Gary Moulton

YORK VILLAGE - Gary V. Moulton is a man remembered by his brother firefighters and his fellow Masons as someone who cared very deeply about helping others.

To those ends, the members of St. Aspinquid Masonic Hall on Long Sands Road will host a celebration of Moulton’s life this Saturday, June 4.

Moulton, who has been eulogized by local residents as a Mason, firefighter, father, grandfather, husband, friend and local businessman, succumbed to his battle with cancer on April 21 at the age of 52.

Among those who have spoken of Moulton’s impact on their lives are York Fire Chief Chris Balentine and Bob Hoyt of St. Aspinquid.

Saturday’s celebration will be a chance to "come and share with family and friends the wonderful memories that we all share," Hoyt wrote in his announcement of the event.

Days after Moulton’s passing, Hoyt described him as exemplifying all that a Mason is meant to be: A person who cared more about others than he did about himself.

Balentine shared a similar perspective, describing Moulton as a man with "a real genuine interest in helping people."

As Walter Kyllonen, secretary of St. Aspinquid Lodge, explained, Moulton’s fellow Masons had intended to honor him as Mason of the Decade this month - an honor that was instead bestowed during his funeral celebration at First Parish Church.

Saturday’s event, which has been named "A Celebration of the Life of Gary V. Moulton," is aimed at honoring Moulton’s commitment to others by serving also as a fund-raiser for Hospice of York.

The event will begin at 4:30 p.m. with a chicken barbecue dinner served for a donation of $7 for adults and $4 for children. All proceeds will be donated to Hospice of York.

The memorial celebration is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m.

Olaf Solli

YORK HARBOR - Olaf Solli, 87, died Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2005, at home with his family and with the tremendous sup-port of Beacon Hospice.

Olaf was born in Sande, Norway, in 1918 and had a distinguished career in the Norwegian Foreign Service. Olaf was raised on a potato farm near Oslo fjord and helped his family to survive the Great Depression by selling produce on roadside stands.

He later left for Oslo to pursue his education, but his studies were interrupted in 1940 when the Germans invaded Norway. He spent three weeks at the Norwegian front during the battle of Valdres, considered the most pitched battles between Norwegian and German forces in Norway.

He then completed his education with a degree in economics from the University of Oslo, with additional studies at the University of Stockholm and the London School of Economics. Olaf’s professional experiences include serving as economic adviser to the Norwegian delegation to the United Nations, charge d’affairs for the Norwegian embassy in Washington, D.C., director general of the Norwegian Foreign Trade Department, and consul general of Norway in Montreal, Minneapolis and, most recently, San Francisco. At various times he also served as a member of the Norwegian Export Council, Foreign Currency and Exchange Council, Atomic Energy Council and the Norwegian committees for the European Free Trade Agreement and the EEC. Olaf was appointed knight, first class of the St. Olav Order of Norway in 1978 and made commander of the St. Olav Order in 1985, membership in the Order is bestowed by the Norwegian King (for distinguished service to country and mankind).

He retired from diplomatic services in 1989. Olaf and his wife settled in Maine in 1997 after having spent many summers in York, and Olaf considered Mainers to be among the finest people he had met in his travels around the world. One of his favorite stories came during a fishing trip to Kennebago Lake in the Rangeley area. A waitress was having a hard time understanding his thick, Norwegian accent. When she asked where he was from, he said, "I’m from Norway." "Oh," she replied, "I’m from Rumford!"

Olaf is survived by his wife of 49 years, Joan M. (Johnson) Solli; a son, Paul Solli of Mill Valley, Calif.; two daughters, Marie Solli and Anne Solli of York; and two grandchildren, Sarah and Erik Solli of Mill Valley, Calif.

Funeral services and burial will be held at a later date. The Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York, Maine, is directing arrangements.
