Barry C. Bailey

Barry C. Bailey, 51, of Gray, died January 7 after a long illness.

He was born in Portland, a son of Walter and Barbara Greene Bailey. He attended schools in Bridgton, and graduated from Bridgton Academy.

Mr. Bailey served in the Army for six years, and later in the Air Force.

He was a member of Grace Baptist Church in Portland.

He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Jackie Bailey, of Gray; and two sons, James Scott, of Gray, and David Michael, of South Portland.

A funeral service was held on Tuesday at Grace Baptist Church; burial will be in the spring at Chase Cemetery, in Windham. Arrangements were by Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, Portland.

Ruth E. Baird-Smith
2001-06-07

Ruth E. Baird-Smith, 77, of Dresden, died May 25 at St. Mary's Hospital in Lewiston due to complications of a broken foot.

Born in Hope, she was the eldest daughter of Frank H. Baird Sr. and Ellen M. Bridges-Baird.

Mrs. Baird-Smith worked at the Harding Plant, Eton and Etonic Shoe, Auerbach Shoe and did practical nursing and cooking. She enjoyed her flowers, long car rides and reading.

A daughter, Linda C. Pierpont, died in February of 1998, and her first husband, Charles W. Curtis, died in November of 1997.

Surviving are her husband, Lowell I. Smith of Dresden; one daughter, Sandra E. James of Wiscasset; two sons, Charles L. and Susan Curtis of Bowdoinham, and David V. Curtis and Alice Fraser of Gardiner; three brothers, Frank H. and Geneva Baird Jr. of North Berwick, Edwin W. and Virginia Baird of South Berwick, and Robert H. and Louise Baird Sr. of Alna; two sisters, Inez V. and Dick Parsons of Oxford, and Judy A. Greenleaf of Alna; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and great-nieces and great-nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 9 at Grace Lawn Memorial Park, 980 Turner Street in Auburn.

Olive S. Baker

Olive S. Baker, 85, of Bremen died March 29 at Cove's Edge Nursing Home in Damariscotta after along battle with Alzheimer's disease.

A daughter of Ralph and Madge (Stone) Stahl, she was born in Waldoboro September 25, 1915. She graduated from Brunswick High School in the Class of 1933, and began her career working for the Maine Department of Motor Vehicles. Following her marriage to Charles W. C. Sherman, she concentrated on caring for her husband and three children.

Following her husband's sudden death in 1959, she re-entered the work force, first at the Damariscotta Region Information Bureau, later serving as its executive secretary. She also worked at the Center Lovell Inn and the Black Point Inn, both in Maine, and in 1972, after moving to Arizona, she worked for the Wig Wam Resort in Litchfield Park for ten years.

Following her retirement in 1982, she and her second husband, Milo Baker, returned to this area. She was a communicant at St. Andrew's Church in Newcastle, and served the church in several capacities until her illness.

Surviving are her husband, now a resident at the Maine Veterans Home in Augusta; three children, Dawn Sherman Gilbert of Boothbay, Charles Scott Sherman of Rockwell, NC. and Robert S. .Sherman of Yarmouth; a stepson, Peter Sherman; a sister, Fran Nason of Bremen; eight grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and several step-great-grandchildren.

A funeral service was held Wednesday, April 4, at St. Andrew's Church, Newcastle, with Rev. Stephen White and Rev. John Ineson co-officiating. She will be laid to rest at the Hillside Cemetery, Damariscotta, in the spring. Arrangements are by Strong Funeral Home, Damariscotta. Donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association of Maine, 163 Lancaster Street, Portland, ME 04101 in her memory.

Charles Balant
2000-11-09

Charles Balant, 81, Newcastle, died Oct. 23 in his home in Newcastle.

He was born Sept. 14, 1919 in Mons, Belgium. He became a US citizen in 1951.

A research scientist, he held degrees from the Swiss Federal Polytechnical Institute and the University of Pennsylvania. Until his retirement in 1983, he worked in the pharmaceutical industry, first at Smith Kline Beecham and later at Merck and Co., where he was Director of Regulatory Affairs.

He loved his adopted country and had many interests including music, history, antiques, hunting, fishing, working in his orchard, riding and painting. Most of all he loved his family: his wife of 51 years, Doris, and his children, Luc Balant of Geneva, Switzerland, Nicole Balant of West Sand Lake, NY, Mark Balant of Honeybrook, Penn., Anne Balant Campbell of Carmel, NY, Claudia Balant of Doylestown, Penn. and his six grandchildren.

Barbara H. Baldwin
2001-04-19

Barbara H. Baldwin, 77, wife of Earl H. Baldwin, died at home in Orrington, April 14. She was born Feb. 18, 1924, in Nobleboro, the daughter of Chester D. Hall and Marion (Vaughan) Hall.

After graduating in 1941 from Lincoln Academy in Newcastle, she worked as a secretary. Her positions were at the Bristol yacht Building Co., So. Bristol; the Navy Supervisor of Shipbuilding at Bath Iron Works; and the Camp Claiborne, Louisiana, Base Hospital. She was a full partner in Baldwin Boat Co. from 1966 to the present. Barbara and Earl married on Independence Day, 1943 at her mother’s home in Nobleboro, and raised their family in Orrington since 1952. She spent many years involved in her church, Sunday and Bible schools; and ejoyed sewing, quilting, crocheting, counted cross-stitch, bird watching, reading, gardening, and cooking for her family and friends.

In addition to her husband of Orrington, she is survived by a son, Ralph and his wife, Carole Baldwin of Skowhegan; two daughters, Martha and her husband, Edward Breau of Holden and Ellen Campbell of Holden; nine grandchildren, ten great grandchildren; two sisters, Dorothy and her husband, L. John Castner of So. Berwick and Ada and her husband, Clyde Duncan of Nobleboro; nieces and nephews.

Funeral service 10 a.m. at the Orrington Center Church, Orrington. Interment will be at the Hall Descendants cemetery in Nobleboro. Gifts in her memory may be made to the Orrington Center Church, care of Carolyn Howard, 605 Center Drive, Orrington, 04474; or to her family’s cemetery association, hall Descendants, Inc., 783 Eastern Avenue, Holden, 04429.

John M. Baldwin

John Maddocks Baldwin, 64, died suddenly on Tuesday, April 10, 2001 when his plane crashed soon after takeoff from refueling in Claxton, Georgia. He was a long-time summer resident of the Boothbay region, most recently on Capitol Island. He also resided in New York City and on Woodridge Lake in Goshen, Connecticut.

The son of Gwendolyn Maddocks Baldwin and the late Charles F. Baldwin Jr., Mr. Baldwin was born in Worcester, Mass. on July 15, 1936, living there until the family moved to Darien, Conn. in 1951.

He graduated from the Middlesex School in Concord, Mass. in 1954, where he was captain of the football team. After graduating from Harvard College in 1958, his early career was in New York City with Chemical Bank and TIAA. In 1986, he helped to form Kenner & Company, Inc., a leveraged buyout firm.

Mr. Baldwin had a real passion for flying and had accumulated eleven aircraft and an interest in Meriden Markam Airport. He flew in many vintage planes in Texas, Florida, Georgia and the Ukraine, in formation flying, arobatics and dogfights.

He was an all around athlete. He excelled at tennis, golf, running, skiing and biking. He sailed with his family from many ports, from his house in Boothbay Harbor as well as the Caribbean and Tahiti.

Mr. Baldwin was a philanthropist who also played an active role as head trustee of a family foundation established by his aunt and uncle.

Survivors include his wife, Ellen Brooks Baldwin; two sons, Jonathan of Goshen, Conn., and Alan, a senior at Connecticut College; one sister, Beverly Baldwin McCoid of Charlottesville, Virginia and McKown Point; one brother, Charles F. Baldwin III of Wellesley, Mass. and McKown Point; and many nieces and nephews. Mr. Baldwin was a direct descendent of two early Boothbay families through his grandparents, Edith Kenniston Maddocks and John A. Maddocks.

A service to celebrate his life was held at the Frank E. Campbell Chapel in New York City on Tuesday, April 17. A memorial service on Capitol Island will be held this summer.

Rita E. Barter

Rita E. Barter, 76, of West Boothbay Harbor, died Wednesday, January 10 at her home.

She was born March 21, 1924 in Augusta, the daughter of Philip and Lillian White McLaughlin. She grew up in Augusta and graduated from Cony High School in the class of 1942.

She married Richard A. Barter in 1946.

She worked at the Hallowell Shoe Company for a brief period. She was a homemaker who loved being at home and with her family. She took in many children over the years to help them and bring them up. She also helped raise many of her grandchildren. She was an excellent cook.

Mrs. Barter was predeceased by her husband, who died in 1996, and also by a son, Jeffrey R. Barter, who died in 1994.

She is survived by a daughter Martha and her husband, Charles (Chip) Haggett, of West Boothbay Harbor; three grandchildren, Rae L. Barter of Boothbay Harbor, Heather M. Haggett and Richard (Ben) Haggett, both of West Boothbay Harbor; one daughter-in-law, Nancy Barter, of Boothbay Harbor; one sister, Barbara Bunnell, of Augusta; one brother, Paul McLaughlin, of Winthrop; two aunts, Marion Gracian of Gardiner and Edith Orff of Waldoboro; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

The funeral service was held Saturday, January 13 at 1 p.m. at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Route 27, Boothbay. Al Roberts officiated. Burial followed in the Evergreen cemetery in Boothbay.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Andrews Home Health, 3 St. Andrews Lane, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538.

Arrangements are by Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, 975 Wiscasset Road, PO Box 576, Boothbay, ME 04537.

Evelyn N. Barter

Evelyn N. Barter, 74, of Boothbay Harbor, died Monday, December 25 at St. Andrews Hospital.

Ms. Barter attended local schools and worked at St. Andrews Hospital in various capacities for many years. She loved her flowers and plants. Her family was the very focus of her life. She instilled in them values that govern all of their lives.

Survivors include two brothers, Wallace Barter Jr. of Wiscasset and William P. Barter of California; one sister, Janice Cusumano; several nieces, nephews and many cousins.

She was predeceased by two sisters, Dorothy Rand and Barbara Smith.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Senior Spectrum, P.O. Box 759, Damariscotta, ME 04543.

Visiting hours were held Wednesday, December 27 at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, December 28 at 2 p.m. at Evergreen cemetery in Boothbay.

Arrangements are by Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay.

Marjorie G. Barter
2001-05-31

Marjorie Gray Barter of Newagen died on May 25, 2001 at St. Andrews Hospital.

Born on December 12, 1919, she was the daughter of Ralph E. and Edith Snowman Gray and was a life-long resident of Newagen. She loved her home in Newagen and said she never wanted to be where she couldn't hear the sound of Cuckolds Light.

On June 11, 1937 she graduated from Boothbay High, and on May 10, 1946 she married Donald Barter. The Rev. J. D. Payson officiated at their marriage as he had done at the marriage of her parents.

Mrs. Barter was the librarian at the Southport Memorial Library at Newagen from 1960 to 1980. She was an avid reader and was especially interested in biographies. She was very interested in writing and wrote short stories about Newagen in the 1800s. Her work may be read at the Newagen Memorial Library under the title of "I Remember" written by Marjorie A. Barter, daughter of Newagen.

One of the happiest days of her life was being accepted as a foster parent for the Foster Child Program of the State of Maine and receiving a daughter to love and nurture. She enjoyed children, and taking walks along the west shore of Newagen.

Another of the happiest times of her life was assisting in the delivery of a litter of Collie puppies and raising them. She was a one-time member of the Collie Club of Maine.

She had a very caring disposition and was especially thoughtful with Anniversary and Birthday cards.

Survivors include her husband of 54 years, Donald F. Barter of Newagen; one daughter Shirley and her husband Daniel Guimond of Guinea, West Africa; two grand- children, Joseph Guimond of Guinea, West Africa, Caleb Guimond of Guinea, West Africa; one niece, Elisa Shaw of Newagen; two grandnephews, Robert and Benjamin Shaw of Newagen; one cousin, John and his wife Lorraine Gray of Newagen.

A graveside service was held on Tuesday, May 29, 2001 at the Spruce Lawn cemetery in Southport. The Rev. Daniel McNutt and Rev. Daniel Guimond officiated.

Douglas R. Barter
1999-06-03

Douglas R. Barter, 69, Waldoboro, died June 1 in Damariscotta after a courageous battle with caner.

Douglas was born May 17, 1930 in Waldoboro, the son of Cecil and Ruby Achorn Barter. Douglas attended schools in Waldoboro and spent his younger years working at the Marlin & Rockwell Ball Bering Plant in Plansville, Conn. In 1958 he returned to Waldoboro and married Rosemary Ilves. Douglas also worked for H.C. Ralph in the reconditioning shop for several year and then started his own shop, Barter Reconditioning Shop.

He enjoyed stock car racing and was a co-owner of race car #7, which Teddy Palino drove. He enjoyed boating, dancing, his cottage at South Pond and especially enjoyed his grandchildren, family and his dog "Misty".

Douglas is survived by his wife of 40 years, Rosemary Ilves Barter of Waldoboro; daughters, Rosa Lee Philbrook of Port Clyde, Lorrie D. Staples of Thomaston,; son, Douglas C. Barter of Waldoboro; sisters, Laura B. Ralph and Marlene (Mickey) Ilves of Waldoboro; bother, Gary C. Barter of Waldoboro; grandchildren, Clayton J. and Patrick M. Philbrook of Cushing, Chelsea M. Culver of Port Clyde and Brandon M. Staples of Thomaston; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visiting hours are from 6-8 p.m., Thur., June 3 at Hall Funeral Home, 949 Main St., Waldoboro.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Fri., June 4, at Shuman cemetery in Waldoboro. The Rev. Robert Dorr will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, Maine Division, 52 Federal St., Brunswick 04011.

Arrangements are under the direction of Hall Funeral Home, 949 Main St., Waldoboro.
