Amesy Benjamin
2001-04-24

Amesy Benjamin, 79, of Thomaston, and Sun City Center, Fla., passed away March 17, in Sun City Center, Fla.

Amesy was born Nov. 7, 1921 in Newburg, New York the son of Amesy and Clara Thomas Benjamin.

He grew up and attended schools in Newburg, N.Y. Amesy was a five-year Army Veteran of World War II. He worked for the Dupont Company in Newburg, N.Y. as an engineer. After retirement he enjoyed the outdoors, gardening and fishing. He also enjoyed cruises to various ports of call including the Panama Canal, Bermuda and the Caribbean.

He had resided in Gross Neck and Thomaston, and for the last few eyras he and his wife Alice have been residents of Sun City, Florida.

He is predeceased by a stepdaughter, Marion Morse.

He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Alice Morse Benjamin of Sun City Fla.; stepdaughter, Alice Comeau of Valrico, Fla.; Jane Badershall of Venice, Fla. and Northport, five step children, seven step grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside service at 1 p.m. May 26, at the German cemetery in Waldoboro. The Rev. Robert Dorr will officiate. Arrangements are by the Hall Funeral Home, Waldoboro.

Claudia J. Benner

Claudia J. Benner, 46, of Wiscasset, died Friday morning, May 18, at Midcoast Hospital after a long battle with cancer.

A daughter of Burton and Leatrice (Payne) Blackman, she was born December 23, 1954, in Boothbay Harbor.

Mrs. Benner was a graduate of Wiscasset Academy in the Class of 1973 and remained a life-long resident. For the last several years, she was employed at the Lincoln County News, both as an office assistant and author of a weekly article on the Wiscasset Speedway. Stock car racing was a sport she had loved most of her life. She also loved camping, bluegrass music and most especially her family.

On January 1, 1993 she married Malcolm "Macky" Benner.

Survivors include her husband of Wiscasset; two daughters, Mindy Lea Couillard and her fiancée Miles Frazier of Bath, and Renee Jean Goulette of Wiscasset; two sons, Brock Antoine Couillard and Kyle Joseph Goulette, both of Wiscasset; two stepchildren, Ryan Michael Benner and Lindsay Christine Benner, both of Topsham; four sisters, Naomi Beth Bonang, Debra Ann Andrews and Kathy May Blackman, all of Wiscasset, and Bonnie Lynn Waltz of Newcastle; two brothers, Burton Kenneth Blackman Jr., and Richard Kayser, both of Wiscasset; and her granddaughter, Arianna Linee Frazier.

She was predeceased by her father in 1965 and her mother in 1986.

Visiting hours were Monday, May 21 at the Strong Funeral Home in Damariscotta. The funeral service was held Tuesday, May 22 at the funeral home with Rick Newell and the Rev. Dr. Richard Hall co-officiating. She will be laid to rest, with her parents, at the Greenlawn cemetery in Wiscasset.

Clarence A. Benner
2001-04-19

Clarence A. Benner, 74, Nobleboro, died at home on April 12, after a long illness. A son of Austin A. Benner, Sr., and Margaret (Fuller) Benner, he was born in Bristol April 24, 1926.

He attended Bristol Schools and served in the U.S. Army during WW II. After attending welding school in Bath, he worked for a short time at Bath Iron Works and later the Harvey Gamage Shipyard in South Bristol. Continuing his career, he worked for several years as a foreman for the State Highway Dept., in Lincoln County, followed by his foreman position at Bridge Construction Co., working for five years at the University of Maine.

For 22 years, Clarence was a foreman at H.E. Sergeant Co., in Stillwater where he traveled throughout northern New England from them. He always said it was “the best company to work for in the country.’’ He retired in 1988 due to ill health. During retirement, he continued to work with steel as a hobby, building many interesting items. He loved gardening and maintaining a large lawn.

In April of 1944 he married Carolyn M. Clifford of South Bristol. She passed away in October of 1994. He leaves three sons, Clarence S. Benner of Benton, Merle F. Benner of Richmond, Stephen A. Benner, serving in the U.S. Air Force in Germany, a daughter, Sharon Kelley of Houlton. He also leaves two brothers, James Carroll Benner of New Harbor, Austin A. Benner, Jr., of Bristol, two sisters Betty Benner of Damariscotta, Janice McGuire of New Harbor, ten grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. He also leaves his longtime companion Becky Malone.

Graveside service was held at 11 a.m. April 17 at the Hillside Cemetery, where he was laid to rest, with his wife.

Elva Lee Benner
2000-12-21

Elva Lee Benner, 101, passed away Sun., Dec. 17, at Field Crest Manor in Waldoboro.

Elva was born Sept. 10, 1899 in Friendship, the daughter of James Franklin and Julia Ann Carter Winchenbach. She was the oldest of four girls.

She was a native of Friendship attending school in a one-room schoolhouse in Lawry for a little over eight years. At that time, it was a very rare for anyone to go beyond the 8 grade.

At 14, Elva got a work permit and went to work at Ellis Lawry Clam Factory at Forest Lake and later at Brunham & Morrill in Friendship Harbor, taking time off to raise her children.

During the Great Depression, she, her mother and three sisters picked crabmeat for her father who sold both clams and crabmeat.

She married Perley E. Benner on July 12, 1920 at the age of 21. She lived most of her life in Friendship excluding three years when she lived in Damariscotta and in south Waldoboro. For a few years she drove a car, but when her husband passed away in 1960, she had to sell the car because of hard times. After Perley’s death, she supported herself by selling Avon Products walking door to door for 15 to 20 years. She was one of their top salespeople, earning many awards. She also helped support herself by housekeeping for a very dear friend until she reached the age of 62 and became eligible for Social Security. At that time, she gave up selling Avon but continued housekeeping.

She was a member of the Acorn Grange for more than 50 years, the Friendship United Methodist Church for more than 65 years and attended almost every Sunday until she was no longer able to climb the stairs, she was a veteran member of the Friendship Ambulance Fire Auxiliary Department; contributing many hours working on the Annual Rummage sale so they could purchase another ambulance and for it’s upkeep. She belonged to the Pythian Sisters Order in Friendship for many years until they folded, and she was a grange correspondent for the Courier Gazette.

In March 1995, she was awarded the Boston Post Gold Cane from the Town of Friendship, as she was their oldest resident.

Her hobbies included stamp collecting and braiding rugs for a firm in Portland, as well as braiding rugs to sell from her home and braiding them for each of her ten grandchildren. She loved to crochet and crocheted numerous things over the years.

She is predeceased by her husband, Perley (1960) Son, Norman Benner (1995), Sisters, Edith Havener, Leola Benner and Irma Benner, great grandson, Richard Chapman (1992).

She is survived by her daughter, Grace Delano of Friendship, 10 grandchildren, 35 great grandchildren, 50 great-great grandchildren, and one great-great-great granddaughter and 3 step grandchildren.

Visiting hours 608 p.m., Dec. 21, at the Friendship United Methodist Church in Friendship. The Rev. Daniel Ames will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Elva’s memory may be made to the Friendship United Methodist Church, Friendship, 04547 or to the Women’s Auxiliary Fire Dept., Friendship, 04547.

Burial will follow in the Sweetland cemetery in Waldoboro.

Arrangements are by Hall Funeral Home, Waldoboro.

Georgia C. Benner

Georgia C. Benner, 68, of Bristol, died Wednesday, November 22 at the home of her daughter in New Harbor after a six-week illness.

Born in Thomaston, she was a daughter of Francis and Catherine Cushman Ellis.

She married Malcolm R. Benner Sr. and they lived for many years in Bremen, moving to Bristol 12 years ago.

Mrs. Benner enjoyed camping and visited nearly every state. She also did all types of handiwork and had a lifelong interest in bluegrass music.

A grandson died previously.

Surviving are her mother and stepfather,, Catherine and Burton Teele of Port Clyde; four daughters, Donna Leeman of New Harbor, Sarah Jean Little of Bristol and Hazel C. Bowe and Terry Lynn Creamer, both of bath; a son, Malcolm Jr. of Wiscasset; four sisters, Virginia Call, Bridgett Palino and Gladys Teele, all of Florida, and Gertrude Harnish of North Newcastle,; four brothers, Milford and Wesley Ellis, both of Waldoboro, Burton Teele Jr. of Boothbay and Ira Teele of Warren; 18 grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

A funeral service was held Monday, November 27 at Strong Funeral Home in Damariscotta. Burial was in New Harbor Cemetery.

Dorothy G. Benner
2000-11-09

Dorothy G. Benner, 69, Nobleboro, passed away Mon., Oct. 30, at Maine Medical Center, after a long illness.

Dorothy was born March 31, 1931 on Isleboro, the daughter of Fred and Bessie Wyman Grover.

She lived on Isleboro until the age of 12, she then moved to Camden and attended Camden Schools, graduating from Camden High School.

She worked for the May Mary Nursing Home in Camden, the Roseway Restaurant in Waldoboro and at A.S. Benner’s General Store. She married David Benner in 1950 and together they made their home in Nobleboro, raising their four children.

She enjoyed being a homemaker, NASCAR racing, reading and collecting salt and pepper shakers. She was a Nobleboro Grange Member for over 30 years.

She is predeceased by her brothers, Eben and Gene Grover, sister, Carmine MacLeod.

She is survived by her husband of 50 years, David A. Benner of Nobleboro, sons, David A. Benner, Jr., and Wayne K. Benner of Nobleboro, Peter J. Benner and wife Danica of Damariscotta, daughter, Amy L. Fossett and husband, Edward A. of New Harbor, sisters, Beatrice Knight of Greenville, Isabelle Blades of Camden, brother, Melvin Grover of Bangor, granddaughter, Michelle Prock of Waldoboro.

Memorial service 2 p.m., Fri., Nov. 3 at the Hall Funeral Home - 949 Main St., Waldoboro with Rev. Robert Dorr officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dot’s memory to the Arthritis Foundation, North New England Chapter-Maine Region, 201 Main St., Suite #6, Westbrook.

Arrangements are under the direction of Hall Funeral Home, Waldoboro.

Beverly A. Benner
2000-09-21

Beverly A. Benner, 77, Waldoboro, died Mon., Sept. 18, at Fieldcrest Manor in Waldoboro.

Beverly was born Sept. 27, 1922 in Waldoboro, the daughter of Bernard and Jessie Benner.

For many years, she was a nurse in Waldoboro.

She is survived by her sister, Marcia Rider and her husband John of Waldoboro.

Graveside service held at 11 a.m., Wed., Sept 20, at the Comery cemetery in Waldoboro.

The Rev. Robert Dorr will officiate.

Arrangements are by Hall Funeral Home, Waldoboro.

Daniel W. Bennett II
2000-05-18

EAST SUMNER - Spring committal services for Daniel W. Bennett II, 32, of Sumner will be held Saturday, May 20, at 11 a.m. in the Elmwood cemetery in East Sumner. Rev. Scott Jones will be officiating; arrangements under the direction of Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, S.Paris.

Marjorie V. Bernier

Marjorie V. Bernier, 90, of Augusta, died Sunday, January 21, 2001 at Maine General Rehabilitation & Nursing Care Center after a brief illness.

Born in East Boothbay on January 9, 1911, she was the daughter of Simeon and Julia (Dodge) Van Horn.

Mrs. Bernier graduated from Lincoln Academy in 1928 and earned her bachelors degree in math from Colby College where she was a member of the Delta Delta Delta Sorority.

She had been employed by the State of Maine Bureau of Taxation's Inheritance Tax Division for 15 years. She had previously been employed by the City of Augusta as a substitute teacher for several years and was a teacher at St. Mary's School for a short time.

Mrs. Bernier was a communicant of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, was a member of the Parent Teachers Association and St. Mary's Literary Guild. She was chosen Augusta Mother of the Year in 1969 by the Augusta Jay- cees and was also a Maine Merit Mother in that same year. She was Past Treasurer of the Maine Mothers Association.

In addition to enjoying her family, she was interested in gardening, the weather, the night sky and crossword puzzles.

Mrs. Bernier was pre-deceased by her husband of 41years, John R. Bernier; a son, John P. Bernier; a brother, Dwight Van Horn and two sisters, Nina Van Horn and Alberta Shute.

Survivors include two sons, Robert E. Bernier and his wife Joyce of Manchester and William R. Bernier of Bradley; three daughters, Julie Bernier of Augusta, Elaine Morin and her husband Michel of Manchester and Elise Patenaude and her husband Tom of Sidney; 12 grandchildren, Matthew Bernier, Kelsey Ullman, Stephanie, Jennifer, J. Andrew and Patricia Bernier, Abram, Jared and Adrienne Patenaude and Joshua, Chantal and Jillian Morin; three great-grandchildren, a daugh-ter-in-law, Joanne Bernier of Augusta; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Wednesday, January 24 at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, Augusta. Spring burial will be in the family lot in St. Mary's Cemetery, Pelton Hill, Manchester.
