Evelyn F. Hamilton

DOVER, N.H. - Evelyn F. Hamilton, 88, of Dover, N.H., died on Thursday, April 13, 2006, at Langdon Place.

Born in Lochmere, N.H., on Nov. 12, 1917, she was the daughter of Charles and Mary Fifield.

A former longtime resident of Laconia, N.H., she also resided in Derry, Stratham, and Meredith, all in New Hampshire, before moving to Dover in 1994.

She was an artist, a world traveler, an avid crossword expert, a literacy tutor and a talented quilter. She loved music, dancing and theater.

During her lifetime, she gave generously to her family and gifted her grandson, who was dying of cancer, with a once in a lifetime trip to England. She was a lover of animals and contributed throughout her life to many animal causes.

She is survived by her four children, Anne Hollingworth and husband, Guy, of York, Jane Hamilton, Mary Lou Bagley and husband, Bob, of South Berwick and John Hamilton and wife, Jody, of Strafford, N.H. She is also survived by grandchildren, Mark Clay, Frank Clay, Charlie Moulton, Kristin Clay Marks, Christina Milotte, Ian Milotte and Melanie Bagley Turner; as well as three great-grandchildren, Bill and Breanna Marks and Jeremy Turner.

She was predeceased by her husband, William J. Hamilton, and grandson, William L. Clay.

Lorraine A. (Cabana) Cormier

WILMINGTON, Mass. - Mrs. Lorraine A.(Cabana) Cormier, 64, of Wilmington, died April 5, 2006, at the Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston after a brief illness.

Mrs. Cormier was born August 7, 1941, in North Troy, Vt., the daughter of Edward and Beulah (Morse) Cabana.

She came to Massachusetts at a very young age and spent a good part of her youth in Somerville, Mass., where she met her close and dearest friend, Dotty, she and Dotty came to Wilmington for summer vacations, where she met the love of her life, Warren Cormier. They married and had six children. They lived in Chelmsford, Lowell, and Andover, Mass., prior to moving back to Wilmington in 1980.

Lorraine retired from the Internal Revenue Service in Andover as a computer programmer after 24 years, so that she could spend more time with her children and grandchildren. They came first, no matter what. Lorraine lived to take care of her family, she loved to cook for them, have big Sunday dinners, play cards, listen to country music and she made every day a holiday.

She also enjoyed watching her grandchildren’s sporting events and was so proud of each and every one of them. Lorraine had a persona that drew people toward her. When her family came home with friends, she made sure everyone was welcome, she was never judgmental. She will be greatly missed by many.

Lorraine was the beloved wife of the late Warren H. Cormier; the devoted mother of Kim Tourigny and her husband, Ken, of York, Warren H. Cormier Jr. and his wife, Sharon, Cathy Downs and her husband, Glenn, Christopher Cormier, Lori Penney and her husband, Tim, all of Wilmington, and Scott Cormier and his wife, Sam, of Windham, N.H.; dear sister of Wayne Cabana and his wife, Kathy, of Virginia, and Donna Wurtz and her husband, Clyde, of Nashua, N.H.; loving grandmother of 15 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Her funeral services were held on Monday, April 10, at the Wilmington United Methodist Church. Interment took place in Wildwood Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Nichols Funeral Home, Inc., Wilmington. Memorial donation’s in Lorraine’s name may be made to "Paul’s Pals", c/o Reading Cooperative Bank, 230 Lowell St., Wilmington, MA, 01887.

Donald J. Dean

OSSINING, N.Y. - Donald J. Dean, 77, died Wednesday, April 12, 2006, in Hollywood, Fla., after a 25-year battle with cancer.

He leaves his wife of 49 years, Brit (Oian) Dean, of Florida; a son, Donald J. Dean Jr. of Mt. Marion, N.Y.; a daughter, Donna A. Katz of Cortland Manor, N.Y.; a brother, Robert A. Dean of St. Petersburg, Fla.; two sisters, Mary Lee Borges of Pembroke Pines, Fla., and Patricia D. Daley of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; three grandchildren, Avery Katz of North Carolina, Alyssa Katz of New York and Jesse Dean of California; two sisters-in-law, Kari Fernald formerly of York Beach and Tove Webber of Cape Neddick; and a brother-in-law, Magne Oian of Rye, N.H.

He was born in Ossining, N.Y., and was a lifelong resident. He was a 50-year member of the Monitor House, Company 4 in Ossining. He was a lifetime member of the Elks. He owned and operated a taxi business in Ossining for many years. He enjoyed vacationing in Maine, New Hampshire, Florida and loved the dog races and Jai Ali.

A graveside service was held on Tuesday, April 18, in First Parish Cemetery, York, Maine. Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York, Maine is directing arrangements.

George E. Parks

LAWRENCE, Mass. - George E. Parks, 70 ,of Lawrence, Mass., died Thursday, April 13, 2006, at Lawrence General Hospital.

He was born Dec. 21, 1935, in Portsmouth, N.H., the son of the late George L. and Ruth M. (Holmes) Parks.

He attended Portsmouth schools. During the Korean War, he served in the Navy.

He was a bartender and manager of many clubs in New Hampshire and Massachusetts, including Salisbury Beach, Lowell and Dover, N.H. He last managed the Berkeley Club in Lawrence. Prior to that, he owned and operated a beauty salon in Portsmouth for several years.

He loved to play the accordion and sing at family gatherings, and he enjoyed golf, darts and cooking.

He is survived by a son, Kenneth, of Lawrence; a granddaughter, Jessica Parks; brother and sister-in-law, Chanel and Josephine Simard of Salem, N.H.; a godchild, Paul Simard of Milford, N.H.; stepchildren, Jeffrey, David and Susan Akerson, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Cremation took place in Linwood Crematory. The family received friends on Monday, April 17, at Cataudella Funeral Home, 126 Pleasant Valley St., Methuen, Mass. A funeral service was also held. Burial of the cremains will follow at Central cemetery in Rye, N.H. Memorial contributions in Mr. Parks’ memory may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Paula (McGillis) Hickey

YORK - Paula (McGillis) Hickey, 53, of 381 Southside Road, died Sunday, April 16, 2006, in York Hospital after a battle with cancer.

She was born in Boston, Mass., the daughter of Raymond and Elaine (Dick) McGillis and had lived in Roslindale and Hyde Park for many years before moving to York. She leaves her husband of 29 years, Edward R. Hickey; three sons, Edward R. Hickey, Neal J. Hickey and Patrick M. Hickey all of York; a daughter, Katelyn A. Hickey of York; two brothers, William McGillis of Norwood, Mass., and Daniel McGillis of Plymouth, Mass.; five sisters, Claire McGlaughlin of Danvers, Mass., Elaine Spears of Virginia, Janice Lowe of East Bridgewater, Mass., Linda Wendell of Bradford, Mass., and Donna Comperchio of Dedham, Mass.; many nieces and nephews.

H. Howard Webster

NEW LONDON, N.H. - Watercolor artist H. Howard Webster, 94, died on Saturday, April 15, at Woodcrest Village in New London, N.H. He was born in Malden, Mass., the son of Mary and Horace F. Webster, and the youngest of four children.

An accomplished watercolor artist, Howard was a 1933 graduate of Vesper George School of Art in Boston. After freelancing in Boston for four years, he went to New York City and joined the advertising firm of Muir & Company. He was there for 40 years, retiring in 1977 as associate art director and vice president of the agency. He resided in Rockville Centre, N.Y., until moving to Lyon Brook in New London in 1992.

As a young man in Malden, Mr. Webster was an eagle scout and master councilor of DeMolay. He and his wife were active church members, and after moving to New York, they became members of the Rockville Centre Congregational Church. Howard sang in the choir for 40 years, taught Sunday school, served as a deacon and elder and in other church organizations. After moving to New London, they joined the Kearsarge Community Presbyterian Church. Howard moved into Woodcrest Village in 2004, which provided him the environment and opportunity to remain socially and physically active and continue his love of painting.

Mr. Webster was predeceased by his wife of 59 years, Evelyn Spraker Webster, of Malden, Mass., and York, Maine, who died in 1996; brothers, Milton and Newell; and sister, Barbara Slater. He is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Carolyn and Ted Lockhart of New London, and Janice and Paul Sahler of Wilmot; four grandchildren, Jeffery Lockhart of San Carlos, Calif., and his wife, Becky; Anne Lockhart of South Sutton, N.H.; Mark Sahler of Eagle, Colo., and his wife, Kelly; and Jennifer Santora of New Canaan, Conn., and her husband, Jim. Also surviving are six great-grandchildren, Austin and Garrett Lockhart; Conall and Cian Sahler; Molly and Will Santora; a niece, Joann Price of Lowell, Mass.; and a nephew, Loring Webster of Brookline, N.H.

Leo A. Flynn

FLYNN - Leo A. Flynn, 50, of Lake Placid, Fla., formerly a lifelong resident of York, died on Thursday, Jan. 12, 2006, in Florida. Public graveside committal services with military honors will be held on Friday May 5, 2006, at 2 p.m. at the First Parish cemetery in York. Firefighters may stage at the York Beach Fire Department no later than 13:15 hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the York American Legion Post No. 56 127 Long Sands Road, York, Maine, 03909, or to the York Beach or York Village Fire Departments in his honor. Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Thomas Bourne

NEEDHAM, Mass., and CINCINNATI, Ohio - Thomas Bourne of Needham, Mass., and Cincinnati, Ohio, the beloved husband of Helen Bourne, died Easter Sunday, April 16, 2006.

Born in Eagle Creek, Ky., he played tennis until he was 80, learned woodworking at 70 and planted a vegetable garden every spring of his life. He was the salt of the earth and will be sorely missed.

He was a lover of family, gardening, fishing and the diamond business.

He was father to Catherine Sherman and husband, Richard, of York, Patricia Palmer and husband, Prather, of Weston, Mass., Barbara Dwyer and husband, Patrick, of Cromwell, Conn.; and seven loving grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

A private family memorial service will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to The Salvation Army, P.O. Box 55876, Boston, Mass., 02205-5876.

Alice E. (Bixby) Ford

PORTSMOUTH, N.H. - Alice E. (Bixby) Ford, 94, died Wednesday April 12, 2006, at the Edgewood Centre in Portsmouth, N.H.

She was born in Wilmot, N.H., on Nov. 3, 1911, the daughter of William D. and Mabel (Clay) Bixby. Spending her early years in Wilmot, she attended Proctor Academy in Andover, N.H. Mrs. Ford moved to Cape Neddick in 1940 and resided there for 63 years. She was a kind and loving wife, mother and grandmother who enjoyed gardening, cooking and travel. She and her husband had traveled across the United States several times, had been to Hawaii and enjoyed an excursion to the White Mountains every fall.

Mrs. Ford also kept up with local, state and national politics and enjoyed a lively conversation about the various candidates with friends and family. She had been a Brownie leader and a member of the Ladies Circle at her Cape Neddick church. Mrs. Ford had been a hostess and waitress during the summer season at Wheeler’s Inn in Cape Neddick. She was also an 82-year member of the North Wilmot Congregational Church. Her husband of 58 years, Crosby D. Ford, died in 1987.

Members of her family surviving include a daughter, Betty A. Ford of Cape Neddick; a son, Richard E. Ford of Brattleboro, Vt.; two grandchildren, Richard B. Ford of Maynard, Mass., and Elaina F. Hume of Alton, N.H.; four great grandchildren, Paul, Michael, Nina and Isaac; nieces and nephews.

There are no calling hours. A memorial service was held Saturday, April 22, at the First Congregational Church in Wilmot Center, N.H., with Mrs. Ford’s nephew, the Rev. David Randlett, officiating. Interment will be in the Riverview Cemetery, Barnstead, N.H. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in her memory may be made to the North Wilmot Congregational Church c/o Fred Ogmundson, 37 Breezy Hill Road, Wilmot, N.H., 03287. Charlotte V. Rhodes

YORK BEACH - Charlotte V. Rhodes, 84, of 8 Church St., died Monday, April 17, 2006, in York Hospital surrounded by her family and friends after a period of failing health.

She was born April 22, 1921, in York, the daughter of William E. and H. Josephine (Nowell) Baston. She attended the York School System and graduated from York High School with the Class of 1939. During World War II, she served in the Women’s Army Corps in Arlington, Va. She was one of the co-founders and the first president of the Women’s Auxiliary of the Boardman-Ellis VFW Post in York.

In the late 1940s, along with her husband and father, she owned and operated the Ye Olde Hardware Shoppe in downtown York Beach. A lifelong member of the Union Congregational Church in York Beach, she was a member of its Ladies Aid and Diaconate.

Charlotte and her husband, Eugene "Gene," enjoyed traveling. They went across the continental United States 12 times and also journeyed to Europe, Mexico, Alaska and Hawaii. Her husband of 54 years, Eugene E. Rhodes, died in 1994.

She leaves a daughter, Bette J. and her husband, David B. Douzanis, of York Beach; a granddaughter, Nancy J. and her husband, Andrew R. Mather, of Wells; two great-grandchildren, Brendan A. Mather and Madeline C. Mather, the apples of her eye; three nieces, Mary Crow and her husband, Raymond, of Lawrence, Mass., Sister Mary Michelle of Columbus, Ohio, and Kathleen Walls and her husband, Carl, of Portsmouth, N.H.; a cousin, Eleanor Morrill of York; and a dear friend, Barbara Currier of Cape Neddick, who was like a daughter to her. A sister, Elizabeth Moore, died in 1974.

A memorial service for Mrs. Rhodes was held on Friday, April 21, in the Union Congregational Church on Church Street in York Beach. Burial will be private in the First Parish cemetery in York. Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army, 15 Middle St., Portsmouth, N.H., 03801, or to the Union Congregational Church, P.O. Box 969, York Beach, ME, 03910. Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York, is directing arrangements.

Joseph Francis A. Grammel

LEOMINSTER, Mass. -- Joseph Francis A. Grammel, 78, of 39 Helena St., died Tuesday morning, Aug.1, 2006, while at his York, Maine, home after a brief illness.

He is survived by his loving wife, Catherine Ann (McDonald), of 51 years; two sons, Mark D. Grammel of Leominster, Mass., and Scott A. Grammel of Chicago, Ill.; a daughter, Kerry A. Wyman and husband, Rick, of Bellevue, Wash.; his mother, Mrs. Kaino Seppala of Sterling, Mass.; three grandchildren, Taylor, Brandon and Hailey Wyman; and a niece, Linda Ware of Pleasantville, Calif.

Mr. Grammel was born on March 26, 1928, in Taunton, Mass., the son of Joseph F. and Kaino (Seppala) Grammel and had lived most of his life in the Leominster area.

He graduated from Fitchburg High School in the Class of 1946 and later graduated from Bentley College in 1950 with a degree in accounting.

In 1955, Joseph and Catherine Ann were married and settled in Leominster. After having worked as a staff accountant in Gardner and Worcester, in 1960 Mr. Grammel started his own certified public accounting firm.

In 1965, he became the founding owner and senior partner of Grammel and Keogh, CPAs of Leominster.

After selling his practice, he was employed by Bovenzi, Inc.

Mr. Grammel served in the Army, attaining the rank of sergeant, and was a veteran of the Korean War.

He loved his family and was especially proud of his three grandchildren.

He loved reading, his home in York Harbor, Maine, and the Red Sox.

He enjoyed being a member of the Worcester and Fitchburg Art Museums, The Old York Historical Society and a board member of Stage NRCK HO Association.

A funeral service was held on Saturday, Aug. 5, at the Silas F. Richardson & Son Funeral Home in Leominster. Burial will be in St. Leo's Cemetery, Leominster.

Leonard "Lenny" W. Hadley

HADLEY -- Leonard "Lenny" W. Hadley, 90, of 30 Mallard Drive, died Friday, Sept. 29, 2006, in York Hospital. The funeral service for Mr. Hadley will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 28 in the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York, Maine. Calling hours will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. before the funeral. Memorial contributions may be made to the York Senior Center, 36 Main St., York, Maine 03909.

Leonard "Lenny" W. Hadley

YORK -- Leonard "Lenny" W. Hadley, 90, of 30 Mallard Drive, died Friday, Sept. 29, 2006, in York Hospital.

He was born Dec. 21, 1915, in Enfield, N.H., the son of George and Evelyn "Eva" (Whittier) Hadley, and lived in Concord, N.H., before moving to Springfield, Mass., with his family.

He had worked for the Fuller Brush Co. for 30 years, and was a field manager in various locations. He was an active member of the York Senior Center and enjoyed playing cribbage. He was a former mason.

He leaves a son, David L. Hadley and his wife, Megan, of Guilford, Conn.; a sister-in-law, Barbara Hadley of Rhode Island; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. His wife, Katherine L. (King) Hadley, of almost 60 years; a sister, Eva Hadley; and a son, Peter J. Hadley, all predeceased him.
