Leatrice E. Eastman

BRIDGTON - Leatrice E. Eastman, 73, of Bridgton, died in the Bridgton Hospital on Saturday, June 24.

Mrs. Eastman was born July 19, 1926 in Norway, the daughter of the late Alfred and Geneivia (North) Tyler.

She graduated from Norway High School in 1942. Mrs. Eastman worked for the Highland Golf Course, the Dress Shop in Bridgton, Pleasant Mt., and the Pleasant Mt. Moc-Co. for many years.

She married Carlton Eastman, who predeceased her.

Mrs. Eastman was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in St. Cloud, FL and enjoyed the outdoors, gardening, fishing, golfing, boating, knitting, and doing charity and fund raising work for the American Legion.

Surviving is a daughter Carlene Eastman of Bridgton; a granddaughter Stacy Perry of Bridgton; a grandson Myron Chaplin of Cornwall, NY; and two great-grandchildren, Nicole and Nathan Perry.

A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, July 1, at 2 p.m. in Carlene's home on Portland Street in Bridgton. Arrangements are under the care of the Raymond-Wentworth Funeral Home, Bridgton.

Mary E. Butterfield

PORTLAND - Mary E. Butterfield, 90, of Westbrook, died Saturday, July 29, at Mercy Hospital in Portland.

She was born in Bridgton on December 4, 1909, the daughter of Freeman and Edna Sargent Johnson. She was educated in Bridgton schools and was employed at S.D. Warren in Westbrook for 28 years.

Mrs. Butterfield married Raymond C. Butterfield on June 6, 1925, and he died on December 16, 1978.

Mrs. Butterfield enjoyed playing beano and other card games with her friends, and she was a big Red Sox and Celtics fan. She loved attending and watching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren's sporting events.

She is survived by two sons, Donald P. Butterfield and Phillip E. Butterfield, both of Gorham; three sisters, Doris Sanborn of Baldwin, Phyllis Foster of Naples, and Dorothy Pelliter of Buxton; 21 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren; also many nieces and nephews. Mrs. Butterfield was predeceased by three daughters, Lillian E. Nelson, Helen Letarte, and Margaret Graffam; a son, Raymond C. Butterfield Jr; two sisters, Elsie Locke and Martha Parson; and one brother, Theodore Johnson.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, August 4, at the South Bridgton Cemetery.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Raymond-Wentworth Funeral Home in Bridgton.

Ora C. Trevorrow

AUBURN - Ora C. Trevorrow, 83, of Maple Street, Monmouth, died early Friday morning, July 28, at Clover Health Care in Auburn, where she had been a resident since January.

The daughter of the late William and Gerda (Strom) Costello, Mrs. Trevorrow was born on June 28, 1917 in Deep River, CT where she attended local schools.

She was the widow of Reverend Fred Trevorrow whom she married on June 3, 1944 in Charlotte, NC. He passed away in 1982.

Mrs. Trevorrow is well-remembered from the years that her husband was pastor of Baptist churches in Connecticut, including their many years at Stepney Baptist Church in Monroe, CT. She was a member of the United Church of Monmouth and loved reading.

She took special pride in her two grandchildren, Gabriel and Anna Trevorrow.

In addition to her grandchildren, she is survived by her two sons, Todd Trevorrow of Concord, NH and Otisfield and Jay and his wife Nancy of Monmouth.

She was preceded in death by a brother Lawrence Costello and a sister Margaret Strom Fredericks.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. In her memory, contributions may be made to Cumstom Public Library, P.O. Box 239, Monmouth, ME 04259. Arrangements are under the care of Bragdon-Finley Funeral Home in Monmouth.

Mary E. Mills

NORWAY- Mary E. Mills, 63, of Norway died Tuesday July 25, 2000 at the Norway Rehabilitation and Living Center.

She was born in Albany on April 12, 1937, the daughter of Verne and Ethel Grover Mills. She attended schools in Bethel.

Miss Mills belonged to the United Methodist Church in Bolsters Mills. She was a long-term member of the Grange. She had joined the Round Mountain Grange in the early fifties, later the Crooked River, Pomona, and state granges.

After working on her Aunt Amy's Chicken Farm, Mary worked for 18 years at the Autumn Years Nursing Home in Bolsters Mills. Upon its closure, she took care of a lady at Sebago Lake for a few years.

She then retired and made her home with her brother, Donald and his wife Marolyn Mills in North Norway for the next five years. She has been a resident of Norway Rehabilitation and Living Center since May of 1999.

Mary enjoyed traveling, crossword puzzles, and knitting. She went on several tours of the Eastern part of this country and Canada. She also spent a long vacation in Spain. She made lots of afghans and latch hook rugs which she gave to friends and family. Mary's big love was for animals and people. There was not a dog or cat that did not take to her. Her sunny disposition and positive attitude won the admiration of those around her.

Mary is survived by her brother, Donald and wife Marolyn of North Norway; a sister, Carolyn Colby of West Greenwood; three nephews Ralph Mills of Clochester, VT, Carl and his wife Jaime Colby and Brian Colby all of West Greenwood; two nieces, Marcia and husband Jon Smith of Presque Isle and Carolyn and husband Mike Brodgon and their children of Vienna, GA; a sister-in-law, Lorraine Larson of Locke Mills; two step nephews, Eddy Newell and wife Laurie and children of North Norway and Teddy Newell of Oxford; a step niece, Tanya Newell and sons of South Bridgton, many cousins and a very special great nephew, Kyle Colby.

She was predeceased by her brother John.

Graveside services were held Saturday, July 29 in the Pine Grove cemetery in West Bethel.

Donations in Mary's memory can be made to the Norway Rehabilitation Center's patient activity fund.

Arrangements were under the direction of Weston-Chandler Funeral Home 230 Main St. Norway.

Gabrielle Ann Marie Varney-Cothran

PORTLAND - Gabrielle Ann Marie Varney-Cothran, 47 days old, died Saturday July 29, 2000 at the Maine Medical Center in Portland.

Our precious Gabrielle left us after a courageous battle on July 29, much loved by mother Jessica Cothran and father Dwayne Varney, maternal grandparents Tina and Mike Cothran, great great grandmother Cecile Gurney, step-grandfather Scott Sampson, paternal grandparents Chris Lansley and Janice Steffl-Lansley and Evan Varney, great-grandparents Lottie and Everett McKay and Ernest Merchant, Don and Phyllis Cothran, Thomas and Doris Leeman.

In her short life she made many friends and was loved by many, she was beautiful, brave and strong during her short journey here on earth.

Family and friends attended funeral services on Monday, July 31, at the Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, Mechanic Falls with a visitation prior to the service. Interment was in the Riverside cemetery in Oxford.

Verna Bailey Garneau

NORWAY- Verna Bailey Garneau, 78, of Norway died unexpectedly at her home on Wednesday, July 26, 2000.

She was born in Dixville, Quebec, Canada on April 28, 1922, the daughter of Archie and Lizzie Egleston Bailey.

She was employed as a caregiver at the former Andrews Nursing Home, which is now Market Square Health Care Facility and also worked at Cornwall Industries.

She married Johnny Garneau on September 15, 1947; he died on December 4, 1979.

She is survived by a son, Archill "Archie" Garneau of Oxford; two grandsons, John Garneau of Vancouver, WA, and Sean Garneau of Mechanic Falls; two sisters, Eunice Paige of Coaticook Quebec, and Lois Bryant (Arthur) of Austin, Quebec; a sister-in-law, Alice Bailey (and the late Wallace) of Dixville, Quebec and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a sister, Viola Stewart of Danville, VT.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, July 29, at the Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, 230 Main St., Norway. Visitation was prior to the services.

James W. Baggs Sr.

James W. Baggs Sr., 66, Walpole, died July 10 at his home after a brief illness.

He was born in New York City, a son of Richard E. and Lilas Galloway Baggs, and graduated from Temple University High School in Philadelphia and Eastern College in St. David’s, Penn. with a degree in education. Mr. Baggs taught in the Tredyffryn/Easttown School District in Pennsylvania until 1991.

A son, Richard Baggs, died in 1989.

Surviving are his wife Mildred E. Baggs of Walpole; a son, James W. Jr. of Philadelphia; daughters Susan Baggs of Hoboken, NJ, Karen LaCharite of Penobscot, and Nancy Stroud of Kennebunk; sisters, Barbara Gensler of Lebanon, Penn. and Patricia Yellis of Kennebunk; and six grandchildren.

Burial will be private.

Irving Stanley Bailey

Irving Stanley Bailey passed away April 20 in Del Ray Beach, Fla.

Funeral service at 11 a.m., May 11, at the First Baptist Church, Main Street, Waldoboro.

Arrangements are by Hall Funeral Home, Waldoboro.

Adam L. Bailey

BRIDGTON - Adam L. Bailey, age 12, died Tuesday, December 22, at a Bridgton Hospital.

He was born in Bridgton on June 1, 1986, the son of Lisa Cross and Joseph Bailey.

Adam was in the eighth grade at the Lake Region Middle School. Adam enjoyed computers, math and loved all sports. He was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan.

He is survived by his mother and step father, Lisa and Milo Blodgett of Bridgton; his father, Joseph Bailey, of Poland, and one brother, Brian Bailey of Bridgton. He is also survived by his maternal grandparents, Gilbert Sr. and Carolyn Cross of Bridgton and a step grandmother, Dorothy Blodgett of Underhill, VT. Adam was predeceased by a sister, Kami-Sue Cross.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. on December 24, at the Raymond-Wentworth Funeral Home.

Virginia Bailey, mother of James Gillies

Virginia Toole Gillies Bailey, 95, of 25 Thornton Way, formerly of Bath, died February 8 at The Hawthorne House in Freeport.

She was the mother of James Gillies, formerly of Gray and now of Bath.

Mrs. Bailey was born January 16, 1906, in New Haven, Connecticut, the daughter of Edward Aloysius and Marie Russell (Dillon) Toole. She was a graduate of New Haven schools and the Harcum School in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. She attended Barnard College in New York City.

She married James A. Gillies in 1931, and moved to Bath when Mr. Gillies became manager of the Bath Box Company, a family business. Mr. Gillies died in 1963. In 1965, Mrs. Gillies moved from the family home in Bath to South Freeport. For many years she enjoyed the role of house parent in several New England woman's colleges and boarding schools.

In 1980, she married Boyd Langdon Bailey. They resided in South Harpswell until Mr. Bailey's death in 1986.

Mrs. Bailey was a member of the Board of Directors and past president of the Bath Memorial Hospital. She was past president of the Bath Memorial Hospital Auxiliary where serving as an Auxiliary fund-raiser she was instrumental in developing and promoting the popular Bath Ship Plates collection. She was a member of the Board of the Pine Tree Society for Handicapped Children, past president of the Bath Chapter of the Infantile Paralysis Association, and the first President of the Garden Club. She also was a member and past president of the Junior League of Bath. She served as purchasing chair for the Junior League, which equipped the kitchen and nursery of Bath Memorial Hospital. With Mr. Gillies she was a member of the Maine Horse Association of which his father was a founder. Mrs. Bailey was a Friend of Bowdoin College, a life member of the Maine Maritime Museum, and a member of the Portland Museum of Art. She belonged to the Freeport Women's Club, the Harpswell Kings Daughters and both the Bath and the Freeport Historical Societies. She was a volunteer at Mid Coast Hospital for many years and a member os St. Mary's Catholic Church in Bath and the St. Charles Catholic Church in Brunswick.

She is survived by four sons, Bruce James Gillies of Portland, James Archibald Gillies III and his wife Susan of North Bath and formerly of Gray, Edward Dillon Gillies and his wife Paula of Bethel, Gordon Mark Gillies and his wife Mary of Hebron, one daughter Mary Virginia Leonard and her husband Michael of Machias, thirteen grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 P.M., Saturday, February 17, 2001, at Holy Martyrs Catholic Church, Route 88, Falmouth. A reception will follow at Thornton Oaks, 25 Thornton Way, Brunswick. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, Bath, in the spring. In Lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Capital Campaign, Midcoast Chapter, American Red Cross, 9 Bank Street, Brunswick, Maine 04011. Arrangements are by Mayo, Curtis & Hill Funeral Home, 819 High Street, Bath.
