Stanley Bion Brown
2000-09-21

STONEHAM, MA - Stanley Bion Brown, 81, of Wakefield, MA, whose career in the trucking industry in Maine and in the Boston area spanned more than 60 years, died Wednesday, September 13, 2000 at the Bear Hill Nursing Center following a long illness.

Born in 1919 in Waterford, the son of Louis and Clara Brown, Mr. Brown began his trucking career during high school when he worked for his guardian and uncle Howard Sanborn, founder of Sanborn's Motor Express in Norway.

In 1950 Mr. Brown bought Lincoln's Express, an intrastate coastal trucking concern headquartered in Portland which he operated until 1958 when he returned to Sanborn's Express as operations manager.

He moved to Lynnfield, MA with his late wife, Priscilla A. Morton, in 1962 to become terminal manager first for Sanborn's Express in Stoneham, MA and later for Cole's Express and Lombard Brothers.

He retired from Crystal Motor Express in Wakefield, MA in 1997. Mr. Brown served his country faithfully in the U. S. Navy during WWII.

He was a past member of the Shriners and Masons.

His love of golf resulted in his becoming a charter member of the Thompson Club in North Reading, MA. An avid fly fisherman, he especially relished annual fishing trips to Pierce Pond in Maine with relatives.

He congenial nature and quick wit won him many friends while his generous nature benefitted many charities and organizations.

He is survived by his wife, Gertrude (Burke) of Wakefield, MA; two sons, S. Bruce of Portland and Peter A. of Reading, MA; a stepson, M. Robert Rose and a step daughter, Susan Smith both of Wellesley, MA; a brother; Liston Brown of Poland; a half brother, Reid Grover of North Waterford and a half sister, Donna Dunn of Mechanic Falls and eight grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Barbara Alsop.

Funeral services were held on Monday, September 18 at 10:30 a.m. at the North Waterford Congregational Church with Interment at Riverside Annex cemetery in South Paris.

Family and friends attended visiting hours at the McDonald Funeral Home, Wakefield, MA on Saturday and at the Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, Norway, Maine on Sunday

The family would welcome donations to the Nephrology Research Fund c/o Children's Hospital Trust, 300 Longwood Avenue, Boston, MA 02115 in recognition of Mr. Brown's young grandson, Ian Brown, who is currently a patient at Children's Hospital.

Jeannette Brown, 80

Mrs. Brown was a member of First Congregational Church of New Gloucester, and recently joined the Gray Congregational Church. She was a member of Gray Meal Site and Gray Senior Citizens and several New Gloucester organizations.

She is survived by five sons, Doug and Alan, of Gray, Spencer, of Cummings, GA, Kenneth and Tom, both of New Gloucester; a sister, Theresa Riel, of Ludlow, MA; 18 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Visiting hours will be from 7 to 9 P.M. on Friday, August 4, at Wilson Funeral Home. A funeral will be held at 10:30 A.M. Saturday at First Congregational Church of New Gloucester. Burial will be private.

George H. Browne
1998-12-03

WEST PARIS - George H. Browne, 62, passed away at his home on Friday, November 27, 1998, after recently being diagnosed with cancer.

Mr. Browne was born in Winchester, MA on February 5, 1936, the son of the late William C. and Helen F. (Donehy) Brown, but had resided in West Paris for the past 13 years.

Mr. Browne graduated from Wakefield High School and attended Northeastern University in Boston. He was a heavy machinery salesman for the Do-All Company in Needham, MA for many years, until purchasing a small family-run convenience store, The Village Mart, in Bradford, NH, which he and his wife operated from 1978-1985.

After selling the store, the couple moved to West Paris where he retired.

Mr. Browne was an avid hockey player for Wakefield High and also Northeastern. While living in Tewksbury, MA he was the head hockey coach for the Pee-Wees and Bantam teams. In addition to his love of hockey, he enjoyed fishing and was a long-time member of the Wakefield Masonic Lodge.

Mr. Browne is survived by his wife of 40 years, the former Andrea C. Hallstrom; two sons, William C. of Thornton, NH and Jonathan S. of Oxford; two daughters, Carolyn J. Rowell of West Paris and Kristina E. McIlhinney of Casco; a brother, John W. Browne of Chester NH and two grandchildren, Jonathan J. Browne and Hunter G. Rowell.

Family services were held at the Andrews Funeral Home in South Woodstock. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 52 Federal Street, Brunswick, ME 04011

Ruth P. Bruen
2000-01-13

Ruth (Pearce) Bruen, 83, formerly of Sherborn, Mass., died Thursday, January 6, 2000, at St. Patricks Manor in Framingham.

A resident of St. Patricks Manor for the past 10 years, Mrs. Bruen was a resident of Sherburn for 30 years, and lived and summered for many years in Boothbay Harbor.

Born in Boston, she was a daughter of the late George H. and Marie L. (Duval) Pearce.

She was a graduate of Regis College in Weston, Mass., Class of 1938, majoring in chemistry and mathematics. She received a Master's degree in education from Framingham State College in 1973.

Her teaching career included the Charles River School in Dover: the Framingham and Boston School systems.

A member of St. Theresa Parish in Sherburn, Mrs. Bruen was a former member of the parish choir and taught in the parish C.C.D. program for many years.

A watercolorist, twelve years ago she developed a talent for painting that has won her many honors and commissions, including a place in the Muscular Dystrophy Association's permanent art gallery. She had suffered from Muscular Dystrophy for 40 years. In 1999, she received the Massachusetts Personal Achievement Award from the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Mrs. Bruen was an active member of the St. Patricks Manor community and served as president of the Residents Council. She was also a member of the Brick House Gallery in Boothbay Harbor.

She was predeceased by her husband, John A. Bruen, and brother, John J. Pearce.

Survivors include three children, Christina M. Bruen of North Dartmouth, Margaret M. Baldridge of Kent, Washington, and RuthAnne M. of Cortland, New York; two brothers, the Most Rev. Archbishop George H. Pierce of Providence, Rhode Island, and Paul F. Pearce of Gladwyne, Penn.; two sisters, Dorothy M. Bruen of Centerville, Virginia, and Marie T. Higgins of Boothbay Harbor; and six grandchildren.

A funeral mass was held in the Chapel of St. Patricks Manor in Framingham on Monday, January 10. Principal Celebrant was her brother, Archbishop George H. Pearce. Burial followed at Pine Hill cemetery in Sherborn.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her name may be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, 33 Lyman Street, Suite 304B, Westborough, MA 01581, or St. Patricks Manor Residents Fund, 863 Central Street, Framingham, MA 01701.

Mr. James C. Bryant
1999-07-08

JACKSONVILLE, FL - James C. Bryant died June 24, in Jacksonville, FL.

He was born in Buckfield on May 14, 1923.

Mr. Bryant graduated from Buckfield High School in 1940.

After WW II was declared in 1941, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force on January 1, 1942. For four years he was stationed in Los Angeles and Chico, CA. Then he spent one year in Italy. He was discharged on January 1, 1946.

On June 9, 1946, Mollie Davis and James C. Bryant were married in South Paris. Mr. Bryant became an employee for Ripley and Fletcher, a Ford-Mercury dealership on January 1, 1951, and remained with the company for 35 years. He retired to St. Petersburg, FL on January 1, 1986.

Mr. Bryant is survived by his wife, Mollie; a son, James David; a daughter-in-law, Bonnie; four brothers, John, Richard, Joseph, and Billy; one granddaughter, Cathy; and three great-grandchildren.

A private memorial service will be held.

Mrs. Emma A. Bryant
1999-11-04

SOUTH PARIS - Emma A. Bryant, 89, formerly of Bath died Monday, November 1, 1999 at the Market Square Health and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born in Jackson, ME, on April 19, 1910, the daughter of Lowell and Florence Morton Zwicker.

She was a graduate of Morse High School.

Mrs. Bryant married Harding P. Bryant who predeceased her in 1972.

She worked in data processing for Bath Iron Works many years before retiring in 1972. Coming from Freedom, ME, the Bryant family lived in Bath for many years.

Mrs. Bryant was the Past Worthy Matron and Lifetime Member of the Josiah H. Drummond Order of the Eastern Star, Member of the Bath Country Club, and an avid golfer.

She is survived by her daughter, Duveen Dews of Otisfield; a son, George E. Bryant, of South Paris; two sisters, Barbara Tyler of Randolph and Glenita Mudie of Gardiner; two brothers, Raymond Zwicker of Redding, MA and Arthur Zwicker of Brownville Junction, ME; eight grandchildren, and 13 great grandchildren.

There will be a graveside service held on Thursday, November 4 at 11 a.m. in the Pleasant Hill cemetery in Freedom, ME with Rev. Vern Wood officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, Norway.

Carolyn S. Bryce
1999-02-25

NORWAY - Carolyn S. Bryce, 56, of South Paris died Sunday, February 21 at Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway.

She was born in Portland on September 21, 1942, the daughter of Harold and Virginia Vose Sweetser. She was educated in Portland schools.

She had been a housewife and most recently worked at Supreme Shoe in Lewiston.

She married Lewis F. Bryce on October 21, 1966.

She is survived by her husband of South Paris; four daughters, Patty Hawkes of Auburn, Carol A. (Bryce) Weeks of South Paris, Virginia A. Taylor of Bryant Pond, and Wendy A. Bryce of South Paris; a son, Harold WS Bryce of Lewiston; a sister, Mary Hansen, of California and 17 grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, Norway. Interment will be at Brooklawn cemetery in Portland in the spring.

Gordon R. Bryer
1998-12-03

Gordon Roscoe Bryer, 82, died Monday, November 30 at St. Andrews Hospital in Boothbay Harbor.

Born May 28, 1916 in Boothbay, he was the son of Roscoe and Lula Seavey Bryer. He grew up and attended local schools in Boothbay.

Mr. Bryer was a shipfitter for many local shipyards. He also worked at Bath Iron Works and at Bryer's Metal Fabrication. He also worked as a heavy equipment operator. Many fishermen and boat owners called on him to repair their boats.

He was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the V.F.W. Mr. Bryer enjoyed dancing, reading and riding around the countryside.

He was predeceased by a son, Donald G. Bryer who died in 1975, and by a sister, Virginia Brewer.

Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Priscilla Giles Bryer of Boothbay; three sons, Gordon R. Bryer of Walpole, Francis Colby of Boothbay and Daniel G. Bryer of Dresden; one daughter, Shani Bryer of Boothbay Harbor; ten grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Visiting hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, December 3 at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Route 27, Boothbay. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Al Roberts will officiate. Burial will follow in the Evergreen cemetery in Boothbay. Arrangements are under the direction of Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Boothbay.
