Bernice L. Abbott
1999-04-08

Bernice L. Abbott, 85, of East Arlington, Vermont, died Tuesday morning, March 27 at the Crescent Manor Care Center in Bennington where she had resided for the past few weeks.

Born in Montpelier, Vermont on May 21, 1913, she was the daughter of John and Una (Wrisley) Lawrence. She grew up in Montpelier where she attended school and was the Valedictorian of St. Michaels High School class of 1930.

Due to the death of her mother at a young age she was raised by her uncle Charles Paige and his family. On July 1, 1939 in East Dorset, Vermont, she married Actor T. Abbott Jr. Mr. Abbott died in 1985.

Over the years, due to Mr. Abbott's work, they had lived in many areas throughout the eastern seaboard, retiring to Boothbay.

Following Mr. Abbott's death, Mrs. Abbott relocated to East Arlington to be nearer her daughter, April. She became active in the community volunteering with the Senior Volunteer Retirement Program, Bennington County Hospice, The Lupis Foundation and working at the Martha Canfield Library. She was a communicant of St. Margaret Mary's Catholic Church and a member of the church's sodality group.

Survivors include her daughter, April Erwinski of East Arlington; a son, Actor Abbott of Venice, Florida; a brother, John Lawrence of Tacoma, Washington; three grandchildren, Sara Abbott, Katherine and Michael Erwinski; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by a brother, Arthur Lawrence, and a sister, Mary Moran.

The Liturgy of Christian Death and Burial were held on Monday, April 5 at 11 a.m. at St. Margaret Mary's Church with Rev. George Dupuis pastor celebrating the Mass.

Transfer will be made by the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home to the Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home where a funeral mass was held Wednesday, April 7. Burial followed in the Abbott lot in Evergreen cemetery in Boothbay.

Should friends desire memorial gifts in memory of Mrs. Abbott may be made to the Vermont Heart Association or the charity of the donor's choice in care of the Arlington Chapel of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home, P.O. Box 528, Arlington, VT 05250.

Mr. Sidney Earl Abbott services

TURNER - A Memorial Service for Sidney Earl Abbott, who died on Thursday, April 6, 2000, will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 15 at Calvary Baptist Church in Turner.

Refreshments and time to visit will follow at the church.

In lieu of flowers, gifts may be sent to the Sidney and Lillian Abbott Memorial Scholarship Fund at Central Maine Medical Center School of Nursing, 300 Main St., Lewiston, ME 04240.

Elvia M. (Cole) Abbott

NORWAY- Elvia M. (Cole) Abbott, 80, of Ledgeview Nursing Home, formerly of Bryant Pond, died Sunday, April 30, 2000, at Stephens Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Abbott was born in Greenwood, November 8, 1919, the daughter of the late Harry and Elsie (Dunham) Cole, and attended the Greenwood schools. In 1939, she married Clifford Abbott, who predeceased her in 1963. She was a resident of Bryant Pond for the greater portion of her life, but had resided in South Paris, and Sumner. A mill worker by vocation, Mrs. Abbott had been associated with Penley's Mill, of West Paris, for over 35 years, from which she retired. She was a member of the Women's Relief Corps, of West Sumner, until its disbandment recently. She found great joy in her many grandchildren, and they sustained her in the later years of her life. Mrs. Abbott is survived by a daughter, Joyce Walker, of South Paris; a brother, Everett Cole, of Bethel; three half sisters, Nada Sessions, of Bethel, Nancy Palmer, of Bryant Pond, and Freda Hart, of Bethel; a half brother, Robert Hinkley, of East Bethel; six grandchildren, Debbie Campbell, Paul Walker, Paula Cole, Pauline Morgan, Raymond Walker, Jr., and Russell Walker; 17 great grandchildrenand a great, great granddaughter, as well as many nieces and nephews. Graveside memorial services will be held at the Elmwood Cemetery, East Sumner, on Thursday, May 4, at 10 a.m., to which friends are invited. Friends who wish may memorial donations in her memory to: Tri-Town Rescue, PO. Box 275, W. Paris, ME 04289. Arrangements are by the Andrews Funeral Home, South Woodstock.

Natalie B. Ackroyd
1998-07-23

Natalie B. Ackroyd, 85, of Ocean Point Road, East boothbay, died Monday at Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport, after a brief illness.

Born in Needham, Mass. April 24, 1913, the daughter of Fredrick and Mabel Lucas Bosworth, she was educated in Needham public schools, and was a graduate of The Boston Business School.

A former resident of Needham, she and her husband Rolly were summer residents of Ocean Point since 1938, until his retirment in 1970, when they moved here to stay.

She was the unofficial caretaker of Ocean Point during the winter months, when she kept keys to all the cottages and let workmen in to do repairs. She was also the keeper of everyone's plants, at one time having 167 plants to care for.

She was a life member of the Boothbay Region Historical Society, a life member of the Garden Club Federation of Maine, Inc., former secretary of the Medomak District, and life and honorary member of the Boothbay Region Garden Club and its corresponding secretary for many years. She and her husband, Rolly helped organize the Garden Club's Scholarship Fund. She was also a former member of the Wawenock Power Squadron, former member of the board of directors for Ocean Point Colony Trust, the Damariscotta River Association and a member of the St. Andrews Free Bed Fund.

Mrs. Ackroyd enjoyed working in her garden with her flowers and visiting with her many friends.

She was predeceased by her husband, Roland Ackroyd, who died in 1979.

Survivors include three cousins, Mabelle Haynes of Boothbay Harbor and Naples, Fla., George Watson of Laguna Beach, Calif. and Bill Weatherbee of Ormond Beach, Fla.

Visiting hours will be held from 6-8 p.m., Thursday, July 23 at Simmons & Harrington Funeral Home, 51 Townsend Avenue, Boothbay Harbor. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, July 24 at the funeral home with the Rev. Allan Wells-Goodwin officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Boothbay. Arrangements are by Simmons & Harrington Funeral Home.

Ruth L. Adams
1999-12-23

Ruth Louise Adams, 77, of Waterville, died November 20 at Lakewood Manor Nursing Home.

Born in Boothbay Harbor, a daughter of Arnold and Madeline (Auld) Brewer Sr., she graduated from Boothbay Harbor High School in 1940 and then from Farmington State Normal School in 1944 with a bachelor of science degree. From 1944 to 1951 she taught home economics in Buckfield, Boothbay Harbor, and Mars Hill schools.

In 1947 she married Walter Bowie and they had three children, Robert, Barbara and Calvin. She moved to Malden, Mass. in 1954 where she was a teacher for homebound students with physical disabilities. Walter died unexpectedly December 25, 1954.

She married Dustin Adams (of Boothbay Harbor) in 1957 and the family moved to Wilmington, Delaware where she taught home economics in the Claymont school system from 1958 until her early retirement in 1978. She was nominated National Teacher of the Year for 1976 by the Claymont School District Board of Directors.

Mrs. Adams was again widowed in 1978. Because of her great love of teaching and travel, she joined the Peace Corps in 1980, serving the first two years in Tonga (a group of islands in the South Pacific). She then served in Bangkok, Thailand from approximately 1982 to 1992. She returned to Bangkok on her own as a volunteer until her return to the United States in 1994 because of declining health.

Survivors include a daughter, Barbara Chenoweth and her husband Bill of Albion; a son, Calvin Bowie, his wife Karen, and their daughters, Marilyn and Alison, of Manchester, N.H.; her brother, Arnold Brewer Jr. of Boothbay Harbor; her sister, Alice Lee of Boothbay Harbor and Zephyrhills, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

Roselin A. Ahonen
1998-02-26

NORWAY Roselin A. Ahonen, 82, of Bolsters Mills died Friday, February 20, 1998, at the Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway. She was born in Hodgdon, Maine, on February 11, 1916, the daughter of Ora and Margie Stockford Alward. She attended Hodgdon Schools. She was a housewife, worked at Wilners and Cornwalls, then she obtained her CNA in 1976 and worked at Stephens Memorial Hospital in the maternity ward. She lived in Bolsters Mills most all her life.

She married Ellis Ahonen on November 22, 1937 and he died on December 9, 1994. She is survived by one son Alan Ahonen of Newington, NH; two daughters, Joyce Mitchell of South Paris and Beverly Estes of Sabbatus; one sister, Hope Ritchie of Southington, CN; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and great-great-granddaughter and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Weston-Chandler Funeral Home , Norway. Interment will be in the Stuarts Corner cemetery in Bolsters Mills in the spring. Donations in Mrs. Ahonen's memory may be sent to the Oxford-Otisfield Rescue, P.O. Box 173, Oxford, ME 04270.

At a later date there will be a gathering at the family home.

Anne E. Akre
1999-02-11

SARASOTA, FL - Anne E. Akre, 88, of Sarasota, FL and Otisfield died on February 2 in Florida.

She was born on March 14, 1910 in Grand Rapids, MI and came to Sarasota seven years ago from Waterford, VA. She and her husband also own a summer home in Otisfield. She was a homemaker and operated an antiques business for a period of time.

She graduated from the University of Iowa and was a member of the First Congregational Church of Sarasota and Rock Spring Congregational Church of Arlington, VA. She was a member of Gamma Phi Beta and Mortar Board.

She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Charles T. Akre; a daughter, Holly A. Ertel of Macon, GA; a son, Charles T. Jr of Alexandria, VA; six grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

A memorial service will be held on March 8, at 11 a.m. at the Rock Spring Congregational Church in Arlington, VA. Toale Brothers Funeral Home of Sarasota is in charge of arrangements.

Christina C. Albee
1998-06-18

Christina C. Albee, age 86, of Alna Road, Alna, died suddenly Tuesday, June 16 at her residence.

Born in Milo on September 2, 1911, she was the daughter of Percie and Cecelia (Fabian) Reynolds.

Mrs. Albee graduated from Milo High School in 1929 and from Gorham Teachers College in 1931. She taught school in Milo and on June 6, 1936 married Maynard E. Albee. Mrs. Albee taught at the Alna Middle School for several years before raising a family of four.

She was a member of the Eastern Star, the Lincoln County Extension Service Group since 1938, the Miles Memorial Hospital League Rummage Sale, Volunteer of the Gray Ladies, the Sheepscot Methodist Church and the Sheepscot Community Church Circle, the Wiscasset Garden Club, and the Alna Women's Fire Auxiliary. She was active in the Republican Party and on several town committees, was a ballot clerk for many years and active in the Republican Party on County and State levels.

She enjoyed spending time with her family and grandchildren, gardening, and crafts and Shakespeare.

Survivors include her husband of 62 years, Maynard E. Albee of Alna; two sons, Tom Albee of Kennewick, WA, and Walter Albee of Ellington, Conn.; two daughters, Judy Albee of Jamaica Plain, Mass., and Carole Daigle of Portland; one half-brother, Albert Reynolds of Solvang, Calif.; one half-sister, Vila Usher of Downingtown, Penn.; 12 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her brother, Charles Reynolds, in 1997.

Visiting hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, June 19 at Mayo & Daigle Funeral Home, 40 Federal Street, Wiscasset. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, June 20 at the Sheepscot Methodist Church in Sheepscot with Rev. Dr. Bruce Young officiating. Burial will follow in Alna Center Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alna Volunteer Fire Department, c/o Alna Town Hall, Alna, ME 04535.

Albert E. Twitchell
1998-08-27

Albert E. Twitchell, known as `Trader Twitchell', 84, died Tuesday, August 25,1998, at his residence on Main Street in Oxford. A life-long resident of the area, he was born in Oxford, on August 12, 1914, the son of Leon and Ethel (Trebilcock) Twitchell, and had attended local Oxford schools.

`Trader Twitchell ` had owned and operated Twitchell's Farm Equipment in Oxford for many years until retirement and since then had been very active in the Area Agency on Aging and the R.S.V.P..

He was a member of the South Paris Baptist Church, and was known for a love for his family, his vegetable garden, and his flowers.

He was married in Alton, New York on October 12, 1938 to the former Louise E. Snow, who survives in Oxford., Other survivors include three daughter, Mrs. Harold (Margaret) Knightly of Oxford, Mrs William (Phyllis) Hobbs of Turner, and Mrs. Paul (Joanne) Volpy of West Seneca, New York; two sons, Roger P. Twitchell of Oxford, and Donald T. Twitchell of Newry; three sisters, Mrs Victor (Louise) Osborne of Darwin Park, FL., Mrs Arthur (Dorothy) Herrick of Oxford, and Miss Alberta Twitchell of Oxford; a brother, Thomas Twitchell of Norway, 11 grandchildren, and 10 great grandchildren; and was predeceased by a son, Lincoln Twitchell who died Aug. 12, 1961.

At his request, there are no public calling hours and private services will be held at the families convenience. Interment will be in Fore Street Cemetery, Oxford. Those who desire, please contribute to the Fore Street Cemetery, c/o Harold Knightly, 199 Skeetfield Rd., Oxford, ME 04270 in his memory. Arrangements are under the. care of the Meader and Son Funeral Home, Norway.

Rev. Erik H. Allen
1999-11-18

The Reverend Erik Halway Allen, age 81, died on Monday, November 15, 1999 after a long illness in Augusta.

The son of Ruth Eriksson Allen and Frank Leonard Allen, Rev. Allen was born June 14, 1918 in Weehawken, New Jersey, and was a life-long summer resident of Boothbay Harbor.

He was educated at The Rivers School (1933-36), Harvard University (B.S., 1940), Virginia Theological Seminary (1951, B.D.), and the University of Delaware (M.A., 1955).

Rev. Allen served in the Navy (1940-45) and Naval Reserve (1945-1948), rising from Ensign to the rank of Lieutenant Commander. He served in the Pacific Theater during World War II, principally aboard the U.S.S. Intrepid and the U.S.S. Los Angeles.

The Rev. Allen was Assistant Rector at Old Christ church, Philadelphia, Penn., held Rector positions at St. Paul's Church, Camden, Delaware, and Church of the Redeemer, Andalusia, Penn., and was Assistant at the Church of the Apostles, Fairfax, Va.

Survivors include his sister Eleanor Judith Allen of Boston; one daughter, Nancy Allen Thayer of Cumberland; three sons, Erik Halway Allen Jr. of St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, Bruce Hampton Allen of St. Louis, Mo., and Gregory Kent Allen of Andover, N.H.; and five grandchildren.

There will be no visitation. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Those who wish may contribute in his memory to the Gardiner Alzheimer's Center, 154 Dresden Ave., Gardiner, ME 04345.

Paul Francis Allen
1999-09-23

YARMOUTH - Paul Francis Allen, 70, of Norway died unexpectedly Friday, September 17, 1999 in Yarmouth.

He was born in Norway on April 10, 1929, the son of Dale and Eleanor Bartlett Allen.

Mr. Allen was a graduate of Norway High School in 1946, and attended Maine School of Commerce in Auburn.

On July 24, 1948 he married the former Jeanette May Sampson. They made their home in South Paris and in 1953 moved to Norway where they raised three children.

Mr. Allen joined the Army National Guard in 1948 and two years later was appointed to the full- time position of administrative supply technician at Norway which he held until September of 1962.

Since then he has been self-employed as a house painter. Mr. Allen had many hobbies over the years including bowling, fishing, baseball, hunting, music and theater. He performed in the School Community Productions, Music Man and L'il Abner, and served as president of the Maine Country Music Association.

He was well known for his unique sense of humor, and quick wit, and was beloved by young and old alike.

He is survived by his wife, Jeanette, of Norway; two daughters, Paula Nielsen and, her husband, Walt, of Farmington and Cherrie Bonney of Tennessee; a son, Paul Lindsey Allen, and his wife, Beth, of Norway; a brother, Dale Allen, of Florida; 15 grandchildren, Robin, Amy, Vaikko, Siiri, Hannah, Justin, Crystal, Naomi, Charity, Julia, Isaac, Joanna, P.J., Jodie, and Heather, and 14 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a brother, Linwood(Woody) Allen, and a grandson, Jeremy (Jamie) Bonney.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, September 21, at the Second Congregational Church of Norway with the Rev. Elaine Tobak officiating. Interment was in the Riverside Annex cemetery in South Paris. Visiting hours were held Monday evening at the Weston-Chandler Funeral Home in Norway.

Donations in Mr. Allen's memory may be sent to either the Second Congregational Church or the Oxford Hills Athletic Association.
