Audrey Jane (Chandler) Woodman

KITTERY POINT - Audrey Jane (Chandler) Woodman, 94, of 611 Haley Road, Kittery Point, died at her home on Feb. 8, 2006.

Born in Spokane, Wash., on Sept. 13, 1911, she was the daughter of Robert Flint Chandler and Harriet Clark (Loring) Chandler.

The family moved to New Gloucester, Maine, in 1912 where Audrey and her siblings spent a wonderful childhood. She graduated from New Gloucester High School and attended Portland School of Art until her marriage to George M "Billy" Woodman in 1934. They lived in Staten Island, N.Y., until moving to Hingham, Mass., where they founded The Country Loft, a reproduction tinware business.

Audrey was a member of the Historical Society of Early American Decoration and taught in Hingham and later at Strawbery Banke in Portsmouth, N.H. In 1952, they relocated to Newfields, N.H, where they lived until 1963 when they moved to York for summers and Big Pine Key, Fla., for winters.

They enjoyed many years of sailing the coast of Maine in their sloop the "East Wind." In 1985, they moved to North Haven, Maine, where they remained until Billy’s death in 1988. She then moved to Thomaston, Maine, and in 199, moved to Kittery Point to live with her daughter, Debby.

Audrey was an accomplished watercolorist and had a passion for genealogy. She was very proud to be a member of the Mayflower Society.

She was predeceased by a son, George M Woodman III, who died in 1963; two brothers, Loring O. and Robert F. Jr.; two sisters, Elizabeth and Sally.

Audrey leaves her sister, Esther E. Chandler of Hull, Mass.; three sons, Chandler and his wife, Arlene, of Thomaston, Timothy and his wife, Sharon, of Brookline, N.H., and Jonathan of Seabrook, N.H.; one daughter, Debby and her husband, Charles Ronnquist, of Kittery Point; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great- nephews, and her little dog, Archie. She was very loved and will be greatly missed.

Funeral services will be private, with burial next to her husband at Evergreen cemetery in Westbrook in the spring. Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Louis P. Ulm III

YORK - Louis P. Ulm III, 59, of 48 Birch Hill Road, died Sunday, Feb. 19, 2006, at home following a long illness.

He leaves his wife, Michal (Winton) Ulm; two sons, Christopher R. Ulm of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Joshua S. Ulm and his wife, Kristina Griffith of San Rafael, Calif.; a brother, David W. Ulm of Natick, Mass.; a sister, Ann Marie Jaggi of Grass Valley, Calif.; nieces and nephews.

He was born in Newton, Mass., the son of Louis P. and Antoinette A. (Centrone) Ulm Jr. He graduated from Weston High School, class of 1963, and Ricker College in Houlton, Maine. He served in the Air Force during Vietnam. He was the former owner and operator of the Yankee Stripper in Wells. He was an Eagle Scout, a member of the Kappa Beta fraternity and Who’s Who in America in 1969-1970. He was also a member of COMSCC and the SAAC. ULM - Louis P. Ulm III, 59, of 48 Birch Hill Road, died Sunday, Feb. 19, 2006, at home following a long illness. A funeral service for Louis will be held in the spring. Memorial calling hours will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 23 in the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York. Memorial contributions may be made to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, 44 Binney St., Boston, MA, 02115 or to York Hospital Oncology Dept., 15 Hospital Drive, York, ME, 03909.

Jeanne "Robbie" Roberts Kimball

YORK - Jeanne "Robbie" Roberts Kimball of York passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2006, at the age of 84. She was born in 1921, attended New York schools and graduated from Stamford High School in Stamford, Conn. Robbie later graduated from the Yale School of Nursing; The Greenwich Hospital School of Nursing; and the Newtown Psychiatric Institute in Newtown, Conn. Her nursing specialty was psychiatric nursing.

Married to the late Edwin Kimball in 1943, they would have celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary later this year. She leaves a son, Lee Kimball of South Portland, Maine, and a daughter, Lynn Kimball Gruber, of Upton, Mass., and three grandchildren, Max, Mitch and Jeff Gruber.

Robbie was a member of the First Parish Congregational Church in York where she taught Sunday school and worked on the annual church fair for several years. She was a member of the York Garden Club; Olde York Historical Society; York Golf and Tennis Club and a passionate member of the Ten No Trump Duplicate Bridge Club. During her children’s school years, she was active in school events such as class mother, music boosters and numerous other school activities. Later in life, Robbie and Edwin spent many winters in Portugal, Florida and Tucson.

She was an avid swimmer, golfer and bridge player. She enjoyed reading, and quilting. Robbie will be remembered for her typical Yankee dry sense of humor, love and concern for nature and the environment, her contributions to the community and to her family. As she often noted, she was the only member of the Kimball family to record a hole-in-one.

A memorial service will be held at the First Parish Congregational Church in York, Maine on Saturday, Feb. 18 at 1 p.m. A reception will follow at the Fellowship Hall adjacent to the church. Donations in her memory should be sent to the York Ambulance Association, Salisbury Street, York, ME, 03909.

Edwin "Cider" Kimball

YORK - Edwin "Cider" Kimball passed away after a brief illness on Thursday, Feb. 9 at age 87. A lifelong resident of York, he was the son of Harold and Grace (Whitten) Kimball.

Mr. Kimball spent many years in York politics as selectman, treasurer, administrator to the Board of Selectmen, Planning Board and others.

Married to Jeanne Ann Roberts of Stamford, Conn., in March of 1943, they were married for almost 63 years. He was survived by his wife, who passed away on Feb. 15, 2006. He is now survived by two children, Lee Kimball of South Portland, Maine, and Lynn (Kimball) Gruber, and three grandsons of Upton, Mass.

Mr. Kimball served five years in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theater with the 76th Division. His military service continued with the Army, retiring as a major from the Army Reserve in 1978.

He was a charter member of The Rotary Club of York, an active member of the First Parish Congregational Church, a member, and later chairman, of the Board of Directors of the Kennebunk Savings Bank, and commander of the York American Legion. He was also a member of: the St. Aspinquid Lodge of Masons; the Board of Directors of the Old York Historical Society; and the Board of Directors of the York Golf and Tennis Club. He was an avid golfer and a longtime member of the Maine Seniors Golf Association.

A service was held at the First Parish Congregational Church on York Street in York, followed by a reception and open house at Norma’s Restaurant in York on Route 1.

Thomas Keane

YORK BEACH - Thomas J. Keane, 78, of York Beach and formerly of Auburndale, Mass., died Feb. 24, 2006.

He was the beloved husband of Sarah A. "Sally" Vaccarello Keane. He was also the loving father of Nancy A. Colley and her husband, Kevin, of Wells; Thomas J. Jr. and his wife, Ann, of Shaker Heights, Ohio; Steven M. and his wife, Louise, of Georgetown, Maine; and Kevin M. Keane of Kula, Hawaii. He was the devoted brother of Mary E. Francis and her husband, James, of Vero Beach, Fla., and the Rev. John F. Keane of Yarmouth, Mass., and the late Helen Reynolds. He is also survived by seven grandchildren.

KEANE - Thomas J. Keane, 78, of York Beach and formerly of Auburndale, Mass., died Feb. 24, 2006. There will be no wake. A memorial service will be held at St. Christopher Church, 4 Burrell Lane, York, on Friday at 1 p.m. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, Melanoma Research.

F. Thomas Critchley

YORK HARBOR - F. Thomas Critchley, 94, of Stage Neck Colony, died Wednesday, March 1, 2006, at York Hospital.

Born in Portsmouth, N.H., on April 18, 1911, he was the son of Harry L. and Jonena (MacIvor) Critchley.

He was a graduate of Portsmouth High School, Class of 1929, and Bentley College, Class of 1931.

Mr. Critchley was associated with the brewing industry for many years. He was president of the New England District of the Master Brewers Association of America and was an executive at regional brewing companies in Rhode Island, Massachusetts and New York.

He retired in York Harbor where he was a member of the York Harbor Reading Room. He was an avid golfer and was a member of the York Golf and Tennis Club, the Maine Seniors Golf Association, and the Southern Maine Seniors Golf Association. He especially enjoyed his golfing trips to Bermuda and Scotland and continued playing into his 90s.

Mr. Critchley is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Sise (Newick) Critchley; his daughter and her husband, Faith and Wayne Miller, of North Yarmouth, Maine; his daughter, Elizabeth Ann Childs of Winthrop, Mass.; and his son, F. Thomas Critchley Jr., of Truro, Mass. He is also survived by a grandson, Peter W. Childs and his wife, Teresa, of Norwalk, Conn.

Services will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Kurt Hans Von Kaltenborn

TILTON, N.H. - Kurt Hans Von Kaltenborn, 64, died Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2006, while trying to save residents from a fire in the group home that he and his companion operated for the Lakes Region Community Services Council.

He was born Jan. 25, 1942, in Connecticut, the son of Rolf and Ruth (Brine) Von Kaltenborn. He was the grandson of the commentator H.V. Kaltenborn. Kurt lived in New York as a young child until moving to New Hampshire in the 1950s, where he attended schools in Hill and Bristol and Hanover High School. He received a bachelor’s degree through the university system of the State of Florida and a master’s degree from Rivier College in Nashua.

Kurt spent his career in service to the state of New Hampshire in the Medicaid program and the Child Health Assurance Program. Most recently, he was a service provider through the Lakes Region Community Services Council. He was an Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War and served as a psychiatric corpsman.

He leaves a son, Kuffer Kaltenborn of Portsmouth; a daughter, Katie Kaltenborn of Fort Myers, Fla.; two brothers, K.C. Kaltenborn of Anchorage, Alaska, and Kris Kaltenborn of Naples, Fla.; a sister, Karen Goertzel of Pine Hill, N.Y. and their families; his companion, Trudy Liacos; her son, Erich and their families. A brother, Karl Kaltenborn, predeceased him.

Funeral services will be announced at a later date. Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York, is directing arrangements.

Clare Adams Weaver

KITTERY - Clare Adams Weaver, 86, formerly of Old Ferry Lane in Kittery, died on March 3, 2006, at Sentry Hill in York Harbor.

Born on Sept. 25, 1919, in York, she was the daughter of Harlan and Margaret (Scanlon) Adams. She attended local schools, including the Mary Spofford School and R.W Traip Academy, with the Class of 1936.

She and her husband, Robert Weaver, made their home on Old Ferry Lane in Kittery for more than 61 years.

Mrs. Weaver was active in early years with Girl Scouts in Kittery and was a girl’s basketball coach at Frisbee School. She was an avid reader and enjoyed time volunteering at the Rice Public Library in Kittery. Mrs. Weaver was employed for a number of years at the Portsmouth Consolidated Gas Company.

A loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, she will be dearly missed by those who knew and loved her. She is survived by her daughter, Susan and her husband, Jay Tennant, of Kittery; a son, Robert and his wife, Ursula Weaver, of Westport Isle, Maine; four grandchildren and their spouses, with whom she shared a mutual adoration, Kathy Gay and her husband, Ronald; Jed Weaver and his wife, Sarah; Sean Tennant and his wife, Cristine; and Nathan Tennant and his wife, Katarina; six great grandchildren, Christopher and his wife, Laura Gay; Robert and Jennifer Gay; Sarah, Matthew and Julia Tennant; and Gwen Weaver. She was predeceased by her husband, Robert, and grandson, Timothy Weaver, as well as her three brothers and four sisters.

Arrangements will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Rice Public Library 8 Wentworth Street Kittery, Maine, 03904. Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Alice M. Hering

ELIOT - Alice M. Hering, 99, of Goodwin Road in Eliot, died on March 9, 2006, at York Hospital.

Born Oct. 19, 1906, in Eliot, she was a descendant of the Micum Mcintire clan and was a daughter of Everett Olen and Elizabeth Jane (Forbes) Moulton.

She attended Eliot schools, including the No. 4 school in east Eliot before graduating from Eliot High School with the Class of 1925.

Alice and her first husband, Herman P. Dixon, made their home in Eliot for a number of years where they started their family, until Herman’s death in 1938. She later met and married Oscar Hering and they made their home in York for many years before returning to her family’s farm in Eliot, where they lived together until his death in 1973 and she remained.

She loved her family, home and the flower and vegetable gardens to which she tended. She enjoyed watching the activities of her grandson’s farm next door and taking a stroll down the lane to the old field, where she would encounter deer, wild turkeys and the like. She also enjoyed reading and reciting poetry, playing her organ and making doughnuts.

Alice enjoyed membership in the Eliot American Legion Auxiliary, Eliot Garden Club, Eliot Senior Citizens, T.O.P.S., Faith Circle and her membership for more than 50 years at the Eliot United Methodist Church, and the East Eliot Industrial Club for more than 50 years as well.

She was an avid traveler who enjoyed time spent in 49 of the 50 states and extensive travel abroad to Greece, Africa, Ireland, Switzerland, Rome and Spain where she spent a winter.

She is survived by those who knew and loved her, including her daughter, Lois Kashmer and her husband, Joseph, of York; eight grandchildren, Larry Kashmer and his wife, Nancy, of Eliot, Kim Lytle of York, Jamie Berard and his wife, Barbara, of Spearfish, S.D., Charles Faulkner and his wife, Teresa, of Logan, Ohio, Laurie Faulkner of Ohio, Ted Poling of Ohio, Robin Poling of Ohio and Jennifer Poling of Florida. She is also survived by her 29 great-grandchildren and 14 great-great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husbands, Herman Percival Dixon and Oscar Hering; a daughter, Lauriel Poling formerly of Ohio, and a grandson, David Berard. She was the youngest of eight children and was predeceased by her siblings, a brother, Carroll Moulton; and her sisters, Nathalie Worden, Madeline Philbrick, Jeannie Price, Leila Shubert, Louise Moulton and Ada DeCesare.

A funeral was held in her church on Monday, March 13, 2006, with a time of refreshment and sharing following in the church parish hall. Family flowers only, donations may be made in her memory to her church, the Eliot United Methodist Church on Route 236 in Eliot. Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home.

Leo N. Jarvis

YORK - Leo N. Jarvis, 81, of 96 Scituate Road, died Wednesday, March 8, 2006, at home following a long illness.

His wife, Marilyn (Johnson) Jarvis, died in 2000. He leaves two sons, Gary R. Jarvis of Monson, Mass., and Timothy C. Jarvis of Fall River, Mass; a daughter, Cmdr. Sallyanne Jarvis NC USN of York; a sister, Mary Elizabeth Lang of Orlando, Fla.; four grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

He was born in Holyoke, Mass., the son of Leo N. and Josephine (Collins) Jarvis Sr. He graduated from Springfield Technical High School. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and served as a gunner’s mate, 2nd class on the LST 500. He was a firefighter for the Springfield Fire Department for many years before retiring. He was a former member of the Springfield Elks and the Private’s Club.

Funeral services and burial will be private. Memorial contributions may be made to York Village Fire Department, 1 Firehouse Drive, York, ME, 03909 or to Beacon Hospice, 42 Brickyard Court, York, ME, 03909. Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York is directing arrangements.

Ruth Martin Dickie

YORK - Ruth Martin Dickie, 85, died Monday, Feb. 27, 2006, in a Maryland hospital after a brief illness. She had been living with her daughter in Maryland since October.

She is predeceased by her husband of 28 years, Joseph Dickie, two brothers and two sisters.

She was born in Ashland, N.Y., to Alice Clark Martin and Kenneth Martin on Aug. 27, 1920, moved to Schenectady, N.Y., at age 2 and graduated from Draper High School in 1936. She then attended business school and worked for General Electric for many years. Few know that she sang on WGY in Schenectady and that she drove Army trucks during the war.

Ruth was a member of the York Golf and Tennis Club since 1978, and a respected member of Southern Maine Women’s Golf Association for 25 years.

She is survived by her three daughters, Judith Rice of Rhode Island, Sally Lombardo of New Jersey and Marilou Yost of Maryland; eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and one great great-granddaughter.

Details will be announced at a later date for a memorial service to be held late spring in Maine. Then she can rest peacefully in the state that has held her heart and soul for so many years.
