Anne (Brooks) Avery

YORK BEACH - Anne (Brooks) Avery, 89, formerly of 27 Atlantic Ave., died Friday, March 10, 2006, in Varney Crossing Nursing Care Center in North Berwick.

She was born in Kittery, the daughter of Herbert W. and Sarah (Woodward) Brooks. She graduated from Traip Academy in 1933 and Anna Jaques Hospital School of Nursing in 1936. She had worked for many years as a registered nurse for York Hospital, Portsmouth Hospital in Portsmouth, N.H., and Frisbie Hospital in Rochester, N.H. She was a longtime member of the Union Congregational Church and a member of the York Hospital Registered Nurses Club.

Her husband, Alvin W. Avery, died in 1985. She leaves two sons, William F. and his wife, Rae B. Avery, of South Berwick and Allen R. and his wife, Margaret A. Avery of Dover, N.H.; a stepson, Kenneth Avery of Rochester, N.H., and two stepdaughters; a brother, John Brooks of Alton, N.H.; three sisters, Ruth Slonski of Noank, Conn., Muriel Barnaby of Portsmouth and Jeannette Still of Hampton Falls; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. Two brothers, William and Herbert Brooks, and five sisters, Irene Cauaretta, Sadie Brown, Mildred Emery, Marion Lyman and Doris Perkins, predeceased her. The family would like to thank the staff at Varney Crossing for the wonderful care provided to Anne.

A memorial service for Mrs. Avery was held on Saturday, March 18 in the Union Congregational Church, Church Street, York Beach. Burial will be private in First Parish cemetery in the spring. Memorial contributions may be made to the Varney Crossing Nursing Care Center, Activities Fund, 47 Elm Street, North Berwick, ME, 03906. Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York is directing arrangements.

Lillian Bradish Biewend

CAPE NEDDICK - Lillian Bradish Biewend, 97, of Cape Neddick, died Sunday, March, 19 2006, at home.

She was born in Hallock, Minn., on Aug. 13, 1908, the daughter of John H. and Kathleen H. (Suffel) Bradish.

Lillian was a graduate of the University of North Dakota Class of 1930, and a Tri Delta sorority member. She is the recent widow of Cameron Biewend and was predeceased by one brother, John H. Bradish Jr.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, David L. and Rebecca (Lewis) Linney; granddaughter, Shanlee D. Ginchereau; great-grandchildren, Mikaylee M., Livia C. and Breckyn C. Ginchereau, all of Cape Neddick; a cousin, Mary-Leigh C. Smart of York; sister-in-law, Margaret Ernest Bradish; and nephew, Peter K. Bradish, both of Florida.

Lillian’s passion for the outdoors nurtured a lifetime of gardening and during the winters she enjoyed figure skating and needlepoint. It was her pleasure to support civic projects and she worked for various organizations. She was petite in stature but cast a distinguishing shadow over her family and friends. The family is most appreciative of her excellent care for the past 12 years. Always encouraging, sensible, wise, honest, practical and fun-loving, she will be missed by many.

Lillian was a member of St. George’s Episcopal Church in York Harbor. Interment will be private and an early summer memorial service will be announced at a later date. Those who wish to remember Lillian in a special way may make a gift in her memory to the Lyle Littlefield Ornamentals Trial Garden Endowment Fund, to insure the garden’s continuance for decades to come, as well as research, educational and outreach activities at the University of Maine. Helen Matthews Jaster

YORK - Helen Matthews Jaster, 82, died March 7, 2006, after a long illness.

Helen could trace her ancestry in the York area back several centuries. She was related to the Matthews, Todds, Brewsters and Youngs. Among them, her great-great grandfather was James S. Brewster, who served during the Civil War as a landsman on the USS Agawam under future Adm. George Dewey. Later, he was attached to the 20th Maine Volunteers and was wounded at the Battle of Five Forks.

Helen attended Cape Neddick Baptist School and York High School. She was a nurse, as were three of her six sisters. She met her husband of 48 years, Frank, while he was stationed in New England. They were married on Nov. 4, 1944, resided briefly in Rhode Island and then made their home in Philadelphia, where her children were all born. She was an emergency room supervisor for St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children for more than 40 years.

Helen was predeceased by her parents, Nellie Todd Matthews and Charles Matthews; her husband, Francis X. Jaster; her brother, Floyd Todd; five sisters, Dorothy Hammond of Boxboro, Mass., Phyllis Grimes, Thelma Matthews, Florence Pugh and Clara Parshley, all of Cape Neddick; and her grandson, Nicholas Simonetti of Philadelphia, Pa.

She will be profoundly missed by her six children, Marycarol Sweeney and her husband, Maury, of Cape Neddick; Alice Nanartowicz and her husband, Len; Margaret Rose Jaster Ph.D.; Anne Iannitto; Michael Jaster and his wife, Debbie; and Elizabeth Gallelli and her husband, Jim, of Pennsylvania, Pa. She will also be missed by her seven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and her sister, Aloma Bowie and her husband, Al, of Fort Meyers, Fla.

Helen was a gentle and kind person who was the heart of her family. They looked to her for peace, love, advice and encouragement. She greeted her children with love and never had a harsh word or criticism for them. There will be a tremendous void in all their lives with her passing.

Rita A. (Ciammetti) Sette

YORK HARBOR - Rita A. (Ciammetti) Sette, 81, died Thursday, March 23, 2006, at Sentry Hill.

She leaves a son, Joseph D. Sette of Philadelphia; three daughters, Laura S. MacNaughton of Cape Neddick, Camille Curtin of Philadelphia, and Lisa Unterkoefler of Reading, Pa; two brothers, Pasquale Ciammetti of Plymouth Meeting, Pa., and John Ciammetti of Philadelphia; a sister, Jean Zapposoddi of Westmont, N.J.; 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services and burial will take place in Philadelphia, Pa. Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York, is directing local arrangements.

David N. Straw

BROOKLINE, Mass. - David N. Straw, 65, formerly of the Seacoast area, died Friday, Feb. 17, 2006, after a long illness.

"Rocky" was born Sept. 26, 1941, in Portsmouth, N.H., the son of Neal and Ellen A. (Cole) Straw. He attended Mt. Saint Charles Academy in Woonsocket, R.I., Cheverus Academy in Portland and the University of New Hampshire. He was employed at Booth Fisheries and Hammer Industrial Supply Co. before moving to Boston where he had a landscaping business. He was an avid photographer and loved to travel. He will be missed by many friends.

Per his request, there will be no funeral services. Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York, is in charge of services.

Paul E. Lipka

LIPKA - Paul E. Lipka, 76, died Friday, March 31, 2006. A memorial service for Mr. Lipka will take place on Wednesday, April 5, 2006, at 11 a.m. in Sohier Park at Nubble Light. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to York Hospital, "Friend Raising" 15 Hospital Drive, York, ME, 03909. Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York, Maine, is directing arrangements.

Wilburn C. "Cy" Hunt

YORK - Wilburn C. "Cy" Hunt, 93, of 50 Brave Boat Harbor Road, died Saturday, April 1, 2006, in the Harbor Home.

His wife, Nellie May (Lair) Hunt, died in 2003. He leaves a son, John L. and his wife, Claudia C. Hunt, of York; a daughter, Carol A. Mease of Woolwich, Maine; three grandchildren, Jason Mease, Jennifer Hunt and Samantha Hunt; a great-grandson, Saige Mease; and his extended family. A sister, Hazel, predeceased him.

He served in the Navy for 20 years and was a veteran of World War II. He worked for Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as a rigger for 20 years before retiring. He also worked as gate keeper for 10 years at the Memorial Bridge. He was a 32nd degree Mason, a member of the St. Andrew Masonic Lodge and the Kora Shrine. He was a retired member of the York Village Fire Department and a member of the United Methodist Church of York-Ogunquit.

A calling hour for Mr. Hunt was held Tuesday at Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York, Maine. Burial will be private in the First Parish Cemetery, York. Memorial contributions may be made to the Harbor Home, "Activities Fund" 6 Norwood Farms Road, York Harbor, Maine, 03911.

Onice Lee Lewis

MOODY, Maine - Retired Col. Onice Lee Lewis, 96, died Tuesday, March 28, 2006, at York Hospital after a brief illness.

Lou was born June 7, 1909, in Jackson, Miss., to Julia and Irving Lewis.

He entered the Army Air Corps in 1942 from Mobile, Ala., at the age of 33. He served eight years with the 8th Air Force in Europe. He was assigned to the 447th Bomb Group and received the Air Force Commendation Medal in 1963. During his service in Europe, he met and married the love of his life, Maureen Albery, in Paris, France. The rest of his military career was spent in the United States and Greenland. Upon discharge from the Air Force, they made their home in southern Maine. Lou was the highest ranking retired military officer in the state at the time. He and Maureen spent 56 wonderful years together until she died in November 2002.

The Lewises spent many hours watching the Red Sox and tennis; they especially loved Wimbledon. They had many close friends in York Harbor and Moody. The Lewises will be missed by their friends and care givers: Bob and Earlene Martel of York, Steve Campbell and Dick Ross of York, Kerri VanSchaak of Moody and Jeanne Dunn of York.

Mr. and Mrs. Lewis had no children or close relatives locally. Their niece, Edna Dathan of England, visited Maine many times. There will be no funeral as both of these wonderful people gave their bodies for research to the New England College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Paul E. Lipka

YORK - Paul E. Lipka, 76, died Friday, March 31, 2006.

He leaves his wife of 49 years, Evelyn (Schulz) Lipka; two sons, Kent D. Lipka of Biddeford and Kirk D. and his wife, Kerrie M. Lipka, of Southborough, Mass.; a daughter, Nara K. and her husband, Lawrence R. Paccico of Milford, Mass.; a sister, Joan and her husband, Tom Prather, of Cary, Ill.; three grandchildren, Kourtney L. Lipka, Jillian M. Paccico and Cailyn R. Paccico. A daughter, Narissa K. Lipka, predeceased him.

He was born in LaSalle, Ill., the son of Paul and Adeline (Strauch) Lipka. He was a graduate of LaSalle High School and Illinois State University. He worked as a teacher in New Canaan, Conn., before retiring in 1992. He was a Sohier Park Committee chairman and volunteer. He also was a York Hospital volunteer. He was a weather station enthusiast. He was co-founder of EMT in Trumbull, Conn., the director of EMT training, crew chief EMT and Appalachia Service Project member.

Alice C. (Gallagher) Wiggin

YORK BEACH - Alice C. (Gallagher) Wiggin, 86, of 11 Long Beach Ave., died Saturday, April 1, 2006, at home.

She was born in York, the daughter of William and Anne (Stover) Gallagher. She graduated from York High School in 1937 and was a member of the Union Congregational Church.

Alice loved to write short stories throughout her life. She leaves her husband of 64 years, Raymond L. Wiggin; two sons, David C. and his wife, Alison Wiggin, of Rockport, and Donald P. and his wife, Violetta Wiggin, of Berwick; a daughter, Dianne E. Prindervile of Simi Valley, Calif.; a brother, James Gallagher of Richmond, Maine; two sisters, Billie and her husband, Charles Chase, of Wilmington, N.C., and Hazel Drown of New Hampshire; a brother-in-law, John and his wife, Sonya Wiggin, of South Berwick; and four grandchildren.

Funeral services and burial will private in Gracelawn Memorial Park, Auburn, Maine. Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York, is directing arrangements.

Dr. Patricia M. (Walsh) Ryan

PLYMOUTH, Mass. - Dr. Patricia M. (Walsh) Ryan, 60, of Plymouth, Mass., died Monday, April 3, 2006, at the home of her son, Michael E. Ryan, of Plymouth, Mass.

Born Nov. 16, 1945, in Lawrence, Mass., she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Frances (Connolly) Walsh. Dr. Ryan attended St. Mary’s in Lawrence, Mass.

Dr. Ryan graduated from Fitchburg State College in 1967. She was a registered nurse and later taught nursing at Quincy College. She received her master’s of education degree from Bridgewater State College in the 1970s and went on to work in administration at Quincy College, where she eventually became the dean of academic affairs. She received her doctorate of education degree in 1993 from the University of Massachusetts. In 1995, she left Quincy College and was inaugurated as president of Harcum College in Bryn Mawr, Pa.

In 2002, she decided to move back to New England to spend more time with her family. She was inaugurated as president of York County Community College in Wells, Maine, in 2002 and worked there until her death. She was active in the Visiting Nurses Association of Southern Maine and Leadership Maine.

In addition to her son, Michael, she is survived by her son, Joseph E. Ryan; daughters-in-law, Lisa G. Ryan and Carol I. Ryan; granddaughters, Kathryn J. Ryan, Jennifer P. Ryan and Julia G. Ryan, all of Plymouth, Mass.; her brother, Thomas P. Walsh of Andover, Mass., and her former husband, Joseph E. Ryan of South Boston, Mass.

Visiting hours were held Thursday at the Shepherd Funeral Home, 216 Main St., Kingston, Mass. A funeral service was held Friday, April 7 at the Mayflower Congregational Church in Kingston, Mass. Donations may be made to the York County Community College (YCCC) Foundation in Dr. Ryan’s name to support her final initiative, a new nursing program, 112 College Drive, Wells, ME, 04090.

Ann T. (DelOrfano) Neary

YORK - Ann T. (DelOrfano) Neary, 85, of 6 Buck St., died unexpectedly Friday, April 7, 2006, in the Harbor Home.

She was born in Chelsea, Mass., the daughter of Joseph and Concetta (Vina) DelOrfano. She had worked for Kennedy’s in Boston before retiring in 1980.

She leaves her husband, Donald M. Neary; two brothers, Albert of Florida and Joseph of Massachusetts; three sisters, Eleanor and Dorothy of Florida and Nora of Massachusetts; many nieces and nephews. Funeral services and burial will be private. Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York, Maine, is directing arrangements.

Raymond G. Rousseau

GULFPORT, Fla. - Raymond G. Rousseau, 86, formerly of York, died Tuesday, March 7, 2006, in St. Petersburg General Hospital.

He was born in Chelmsford, Mass., and moved to Spring Hill, Fla., in 1980 coming from Lake Arrowhead, Maine, before moving to Gulfport.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

Mr. Rousseau was a planner and estimator for the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

He was an avid sports fan, and enjoyed golf, dancing and fishing. He was a member of St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church.

He is survived by one son, Barry Rousseau of Spring Hill; two daughters, Raylene McClure of Spencer, W.Va., and Judy Hutchins of Gulfport; two grandchildren; and several sisters.

Arrangements were by the Turner Funeral Homes, Spring Hill.

Glen R. Dusseault

WELLS - Glen R. Dusseault, 44, passed away suddenly on April 10, 2006, near his home on Prince of Wales Island, Alaska.

Born in Sanford on Dec 5, 1961, he was the son of Richard and Betty (Rogers) Dusseault of Wells.

Glen grew up in Wells and was a fisherman almost from birth. He graduated from Wells High School in 1980 and later followed his childhood dream of moving to southeast Alaska where he spent the past 24 years. Glen was a free spirit and an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed a rugged subsistence lifestyle. His livelihood was fishing and crabbing commercially; hunting, trapping and working on various construction projects that included building his own home at Naukati Bay. When times were tough he often said, "It’s not a hassle - it’s an adventure." His sense of humor, kindness and generosity will be greatly missed by the many friends and family who shared his adventures here and in Alaska. He will always be remembered with great admiration for having the courage to pursue his dream.

Besides his parents, he is survived by five sisters, Norma Bee and her husband, Herbert, Bee of Wells, Joan Nixon of Wells, Denise Dusseault of Portland, Brenda Berenty of Apex, N.C., and Anne Farnsworth of Arundel; several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
