Helen R. Pinkham

Helen R. Pinkham, 94, wife of the late Irving L. Pinkham, died Sunday, June 18 at a Norway nursing facility.

Born in Bangor on July 5, 1905, she was the daughter of Lorral L. and Annie (Hart) Reed.

Mrs. Pinkham graduated from Farmington Normal School in the 1920s and had taught elementary school in New York State. She and her husband were married in New York before moving back to Maine and living in the Bangor/Hampden area during the 1930s. She was an elementary school teacher at the Hampden Center School in Hampden and along with her husband, they operated a dairy farm on Route 9 in Hampden until 1956.

In 1956, they moved to Pittsfield, where they ran a poultry farm and provided tourist accommodations. In 1959, they moved to Boothbay Harbor, where they ran the Green Shutters Inn for 13 years, after which they sold the Inn to their son, Clayton.

In 1972, they moved to Belleview, Florida, where she developed lamp-making skills. In 1989 they moved back to Boothbay Harbor; a place which Helen and Irving truly loved. She made and sold lamps and was known as the "lamp lady."

Her entire life she was active in church, was a longtime member of the West Hampden Baptist Church and the Boothbay Baptist Church, where she enjoyed singing solos.

Survivors include her four children, Lewis and Clayton, both of Waxhaw, N.C., Marilyn Seaquist of Sudbury, Mass. and Sylvia Robinson of Kingston, Mass.; one sister, Marion Rowell of West Penobscot; 17 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchilld-ren; six great-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, June 24 at Lakeview Cemetery, Route 9 in Hampden, conducted by Alfred Roberts, deacon of the Boothbay Baptist Church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Boothbay Baptist Church, P.O. Box 64, Boothbay, ME 04537. Arrangements were by the Hampden-Gilpatrick Funeral Home in Hampden.

Stephen A. Arsenault

Stephen A. Arsenault, 43, died unexpectedly Monday, June 19 on Barter's Island.

Born May 25, 1957 in Worcester, Mass., he was the son of Francis and Ozelie Peters Arsenault. He grew up and attended local schools in the Boothbay region.

Mr. Arsenault was a fisherman all of his life and owned his own boat, the Regalia. He also dug clams, worms, tendered for sea urchins and fished with several local fishermen.

He was an avid racing fan and enjoyed hunting and fishing all of his life. He also enjoyed target shooting.

Mr. Arsenault was predeceased by his father Francis L. Arsenault, and brother Bruce Arsenault.

Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Ozelie and David Chapman of Boothbay; a daughter, Jessica Arsenault of Clearwater, Florida; a stepdaughter, Heather Perkins of Boothbay; a brother, Barry Arsenault of Alna; three sisters, Brenda Lord of Boothbay, Tammy Chubbuck and Lisa Orne, both of Boothbay; a half sister, Karen Brewer of Wiscasset; his dog Kaiser and several nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours were held on Wednesday, June 21 with a Bible Service at 7 p.m. Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, June 22 at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay. Private burial will be in the Oaklawn cemetery in Boothbay.

Minerva Townsend Spignesi

Minerva Townsend Spignesi, 90, of Bradenton, Florida and Boothbay died Tuesday, June 13 at College Park Club in Bradenton, Fla.

She was born September 9, 1909 in Westfield, Mass.

Mrs. Spignesi was a homemaker and moved to Bradenton from Naples, Florida two years ago.

Survivors include two daughters, Dolores J. Shannon of Sarasota, Fla., and Jeanne R. MacDonald of Attleboro, Mass.; one son, William F. Spignesi of Sedalia, Mo.; eight grandchildren and 11 great-grand-children.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Griffith-Cline Funeral Home, Manasota Chapel in Bradenton is in charge of arrangements.

Belma M. Oxton

Belma M. Oxton, 78, of Wiscasset, died Friday March 17 at Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta.

Born in Hanford, California, she was the daughter of John F. and Maria J. (Martins) Simoes.

She attended schools in Lemoore, California and in 1943 married Robert L. Oxton. In 1953 they moved to Maine and later to Wiscasset. She was employed by the Wiscasset School Department and later worked at Douglas Photo Shop in Bath. She was employed by Bath Iron Works in the Blueprint Department and later as a receptionist retiring in 1984.

Mrs. Dalton was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Bath, the Wiscasset Senior Citizens, the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary and the Wiscasset Garden Club. She was also a member of the Bath Hospital Auxiliary where she volunteered in the coffee shop.

She enjoyed reading, gardening, sewing, doing crossword puzzles and staying active as the Senior Citizens in Wiscasset.

Survivors include her husband, Robert L. Oxton of Wiscasset; two sons, Richard A. Oxton and his wife Ida L. of Oakland, and Robert S. Oxton and his wife Joan M. of Bath; two grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; four step-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at Greenlawn cemetery in Wiscasset in the spring. Memorial contributions may be made to the Wiscasset Ambulance, Wiscasset, ME 04578. Arrangements are by Mayo & Daigle Funeral Home in Wiscasset.

William Dalton

William "Wayne" Dalton, 61, a lifelong resident of Wiscasset, died Saturday, March 18 at Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick after a courageous 14-year battle with cancer.

Born in Wiscasset on August 12, 1938, he was the son of Joseph P. and Edith M. (Jones) Dalton.

Mr. Dalton attended Wiscasset schools and graduated from Wiscasset High School with the class of 1956. He served in the United States Army during the Cuban crisis. He was employed by Bath Iron Works as a welder. He later worked as a carpenter for many local contractors. He designed and built his own home and workshop.

Mr. Dalton enjoyed working with woods, politics and telling jokes. Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Connie M. Dalton of Wiscasset; two sons, William Wayne Dalton Jr. of Austin, Texas and Gregory Alan Dalton of Wiscasset; his mother, Edith M. Dalton of Damariscotta; three brothers, Rodger Dalton of Phippsburg, Richard Dalton of Wiscasset and Arthur Dalton of Newcastle; many cousins, nieces, nephews and many friends who all helped him through his final illness.

A graveside service was held on Wednesday, March 22 at Old Greenlawn cemetery in Wiscasset With Dr. Richard Hall officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Make A Wish Foundation, 87 Elm Street, Suite 203, Camden, ME 04843. Arrangements were by Mayo & Daigle Funeral Home in Wiscasset.

Mary M. Mack

Mary Mansur Mack, 87, died in Largo, Florida. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Marilyn Mansur of Bristol, formerly of Southport; and her granddaughter, Tracie Spillane of Oriental, N.C. In keeping with the wishes of Mrs. Mack, there will be no services. Burial will be at Spruce Lawn cemetery on Southport Island.

Eugene "Jeep" Howard

Eugene E. "Jeep" Howard, 71, died Monday, September 11 at Amenity Manor in Topsham after a long illness.

Born October 12, 1928 in Boothbay Harbor, he was the son of the late Emery and Altena Pierce Howard.

Mr. Howard was employed at local shipyards most of his life. He was also a part-time lobsterman and he also worked at the Boothbay Region Schools as a custodian.

Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Janet Varnum Howard of Wiscasset; one daughter, Mary Lewis of Boothbay and Deltona, Florida; one son, Jeffrey Howard of Wiscasset; one brother, Emery Howard Jr. of Apache Junction, Arizona; three sisters, Betty Hart of Pemaquid, Jeannette Papallo of Petersburg, Va., and Linda Foster of San Diego, Calif.; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

A graveside service was held on Wednesday, September 13 in Forest Hill cemetery in Dresden.

Arrangements were by Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay.

Major William M. Stewart II

Major William Watson Stewart II (USA Ret.) 86, died at Avon Health Center, Avon, Conn., on Sunday, September 10.

Born in Forfar, Glenogle, Scotland, on May 18, 1914, he was the son of the late James Robertson and Elizabeth (Campbell) Stewart. He grew up in West Hartford and had lived in Unionville following his marriage to the late Eveline (Moses) Stewart in 1944, moving to Village Gate Farmington in 1996. He maintained a summer home in East Boothbay for 29 years.

In 1932 he graduated from the William High School in West Hartford. During his working career he returned to school to complete his college education, graduating from the University of Hartford, Class of 1964, where he received an Associate of Science degree in Business Administration. He was a 20-year member of the Connecticut Army National Guard and served 42 months in the South Pacific theatre during World War II. Mr. Stewart resigned from the Connecticut National Guard as a Major in 1957. He was a member of Farmington Memorial Post 10361, Veterans of Foreign Wars in Farmington, Conn.

In 1979 Mr. Stewart retired from Northeast Utilities (NU) where he had been a District Business Office Supervisor in Torrington. His 43-year career with NU began when one of the original companies that composed NU, the Hartford Electric Light Company, hired him in 1936.

He had been a trustee of the Farmington Village Green and Library Association in Farmington. For over 50 years he was an active member of the First Church of Christ, Congregational in Unionville. For many years Mr. Stewart, an active Republican, served on the Farmington Town Plan and Zoning Commission, first as an alternate and subsequently as a full-time commissioner. Survivors include two sons, Scott Cameron Stewart of Rockland and Seth Hamilton Stewart of Boston, Mass. and Newcastle; sister-in-law, Mrs. James Campbell Stewart of Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.; cousins, William Watson Stewart, III of Kensington, Md., Mrs. Wells Brown of Ridgefield, Conn., and Miss Margaret R. Stewart of San Francisco, Calif., and several nieces and a nephew.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, September 16 at 2 p.m. at the First Church of Christ, Congregational, 61 Main Street in Unionville, with the Rev. Thomas F. Dean, Pastor, officiating. Private Interment will be in the Moss-Stewart family plot in Greenwood cemetery in Avon, Conn.

Memorial donations may be made in his name to the First Church Of Christ, Congregational, 61 Main Street, Unionville, CT 06085.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of J.S. Waterman & Sons Eastman-Waring, 497 Commonwealth Ave., Boston, Mass.

Ralph E. Farrar

Ralph E. Farrar, 49, of Bremen, died Wednesday, October 4 at the home of his son, Jamie, after a long illness.

Born October 29, 1950 in Boothbay Harbor, he was the son of Edward T. and Christine (Feltis) Farrar.

Mr. Farrar graduated from Lincoln Academy in the Class of 1969. For many years he was self-employed as a Marine Specimen Preservationist, working until illness forced his retirement.

After the birth of his daughter, Heather, he began playing drums professionally, working with several bands in the area. He also had a lifelong love for hunting, fishing and, most especially, chocolate.

Survivors include his mother, Christine Thurber of Newcastle; one son, James E. of Bremen; one daughter, Heather Higgins of Jefferson; two sisters, Rosalie Campbell of Damariscotta and Carla Dubord of Jefferson; and his granddaughter, Megan Farrar.

Visiting hours were held Friday, October 6 at the Strong Funeral Home in Damariscotta. A graveside service followed at the New Harbor Cemetery, with Rick Newell officiating. He was laid to rest with his father.

Margaret O. Hodgdon

Margaret O. Hodgdon, 89, died Thursday, October 5 at Cove's Edge in Damariscotta.

She was born on July 6, 1911, and graduated from high school in Massachusetts. She married John J. Oliver, and was a homemaker and a mother. She was predeceased by her husband John J. Oliver Sr. and later married George W. Hodgdon.

Mrs. Hodgdon enjoyed knitting, crocheting and sewing.

She was predeceased by her husband, George W. Hodgdon on June 9, 1979.

Mrs. Hodgdon is survived by her son, John J. Oliver Jr. of Damariscotta.

A graveside service was held on Wednesday, October 11 in Greenlawn cemetery in Wiscasset. Arrangements were by Mayo & Daigle Funeral Home of Wiscasset.

George W. Stickney Jr.

George W. Stickney Jr., 67, of Jefferson, died Monday, October 9 at Maine General Hospital in Augusta.

Born in Wiscasset on October 23, 1932, he was the son of George W. And Louise A. (Grover) Stickney Sr. He attended Wiscasset schools and graduated from Wiscasset Academy in the class of 1950. He served in the United States Army. On September 5, 1953 he married Gertrude M. Lincoln. Until 1963 he was employed at Chase Farm Equipment in Whitefield, and until 1975, he was employed by Bridge Construction in Windsor. He currently owned and operated Clary Lake Auto Parts in Jefferson.

Mr. Stickney was a member of the Riverside Lodge of Masons where he was a two-time Past Master, Past Worthy Grand Patron of the Order of the Eastern Star in Jefferson and a member of the South Jefferson United Baptist Church. Years ago he was active in performing at minstrel shows and playing tournament horseshoes.

He was predeceased by his wife Gertrude Stickney on July 16, 1993; one daughter, Darlene R. Anderson on August 25, 1999; and one sister Adeline Harvey.

Survivors include one son, George W. Stickney III and his wife Wanda L. of Whitefield; one daughter, Bertha "Bee Bee" Naylor and her husband Michael of South Bristol; two sisters, Blanche Johnson of Wiscasset and Diane Sutherburg of Newcastle; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchild-ren and many nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, October 12 at Mayo & Daigle Funeral Home in Wiscasset with a Masonic Service at 7 p.m. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, October 13 at the United Baptist Church of South Jefferson with Pastor JoAnne Hilton officiating. Burial will follow in Highland cemetery in Jefferson. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 52 Federal Street, Brunswick, ME 04011.

Lois A. Farnham

Lois A. Farnham, 85, of North Belfast Ave. in Augusta, died Monday, January 1, 2001 at her home after a long illness.

She was born in Boothbay on May 22, 1915, the daughter of Ralph E. and Ruth E. (Adams) Wylie. Mrs. Farnham was a graduate of Boothbay Harbor High School. She was the owner of Moeller's Hairdressing in Damariscotta for over 15 years, and had more recently worked for the State of Maine at the Augusta Mental Health Institute for 15 years.

Mrs. Farnham was predeceased by her husband of 20 years, Isaac A. Farnham, and a brother, Clarence E. Wylie.

She is survived by a son, William A. Farnham of Somerville; a daughter, Ardath E. Wood of Vassalboro; three sisters, Jenny Rittle of Nobleboro, Della Cormier of West Bath and Marjorie Goodrich of Edgecomb; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Relatives and friends may visit on Thursday, January 4, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant Street in Augusta. A committal service will be held on Friday at 1 p.m. in the Fr. Leonard Leclair Memorial Chapel at Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Civic Center Dr., Augusta.
