Royce N. Banton

Royce N. Banton, 81, husband of the late Geraldine (Miller) Banton, formerly of Bangor, died January 4, at the Maine Veterans Home in Augusta.

He was born in Montville on November 28, 1919, son of Walter L. and Ida (Quigg) Banton.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was employed in the food business for 41 years, retiring from the former Milliken-Tomlinson Company in 1982.

Surviving are one son, Russell N. Banton and his wife, Mary Ellen of Brunswick; two grandsons, Brian N. and Benjamin A.; one granddaughter, Robyn E.; a brother, Walter C. Banton, of Palermo; two nieces, and a nephew.

A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, January 9 at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church at 330 Maine Street in Brunswick, with the Rev. Rebecca Wagner, pastor, officiating. Private Interment will be in Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Augusta.

Memorial contributions in Royce's memory may be made to the Disabled American Veterans, Box 3151, Togus, 04330. Arrangements were by Brookings-Smith, 133 Center Street, Bangor.

Guy A. Booker
1999-12-23

Guy A. Booker, 89, of Pensacola, Fla., died Dec. 1. He was born in Gardiner, Maine and spent his summers in Chamberlain. He was educated in the Gardiner schools and attended the University of Maine receiving his degree in mechanical engineering.

Mr. Booker was a member of the American Society of Safety Engineers since 1946 and was awarded the status of professional member emeritus in 1976.

He held office in a number of national, regional, state and local organizations, including chairman of the Textile Section of the National Safety Council, president of Southern Safety Conference and president of the NW Florida Society of Safety Engineers. He was on the Board of Directors of the NW Association in Pensacola and president of the Industrial Management Assn. there.

Mr. Booker served in the US Navy as a Lieutenant, joining Chemstrand Corp. in 1953 as a safety supervisor and retiring in 1974 from Monsanto. He was a member of Our Savior Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife, Frances (Peggy) Dodge Booker; two daughters and sons-in-law, Ellen and William Addison and Sally Eileen and James Currie, all of Pensacola; one son and daughter-in-law, Richard Donald and Diane Booker of Rumson, N.J.; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Sat., Dec. 6 at Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel with Fr. Martin D. Holley officiating. Burial will be in the Bayview Memorial Park. Friends may call at Harper Memorial Chapel from 1 p.m. to service time on Dec. 6.

In lieu of flowers, memorial may be made to the Alzheimer Family Services, 2627-C Creighton Rd., Pensacola, Fla. 32504 or the Our Savior Catholic Church, Pensacola. Harper-Morris Memorial chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Laura G. Barbeau
2000-02-03

Laura Grace Barbeau, 81, of Buzzards Bay, Mass., died Monday, January 31 at home.

She was born in Boothbay Harbor on November 20, 1918, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Newcomb, and graduated from Boothbay Harbor High School. She and her husband, Armand L. Barbeau, who predeceased her in 1989, were the former owners of the Ebb Tide Restaurant in Boothbay Harbor. Prior to that, Mrs. Barbeau was employed as a cafeteria cook with the Bourne, Mass. schools. She enjoyed reading, crocheting, painting and cooking.

Mrs. Barbeau is survived by a daughter, Laurie Paillex of Buzzards Bay, Mass.; two sons, Joseph L. Barbeau of South Portland and Edward Burbridge of Denver, Colo.; a sister, Ruth Begin of Boothbay Harbor and Tarpon Springs, Fla.; a brother, Malcom Newcomb of Boothbay Harbor; two grandsons and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held in Boothbay Harbor at a later date.

Memorial contributions in her name may be made to the Hospice Association of Cape Cod, Inc., 923 Rt. 6-A, Yarmouthport, Mass. 02675.

Hildegarde “Hilde” R. Barlow

Hildegarde “Hilde” R. Barlow, 90, East Boothbay died Feb. 23, at St. Andrews Village in Boothbay Harbor.

She was born Nov. 17, 1910 in Belfast the daughter of Levi L. and Josephine Knight Rogers. She grew up in Belfast, attended local schools there and graduated from Crosby High School in the class of 1928. she furthered her education earning a degree in Home Economics from Farmington State Teachers College and in 1966 earned her Masters Degree in Education from the University of Maine at Orono.

Mrs. Barlow’s Home Economics teaching experience included Williams High School in Oakland, Stephens High School in Rumford, and Falmouth High School in Falmouth. She taught at the Boothbay Region High School in Boothbay Harbor from 1957 to 1972.

Hilde believed she was most fortunate in having opportunities to serve her community beyond teaching. These volunteer opportunities included serving as a Maine Department of Heath and Welfare Social Worker in Rumford for public Assistance programs such as Old Age Assistance, Aid to the Blind, and Aid to Dependent Children. In the 1950’s she was executive secretary and home service chairman of the Lincoln County Chapter of the American Red Cross in Damariscotta.

She was one of the original organizers, served as Chairman of the Board and a longtime member of Meals On Wheels program in the Boothbay area. In the 1960’s and 1970’s she was secretary of the Food Pantry. She served as the Chairman of the Senior Advisory Council from 1992 to 1995 and as Second Vice President on the Board of Directors from 1995 to 1996 for Senior Spectrum (Central Maine Area Agency on Aging.) She was an active member of the East Boothbay United Methodist Church. She was predeceased by her husband, Albert Barlow who died in 1978.

She is survived by a daughter: Heather D. Barlow of Brunswick, two sons, William R. Barlow and wife Jane of East Boothbay, Peter D. Barlow and wife Ellen of West Virginia. 8 Grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

Celebration of life service 10:30 a.m. Feb. 26 at the East Boothbay United Methodist Church. Rev. Mary Jo Zimmerli will officiate.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Boothbay Region Humane Society, P.O. Box 303, Boothbay Harbor 04538. Arrangements are by Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, 975 Wiscasset Road, Boothbay.

Tomasa Guzman Bariny
1999-02-11

SOUTH PARIS - Tomasa Guzman Bariny, 89, a resident of Ponce, Puerto Rico, died Sunday,February 7,1999, while a resident of the Maine Veterans, Home.

She was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico, on August 10,1909 and resided there until illness made it necessary for her to take up residency with her daughter and son-in-law in Oxford.

Mrs. Bariny was an avid gardener,enjoying her many species of flowers and local plants. Until recent years and illness forced her to retire ,she operated a catering business for local merchants.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Rosa and Roger Jackson of Oxford, three grandchildren ,Veronica, and her husband, Timothy McLellan, of Cummings,GA, Alan of Champlain,NY and Kathleen and Scott Ward of Oxford and four great grandchildren.She was predeceased by her husband Gabriel Bariny who died in 1970.

Funeral services and Interment will be in Puerto Rico.Local arrangements are under the direction of Weston-Chandler Funeral Home,South Paris.

Harrison E. Barlow
2000-11-23

STOW -Harrison E. Barlow, 88, died Monday, November 13, 2000 at his residence.

Mr. Barlow was born in Lovell, MA on November 24, 1911, son of the late Charles and Gertrude (Tallant) Barlow. He graduated from high school in Massachusetts.

Mr. Barlow lived in Stow, with his son for the last month, coming from Ft. Lauderdale, FL.

He married Julia Swanson, who predeceased him, and then married Ruth Betty Cook, who also predeceased him.

Mr. Barlow was a member of the Knights of Pythias in Auburn.

Surviving are a daughter, Constance Ludlan and her husband Stuart of Whatly, MA; a son, Mark and his wife Judy of Stow; a stepdaughter, Donna Simpson of Lewiston; a stepson, Deane Hamilton of California; two sisters, Marion Spera of Ft. Lauderdale, and Shirley Houghton of Turner; a brother, Arthur Barlow of Lowell, MA; five grandchildren one great grandchild; and two step grandchildren.

Memorial Services will be held at the Sixth St. Congregational Church, New Auburn, Friday November 24 at 1 p.m. Burial will be in the Gracelawn Memorial Park. Arrangements are under the Raymond-Wentworth Funeral Home, Bridgton.

Bernard A. Barker
1999-07-29

Bernard A. Barker, 76, of Monticello, Iowa died from lung cancer on Sunday morning, July 25 at his home with his family at his side.

He was born March 30, 1923 in Marshalltown, Iowa, the son of Ollie R. and Alda Bennett Barker. He attended Marshalltown schools before enlisting in the United States Navy during World War II. He served as a radio operator and survived the sinking of two of the ships he served on. Following his military duties, he taught electronics and radio control systems at the University of Chicago. He also worked on the V2 Rocket systems.

Mr. Barker married Myrna Pelham on July 28, 1942 in Marshalltown, Iowa. He was a sales representative for International Harvester and Fisher Controls. In April 1965, they moved to Monticello, Iowa where he became president of Franklin Equipment, now Franklin Industries. Mr. Barker held several patents for Livestock Watering Equipment.

He was active in the Jones County Republicans and served on several Presidential Republican task forces. He also belonged to the Burns Masonic Lodge, El Kahir Shrine, the American Legion, VFW, Elks Club, Monticello Golf Club and was a private pilot for many years.

Mr. Barker is survived by five children, Bernie Barker, Ruhl Barker and Ginger Eilers, all of Iowa, Rick Barker of Michigan and Darla Parker of East Boothbay; a brother, Raymond Barker, and two sisters, Lillian Mitchell and Mildred Reese, all of Iowa; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his wife, Myrna, who died October 9, 1995, and two sister, Betty and Helen.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 27 at the Goettsch Funeral Home, Monticello, Iowa, with Interment in the Oakwood Cemetery.

Marjorie E. (Twitchell) Barker
1998-04-02

Marjorie E. (Twitchell) Barker, 88, of Mayville Road, Bethel, widow of Leroy E. Barker, died Tuesday morning, March 24, 1998, at her home, after a long illness. Mrs. Barker was born in Oxford, Sept. 25, 1909, the daughter of the late Wellington and Mamie E. (Llewellyn) Twitchell, and attended Oxford schools, graduating from Norway High School with the class of 1927. She was a waitress for Norway area restaurants, and for many years managed the fountain at J. J. Newberry's in Norway, and

also owed and operated a coffee shop on Fore Street in Oxford at one time.

On November 1, 1951 she married Leroy L. Barker, and they established their home in Bethel, in 1955. Mr. Barker died June 30, 1995.

Mrs. Barker is survived by a son, Maj. Gen. Nelson Durgin, USAF (Ret), and his wife, Carla, of Bangor and a step-son, Bradley Barker, and his wife, Judy, of Bethel; six grandchildren, Dennis Barker, and wife, Denise, Michael Durgin, and wife, Diana, Donald Barker, and wife Dawn, Marjorie Durgin, Deborah Reed, and husband, Michael, and Daniel Barker;

as well as six great grandchildren. She was pre-deceased by a sister, Ethel Daniels and two brothers, Harry and Percy Twitchell.

Funeral Services were held at the Greenleaf Funeral Home, Bethel, on Friday, March 27. Interment will be in the spring at Norway Pine Grove Cemetery. Donations may be made in her memory to Hospice of Androscoggin Home Health, Strawberry Ave., Lewiston, ME 04240.

Mrs. Ella F. Barnard
1999-09-09

OXFORD - Ella F. Barnard, 97, of Mechanic Falls died Tuesday September 7, 1999.

She was born in Portland on October 26, 1901, the daughter of Harry and Mary W. Foster Lowell.

She was a graduate of Deering High School.

Mrs. Barnard was a homemaker and had a skill of repairing dishware.

She attended the Christian Science Church in Auburn and in her later years attended the Methodist Church in Mechanic Falls. She had lived in the Mechanic Falls area most all her life.

She married Karl Barnard on June 30, 1923 and he died in 1986.

Mrs. Barnard is survived by two grandchildren, Robert W. Barnard Jr. of Mechanic Falls and Nancy and husband Todd Walton of Mechanic Falls; a daughter-in-law, Geraldine Barnard of Mechanic Falls; five great grandchildren, Jennifer Barnard, Darcey Barnard, and Amy Barnard, Mathew Walton, and Lucas Walton.

She was predeceased by her son Robert W. Barnard Sr.

Family and friends are invited to attend graveside services at 2 p.m., Friday, September 10, at the Gracelawn Memorial Park in Auburn. There will be no visitation.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Mrs. Barnard's memory may be sent to the Good Shepherd Food Bank, 415 Lisbon St., Lewiston, Maine 04240.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, Mechanic Falls.

Jean C. Barnes
1999-08-05

NORTH BRIDGTON - Jean C. Barnes, 73, of Chatham, NH died Saturday, July 31,1999, at her summer home on Long Lake in North Bridgton.

She was born in Franklin, MA on April 18, 1926, the daughter of Conrad and Jeanne Mather Fredrickson.

She attended schools there and was a graduate of Franklin High School in the class of 1946. She also attended and graduated from the Framingham Union Hospital School of Nursing in the class of 1946.

After graduating as an R.N. she served with the Cadet Nursing Corp and worked as a private duty nurse. She then worked as the school nurse at Central School in East Bridgwater, MA.

Mrs. Barnes enjoyed traveling, canoeing, spending time at the ocean, and watching birds and other wildlife.

She married Harold Bud Barnes on May 10, 1946. He died on January 9, 1999.

Surviving are two sons, Daniel R. of Gilead and Stephen H. of Fryeburg; a daughter, Meredith A. Arnold of North Bridgton; a sister, Ann Ramsey of Jay; and two grandchildren.

A Memorial Service was held on Wednesday, August 4, at the Raymond-Wentwortth Funeral Home in Bridgton.

In lieu of flowers, please make contributions in Mrs. Barnes' memory to the Fryeburg Rescue Unit, P.O. Box 177, Fryeburg, ME 04037.
