George F. Auld Sr.
1999-07-15

George F. Auld Sr. of Wellesley, Massachusetts, died April 24 at the Wellesley Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was 90.

Born in Boothbay Harbor, he was the son of Frank B. and Georgeanna (Gove) Auld. He attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Mr. Auld was a resident of Wellesley for 57 years. Before retiring, he had been an electrical engineer for Honeywell Company in Burlington. He was a volunteer worker at Newton-Wellesley Hospital, and was a member of the Wellesley Bridge Club.

Survivors include his wife, Charlotte (Shepherd) Auld; three sons, George F. Auld Jr. of Austin, Texas, David B. Auld of Northboro, and John B. Auld of Revere, Mass.; four grandchildren, Timothy of Amesbury, William of Palm Beach, Fla., Dana of Santa Cruz, Calif., and Mark of Kennebunkport; a great-grandson, Mark Auld Jr.; and four cousins, Arnie Brewer, Alice B. Lee, Ruth Adams all of Boothbay Harbor, and Robert Auld of Florida.

Graveside services were held at Ocean View Cemetery, Boothbay.

Ellen A. Austin
1999-03-04

FRYEBURG - Ellen A. Austin, 85, died Saturday. February 27, at Fryeburg Health Care Center, following a long illness.

She was born in Norway, a daughter of Clarence and Olive Hussey Whitman, and attended Norway schools.

Mrs. Austin worked in both the shoe and snowshoe industry.

She married Chester Austin in 1929, and they made their home in North Norway. Her husband died in 1974.

Surviving are four daughters, Mildred Davis of Harrison, Natalie Damon of North Yarmouth, Jeannine Paterson of Bar Harbor and Sandra Breslin of Pittsfield; six grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. on April 25, at Pike's Hill Cemetery. The Reverend David McMahon will officiate.

Arrangements were by Raymond Wentworth Funeral Home in Bridgton.

James G. Brann
2000-11-16

James Glidden Brann, 84, Jefferson, died Wed., Nov. 15, at Country Manor Nursing Home, Coopers Mills Village, Whitefield.

He was born June 24, 1916, in Jefferson, the son Lawrence Alden and Gertrude (Noyes) Brann, and attended Murphy School, in Jefferson.

As a young man, he was employed as an electrician at Bath Iron Works during World War II, and at Kittery Naval Shipyard. He sold real estate in his younger years. Mr. Brann worked for many years as a carpenter, builder and home contractor.

He was an avid citizens band radio operator whose handle was “Dragon.” He love to play the Maine State Lottery despite his period of ill health.

Mr. Brann had been the companion of Saima F. Harvella for nearly 20 years. He and Saima made their home in Jefferson for the past few years, and had previously lived in Windsor.

In addition to his loving companion, Saima F. Harvella, of Jefferson, survivors include sons, Roland O. Brann, and companion, Sue Sproul, of Jefferson, and Ronald J. Brann, and his wife, Carol, of Waldoboro; his daughter, Juanita J. McLean, of Waldoboro; his sister, Ethel Noyes, of Jefferson; brothers, Oliver Brann, and his wife, Terrie, of Whitefield, and Charles Brann, of Augusta; five grandchildren, Shawn Brann, Natasha Brann, James Brann Jr., Robert Lermond, and Stephen McLean; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

By request, visiting hours are private.

Graveside service 11 a.m. Nov. 18, at Shepard Cemetery, Route 32, Jefferson, with Pastor Albert York, of Weeks Mills Advent Christian Church officiating. Committal and burial will follow.

Arrangements are by Gray & Pratt Funeral Directors, Windsor.

Donald J. Ayotte
1999-07-01

NORWAY - Donald J. Ayotte, 66, of Oxford died Friday, June 25, 1999, at Stephens Memorial Hospital.

He was born in Hamlin Plantation, ME on November 7, 1932, the son of Warner and Arlene Gorey Ayotte.

He attended school in Van Buren.

Mr. Ayotte faithfully served our country in the US Army during the Korean War.

He married Pauline I. Page on July 2, 1955.

After serving in the military, Mr. Ayotte was a machinist until 1975. He then went into business for himself and opened Ayotte's Used Car Parts in Oxford. He also provided the wrecker service at Oxford Plains Speedway for over 15 years. Mr. Ayotte was very active in the Santa Visits Oxford program every year which gives out Christmas presents to kids.

He is survived by his wife, Pauline, of Oxford; four sons Vincent, Kevin and Wayne all of Oxford, and Dean of Norway; one daughter, Angela, of Oxford; his mother, Arlene, of Connecticut; 10 grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

There were visiting hours on Sunday, June 27, at the Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, Norway.

Funeral services were held Monday in the funeral home with Father Lawrence Conley as celebrant.

Adam L. Bailey
1998-12-31

BRIDGTON - Adam L. Bailey, age 12, died Tuesday, December 22, at a Bridgton Hospital.

He was born in Bridgton on June 1, 1986, the son of Lisa Cross and Joseph Bailey.

Adam was in the eighth grade at the Lake Region Middle School. Adam enjoyed computers, math and loved all sports. He was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan.

He is survived by his mother and step father, Lisa and Milo Blodgett of Bridgton; his father, Joseph Bailey, of Poland, and one brother, Brian Bailey of Bridgton. He is also survived by his maternal grandparents, Gilbert Sr. and Carolyn Cross of Bridgton and a step grandmother, Dorothy Blodgett of Underhill, VT. Adam was predeceased by a sister, Kami-Sue Cross.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. on December 24, at the Raymond-Wentworth Funeral Home.

Robert H. Baird Jr.
1999-05-06

Robert Hall Baird Jr., 47, of Alna, died Saturday, May 1 at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

Born in Alna on July 15, 1951, he was the son of Robert H. Sr. and Louise M. (Smith) Baird.

He enjoyed summer rides up north with his family.

Survivors include his father and mother, Robert H. Baird Sr. and Louise M. Baird of Alna; one brother, John R. H. Baird of Alna; two sisters, Janice I. Baird and Carol A. Small, both of Alna; two nieces, Kimberly Small and Melissa Small; several aunts, uncles and cousins.

A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. on Thursday, May 6 at the Alna Newcastle Baptist Church with Rev. Sewall Pearson officiating. Burial will follow in the Alna Cemetery.

Alice M. Baker
2000-01-06

Alice M. Baker, 88, of Woolwich, died at Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta, on Friday, December 31. She had been a resident of Maplehaven in Wiscasset since March of 1999. born in Arrowsic on August 20, 1911, she was the daughter of Bion and Rosa Brookings Shea. She attended Arrowsic schools and Morse High School in Bath. On June 22, 1929, she married Forrest A. Baker of Woolwich. They were married for over 68 years until his death on March 23, 1998.

Mrs. Baker was a homemaker. She was famous for her Rotary Club dinners every Tuesday noon at the old Central Church. She also catered wedding receptions, made and decorated cakes. In 1976, Mrs. Baker's talents were publicly acclaimed when she was chosen Outstanding Homemaker of the Year by the Twin-County Extension Service for her excellence in cooking, sewing, knitting, crocheting, flower gardening and other homemaking skills.

In 1952, the Bakers built a cottage on Damariscotta Lake in Nobleboro where they spent all their summers. Mrs. Baker enjoyed the lake, spending much time with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and many friends. Surviving are three sons, Bruce S. Baker of Newcastle, Phillip E. Baker and Dennis E. Baker, both of Woolwich; 15 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband Forrest A. Baker; a son Darrell A. Baker of Nashville, Tennessee; and a daughter Patricia Baker Leavitt of Atkinson, New Hampshire; one brother, Maurice Shea of Bath; and two sisters, Muriel Preble and Grace Preble, both of Woolwich.

A memorial service will be held at the Days Ferry Congregational Church in Woolwich on Saturday, January 8, 2000 at 1 p.m. A graveside service will be held at the Riverside cemetery in Days Ferry in the summer.

Nancy T. Baldwin

Nancy T. Baldwin died peacefully on Sunday, February 27, after a long struggle with cancer.

Born in Worcester, Massachusetts, on August 21, 1924, Nancy Spring Taft grew up in Uxbridge, Mass., the youngest of three daughters of George S. Taft and Nancy Hall Taft. She moved to Concord, Mass. with her mother, shortly after her father's death. She attended St. Mary's School in the Mountains in New Hampshire, graduating in 1942.

She married Stephen P. Baldwin, a lifelong resident of Concord, on February 26, 1943. She lived in Concord, thereafter, where she was an active member of Trinity Episcopal Church. In 1989 she completed the Education for Ministry Program, and served as a mentor for several years. She was a dedicated member of weekly Bible Study, as well as a caregiver to church members of all ages. More recently she was involved in prison outreach, visiting, counseling, and advocating for inmates, some of whom she corresponded with until her death.

Mrs. Baldwin was an exceptionally creative artist who used her talent in watercolor painting, in drawing and design to exhibit in art shows and to contribute her work to church and various community groups, both in Concord and at Cuttyhunk, her beloved summer home. She was a member of the Concord Art Association and the Concord Players, where she performed for many years and attended plays until the last week of her life. She was also a volunteer at Emerson Hospital, a member of the Concord Country Cub, the Ladies Tuesday Club, her monthly Book Club, a longtime subscriber to the Boston Symphony Orchestra and a patron of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.

Mrs. Baldwin and her family spent many winters in Waitsfield, Vermont. She also spent over 50 summers on Cuttyhunk Island, where she was a charter member of the Cuttyhunk Yacht Club, an active member of the Cuttyhunk Historical Society, the Union Methodist Church, and a devoted member of the island community.

She was predeceased by her husband of 50 years, Stephen P. Baldwin; her sister, Margaret T. Russell; her brothers-in-law, Joseph Russell and Joan D. Shaw; as well as her eldest daughter, Diana B. Gabaree.

Survivors include her sister, Nora T. Shaw of West Yarmouth; three daughters and sons-in-law, Hilary and Miller Brown of Glastonbury, Conn., Pamela and Skip Rideout of Southport; and Stephanie and John Drieze of Wenham, Mass.; seven grandchildren; one great-grandson; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial services were held in Trinity Church, Concord, on Friday, March 3, conducted by the Reverends David M. Barney, Janet Lovejoy and Patricia Eustis. Interment will be at a later date. For those who wish, gifts in her memory may be sent to the Penikese Island School, P.O. Box 161, Woods Hole, MA 02543. Arrangements were under the direction of the MacRae-Tunnicliffe Funeral Home in Concord.

Elizabeth Bannister
1998-10-01

Elizabeth Houston Bannister, 79, died Saturday,September 26 at Notre Dame Convalescent Home in Norwalk, Conn. where she had been recuperating following a brief illness. She spent 43 summers on Squirrel Island.

Born in Elizabeth, N.J., Mrs. Bannister was an alumna of the Scudder School in New York City and worked at the Henry Street Settlement. Scudder pioneered social welfare reform.

Her first marriage to Thomas W. Bishop in 1938 ended in divorce. She later married Walter Herman Scholl and moved to Alexandria, Va. An accomplished duplicate bridge player, Mrs. Bannister was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was related to Sam Houston, the first president of Texas.

Mr. Scholl died in 1964 and in 1965, Mrs. Bannister married Lemuel Bannister Jr. whose parents, Mary Faxon and Lemuel Bannister Sr. were summer residents of Squirrel island. Mr. Bannister was an attorney with the New York City law firm, Bannister, Stitt, Holloway and Krause. They lived in Greenwich, Conn. until Mr. Bannister's death in 1984, after which Mrs. Bannister moved to Norwell, Mass. and subsequently, to Stamford, Conn. in 1994. She continued to spend summers on Squirrel Island until this year.

Survivors include her brother, William J. Houston of Pompano Beach, Fla.; a son from her first marriage, Thomas Bishop Jr. of Burlington, Vt.; three sons from her second marriage, Anthony Scholl of Wilton, Conn., Peter Scholl of Cohassett, Mass and Nicholas Scholl of The Plains, Va.; two daughters, Jaye Scholl Bohlen of Glendale, Calif., and Alexandra Scholl Young of Norwell, Mass.

A memorial service will be held at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Darien, Conn. at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 3. Flowers may be sent to the church or contributions may be made in her memory to the Notre Dame Convalescent Home, 76 West Rocks Road, Norwalk, CT 06851.

Doris Linscott Barbour

Doris Linscott Barbour, 85, Bloomfield, Conn., died May 1 at Seabury Retirement Community, Bloomfield, Conn.

Born in Boston, she was the daughter of Linwood and Lillian Linscott of Waban, Mass. She graduated from Wheaton College in 1936.

She was the wife of the late Dr. Charles M. Barbour.

Mrs. Barbour's childhood summer vacations were spent at the home of her grandparents, Charles and Rosa Linscott, on Bunker Hill Rd. in Jefferson.

She is survived by a son, Charles M. Barbour of Arlington, Va.; a daughter, Betsy Barbour Duvall of Denver, Col.; a brother, Forrest H. Linscott of Stoneham, Mass.; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Sat., May 15, at 3 p.m. at the First Church of Christ Congregational, West Hartford, Conn.
