Maria P. Schnaitman

Maria Pfeffer Schnaitman died Tuesday, April 25 in Bath, of natural causes.

She was 90 years old and her long life spanned two continents and both World Wars.

Born in Berlin, Germany, her early memories included the familiar sight of Albert Einstein riding his bicycle on the streets.

She grew up to become an influential member of the art, theater, cultural and healing arts movements in Berlin of the 1930s and 40s. Among the contemporaries of her youth were Bertoit Brecht, Max Reinhardt, Graf Durckheim, Marlene Dietrich, and Leni Riefenstahl. After World War II, during which much of the life she knew was destroyed, she worked at the request of the British government to re-establish the theater in Germany.

In the 1950s she came to America with her husband, Albert Schnaitman, and when he retired, they settled in Boothbay. Following Albert's death in 1981, Maria donated their Hammond organ to Boothbay Region High School's music department. She became an active member of the Coastal Club, and established ties with the theater community at the Chocolate Church in Bath, the Monmouth Repertory in Monmouth, and particularly, here in Boothbay Harbor. She was a much loved patron of the Carousel Music Theater, where her wisdom and teaching techniques became a vital part of its training program for young performers.

Mrs. Schnaitman was also a member of the Jung Society in Brunswick, where she spoke several times on the subject of her life's work, and was integral to the project of translating correspondence for a biography of C.G. Jung.

Sometimes describing herself as a teacher and therapeutic artist, Maria often resisted any description of her work, preferring to simply be herself, to leave that task to those who knew and loved her. To the delight of everyone who came to learn from her, she continued to practice and teach her theories of physical awareness as performance technique well into her old age.

She was a citizen of Boothbay for more than 30 years, a familiar sight on Pension Ridge with her golden retriever, often walking with a friend.

Survivors include a stepdaughter, Margaret S. Wilcox of Unity; one stepson, Carl Schnaitman of Prescott, Arizona; four grandchildren, Karen J. Etchberger of Overland Park, Kansas, Terry Wilcox of Lewiston, Julie A. Szczech of Boothbay, and Peter Schnaitman of Columbus, Ohio; one god-daughter, Seabright G. McCabe of Willoughby, Ohio; and many friends. At her request, no services have been scheduled. Contributions in Mrs. Schnaitman's memory may be made to a charity of one's choice.
