Dora E. Gammon

Dora E. Gammon, 89, of the Gammon Road, Hartford, widow of Carl Gammon, died Tuesday afternoon, April 28, 1998, at Stephens Memorial Hospital, where she had been a patient for several days.

Mrs. Gammon was born in Turner, the daughter of the late Clifford and Sadie (Holland) Starbird, on June 9, 1908. She attended Turner schools.

Mrs. Gammon married Carl Gammon on Feb. 21, 1925, and he pre-deceased her in 1980.

A resident of Hartford practically all her life, she and her husband operated a beef cattle operation. Everyone on the farm had a job, and Mrs. Gammon's job was hay mowing, which she really enjoyed. Mrs. Gammon enjoyed knitting and crocheting, and in her later years she made and gave away many afghans. She also was a bird enthusiast, enjoying feeding and watching the wild birds around her home. She was devoted to her two dogs, Dash and Tammy, and especially enjoyed spending time with her great-grandchildren.

She is survived by two daughters, Joyce McNeil, of Sumner and Rosalie Moulton, of Norway; two grandsons, Alan and Dennis McNeil, of Hartford, whom she and her husband raised from infancy, a niece, Thurlie Fish, as well as five other grandchildren, and three nephews.

Friends may call at the Andrews Funeral Home, Buckfield, Friday evening from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. with Interment in the Buckfield/Damon Cemetery, Buckfield.

Norman H. Harvey

RUMFORD - Norman H. Harvey, 88, died Tuesday, June 20, 2000 at the Rumford Hospital, Rumford, Maine.

A resident of the area most of his life, he resided on Plymouth Avenue, Rumford.

He was born in Rumford on July 9, 1911, the son of Morton and Elizabeth (Hinkley) Harvey, and graduated from Stephens High School in Rumford Class of 1929.

Ever since high school he was a musician and singer, and well known for his yodeling and ability to play seven instruments including, violin, banjo, ukulele, guitar, harmonica, mandolin and the banjo-mandolin.

He had been a part of the Silver Slipper's Band which was very active in the Greater Rumford area in the late 1920s.

Mr. Harvey had worked for Farly Construction of Albany, New York and West Yard of Portland and then as an electrician at the Boise Cascade Paper Co. in Rumford for over 32 years until retirement in 1976.

In the early 1950s he served as a volunteer fireman with the Rumford Fire Department; was a member of the Boise Cascade Paper Co. 25 Year Club, and was a member of the I.B.E.W. Electrical Workers Union.

He was married in Rumford, Maine on June 5, 1948, to Pearl E. Stowe who died in Rumford on Dec. 10, 1989.

Survivors include three daughters, Sally Gay of South Paris, Joyce Libby Hartman of Rumford, and Nancy Harvey of Clinton, MA; two sons, Richard Harvey of South Paris, and Brian Harvey and his wife Suzanne of Rumford; 10 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by a daughter, Mrs Gail Smith and two sisters, Mrs Ruth Albert and Mrs Pearl Taylor.

Funeral services were conducted on Friday, June 23, 2000 at the Meader & Son Funeral Home, Rumford.

Officiating was Rev. Frank Haines, pastor of the Rumford United Methodist Church, Rumford, Maine.

Music selections included The Old Rugged Cross and In The Garden.

Committal services were conducted by Rev. Haines and a special song Flying Free was presented on the flute by Mr Harvey's granddaughter, Navana Routhier.

Pall bearers were Brian Harvey, Richard Harvey, Richard Routhier, Norman Young Jr., Stuart Smith and Joseph Sullivan.

Donations may be made in his memory to Androscoggin Home Health Services, P.O. Box M., Rumford, ME 04276.

Barbara Doe Thurber

SOUTH PARIS - Barbara Doe Thurber, 88, died June 26, 2000, at Market Square Health Care Center in South Paris. She had been a resident there for the past six months.

She was the daughter of Willis Hillman and Florence Mabel (Merrill) Doe and was born in Medford, MA. She was educated in Medford schools, graduating from Medford High School and Burdett Business College.

On March 26, 1932, in Medford, she married Jesse Wyman Thurber and they lived in Medford until purchasing property in Poland, ME, and moving there in 1948. They remained on that property until November, 1999.

Mrs. Thurber loved music. She sang and played the piano and was a choir director at the Pleasant St. Baptist Church in Mechanic Falls for a number of years in the 1950s and 1960s. She enjoyed reading and doing crossword puzzles, loved cats and shared her home with many of them over the years and enjoyed traveling throughout the U.S. and Canada and to several European countries, usually in the company of her daughter.

She was interested in genealogy and belonged to a number of organizations, including the Maine Old cemetery Association, the Maine Historical Piscataqua Pioneers and the Sons and Daughters of the First Settlers of Newbury, MA. She researched for many years working on an update of a Doe genealogy that had been published in 1918 and also worked with a cousin on a Smith Genealogy.

She is survived by her husband, Jesse W. Thurber, of Windham; sons, Willis M. Thurber, of Jacksonville, FL, and Arthur W. Thurber, of Bennington, NH; daughter, Jeanne B. Thurber of Windham; eight grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Her only brother, Robert E. Doe, died May 29, 1999.

There will be no visiting hours and no funeral service. A graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m.on Saturday, July 1, in Riverside Cemetery, Cornish, ME.

Eleanor Alexander (Smith) Morris

ZEPHYR HILLS, FL - Eleanor Alexander (Smith) Morris, 95, of Zephyr Hills, FL, died June 17, 2000 at Westbrooke Manor.

A native of Norway, she moved to Zephyr Hills in 1960. She was a homemaker and a Protestant. She was also a school teacher in Norway.

She is survived by a step-daughter, Dora McClellan, and a step-son, Ed McClellan, both of Zephyr Hills, FL.

Barbara E. Downing

SOUTH PARIS - Barbara E. Downing, 83, of South Paris died at her home, Wednesday, June 21, 2000.

She was born in Harrison on March 9, 1917, the daughter of Albert C. and Bertha Miller Davis.

She was educated in South Paris schools.

She had worked for many years as a court reporter in various states, including Maine.

She had also been a court reporter during Senate hearings in Washington, D.C.

She married Richard V. Downing on January 19, 1951; he died February 9, 1992. She liked music and played piano in a band.

She enjoyed taking care of people. Her family always came first.

She is survived by a sister, Lucille Davis Leach of Knoxville, TN, a brother, Gordon Thomas Davis of Berlin, MD and several nieces and nephews, Cameron A. Turner, K. Arnold Turner, David A. Leach, Christine Leach, Carol Anne Schurr, Glenn T. Davis, Kenneth A. Davis, John B. Davis, Sandra D. Kennaugh and Sheldon E. Davis.

She was predeceased by three brothers, Ralph Davis, Kenneth Davis and George E. Davis, and two sisters, Christine Davis and Marilyn Turner Dow.

Graveside services were held on Sunday, June 25, 2000 at the Elm Vale cemetery in South Waterford.

Donations may be sent to the Arthritis Foundation, 930 Brighton Avenue, Portland, ME 04102.

Arrangements were under the direction of Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, 230 Main St., Norway.

Miriam Mayblom

HYANNIS, MA - Miriam Mayblom, 88 of Hyannis, who was a minister's wife formerly of Oxford Miriam Mayblom, 88, died Sunday, June 18, 2000, at Cape Cod Hospital.

She was the wife of the late Felix R. Mayblom and the mother of the late Judith M. Mayblom.

Born in Finland, Mrs. Mayblom was educated there and in the United States, coming here with her parents when she was nine.

She was a graduate of Quincy High School and studied at Chandler Secretarial School, and took voice lessons until her marriage in 1935.

The Maybloms relocated to the state of Washington, where they lived for three years and served several parishes.

In 1938, she and her husband moved to West Paris, Maine, where they served a Finnish Congregational Church for about 35 years.

She moved to Oxford in 1972 and to Hyannis in 1993.

Mrs. Mayblom had a beautiful soprano voice and sang at countless occasions. She taught voice and was choir director and otherwise active in church work.

A charismatic Christian, Mrs. Mayblom had a lived-out faith.

She loved entertaining, and her home was busy in summer with guests from Finland and the mission fields.

She enjoyed cooking, needlepoint , Scrabble and mystery novels.

She was an opera buff and loved to attend the performances of the Metropolitan Opera of New York when they came to Boston on tour. For decades, she was an avid listener to the Saturday Met broadcasts on radio.

Surviving are two brothers, Varma Sundelin of West Barnstable, and Joel Sundelin of Harwich; a nephew, Mark Sundelin of Hyannis, who was caregiver for her; and several other nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held Thursday at Christ Chapel, Centerville, MA followed by a reception in the fellowship hall.

Memorial donations may be made to Joslin Diabetes Center, Development Office, 1 Joslin Place, Boston, MA 02215.

Mable S. Ramsdell

SOUTH PARIS - Mable S. Ramsdell, 84, of Norway died Friday, June 23, 2000 at the Market Square Health Care Center where she had been a resident since August 1999.

She was born in Berwick, PA,on August 30, 1915, the daughter of Albert A. and Gertrude M. Branning Spohrer. She was raised and educated in Berwick, PA.

She most recently worked at the Raymond Funeral Homes in Bridgton and South Paris.

She enjoyed square dancing and was President of the Western Square Dancing Club in Orlando, FL.

Friends will remember her for the beautiful items she made. At one time she owned her own craft store.

Survivors include a stepson, Rodney Wade of Norway; two sisters, Thelma Haskell of Broken Bow, OK, and Winifred Adams of Berwick, PA; a sister-in-law, Ann Spohrer of Watertown, CT; five grandchildren and five great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews including Winifred Spohrer Mott of Paris.

Mrs. Ramsdell was predeceased by three brothers, Albert E., Clyde R. and Harry S. Spohrer, Sr. and three husbands, Eugene Bullis, Merle Wade, Sr. and L. Doug Ramsdell.

Family and friends attended funeral services Tuesday at the Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, South Paris with Interment in Norway Pine Grove Cemetery, South Paris.

Those who wish may make memorial gifts in her memory to the Salvation Army, Park Street, Lewiston or the United Valley Chapter, American Red Cross, Auburn, ME.
