Verdel A. Brown

Verdel Allen Brown, 86, of Edgecomb, died Saturday, January 22 at his home in Edgecomb.

Born June 11, 1913 in Edgecomb, he was the only son of James R. and Alice Maude York Brown. He was educated in the little red brick schoolhouse near his home on the River Road in Edgecomb.

Due to the poor health of his parents, he began employment at a young age at Haggett's Garage in Wiscasset. By his mid 20s he began fishing the Damariscotta River for lobsters and crabs. Together with a partner, he began a lobster and crab dealership in Boothbay Harbor. Later, the partners built and operated a lobster pound in Farnham's Cove in East Boothbay. After the Boothbay Harbor dealership was sold, Mr. Brown purchased the old clam factory building in the Medomak section of Bremen and operated a lobster dealership under the name of Lusty Lobster, Inc. This business made him well known to lobster dealers down the East Coast of the United States to the Maritimes of Canada. He also purchased a substantial land parcel in Farnham's Point which he developed forming the Farnham Point Association.

He was predeceased by a grandson, Kenneth Allen Brown, who died in 1999. Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Dorothy A. Darling Brown of Edgecomb; a son, Robert R. Brown of Edgecomb; a granddaughter, Dianne Gustafson of Woolwich; and six great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held in the spring. Arrangements are under the direction of Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay.

Raymond L. Brown
2000-02-24

Raymond L. Brown, 75, died Sunday, February 20 at St. Andrews Hospital in Boothbay Harbor.

Born May 10, 1924 in West Norwalk, Connecticut, he was the son of Homer and Minnie Angelman Brown.

For many years he was a contractor.

On February 1, 1947 he married Louise Adele "Pye" Comstock Brown in Norwalk, Connecticut. They moved to Boothbay in 1952.

Mr. Brown was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army Hg. Co. 2 BN 342 Infantry Regiment. He received the African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Theater Combat Infantry Badge, Expert Rifle Badge, Campaign Ribbon, American Theater Campaign Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, Victory Medal, and was honorably discharged as a Technician Fourth Grade. He was a member of the Norwalk Fire Department, Norwalk, Conn.; and since 1952, the Boothbay Fire Department; past president of the Lions Club and Boothbay Chamber of Commerce. He helped build the chamber building. He was also a member of Bay View Lodge #196, Valley of Rockland, Valley of Portland, Lincoln Chapter No. 3, Kora Temple and the American Legion Post #36. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Louise Adele "Pye" Brown of Boothbay; one son, Timber R. Brown of Boothbay; and one sister, Beatrice Connolly of Newtown, Conn.

A Masonic service by Bay View Lodge #196 was held on Wednesday, February 23. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Shriner's Hospital, c/o Kora Temple, 11 Sabattus St., Lewiston, ME 04240-7090. Arrangements were under the direction of Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay.

Kenneth A. Brown
1999-12-02

Kenneth A. Brown, 40, of Edgecomb, died Wednesday, November 24 at Midcoast Hospital after a long battle with cancer.

Born July 26, 1959 in Bath, he was the son of Robert and Cynthia MacDonald Brown of Edgecomb.

After attending schools in Edgecomb and Wiscasset, he sought out a career in lobstering out of the Medomak and Damariscotta Rivers. In the 1980s, Mr. Brown obtained his Class A Driver's License and entered into a partnership with his father running a tractor-trailer trucking business. He drove up and down the East Coast until 1990, when he returned to lobstering.

Having a combination of a creative mind and a handyman's abilities, he was able to provide for himself by building or creating items he needed.

Initially, he built his own traps at age 16 and sold the lobsters to his father's business, Lusty Lobster in Bremen. In 1992, he almost single handedly rebuilt his 40-foot lobster boat from the ribs outward. He used lumber he harvested and milled from his own property in East Edgecomb. In 1996, he designed and began construction on his home on the River Road using trees he harvested and milled in Edgecomb. Working mostly alone but with some help from his stepson, Mike, he continued construction of his house until one week before his death, when he was unable to continue.

Survivors include his wife, Evelin Brown; a daughter, Karen Brown of Edgecomb; a son, James Brown of Edgecomb; a stepson, Michael Orff of Edgecomb; his parents, Robert and Cynthia Brown of Edgecomb; a sister Dianne Gustafson of Woolwich; his grandparents, V. Allen and Dorothy Brown of Edgecomb, and Kenneth and Marjorie MacDonald of Woolwich.

A funeral service was held on Friday, November 26 at the Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay.

Interment followed in the Brown Family Graveyard, on Mr. Brown's property in East Edgecomb.

Donations are appreciated and can be sent to the Faith Baptist Church.

Arrangements are under the direction of Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Boothbay.

Lawrence P. Brown
1998-06-25

OXFORD - Lawrence P. Brown, 84, of Oxford died Wednesday June 3, 1998, at his residence in Oxford Meadows. He was born in Nova Scotia on August 10, 1913, the son of George E. and Emma LaBlanc Brown.

He attended school in Wakefield, MA. Mr. Brown worked various jobs throughout his life. He married Eloise Yoxtheiner on June 25, 1966. They traveled to and from Nova Scotia for 32 years and kept a log book of their travels.

He loved to entertain friends and family with magic tricks. Mr. Brown was a musician who could play many instruments and he loved to dance with his wife Eloise. He also was a talented clock maker.

He is survived by his wife Eloise of Oxford; a son, Gary Fuller of Oklahoma City, OK; five daughters, Joan MacDonald of South Portland, Jeanette Toothaker of Lynnfield, MA, June M. Howard of Bryant Pond, Susan Sweetser of Bryant Pond, Peggy Lewis of Arizona, Anita Defranco of New Hampshire; one brother, Leo Brown of Wakefield, MA; three sisters, Francis MacKenzie and Florence Kulacz of Wakefield, MA, and Mildred Wash of Melrose, MA; 32 grandchildren; 53 great-grandchildren, two great-great- grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by three brothers.

Memorial services were held on Saturday, June 27 at St. Catherine of Sienna Church in Norway with Father Lawrence Conley as celebrant. Arrangements were under the direction of Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, Norway.

Arnol K. Brown
1998-07-30

SMALL POINT - Arnol K. Brown, 65, of Bethel, died unexpectedly Sunday morning, July 26, 1998, at his summer residence at Head Beach Campground, Small Point.

Mr. Brown was born in Bethel on October 13, 1932, the son of the late Arnold R. and Alice (Smith) Brown. He was a lifelong resident of that community, maintaining his residence in the house that he was born in.

He attended Bethel schools and graduated from Gould Academy in 1952.

In October of that year he joined the U.S. Marines, attaining the rank of sergeant, being stationed at Parris Island, South Carolina as a drill instructor until his discharge in 1955.

On October 24, 1957 he married the former Mary Mealand. For 40 years he owned and operated Brown's Welding Shop in Bethel, for many years being accompanied by his `best friend' and companion, his yellow lab, Bull.

Mr. Brown had worked for the Portland Pipeline, and had served in a part-time capacity with the Bethel Police, as well as the Oxford County Sheriff's Department. He was an attendant of the West Bethel Union Church, held membership in Mundt-Allen, American Legion Post #81 of Bethel, for over 40 years and was Past Commander of that post.

Active in Masonic affairs, he was a member and Past Master of Bethel Lodge #97, the Scottish Rite Bodies, and Kora Temple Shrine.

Mr. Brown was a current trustee and treasurer of the Bethel Water District, a current member of the Bethel Budget Committee, and a current member of Oxford County Selective Service Board, as well as a life-member of the Bethel Historical Society, and a former member of the Bethel Fire Department and Bethel Rescue.

Besides his wife of 41 years, he is survived by three daughters, Malinda B. Seames and her husband Alan of Woodstock, Nancy B. Darling and Gene A. Coffin of Phippsburg and Betsy A. Brown and her husband Philip A. Oliver of Harrison; six grandchildren, Hana E. and Will A. Seames, Abbi L. and Jared B. Darling, and Luke P. and Maggie J. Oliver; a nephew Jack A. Greig and his wife Patty of Bethel.

Mr. Brown was predeceased by a sister, June Greig, in March of 1998.

Memorial services were held Wednesday evening at the West Bethel Union Church. Masonic services were conducted at 6 p.m.

It was Arnie's request, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Arnol K. Brown Welding Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Norway Savings Bank, Parkway Road, Bethel, ME 04217.

Arrangements were under the direction of Greenleaf Funeral Home in Bethel.

Raynor K. Brown
1998-11-12

NORWAY - Raynor K. Brown age 83 of North Waterford died Tuesday, November 11, 1998 at the Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway.

He was born in North Waterford on July 13, 1915, the son of Harry and Maud Dresser Brown. Mr. Brown started his schooling at North Waterford until his parents moved to South Paris where he spent school years 6th grade through high school. He graduated from South Paris High School in 1933 where he participated in football, the debate team, and was manager of the baseball team,

In the fall of 1933, he entered the University of Maine where he was a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity and served as president in his junior year. He also served as a member of the Student Senate. He graduated in 1937 with a B.S. in Forestry. In 1937, he bought his first timberland and started a logging business.

In 1945, he joined his brother in the North Waterford Spool Co., but left after two years to continue in his logging business. In 1950, he started a sand and gravel business. In 1958, he started a concrete business which rapidly grew through the 60s. From 1960 to 1975 he carried on a `hot top' operation and in 1974 began contract paving local state roads. In 1975, the business was sold to Cienbro Corp.

Mr. Brown has willingly given his time, energy and financial resources to various organizations and entities. For over 50 years he was a member of the Society of American Foresters, the Association of Consulting Foresters, and Past President of the Western Maine Forestry Forum. He was a member of the Norway-Paris Kiwanis Club, 50-plus-year member of the Mt. Tirem Lodge AF&AM, and former director of the Norway National Bank now Key Bank.

In 1938, Mr. Brown was Chairman of the Board of Selectmen of Waterford and later served four additional years as a Waterford Selectman. He served 20 years on the Waterford School Board.

Mr. Brown was a member of the North Waterford Congregational Church and has carried on the traditions of his family with strong financial support. He was actively involved as vice president and trustee, overseeing repairs and improvements. Mr. Brown donated land and was active in the plans for securing a new parsonage. He served as a trustee and financial advisor for the Oxford County United Parish. Mr. Brown showed a great interest in the Oxford Hills School District by providing the district with football, baseball, and track fields. Special recognition was given to Mr. Brown at the first football game played on what would now be considered the old football field. The Oxford Hills Chamber of Commerce awarded Mr. Brown with the Community Service Award on February 4, 1991.. Raynor and his wife Georgia established a very substantial scholarship fund for students from the town of Waterford to assist them in furthering their education, He has also established a charitable gift annuity in the University of Maine Foundation.

Mr. Brown was a founding Father of Stephens Memorial Hospital, beginning service on the original board in 1946, 11 years before Stephens opened its doors, first as Central Oxford County Hospital Association and then as Stephens Memorial Hospital. He served as a Hospital Trustee for 46 years, is a Past President and has served on the hospital's finance, building and other committees over the years,

Mr. Brown enjoyed watching his grandchildren grow and mature.

Mr. Brown married the former Georgia Thayer of South Paris in June of 1940.

He is survived by his wife of South Paris; one son, Harry of Venice, FL, two daughters, Ellie Heath of Waterford, and Becky Burke of South Paris; four grandchildren, Joseph and Nicholas Burke both of South Paris, Toby Heath of Waterford, and Jeremy Brown of Venice, FL. He was predeceased by a son, Keith.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, November 14, North Waterford Congregational Church with the Rev. Janice Wilcox. Interment will be in the Woodlawn cemetery in North Waterford. There is no visitation.

Donations in Mr. Brown's memory may be sent to the North Waterford Congregational Church. Arrangements are under the direction of the Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, Norway.

James L. Brown
1999-05-27

BETHEL - James L. Brown, 84, of Bethel, died Thursday, May 20, 1999 at his residence.

Born in Fryeburg on January 26, 1915, he was the son of the late E. Leroy and Abbie (Richardson) Brown. Educated in the local Fryeburg schools, James graduated from Fryeburg Academy with the class of 1933.

He married the former Beatrice Brooks on August 1, 1940.

Mr. Brown enlisted in the Coast Guard during World War II, where he was employed as a Sound Operator. He protected the Eastern Sea board during the war.

Upon returning from the Coast Guard, James became the owner and operator of Brown's Variety in Bethel for 47 years, before retiring in 1983. Many children have made many visits to Brown's Variety to spend their allowance, Mr. Brown would always wait patiently as the children perused his wares and counted out penny candy to purchase.

Mr. Brown was an active member of the Bethel Senior Citizens and the Mt. Abram Fish & Game Club. He could often be seen working in his garden and taking care of his perennials. He also enjoyed fishing, especially ice fishing.

Besides his wife of 56 years, Mr. Brown is survived by two sons, Leroy of Norfolk, VA and Owen of Bethel; two daughters, Linda Foster of Pittsfield, MA and Nancy Vargiu of Sardinia, Italy; two sisters, Rachel McKay of Bethel and Arlene Brown of Salem, NH; 11 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. A brother, Alfred, predeceased him.

Graveside services were held on Saturday, May 22, at 2 p.m. at the Riverside Cemetery, Bethel.

Those who wish may make donations in Mr. Brown's memory to the Mt. Abram Fish & Game c/o Ernest Angevine, 543 NW Bethel Rd., Bethel, ME 04217.

Arrangements were under the care of the Greenleaf Funeral Home, Bethel.

Mr. Weston L. Brown
2000-02-25

NORWAY - Weston L. Brown, 91, of Ashton Road, Norway, a resident of that town for the greater portion of his life, died Saturday, February 19 at Stephens Memorial Hospital.

He was born in Weld, ME, the son of the late Vern and Ethel (Abbott) Brown.

Mr. Brown graduated from Farmington High School in 1928, and attended Gray's Business College, of Portland.

An office manager by vocation, he had been associated with Savin Construction, ofConnecticut, in that capacity, since the early 50s, when he was involved in the Maine Turnpike construction. His work took him to sites on the entire Eastern seaboard.

In 1973, he retired and perused his passions of gardening and knitting. His garden bounty was shared by relatives, friends and neighbors.

Mr. Brown's knit items, especially socks and mittens, were particularly enjoyed by his grandchildren, not only for their warmth, but for their fine craftsmanship.

He married the former Hazel Lafoy, January 10, 1930, and she predeceased him on November 28, 1976.

He is survived by two sons: Randall Brown, and Clifton Brown, both of Norway; eight grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; nine great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Mr. Brown was predeceased by two sisters; five brothers; a granddaughter; and a great granddaughter.

Graveside funeral services will be held in the Pine Grove Cemetery, Norway, in the spring, preceded by a notice. Arrangements are by the Andrews Funeral Home, South Woodstock.
