary’s life will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 10, 2005, at St. Michael’s R.C. Church, South Berwick.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to York Hospital, 15 Hospital Drive, York, ME, 03909, or to The American Cancer Society.

Milton Hugh Shaw

YORK - Milton Hugh Shaw, 87, of York died Thursday, June 23, 2005, at York Hospital after a period of failing health. born Jan. 31, 1918, in New Bedford, Mass., he was the son of Eda (Jackson) and Hugh Shaw.

He took part in seven operations during World War II and for 21 years, served as executive vice president of the Massachusetts Association of Realtors.

Milton retired as a Navy captain in 1968, bringing to close a 21-year Naval career during which he won a Bronze Star and served during the Korean conflict.

The native of New Bedford, Mass., was introduced to Maine during a three-year stint as head of the Nautical Department at Maine Maritime Academy in Castine. He moved to York in 1985 and became an active member of the First Parish Church.

He grew up in New Bedford, spending time aboard the ships and talking with the sailors when they came into the harbor. This is where he got the urge to go to sea.

Following his urge, Milton attended the Massachusetts Nautical School, now Massachusetts Maritime, where he was president of his class for all four years. He graduated in 1939.

He served in the Merchant Marine earning a rank of ensign in the Navy Reserve. When the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor in December 1941, it was only a matter of time before he was called to active duty in January 1942.

He was the gunnery officer on the USS Ariel, a refrigerated supply transport, before being transferred to the Pacific theater and the USS Elmore, an attack transport.

He was part of seven different invasions, including those at the Marshall Islands and Leyte, off of the Philippines; Okinawa, near Japan, and Guam.

After moving to York in 1985, he joined the Navy League and was elected president of its Portsmouth Council in March 1997 and served three years.

He entered the real estate business as a salesman after the Korean War and subsequently became sales manager of the firm with he was associated. In 1955, he became president of Shaw and Caulfied Inc., a real estate brokerage and appraisal firm doing business in Sudbury, Mass. He was president of the Greater Boston Real Estate Board in 1962 and 1963 and the first man to be selected twice as that board’s Realtor of the Year.

In 1965, he was elected president of the Massachusetts Association of Real Estate Boards and selected as Massachusetts Realtor of the Year in 1966. He served as director of the National Association of Realtors and, in 1976, was elected chairman of the Executive Officers of that Association.

Mr. Shaw was the recipient of several real estate awards and honors and served the Massachusetts Association of Realtors as its executive vice president from 1967 to 1988. He held the designation of CAE (Certified Association Executive) of the American Society of Association Executives.

In 1984, the association initiated the Milton H. Shaw Achievement Award, which is presented annually to the Realtor who has been most outstanding and truly given of himself on behalf of the association. In 1988, he was the recipient of the coveted William Magel Award presented by the National Association of Realtors for his outstanding leadership ability and contributions to the real estate industry. In 1998, Capt. Shaw was inducted into the Professional Executive Leadership Society of the National Association of Realtors. He was a licensed real estate broker in Massachusetts and Maine and was a director emeritus of the Navy League of the United States.

He was an active member and chairman of the Assessors of the First Parish United Congregational Church of York.

He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Anne Robinson Jones Shaw, of York; sons, Milton H. and wife, Karen, (Pulley) Shaw of Denver, Colo., and Bruce W. Shaw of Westerly, R.I.; daughters, Catherine and her husband, John D. Crawford III, of Chelmsford, Mass., Patrice Green of Jaffrey, N.H., Annie L. Jones of Cumberland, R.I., and Michele Jones of Chelmsford, Mass. He also leaves eight beloved grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 28, at the First Parish Congregational Church, in York with Interment with full military honors in the First Parish Cemetery, York.

Arrangements by the Lucas & Eaton Funeral home, 91 Long Sands Road, York.

Richard Douglas Lavery

YORK HARBOR - Richard Douglas Lavery, 82, of York Harbor, died Monday, June 27, 2005, at his home. He was born on July 6, 1922, in Gloversville, N.Y., the son of James and Adrienne Lavery.

Richard graduated from high school at the age of 16 and promptly enlisted in the U.S. Army where he became a paratrooper with the 11th Airborne Unit, and he participated in the airborne assault on Corregidor. He was then stationed at Luzon, in the Philippine Islands. After World War II, he went to work for GTE Sylvania, retiring at the age of 54, as vice president of finance. After retiring to York Harbor, Richard gave 13 years of service to the York Water District.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Carol (Ambrosino) Lavery, of York Harbor; a son, Richard Lavery and his wife, Shelly, of North Muskegon, Mich.; a daughter, Carol Converse and her husband, Mark, of Keene, N.H.; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. on Friday at the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York. Interment will follow in the First Parish Cemetery, York. Visiting hours will be 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday at the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home.
