Louise Elizabeth Fulton Sodano

YORK HARBOR - Louise Elizabeth Fulton Sodano, 89, died peacefully at Maine General Rehabilitation and Nursing Care in Augusta on Sunday, Dec. 25, 2005, with her son, Michael, and his wife, Aleta, at her side.

Louise was born March 13, 1916, the daughter of Horace M. and Antoinette (Wilner) Fulton, in Washington, D.C. She was raised in Washington, D.C., and graduated from Holton Arms College, Bethesda, Md., in 1934.

She summered in York from infancy until 1952 when she became a year-round resident. In 1939, she married Michael C. Sodano and they resided in Weymouth, Mass., until he entered the Marine Corps as an officer in 1941. She was employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard during the 1950s. She later worked as a docent for the Warner House in Portsmouth.

From an interest in art inherited from her mother, she took lessons in the York area and developed a lifelong interest in painting. She was involved with Meals on Wheels and always gave rides to non-driving widows. She and her sister, Marion Fulton, were among the founding members of the York Art Association. She was an active member of the Union Congregational Church in York Beach and the York Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

She is survived by her son, Michael C. Sodano and his wife, Aleta M. Kilborn, of Whitefield and Portland, Maine; two granddaughters, Valerie M. and her husband, Robert Baker of South China, Maine, and Ruthlyn M. Sodano, of Albany, N.Y.; two great-grandsons, Alec and Isaac of South China. She was predeceased by a grandson, Chandler, in 1973, and a sister, Marion A. Fulton, in 1980.

SODANO - Louise Elizabeth Fulton Sodano, 89, passed away on Dec. 25, 2005. The service for Mrs. Sodano will take place at 11:30 a.m on Friday, Jan. 6, 2006, in the Union Congregational Church, York Beach. Calling hours are from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 5, 2006, in the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York, Maine. Burial will take place in Rock Creek Cemetery, Washington, D.C., in the spring. Rachael H. (Tucker) Gratta

YORK HARBOR - Rachael H. (Tucker) Gratta, 90, of York Street, died Friday, Dec. 30, 2005, in Sentry Hill. She was born in Berwick, the daughter of Charles and Martha (Goodwin) Hussey.

She graduated from Berwick Academy in 1933. She was a member of the First Parish Congregational Church, the Berwick Academy Alumni Association and an active member of the Parks Commission in York. She was the oldest of 10 children.

She leaves a son, Anthony W. Gratta and his wife, Joanne Hollands-Gratta, of York; two daughters, Pamela Tucker and her husband, Richard Bell, of Lynn, Mass., and Carolyn D’Entremont-Sullivan of Concord, N.H.; two brothers, Paul Hussey of South Berwick and Gerald Hussey of Kissimmee, Fla.; four sisters, Katherine Keelty of Somersworth, N.H., Madeline Lilly of South Ber-wick, Martha Abbott of North Berwick and Phyllis Clarke of Tacoma, Wash.; three grandchildren, Hillary Sullivan, Amelia Gratta and Morgaine Adair. A daughter, Rosalie Seagran, predeceased her.

GRATTA - Rachael H. (Tucker) Gratta, 90, died Dec. 30, 2005. The memorial service for Mrs. Gratta will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 7, 2006, in the First Parish Congregational Church, York Street, York. Mary Louise Cutts

YORK - Mary Louise Cutts, 87, formerly of Newtown, Conn., died Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2006, at Sentry Hill in York, where she had been a resident since June 2001.

She was the daughter of the late Henry Eastman and Mary Louise (Smith) Cutts. She was born and raised in Tenafly, N.J. Mary Lou had strong ties to Maine, and summered in her great-grandfather’s house in York. She graduated from Connecticut College with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics. She worked for many years in her father’s chemistry laboratory in New York City. Subsequently, she moved to Newtown, Conn., with her late sister, Elizabeth Eastman Cutts, and worked for Sperry Rail until her retirement.

Mary Lou was an avid traveler, and she was a member of the Traveler’s Club, Sixty-Plus Club and the Knitting Club. She and her sister were especially fond of their summer trips to Kennebunkport, Maine, which were punctuated by swimming in the cold Atlantic Ocean and dinners out with family. Also an amateur historian, Mary Lou gathered genealogical in-formation on such notable relatives as Captain David Wilcox and Dr. Caleb Eastman, both prominent figures in York’s history.

Mary Lou will be remembered for her easy smile, peaceful personality and her keen sense of humor. She loved to giggle.

She was predeceased by her parents; her brother, Richard W. Cutts, of York; a sister, Elizabeth E. Cutts, and a nephew, Thomas Cutts, of York. She is survived by four nephews, Richard Cutts, of Texas and York, David Cutts of New Jersey, William Cutts of New Mexico and Robert Cutts of York; a niece, Nancy Cutts of Kittery, Maine, and many grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

A funeral service was held Saturday, Jan. 7, in St. George’s Episcopal Church in York Harbor. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, New York. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cyrenius H. Booth Library, 25 Main St., Newtown, Conn., 06470. Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York, is directing arrangements.

Frederick W. Boardman Sr.

YORK - Frederick W. Boardman Sr., 74, of 95 Cape Neddick Road, died Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2006, in Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

He was born March 4, 1931, in York, the son of Carl and Romie (Ellis) Boardman. He was a 1948 graduate of York High School. After spending four years in the U.S. Navy, he completed an apprenticeship at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard where he worked for many years before retiring as an advance planner.

He was a longtime member of the Cape Neddick Country Club and the Union Congregational Church. He leaves his wife of 52 years, Fay (Johnson) Boardman; three sons, Rick and his wife, Liz, of York, Frank and his wife, Nancy, of Fishkill, N.Y., and Ferris and his, wife, Donna of York; a daughter, Paula Severseike and her husband, Mark, of Littleton, Colo.; two brothers, James and Richard Boardman both of York Beach; a sister, Barbara Patch of Feeding Hills, Mass.; eight granddaughters, one grandson, nieces and nephews. Two brothers, Eugene and Carl Boardman, and a sister, Ann Downing, predeceased him.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Robert Helm and the staff of the ICU at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital for the professional and compassionate care they provided Fred.

Walter Herbert Cook

CAPE NEDDICK - Walter Herbert Cook of Cape Neddick, formerly of Lexington, Mass., died Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2006.

He was a member of the U.S. Marine Corps and the York, Maine Elks Post 2788. He collected antique cars and enjoyed spending his time traveling the world.

He was the son of the late Herbert Cook and Rose Cook Barca (Pierro) and nephew of Michael F. Pierro of Long Beach, Calif., Concetta Agostino of Lexington, Mass., and Aurio Pierre Esq. of Lexington. He is survived by cousins, William Barrett of Lexington, Betty Barrett of Arlington, Mass., Barbara Carasitti of Arlington, Richard Boisvert of Billerica, Mass., William Pierro of Chelmsford, Mass., Rita Taylor of Franconia, N.H., and Richard Blanche of Long Beach, Calif. He is also survived by many friends including his close friends Ginny Garland, Rosalind Fedeli and William Charlton.

The funeral took place at The Douglass Funeral Home in Lexington, Mass., on Saturday, Jan. 7. A Mass of Christian burial followed at the Sacred Heart Church in Lexington. Donations in his memory may be made to the American Heart Association, 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA, 01701.

Leo A. Flynn

LAKE PLACID, Fla. - Leo A. Flynn, 55, of Lake Placid, Fla., formerly a lifelong resident of York, died on Thursday, Jan. 12, 2006, in Florida.

Born in Portsmouth, N.H., on April 24, 1950, he was a son of Bernard and Gertrude (Kimball) Flynn. He attended York schools, graduating from York High School with the Class of 1969.

Following graduation, Leo served his country as a member of the United States Navy.

Leo enjoyed hunting, fishing and working on cars as a young man. Most recently, he enjoyed membership in Jim’s Pistol and Arrow indoor shooting club in Florida. Second only to the love he shared with his family was his love of his community, which he was raised in and served for many years in a number of capacities.

Leo joined the York Beach Fire Department in 1968 and was hired as a permanent firefighter in 1985. He attained the rank of permanent captain before retiring in 2005. At that time, he was sent off with a wonderful celebration of his years of service by his fellow firefighters and his family. He served as a member of Maine State Federation of Firefighters, Inc, York County Firefighters Association, Fire Investigators of York County, National Association of Fire Investigators, and the Maine Chapter International Association of Fire Investigators.

He was a dedicated member of the American Legion Post 56 of York. He was a past commander of the post and was also instrumental in helping the post get re-established and re-chartered. As well as serving in many capacities in the Legion Post, he was also a strong leader, bringing the post to its current home and planning for the future building of a new post.

His first love was, unquestionably, his family. He is survived by his loving wife, Diane (O’Brien) Flynn, whom he wed in 1990; his daughters, Marlaina and her husband, Samuel Malone, of Dover, N.H., Lee Ann Ranfos and her husband, Sean of Rochester, N.H., Jamie Flynn of York, Bobbie Miller and her husband, Timothy, of Greenland, N.H., and Shawnee Flynn of York; his son, Aaron Flynn of York; his grandchildren whom he adored, Sean and Heaven Ranfos and Michael and Jacob Miller; brothers, James Flynn of Salem, Ore., and Brian Flynn of Sanford; sisters, Cheryl Plouff of Cape Neddick, Donna Morrill of Kittery and Rosie Tuttle of Sanford; a brother-in-law, William and his wife, Nancy O’Brien, of Saugus, Mass., and several nieces and nephews.

Gertrude M. Gilbert

YORK HARBOR - Gertrude M. Gilbert, 85, of 2 Victoria Court, died Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2006, in York Hospital.

She was born Jan. 14, 1920, in Chicopee Falls, Mass., the daughter of Orrin and Ella (Dixson) Bailey. She was a longtime resident of South Portland.

She leaves a son, Vance K. Thornton of York; a daughter, Lynia G. Burpee of Kennebunk; a sister, Nathania Stafford of Rochester, N.H.; six grandchildren, Timothy, Anthony and Tamara Burpee and Joshua, Tyler and Emily Thornton; and a great-granddaughter, Kasandra Burpee.

Funeral services and burial will be private. Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York is directing arrangements.

Ann Chadwick Reber Caroll Jones Brown

YORK - Ann Chadwick Reber Caroll Jones Brown, 79, died Thursday evening, Jan. 26, 2006, after a battle with lung cancer. Her husband, James S. Brown III, died in 2005.

She leaves a son, Michael Westcott Brown of Sewickley, Pa.; a daughter, Nina Brown MacDonald of Raleigh, N.C.; two grandchildren, Sam and Hilary Brown; and a brother, Jack Reber of Washington.

She was born in New Rochelle, N.Y., the daughter of John and Helen (Hutchins) Reber. She graduated from Madeira school in 1945 and attended Columbia University. A cover girl model in the late 1940s and early 1950s, a bon vivant of the first order and a great beauty with a love of life. They broke the mold with her.

Funeral services will be private. Memorial contributions may be made to The Animal Rescue League. Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York, is directing arrangements.

Florence J. Driggs

YORK - Florence J. Driggs, 94, of 21 High Rock Road, died Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2006, in York Hospital.

She was born in Towaco, N.J., the daughter of Frank L. and Leavenia (VanDuyne) Jacobus and had lived in Butler, N.J., and Brewster, Mass., before moving to York in 2000. Her husband, Alan K. Driggs, of 69 years, died in 2001.

She leaves two daughters, Jeanette A. and her husband, Joseph T. Dominguez, of York and Susan A. and her husband, Garret Polhemus, of Steinhatchee, Fla.; eight grandchildren, Rebecca Sacchetti, Joseph T. Dominguez III, Jessica Dominguez, Dawn Torento, Daryl Denittis, Amy Sanchez, Eric Dickieson and Bradford Dickieson; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Two brothers, Edison and Chris Jacobus, and two sisters, Mabel Seward and Laura Smith, predeceased her. She was a member of the First Parish Church, a friend and lover of nature, especially birds. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

The funeral service for Mrs. Driggs was held on Tuesday, Feb. 7 in the First Parish Church, York. Burial will take place at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 8, in Pinegrove Cemetery, Brewster, Mass. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Parish Church, Senior High Mission Trip, 180 York St., York, Maine 03909. Arrangements by the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York.

Maria C. Sciaky

YORK HARBOR - Maria C. Sciaky, 73, of 15 Wavecrest Drive, died Saturday, Jan. 28, 2006, in York Hospital.

She leaves her husband of 49 years, Albert L. Sciaky; two sons, Richard C. Richter of San Francisco, Calif., and Christopher M. Sciaky of El Dorado Hills, Calif.; a daughter, Elena D. Sciaky of Hoboken, N.J.; a brother, Roberto Lara of Saratoga, Calif.; a sister, Myrna Speckhard of Phoenix, Ariz.; four grandchildren, Rosamund Cogswell, Elizabeth, Edward and Melanie Sciaky.

She was born in Manhattan, N.Y., the daughter of Domingo and Rose (Gonzales) Lara and had lived in York since the summer of 1963. Maria wrote poetry through the years, she was a lover of opera and a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.

Maryellen Eaton Wood

YORK - Maryellen Eaton Wood, 94, of York, died Feb. 6, 2006, at Sentry Hill in York Harbor.

Maryellen was born in York on March 11, 1911, the daughter of James and Mary Eaton. A lifelong resident, she was the sole surviving member of the York High School Class of 1929. Maryellen and her husband, George, owned and operated Camp Eaton Oceanside Camping in York Harbor from 1933 to 1970. Her parents founded the campground in 1923.

George and Maryellen lovingly restored the Gen. John Harmon House, a York Village historic landmark. She enjoyed traveling in Europe, the Bahamas, Bermuda and Hawaii. Her many hobbies included rug hooking, stenciling, needlepoint and antique collecting and gardening. Maryellen was a member of the Women’s League of York, The Old York Garden club, the York Hospital Guild, The Old York Historical Society, York Land Trust, Trinity Church and St. George’s Episcopal Church.

She was predeceased by her husband, George A. Wood, and her grandson, Kenneth Wood Wagner. She is survived by her daughter, Jane Wood Wagner, and husband, Burton; grandchildren, Peter T. Wagner and his wife, Kathryn, Pamela W. Nickless and her husband, Gary; great grandchildren, Erin, Molly and Seth Wagner, Brian and Sean Nickless; dear friends, Paula and Jim Williams, those who visited her frequently at Sentry Hill and her beloved cats, Mimi and Gigi.

A memorial service will be held in the spring. Alma D. Yacubeck

CHICOPEE, Mass. - Alma D. Yacubeck, 87, of Chicopee, Mass., the loving wife of the late John Yacubeck, died at home following a brief illness on Dec. 22 in York, where she made her winter home with her daughter, Faith Hunter, and her granddaughter, Kristin Tully, and her family.

Born Oct. 14, 1918, in Ocqueoc, Mich., she lived there until her marriage to the late Harold Bennett Sr., a member of the U.S. military, after which she lived in several other cities in Michigan as well as the states of Texas, Florida, Mississippi and Illinois, finally moving to Chicopee in 1957 where she lived the remainder of her years. Following 20 years of service, she retired in 1980 from Hamilton Standard in Windsor, Conn.

She was a communicant of First Lutheran Church of Holyoke. She was a charter member of Women of the Loyal Order of Moose, Lodge 1849 in Chicopee. She was an active member of the Chicopee Senior Citizens Center where she loved to participate in the Senior Follies each year. She was an avid gardener, sharing both her vegetables and flowers with family, neighbors and friends.

After her retirement, she and her husband, John, traveled many places around the country visiting with family and friends. She traveled extensively with her sisters and friends visiting such places as China, Egypt, Sweden, Denmark, Jerusalem, France and Germany until she was stricken with cancer and unable to travel. She was, however, a cancer survivor and went on to make several more trips.

In addition to her husband, John, she is predeceased by her son and his wife, Richard and Kathleen Bennett, of Michigan; her son, Harold Bennett Jr. of Ludlow, Mass.; her daughter, Lucinda Bennett Moriarty of East Longmeadow, Mass.; her parents, Fred and Alma Domke of Ocqueoc, Mich.; and four sisters, Minnie Pawlicki, Teresa Anderson, Freida Ireland and Bertha Bruder, all of Michigan.

She is survived by two sisters, Laura Foster of Ocqueoc, and Magdalena Spiegel of Sitka, Alaska; three brothers, Arthur Domke and wife, Betty, of Ocqueoc, Raymond Domke and wife, Jean, of Tawas, Mich., and Rueben Domke and wife, Elly, of Mountain Home, Idaho; her daughter, Faith of York, and her daughter, Constance Bennett Taylor and her husband, Walter, of DeFuniak Springs, Fla. She also leaves 12 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, five great-great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held in Holyoke, Mass., on Dec. 28, 2005. Messier Funeral Home, 1944 Northampton Street, Holyoke, Mass. 01040. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to First Lutheran Church of Holyoke, Northampton St. Holyoke, MA, 01040 or the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St. Framingham, MA, 01701.

Vesta P. (Raymond) Crockett

YORK - Vesta P. (Raymond) Crockett, 94, of 349 Ridge Road, died Friday, Feb. 10, 2006, at home following an illness.

Her husband of 44 years, George W. "Bill" Crockett, died in 1973.

She leaves two daughters, Joan R. Weeks of Melbourne, Fla., and Elizabeth P. Knapp of York; 16 grandchildren including her devoted granddaughter, Laura "Cricket" Crockett of Hillsboro, Ore.; many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

A son, Willard A. Crockett, predeceased her. She was born in Centreville, Nova Scotia, the daughter of Shannon and Manetta (Hersey) Raymond and had lived in York since 1960.

She was the oldest of nine children and out-lived them all. She had worked as an assembler in various shoe factories. Vesta was a longtime resident and will be best remembered in recent years for all the phone calls she made to almost anyone she ever knew on behalf of St. Christopher’s Christmas raffle. She hardly left her home, having her friends come to her and she sold approximately 500 tickets.

Her famous words were "what eva." She was a longtime member of St. Christopher’s Church. She was an honorary member of the VFW.

The funeral Mass for Mrs. Crockett was held on Tuesday, Feb. 14 in St. Christopher’s Church, York. Burial will take place in the First Parish cemetery in the spring. Memorial contributions may be made to the York Volunteer Ambulance Assoc., P.O. Box, 238 York, ME, 03909. Arrangements by Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York.
