Francis O. Bertrand
1999-06-24

Francis O. Bertrand, 81, of Brigham's Cove, died Saturday, June 19 at his home after a short illness.

Born in Dexter on Aug. 7, 1917, he was the son of George and Lottie Bryant Bertrand. He was educated in Dexter schools.

In September 1939, he married Martha Cutty.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army as a staff sergeant.

In 1940, Mr. Bertrand moved to Bath to work at Bath Iron Works as a machinist. He also worked for Perry's Service Station on Front Street for a short time. He retired from BIW in 1977 after 37 years of service.

After his retirement, he moved to Brigham's Cove, where he had summered for several years.

Mr. Bertrand carved birds and was known as an accomplished artist. He enjoyed the outdoors and after his retirement spent time lobstering.

He was a member of the Harpswell Carvers, the Maine Wood Carvers Association and the Bath Area Senior Citizens.

He was predeceased by his wife in October 1996.

Survivors include a daughter, Betsy E. Bisson of Woolwich; two sons, Dean F. Bertrand and Randy C. Bertrand, both of West Bath; a brother, Everett Bertrand of California; eight grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, June 24 (today) at 2 p.m. at David E. Desmond Funeral Home, 638 High Street, Bath. A reception will follow the services at the Bertrand's home in Brigham's Cove.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Patten Free Library, 33 Summer Street, Bath.

Ralph Louis Berube, Jr.
1999-04-08

HEBRON - Ralph Louis Berube, Jr. 65 a resident of the Bryant Road died early Tuesday, April 6, 1999, at Central Maine Medical Center Lewiston following a long illness.

He was born in Lewiston April 25,1933, the son of Ralph L.and Jean F. Tufts Berube, Jr. and was educated in the schools of Lisbon, Sabattus and NY.

Mr. Berube served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict.

On Oct. 22,1995 he married the former Roina F. Wing in Hebron.

Mr. Berube, who was employed as a taxi driver and dispatcher for Sun City Cab Co. of Lewiston for many years, was also employed with Lewiston Bottled Gas and for the last 15 years was employed by Poland Spring Bottling Co. as a fork lift driver.

He attended the Hebron Community Baptist Church and enjoyed crossword puzzles, hunting, fishing and spending time at his home. He also enjoyed many years of Saturdays at his camp on Mar-shell Pond in Hebron.

Survivors include his wife of Hebron; one daughter, Ms Jean A. Friend of South Paris; one step-daughter, Mrs. Michael (Lora Jean) Mack of Jacksonville, FL; four step- sons, Elwin Wing and his wife Linda of Poland, Jeffery Wing and his wife Sandy of Lewiston, John Wing and his wife Linda of Auburn, Timothy Wing of Oxford; one sister, Ann Brendafur of Fairbanks, AL, a cousin, Maurice Berube of Norfolk, VA; 12 step-grandchildren, Kate , Ema and Jonathan Wing of Auburn, Veronica Thibeault of Auburn, Diana and Bianca Watts of Jacksonville, FL, Ariane Watts of Long Beach, CA, Chelsea Aube-Wing of Lewiston, Manny Wing of Poland, Jeffery Wing of Greene, Michael Wing and Nykki Wing of Durham and one step-great grandson Arron Waddell of Jacksonville, FL

Funeral services will be held at the Hebron Community Baptist Church at 1 p.m. on Friday, April 9; committal will be in Merrill Hill cemetery Hebron; visitation is Thursday, April 8 from 7 to 9 p.m. at The Fortin Group Plummer & Merrill Funeral Home Auburn,located on Turner & Center Streets.

Those wishing may make donations to the American Cancer Society Maine Division, Inc. 52 Federal Street Brunswick, ME 04011-2194.

Dorothy Frazee Bessey
1998-07-02

BUCKFIELD - Dorothy Frazee Bessey, 79, of Buckfield died Thursday, June 25, 1998, at her home after a long illness.

She was born in Mechanic Falls, July 30,1918, the daughter of Frederick L. and Florence Bloom Frazee. She received her early education there and graduated from Norway High School in 1936.

Following graduation, she worked 18 years for New England Telephone Co, Norway Exchange, with the exception of two years in Newport, RI. While there she was asked to return to the Norway office as chief operator. She held this position until her resignation to take care of home and family in 1955. Mrs. Bessey was a life member of the Maine Chapter of the Telephone Pioneers of America. She was a member of the First Congregational Church of South Paris and a former member of the Norway Country Club.

She married Sidney W. Bessey of Buckfield on October 17,1953 in Fryeburg. He passed away on February 26,1988.

Until her illness, `Dottie' was playing bridge weekly and meeting monthly with the `telephone girls'; both gave her much pleasure.

Survivors include her son, Gregory B., and his wife, Judy, of Hebron; a daughter, Shanna C. Bruno, and her husband, Carlo, of Hebron; a sister, Mrs. Chester (Louise) Trask of Hanover, MA; four grandsons, Stephen and Nicholas Racioppi and Ryan and Derek Bruno and a great granddaughter Alexis Racioppi.

Mrs. Bessey was predeceased by her baby brother. Frederick W. Frazee.

Private graveside services were held at Maple Grove Cemetery, Mechanic Falls. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make memorial gifts in her memory to the American Cancer Society, 52 Federal Street, Brunswick,ME. Arrangements were under the direction of Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, Mechanic Falls.

James H. Bierer
1998-12-03

James H. Bierer, 80, former Chairman and President of Pittsburgh Corning Corporation, died on Thanksgiving Day at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

The son of John and Ruth Bierer, he was raised in Waban, Mass., and graduated from Washington and Lee University '40 and Harvard Business School '42.

He joined Corning Glass Works in Corning, N.Y. in 1946, beginning a distinguished career that ended with his retirement in 1979. He started as a market research analyst and later assumed responsibility as manager of advertising and sales promotion. From '64 until the fall of '68 he was Vice President and General Manager of the Consumer Products Division. In the fall of '68 he went to Pittsburgh, Penn. as President of Pittsburgh Corning Corporation. He was named Chairman in 1978 before retiring in 1979.

Mr. Bierer retired to Boothbay Harbor where he continued to be active in many community organizations. He was a Past President of the Boothbay Region YMCA from 1986 to 1988 while serving on the board of Trustees from 1983 to 1989. Under his leadership as Treasurer of the YMCA, he was instrumental in securing the property at Camp Knickerbocker.

He served on the Board of Trustees of St. Andrews Hospital in Boothbay Harbor for eight years during which time he chaired the Finance Committee. Throughout his life, he was also actively involved with the National Boy Scouts of America. He was a member of the Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club where he served on the Board of Trustees and was Rear Commodore for two consecutive years.

Survivors include Arlene Rennick of Boothbay Harbor and Winter Park, Fla.; one brother, John C. Bierer of Auburn, N.Y.; one sister, Ruth F. Ward of Redding, Conn.; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held in Boothbay in the spring of 1999. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Boothbay Region YMCA, P.O. Box 500, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538, St. Andrews Hospital, 6 St. Andrews Lane, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538, or to the Boy Scouts of America.

Arrangements are under the direction of Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Boothbay.

Robert F. Billings
1998-12-10

NORWAY - Robert F. Billings, 76, of South Main Street, Bryant Pond, died early Wednesday evening, December 2, 1998, at Stephens Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Billings was born in East Bethel, August 26, 1922, the son of the late Edward A. and Marjorie (Farrar) Billings. He attended East Bethel schools and graduated from Gould Academy.

A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Army as a Sargent with an anti-aircraft unit, landing on Omaha Beach on D-Day. Mr. Billings served in the European theater, including the Battle of the Bulge.

On July 9, 1943, he married the former Mary Stearns.

Mr. Billings ran the Bethel General Store for 12 years, and was also at various times a carpenter and building supply clerk. He worked for 13 years at Ekco Housewares in Locke Mills from which he retired.

He was a member of the East Bethel, Bear River and Franklin Grange #124 for 50 years, a member of the Bethel American Legion since 1947, as well as the VFW.

Mr. Billings was a member of the Bryant Pond Baptist Church and an active member of the Woodstock Historical Society, serving as president, chairman of the Board of Trustees and on many committees.

He is survived by his wife of over 50 years and two sons Larry and Paul Billings, both of Bryant Pond. Mr. Billings looked forward, in Milton's words, to perpetual peace.

A memorial service was held Saturday, December 5, at the Bryant Pond Baptist Church.

Friends who wish may make memorial donations in Mr. Billings' memory to Woodstock Historical Society, c/o Annella Burnham, 507 Main Street, Bryant Pond, ME 04219.

Arrangements were under the care of the Andrews Funeral Home, South Woodstock.

Myrtle B. Bisbee
1998-05-14

MECHANIC FALLS - Myrtle B. Bisbee, 80, of Jordan Road died Saturday evening, May 9, 1998, at her home.

She was born in Mechanic Falls on March 31, 1918, the daughter of Daniel and Lucy Stewart Coleman.

She attended Mechanic Falls schools and graduated from Mechanic Falls High School. She worked at Poland Spring Inn Job Corp and Auburn Nursing Home and worked cleaning houses. Mrs. Bisbee was a 63-year member of Oxford Grange where she was a past master, overseer and lecturer. She was a member of the Maine State Grange and National Grange and was a Junior Deputy of the state grange for 20 years. She was a CWA leader of Oxford Pomona #2. She married Lewis Bisbee on May 7, 1938.

Survivors include her husband of Mechanic Falls; three sons and their wives, Daniel and Betty of Portsmouth, NH, Rodney and Vicki of West Poland and Leland and Terry of Mechanic Falls; a sister, Hazel Conant of Mechanic Falls; a brother, Raymond Coleman of Poland; eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Bisbee was predeceased by a brother, Ray Coleman, and a sister Methyl Gagne.

Graveside services were held Wednesday at Gracelawn Memorial Park, Auburn. Oxford Grange conducted public memorial services. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make memorial gifts in her memory to the Oxford Grange Scholarship Fund, c/o Hazel Conant, 71 Jordan Road, Mechanic Falls. Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, Mechanic Falls was in charge of arrangements.

Gerard L. Bizier
1999-02-25

EUSTIS, FL - Gerard L. Bizier, 85, of Norway and Grand Island, FL, formerly of Auburn, died on February 18, 1999 at Waterman Hospital in Eustis, Florida from complications of lingering heart disease and diabetes.

He was born on April 2, 1913 in St. Justine, Quebec, Canada, the son of Louis and Delia LaPointe Bizier. His family moved to Auburn in 1919 where he attended school.

He began working at a very young age in local bakeries, shoe shops and then worked many years in the woods as a cook for large logging operations.

He later worked in the shipyard during WW II. In 1947 he opened and operated Jerry's Market on Main St., Auburn for over 20 years, along with being landlord of some 90 apartments in that same neighborhood until his retirement.

He married Jeannette Belanger on April 23, 1935in Rumford. She who passed away in June , 1983 after 48 years of marriage.

He is survived by two sons, Raymond Bizier, and his wife, Claire, of Grand Island, FL and Robert Bizier and his wife, Barbara, of Norway; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; plus many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by twin sons, Louis and Gerard; nine brothers and sisters, Joseph, Joel, Absalon, Benjamin, Marie Gagnon, Marie Ange Provencher, Demerise Frechette, Clara Lagueux and Helena Pratt.

Visitation was held at The Fortin Group F. H. in Auburn. Funeral services were held Monday at Sacred Heart Church with the Rev. Maurice Lebel officiating, and he recited committal prayers at the Interment at St. Peter's Cemetery.

John A. Blackie Richard
1998-11-19

RUMFORD - John A. Blackie Richard, 74, of Rumford died Thursday, November 12, 1998, at the Maine Medical Center in Portland. A lifelong resident of the area, he lived on route 108 in the Smithcrossing area of Rumford.

He was born in Mexico, Maine on June 26, 1924, the son of Andrew and Antoinette (Grenon) Richard, and attended Mexico schools. During W.W. II he served with the US Army as a Technician 5th Grade with the 616th Engineers Base Equipment Company, which included the Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign.

For many years Mr. Richard worked as a mechanic at Oxford Paper Company in Rumford until his retirement in the late 1970s.

From March 1987 until 1995 he worked for the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife as a Hunter Safety Co-ordinator including: ATV, Boat,. Snowmobile, Bow Hunting and Trapping Safety.

He was a communicant of St. Athanasius-St. John Church; Member of Gorizia Lodge # 467, Sons of Italy; 3rd Degree Member of Fr. Ambrose Barry Council #2091, K. of C.; Member of the Webb River Sportsmen's Club; Member of the Napoleon Oulette Post #24, American Legion.

He was married in Rumford on February 25, 1946 to the former Amelia A. Giambattista who survives of Rumford. Other survivors include a son, Michael Richard of Rumford; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Joyce Richard, of Cape Elizabeth; two sisters, Mrs. Rose LeBlanc of Saco and Mrs. Yvonne McCafferty of Mexico; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was pre-deceased by a son, Thomas A. T.A. Richard, who died May 31, 1988 and a sister Mrs. Aldine Viger Cayer who died January 15, 1995.

A Mass was said on Monday at St Athansius-St. John Church, Rumford, with Interment in St. John Cemetery. Meader & Son Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
