Randall L. Buck
1998-03-12

Randall L. Buck, 70, of West Paris died Wednesday, March 4, 1998, at Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway. He was born in West Paris on January 10, 1928, the son of Arthur and Lula Herrick Buck. He was educated in West Paris schools. Mr. Buck had worked at Gould and Scammon in Auburn and at Marcal Paper Co. in Mechanic Falls.

He was a veteran of World War II serving in the United States Army. He married Florence E. Mayberry on July 6, 1957, and she died on November 19, 1993.

He is survived by one step-son, Donald W. Dillon of Brownville; one step-daughter, Coleene Moody of Gardner; one half-sister, Mary Billings, of South Paris; one aunt, Sarah Doughty of West Paris; three step-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. He also was survived by a special friend Muriel Brine of Norway.

He was pre-deceased by a sister Frances Millett in 1986.

Graveside services will be held in the spring at the Maple Grove cemetery in Mechanic Falls. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association Maine Affiliate, Box 346, Augusta, Maine 04330 or to the American Lung association of Maine, 128 Sewall Street, Augusta, ME 04330. Arrangements are under the direction of the Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, Norway.

Mrs. Irene S. Buck
1999-10-28

ANDOVER - Irene S. Buck, 91, of Andover, formerly of Milton Plantation, died unexpectedly at her residence on Friday, October 22.

Mrs. Buck was born in Buckfield, the daughter of the late Lineous R. and Nellie (Wood) Cole.

She attended the Milton Plantation Schools and married Mervin Buck.

She was an animal lover and enjoyed spending time with her family.

She is survived by one daughter, Rita Wilson, and her husband, Dennis, of Greenwood; two sons, Stanwood Pingree and his wife, Joyce, of Andover, and Arthur Pingree and his wife, Tammy, of Andover; 16 grandchildren, many great-grand children, and several great-great grandchildren.

Graveside funeral services were held on Monday, October 25, at the Abbotts Mills Cemetery, with the Rev. Lloyd Waterhouse officiating.

Arrangements were conducted by the Andrews Funeral Home in South Woodstock.

Frederick Burgess Sr.
1999-10-28

Frederick L. Burgess Sr., 76, of Wiscasset, died Sunday, October 24 at Amenity Manor in Topsham.

Born in Yarmouth on January 15, 1923, he was the son of William T. and Flora (Mason) Burgess.

As a young boy he moved to Woolwich and attended Dresden schools. He was employed as a carpenter for area construction companies. On February 1, 1948, he married Lottie Casey. He and his wife owned and operated Burgess Lumber Yard on Route 1 in Woolwich for 15 years retiring in 1975. He was a carpenter foreman for a number of years for construction companies in the Portland area.

Survivors include his wife, Lottie Burgess of Wiscasset; two sons, Frederick L. Burgess Jr. of Fairfield, Conn., and Ames A. Burgess of Woolwich; one sister, Mrs. Robert (Anna) Allen of Woolwich; and two grandchildren.

Visiting hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, October 29, at Mayo, Curtis & Hill Funeral Home, 819 High Street, Bath. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, October 30 at the funeral home with Rev. Floyd Carter officiating. Burial will follow in Greenlawn cemetery in Wiscasset.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association of Maine, 163 Lancaster Street, Portland, ME 04011, or to the Parkinson's Association, c/o Carl Barker, 107 Woodville Road, Falmouth, ME 04105.

Harry R. Burgess
1998-10-29

NORWAY Harry R. Burgess, 91, died Wednesday, October 14, 1998, at Stephens Memorial Hospital, where he had been a patient a short time.

Born in Auburn on April 6, 1907, he was the son of the late Alton L. and Olive A. (Buck) Burgess. He received his education in the Peru and Dixfield schools.

A farmer for most of his life, Mr. Burgess raised steers and milk cattle from his farm, the One-Acre Farm on the Heikkinen Road in South Woodstock. He also ran a store in the South Woodstock area for several years. He more recently lived in West Paris.

The past several years Mr. Burgess made pine wood baskets, which people would generally use as flower

planters. Harry enjoyed volunteering his talents to help his communities and volunteered many hours helping to build the grandstands at the West Paris baseball field.

A member of the New England Oxen and Team Association and the Milk and Short Horn Association of the Untied States of America, he was a fixture at many county fairs. Many good friends claim that Mr. Burgess did not miss a single county fair in the State of Maine for the past 50 years. He had attended the Oxford County Fair so often that the Lewiston Sun Journal recently wrote an article about his unprecedented attendance at that fair. He will be remembered as a well-known local character around the towns of West Paris and Woodstock.

His many long-time friends survive.

Graveside services were held on Wednesday, October 28, at the South Woodstock Cemetery, Andrews Road., South Woodstock. Those who wish may make donations to help furnish a memorial marker for Mr. Burgess. Donations made be sent to Gavin Hutchinson, 64 Andrews Rd., Bryant Pond, ME 04219. Arrangements were under the care of the Andrews Funeral Home, South Woodstock.

Ruth F. Burke
1998-09-17

Ruth Fairbanks Burke, 96, of Bath, died Saturday, September 12 at Dionne Commons in Brunswick.

She was born in Winthrop on August 1, 1902. She married John H. Burke and they resided in Bath. Mrs. Burke was a longtime summer resident of Squirrel Island.

She was predeceased by her husband John H. Burke Sr. and one son Richard Burke.

Survivors include one son, John H. Burke Jr. of Sudbury, Mass; one daughter, Mrs. James (Ruth) Marshall of Fayetteville, N.Y.; seven grandchildren; and 12 greatgrandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at a later day on Squirrel Island. Memorial contributions may be made to the Squirrel island Chapel Association or the Ladies Independent Association, Squirrel Island, ME 04570. Arrangements are by Mayo, Curtis & Hill Funeral Home, 819 High Street, Bath.

Donald T. Burkhardt
1998-08-27

Donald T. Burkhardt, 78, of South Yarmouth, Mass., died Sunday, August 23, 1998 at Cape Cod Hospital.

Born in Bath, Maine, July 13, 1920, he was the son of Hannah Taylor and John E. Burkhardt.

Mr. Burkhardt graduated from Thayer Academy in 1938 and graduated from Cornell University in 1942 with a degree in civil engineering. He enlisted in the United States Navy, where he attained the rank of Lieutenant. He married Sybil Johnston on Oct. 17, 1942. He began his career at Bath Iron Works, in Bath, Me., in 1946 as a draftsman and was promoted to assistant machinery superintendent in 1954. He resigned from BIW in 1968 as assistant works manager. He moved to Maryland in 1968 to work at Bethlehem Steel as general superintendent. He was promoted to assistant general manager and retired as general manager in 1982 after completing the Saudi Naval Expansion Program for Bethship International. He moved to South Yarmouth, Mass. from Annapolis in 1983.

He was a member of Alpha TAO Omega, The American Rose Society, a charter member of the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, a life member of the BPO Elks, and a life member of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, his sister Dorothy Kelley of Bath, Maine, his daughter Donna B. Phinney of Wiscasset, Maine, his son John E. Burkhardt of Annapolis, Maryland, two granddaughters and one grandson.

A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday in the Hallett Funeral Home, 273 Station Avenue, South Yarmouth, Mass.

The family requests that memorial donations be made to The Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens P.O. Box 234, Boothbay, Maine, 04537.

Sandra J. Burnham
1999-10-14

Sandra J. (Ziter) Burnham, 47, of Jensen Beach, Florida, died Monday, October 11 at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire. born in Barre, Vermont on May 13, 1952, she was the daughter of Herbert J. and Dorothy (McDonald) Ziter. She was a graduate of Lyndon Institute, class of 1970. On November 14, 1975, she married Douglas Burnham. Since 1982 they have lived in Florida. She had been a long-time summer resident of Boothbay Harbor.

Mrs. Burnham was an avid supporter of the YMCA in Boothbay Harbor. She served as chairwoman of several St. Michaels School Auctions in Stuart, Florida. She enjoyed buying, selling and collecting antiques. She was always willing to help people in need.

Survivors include her husband, Douglas Burnham of Jensen Beach, Fla.; two sons, Tyler Burnham of Amherst, N.H., and Toby Burnham of Port St. Lucy, Fla.; three step-children; her father, Herbert J. Ziter Sr. of Lyndonville, Vt.; a brother, Herbert J. Ziter Jr. and his wife Barbara of Waterford, Vt.; a sister, Ann Anders and her husband Mark of West Palm Beach, Fla.; nieces and nephews, Michelle Ziter, Jeffrey Ziter and Riley Anders. She was predeceased by her mother, Dorothy Ziter, just this past August. A memorial Mass will be held on Thursday, October 14 at 11 a.m. at St. Elizabeth Church in Lyndonville, Vt., with The Rev. Thomas Mosher celebrant.

Burial will follow at St. Elizabeth cemetery in Lyndonville.

In lieu of flowers, donations made in her memory may be directed to Boothbay Region YMCA, Route 27, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538.

Arrangements are by Guibord Funeral Home, 15 Main Street, Lyndonville, VT.

Stanley A. Burns
1999-09-23

LEWISTON - Stanley A. Burns, 78, of Robinson Hill Road, Oxford died Monday, September 13, at Central Maine Medical Center after a short illness.

He was born in St. Albans on December 2, 1920, the son of David A. and Mabel (Hunt) Burns. He married Daphne Towle on December 2, 1948.

Prior to his retirement he worked as a building contractor. He loved all pets, fishing, and gardening, and he also dabbled with electronics. He enjoyed playing with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of Oxford; six sons, Gene of Bridgton, Clarence Mickey and Mark both of Lewiston, Leslie of Oxford, Alexander and Daniel both of Mechanic Falls; three daughters, Frances Lavoie of Oxford, Diana Brown of Lewiston, Evangeline Burns of Lewiston; two brothers, Gerald of St. Albans and Homer of Jacksonville, NC; one sister, Beatrice Kimball of Casco; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was pre-deceased by a son, John in 1963 and a brother, David in 1998.

Marguerite E. Butterfield
1998-03-05

SOUTH PARIS Funeral services for Mrs. Marguerite E. Butterfield, were conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb., 27, 1998, at the South Paris First Congregational Church.

Officiating was Rev. Mark Hatfield, Pastor of the First Congregational Church. The organist was Virginia Noble.

Music selections included Amazing Grace and The Old Rugged Cross

Words of remembrance were given by her granddaughter, Pam Brockett, and her daughter, Stephanie Butterfield and were followed by a prayer by her daughter, Priscilla Bickford.

Pall bearers were David Bickford, Chris McDonald, Terry Brockett, James Seely, Leslie Butterfield and Peter De Simon.

Interment will be in the spring at the Riverside Annex Cemetery, South Paris.

Arrangements were under the care of the Meader & Son Funeral Home, Norway.

Lawrence F. Fortier

Lawrence F. Fortier, 70, of Otisfield, died Thursday morning, April 23, 1998, at his home on the Scribner Hill Road. He was born in this same home on January 12, 1928, the son of Fred and Velma (Edwards) Fortier.

Mr. Fortier served in the U. S. Navy in World War II in the South Pacific.

On June 20,1947, he married the former Pauline Hanscom.

Mr., Fortier worked as a caretaker at Camp Truda in Otisfield which closed in 1958. He worked as a licensed plumber for many years and most recently worked at Camp Fernwood in Poland.

Mr. Fortier enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing and in his later years, bird watching as well as visits from his great-granddaughter, Hannah. His grandchildren were a great joy to him.

Surviving are his wife; two daughters and their husbands, Susan and Henry Keisman of Otisfield and Julie and Ben Ashley of Conway, NH; three sisters and their husbands, Louise and Norman Spencer of Norway, Catherine and Charles Spencer of East Oxford, Eleanor and Sulo Pulkkinen of East Oxford; two brothers, Fred Fortier, III and his wife Dottie of Gray and Lindley Fortier and Joyce of Oxford; two grandsons and their wives, Barry and Gail Keisman of Otisfield and Mark and Lisa Keisman of South Paris; two granddaughters, Amy and Licia Ashley of Conway, NH and one great-granddaughter, Hannah Keisman of Otisfield.

Graveside services were held Tuesday Elmwood Cemetery, Rayville Road, Otisfield. Pastor Lloyd Waterhouse officiated and the eulogy was given by Bob Spencer. Contributions may be made in his name, to the Oxford/Otisfield Rescue, c/o Otisfield Town Office, Otisfield, ME 04270. Arrangements were by Hall Funeral Home, Casco.
