Ella Elizabeth DeMers

Ella Elizabeth DeMers, 89, of Woolwich, passed away peacefully in her home on Wednesday, May 17, following her husband Edward by seven years to the day.

Mrs. DeMers was born on April 24, 1917 in Bridgeport, Conn. She graduated at the top of her class from Central High School and went on to earn a B.A. from Central Connecticut State University and a master's degree from NYU and Yale. She had a distinguished career as an English teacher, spending 36 years with the Westport, Conn. schools, including many years as head of the English Department at Long Lots Junior High School, where in the late 1960s she pioneered the use of linguistics in the classroom. She spoke around the country about the application of linguistics in teaching grammar and wrote a linguistically oriented spelling book for McGraw Hill. She was a member of the Connecticut Retired Teachers Association, the National Education Association and the National Association of Teachers of English.

In 1947 she married Edward William DeChamplain DeMers in Bridgeport, Conn. The couple made their home in Bridgeport and then Trumbull, Conn. They were active members of the Golden Hill United Methodist Church where they had many friends. After retiring, the couple moved to Bath in 1983 where they joined the United Church of Christ Congregational.

Mrs. DeMers retired from teaching in 1973 to spend more time with her husband. They divided their time between a home above the Kennebec River in Bath and a summer home on Lake Sunapee in N.H. where their children and grandchildren visited on many happy occasions.

Mrs. DeMers was proud of her Hungarian heritage and spoke Hungarian fluently. She wrote the young adult novel, "A Prince from Transylvania," as a tribute to that heritage and to her happy childhood growing up in a Hungarian-American community. She was a long-standing member of the Hungarian-American Federation.

Survivors include a son, Tom DeMers and his wife Nora of Longmont, Colorado; a daughter, Susanna Liller and her husband Robin P. of Woolwich; three grandchildren, Stephen Card, Laurel Card and Elena DeMers; and several nieces and nephews; and by her beloved cat, Marmelade.

A memorial service was held on Sunday, May 21, at the United Church of Christ, Congregational in Bath.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the United Church of Christ, 150 Congress Avenue, Bath, ME 04530.

Arrangements were by Mayo, Curtis & Hill Funeral Home of Bath.

Muriel Sturgis Soule

Muriel Sturgis Soule died on Wednesday, May 17 at her home in Woolwich.

Mrs. Soule was born on February 23, 1917 in St. Petersburg, Florida, grew up at the Sturgis ancestral home at Broadacres in Vassalboro, graduated from Cony High School in Augusta, Edgewood Park in Greenwich, Connecticut, Ringling College in Sarasota, Florida and later attended the University of Maine in Augusta.

She was employed by the Maine Fish & Game department for several years. She was a Girl Scout leader and former member of the Kennebec Valley Garden Club. During World War II she served as a Gray Lady at the Veterans Hospital in Togus.

In 1942 she married David B. Soule. In 1954, they moved to Woolwich.

Mrs. Soule served on the Altar Guild of St. Philips Church in Wiscasset many years and was chairman of their Strawberry Festival. She served two terms on the Woolwich Planning Board and the Woolwich Conservation Commission. She was a member of the South Woolwich Volunteer Fire Society; past president of the Bath Garden Club and a founder of the Wiscasset Garden Club; former trustee of the Bath Memorial Hospital and a volunteer at the Bath Memorial Hospital Coffee Shop for 18 years. She served on the Board of Directors for the Garden Club Federation of Maine for 20 years and was past chairman of the Landscape Design Critics Council.

Mrs. Soule was appointed by Gov. John Reed to the Advisory Committee of the Keep Maine Scenic Committee. This committee was instrumental in eliminating roadside billboards and reducing litter in the State of Maine. Governor Kenneth Curtis appointed Mrs. Soule to the advisory committee of the Critical Areas committee on which she served for nine years.

She was chairperson of the Maine chapter of the New England Wild Flower Society for 10 years, served on the Board of Overseers and as an honorary Trustee. Her family donated to this society 40 acres on the Kennebec River in Vassalboro honoring their mother, Annie Sturgis. The sanctuary, known as the " Annie Sturgis Sanctuary " is open to the public. Gov. John McKernan presented the family with a "Critical Areas Award" for the preservation of colonies of a very rare wild ginger species within the sanctuary.

She was a member of the Josselyn Botanical Society, served on the Merrymeeting Audubon Society and was a founding member and director emeritus of the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens. She was a member of the Woolwich Historical Society, Mayflower Society and the Wiscasset Library Book Club.

Survivors include her husband of 64 years, David B. Soule; a son, David B. Soule, Jr. and his wife, Patricia J. O'Reilly; two grandchildren, Tyson N. Soule and Erika Soule and her husband, Steven Shea.

Mrs. Soule had five brothers and sisters: Rebecca Sturgis Hilton, Elizabeth Sturgis Kinsman, Margaret Sturgis, Hester Williamson, and Horace R. Sturgis, Jr., all of whom have predeceased her.

There will be no visiting hours. A memorial service will be held at St. Philips Church in Wiscasset on Friday, May 26, at 2 p.m. A private committal will be at the Murphy's Corner cemetery in Woolwich, Maine at a future date.

Memorial contributions may be sent to the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, Inc., P.O. Box 234, Boothbay, ME 04537; or New England Wild Flower Society, 180 Hemenway Road, Framingham, MA 01701.

Arrangements are by Mayo & Daigle Funeral Home, 40 Federal Street in Wiscasset.

Mellie A. Giles

Mellie A. Giles, 85, of Edgecomb, died Friday, May 19 at Amenity Manor in Topsham.

Born March 30, 1921 in Farmingdale, she was a daughter of George L. Boudway and Mellie Peach Boudway. She grew up in Boothbay and attended local schools graduating from Boothbay Harbor High School. She was a homemaker for many years.

After her husband, Drummond Giles, died in 1976 she began working at Fort Edgecomb as a State Park Receptionist Ranger. She also worked at Whitfield's Pharmacy in Wiscasset.

Mrs. Giles was the ballot clerk for Edgecomb for many years. She was a member of the Edgecomb Historical Society and served as its treasurer. She was also a member of the Edgecomb Congregational Church and served as a Deaconess for many years and was also a member of the Ladies Aid.

She loved gardening, sewing, reading and wrote the Edgecomb column in the Lincoln County News and Boothbay Register.

Mrs. Giles was active in the Republican Party and helping put on bean hole bean suppers to help support local school functions.

She was predeceased by her husband, Drummond Giles who died in 1976.

Survivors include three sons, Malcolm Giles and his wife Dorothy and Robert A. Giles, all of Edgecomb, and Kenneth R. Giles of Woolwich; seven grandchildren; 10-1/2 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral was held Tuesday, May 22 at the Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home. A reception followed the service at the funeral home. Burial was in the Highland cemetery in Edgecomb.

Contributions in Mrs. Giles' memory may be made to the Fort Edgecomb Preservation Committee, Edgecomb Town Office, Edgecomb, ME 04556.

Arrangements were entrusted to Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay.

Tanya M. Swain

Tanya M. Swain, 31, of Bangor, died Friday, May 19 at her home.

Born in Damariscotta on September 12, 1974, she was a daughter of Howard Jr. and Elizabeth (Alden) Swain.

Miss Swain attended schools in Rockland and was employed by Marketing Unlimited in Brewer. She enjoyed spending time with her family, friends and nieces.

She was predeceased by her grandfather, Howard P. Swain, Sr.

Survivors include her companion, Norman Bolden of Bangor; one daughter, Heaven Elizabeth Bolden of Bangor; stepmother, Brenda Swain of Woolwich; stepfather, Wayne Alden of Cushing; two brothers, Joseph Swain of Dresden, and William Adkins of Bath; one sister, Jessica Merrill of West Bath; one stepsister, Amanda Coulter of Woolwich; grandmother, Hazel Swain of Wiscasset; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be held from noon to 2 p.m. on Thursday, May 25, at Mayo, Curtis & Hill Funeral Home, 819 High Street, Bath. A funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Oak Grove cemetery in Bath.

Memorial Contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.

A. Jean Smith

A. Jean Smith, 89, of Westport Island, died peacefully on Monday, May 22, at Bay Square Assisted Living in Yarmouth.

Born in Limestone in 1917 to Eva (Ward) and Glenn R. Cheney, she grew up primarily in Wash-burn, Maine.

Following high school graduation, she became a registered nurse working at Boston Children's Hospital.

While in Boston, she met John L. Smith, Jr. whom she married in November 1940. Together they raised four children in Westwood, Mass. before retiring in 1971 to their home on Westport Island where they had summered since 1947.

An avid gardener and tireless volunteer, she had worked with developmentally challenged children, Head Start, Red Cross Blood Drives - and within her church, The First Congregational Church UCC Wiscasset - as chairman of the Church World Service and the Organ Society. She was a member of the Wiscasset Garden Club

She passed along her work ethics, sense of humor and a passion for life to her children and grandchildren.

Mrs. Smith was predeceased by her husband, John, in 1984; son, John Lloyd "Spike" Smith, III, in 1992; and two sisters, Mary Eurenius and Winnifred Gellerson.

Survivors include three daughters, Sarah S. Nason and her husband Waldon Nason of Everett, Mass., Constance M. Ostis and her husband Harry Ostis of Yarmouth and their three children, Jay, Nathan, and Lauren, and Jennifer E. Bakes and her husband Christos Bakes of Norwalk, Conn. and their three daughters, Nicole, Kathryn, and Annette; her son's wife, Karen Smith and their children, Michael Smith and his wife Benoite, and Kristin Doles and her husband David and their two children, Caleb and Elise; nieces, Ruth Eurenius, Judy Gellerson, Mariette Ivey; and nephews, Stephen Eurenius, John Coble, and Glenn Coble.

A memorial service will be held at The First Congregational Church UCC Wiscasset at 10 a.m., Thursday May 25.

While flowers are welcome, Mrs. Smith's memory would be equally honored by donations to Habitat for Humanity, the Heifer Project, or The First Congregational Church UCC Wiscasset.

Arrangements are entrusted to Mayo and Daigle Funeral Home of Wiscasset.

Roxanne K. Ashton

Roxanne K. Ashton, 49, died at Goodall Hospital in Sanford Friday, August 25.

Born in Bath on May 30, 1951, she was the daughter of Arthur S. Ashton Sr. and Kathleen Ashton Overlock, both deceased of Bath.

Ms. Ashton was educated in the Bath schools. She lived in New Hampshire for several years and in Florida, after leaving Bath. Since her illness she resided with her sister Janet Hay of Lebannon.

She was a loving mother and grandmother, sister, and a friend to all. She enjoyed sewing and collecting dolls.

Surviving include one daughter, Rhonda Owens of Bath; one son, James deVries of New Hampshire; their father, Brand deVries of Florida; a sister, Janet Jay of Lebannon; five brothers, Edward Ashton of New Hampshire, Arthur S. Ashton Jr., Cleveland Ashton, and Charles Ashton, all of Wiscasset, and Marc Ashton of Boothbay Harbor; three step-sisters, Gloria Gustafson, Carol Guertin, and Diane Overlock; four step-brothers, Lawrence Overlock, Maynard Overlock, Earl Overlock, and Carl Overlock; and seven grandchildren.

There will be a graveside service at the Oak Grove cemetery with Pastor Russel Peppe of the Beacon Street Methodist Church officiating on September 9 at 2 p.m.

Burial services are arranged by Direct Cremation of Maine. Any contributions may be made to the MDA for ALS.

Louise H. Asperen
1999-07-29

HARRISON - Louise H. Asperen, 87, died Wednesday evening, July 21, 1999, at her Depot Street home. Her death was unexpected.

She was born in Finland and came to this country as a young girl. She attended schools in Waterford.

Mrs. Asperen spent most of her adult life in New York City where she worked as a cook in private homes and at the Frick Museum. She returned to Maine following her retirement in 1971.

Her husband, Sture Asperen died in 1994. She was the daughter of Charles and Liisa Komulainen Heino.

Surviving are a daughter, Evelyn M. Manzi of the Bronx, NY; two brothers, Albert Heino of Waterford and Robert Heino of Harrison; four sisters, Celia Jacobson and Linda Heath, both of Harrison, Hilda Petersen and Martha Kyllonen, both of Bridgton; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at a later date at the Finnish cemetery on Route 117 in Harrison.

Arrangements are by the Raymond-Wentworth Funeral Home in Bridgton.

Edith C. Attridge
1999-03-25

Edith Clarke Attridge, 77, of Indianapolis, Indiana, formerly of Glen Cove, New York, and Boothbay Harbor died Tuesday, March 16 at Marquette Manor Health Care in Indianapolis.

Mrs. Attridge graduated from Pine Manor Junior College and attended Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School. She was a member of the St. Vincent Hospital Guild in Indianapolis, Ind., Glen Cove Women's Club in Glen Cove, N.Y.; North Shore Community Hospital Volunteer Guild, Sea Cliff Yacht Club, and St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Glen Cove, N.Y.

She was predeceased by her husband, Thomas Wilkinson Attridge Jr., whose parents owned a home in East Boothbay for several years.

Survivors include three daughters, Margaret C.A. Young, Anne C. Attridge, and Katharine A. Anas, all of Indianapolis, Ind.; one brother, Albert A. Clarke Jr. of Boca Raton, Florida; and five grandchildren.

A funeral service will be private. Burial will be in Maple Grove cemetery in Kew Gardens, New York.

Memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society or St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Glen Cove, New York.

A committal service for Alma M. Atwood, 79, of Bath who died on January 15, 1998 will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 9 at Riverside cemetery in Woolwich. Arrangements are by Mayo, Curtis & Hill Funeral Home, 819 High Street, Bath.
