Florence E. Berry
2000-11-09

WEST PARIS - Florence E. Berry, 93, of West Paris died Monday, October 30, 2000 at Ledgeview Nursing Home.

She was born in Albany on March 19, 1907 the daughter of Bob and Nina Kimball Bradford. She was educated in Harrison schools.

She had been a homemaker all her life and enjoyed her family and sewing.

She is survived by a daughter, Evelyn Clemons of Mechanic Falls; two sons, Alfred Moore of Bridgton and Raymond Pratt of South Paris and a sister, Mildred Williamson of West Paris. She had many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by three husbands, Bob Pratt, Albert Moore and Sidney Berry.

Funeral services were held on Friday, November 3, 2000 at the Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, Norway. Interment was in the Stuart's Corner cemetery in Harrison.

Family and friends attended visiting hours on Thursday evening.

Eunice B. Berry
1999-06-03

BRAINTREE, MA - Eunice B. Berry, 74, of Poland Spring Road, died May 25, in Braintree, MA at the home of her daughter after a short illness.

She was born in West Paris, the daughter of Earl E. Bane and Myrtle Brock Bane. Mrs. Berry was a graduate of South Paris High School.

She was a member of the Webbs Mills Baptist Church, and she enjoyed playing the piano and was a substitute piano player at church.

Mrs. Berry was an avid collector of cookbooks and enjoyed reading and corresponding with friends and relatives.

Her husband, Floyd Berry, died in 1997.

Surviving are her daughter, Sherry Martin Bennett, and her grandson, Chad Joseph Bennett, both of Braintree, MA.

A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. on June 2, at Hall Funeral Home in Casco.

Contributions may be made to the Casco Rescue Unit at P.O. Box 117, Casco, ME 04015 or to Hospice of the South Shore, 100 Bay State Drive, Braintree, MA 02184.

Robert E. Berry
1999-04-30

Robert E. Berry, 65, died April 21 at his home.

He was born in Westbrook, a son of Everett W. and Dorotha L. Smith Berry, and graduated from Pennell Institute in 1952.

Mr. Berry owned Dry Mills Garage during the 1960s. He was an auto mechanic for 33 years at Casco Bay Ford. After his retirement, he became a lobsterman and built a lobster boat with his sons-in-law

He was an avid reader and history buff. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and camping. He always helped his children through life's struggles and worked hard to create a happy home for his wife and children. He was loved by his children's spouses as if he was their own dad.

Surviving are his wife of 46 years, Mary Lockard Berry of Gray; four sons, R. Bruce of New Gloucester, Michael R. of Sabattus, Dennis A. of Gray and Scott D. of Gray; four daughters, Glenice A. Prosser of Cundy's Harbor, Jane D. Sherrer of Newport, N.C., Shirley L. Dempsey of Gray and Carolyn A. Martin of Portland; a brother; Albert E. Berry of New Gloucester; two sisters; Anne E. Bucklin of Windham and Judith I. Huff of Gray; 21 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

George M. Betterley
2001-04-19

George M. Betterley, of Damariscotta, died of prostate cancer at his home, surrounded by his beloved family, on April 12.

He was born in Worcester, Mass., in 1921, graduated from Lafayette College and attended Harvard Business School. He was a Captain in the U.S. Air Force, serving in World War II in the China-India-Burma Theatre and the Korean War.

George had a long and illustrious career as a risk management specialist, consulting with national and international businesses. President of Betterley Consulting Group in Boston, he worked for 50 of the top Fortune 100 Companies. His firm eventually merged into Towers Perrin, where he served as Vice President and Principal until his retirement in 1991. Among various awards bestowed on him was the Risk and Insurance Management Society’s Goodell Award in 1998, the highest recognition in the field.

While in Worcester and Boston he was an active church lay leader and served on the boards of numerous organizations, including 32 years on the Board of Andover Newton Theological School.

He made Damariscotta his home in 1977, after vacationing for many years at the family cottage on Damariscotta Lake. He was on the Board of Round Top Center for the Arts, a Maine Municipal Association Board, the Damariscotta Town Budget Committee and was very actively involved in Miles Health Care. George was currently co-chair, with his wife, of the Miles capital Campaign. He was also previously on the Board of St. Andrews Hospital.

He is survived by his wife Mary; children; Bruce of Tucson, Ariz. Stephen and his wife Laurie of Delmar, NY; Susan Gelinas of Boylston, Mass.; and Jane Palmerino of Worcester, Mass. He leaves seven grandchildren; a brother, Delbert, of Holden, Mass.; and a sister, Lois Bird, of Worcester, Mass.

He was the recipient of the Lincoln County Weekly’s Community Service Award for the year 2000.

A candlelight memorial service Thurs., April 19 at 5 p.m. at the Second Congregational Church, Newcastle. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Miles Memorial Hospital Capital Campaign. Arrangements are under the care of the Strong Funeral Home, 612 Main St., Damariscotta.

Dorothea L. MacMahan Betts
1999-09-30

Dorothea L. MacMahan Betts, 86 of Morristown, Tenn. and formerly of Bath, died Wed. Sept. 29, after a battle with Sjogren’s Syndrome.

She was born on MacMahan Island, Georgetown, Me., a daughter of Winfield R. and Hulda Henricksen MacMahan.

She was a member of Grace Episcopal Church, Bath.

Mrs. Betts was a businesswoman for more than six decades and owned and operated the Elite Beauty Salon in Bath, the Cut ‘N Curl in Wiscasset and the Cut ‘N Curl Beauty Salon in Hawthorne, Cali.

She was involved in many civic activities and organizations, including The Cosmopolitan Club, Pittman-Morrison Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, the Bath Senior Citizens and the Bath Grange, where she was a seventh-degree member.

Her husband, Lyman E. Betts, died previously.

Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Lacon H. (Patricia A.) Carlock III of Morristown, Tenn.; one sister, Mrs. Raymond (Virginia) Wallace of Davenport, Fla.; one brother, Edward MacMahan of Bath; one grandson, Michael L. Carlock of Elizabethon, Tenn.; one granddaughter, Stacey H. Carlock of Morristown, Tenn.; and one great-granddaughter, Grace Elizabeth of Kingsport, Tenn.

A graveside service will be held in Oak Grove Cemetery, Bath, at a time to be decided. Arrangements are by Desmond’s Funeral Home, Bath.

Elizabeth Clement Beverage
1998-07-31

Loving mother and grandmother Elizabeth Clement Beverage, 83 died Thursday at her residence in New Gloucester.

Born in Portland, the daughter of Wesley and Annie Clement Freese, she attended local schools, graduating from Westbrook Junior College.

Mrs. Beverage lived in New Gloucester 44 years and attended the First Congregational Christian Church of New Gloucester. She belonged to several associations, including the Order of Eastern Star, Gold Star Wives of America, New Gloucester Congregational Evening Guild, Roach Pond Improvement Assn., American Society of Clinical Pathologists and the Maine Association of Retirees.

She enjoyed fishing and family activities at her camp at Roach Pond.

Pre-deceased are her first husband Howard Jordan and her second husband Henry Beverage.

Surviving are one son, Wayne H. Jordan of New Gloucester; five grandchildren, Wendy Ordway, Daniel Jordan, Susan Bartlett, Karen Harlow, all of New Gloucester, and Patty Wolcott of Lake Placid, N.Y., and 13 great-grandchildren.

Charles Gleason Billings
1999-05-06

NORWAY - Charles Gleason Billings, 87, of Norway died Friday, April 30, at Stephens Memorial Hospital.

He was born in Norway on April 2, 1912, the son of Charles H. and Ada Frost Billings and was a graduate of Norway High School in 1929.

He faithfully served our country in the U. S. Navy during World War II.

He married Leah Henry on Nov. 27, 1935 and together they lived in Norway on Danforth Street for over 50 years.

He worked at the Norway Post Office for 40 years and retired from there in 1977.

He was a member of the Stone-Smart American

Legion 82 in Norway and had just received his 50 year recognition. He was a member of the Norway Weary Club. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and playing golf and was an avid sports fan. He was in the Norway Fire Department prior to WWII.

He is survived by his wife, Leah of Norway; a daughter and son-in-law, Julie and Dennis Hermans, of Norway; a son and daughter-in-law, C. David and Rebecca Billings of Brunswick, five grandchildren, Anne Hermans and Joe Hermans, both of Portland, Liza, Margo and Delia Billings of Brunswick.

He was predeceased by a sister, Barbara Warren.

Visiting hours were held on Tuesday, May 4 at the Weston-Chandler Funeral Home,, Norway.

A Memorial Mass will be held on Thursday, May 6 at 11 a.m. at St. Catherine's of Sienna in Norway with Father Lawrence Conley and Father Donald McAllister as celebrants.

Interment will follow at Norway Pine Grove cemetery in South Paris.

In lieu of flowers donations in his memory can be made to the Lewiston-Auburn Kidney Foundation, 710 Main St., Lewiston, ME 04240 or the Salvation Army.

SOUTH PARIS - Committal services for Carl Bisbee will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, May 20 at the Riverside Annex cemetery in South Paris with military honors; Arrangements by Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, Norway.

Edwin Ernest Black
2000-03-23

Edwin Ernest Black, 77, Waldoboro, passed away Tues., March 7 in North Carolina.

Edwin was born Nov. 28, 1922 in Limerick, the son of the late Ernest Edwin and Lenora Wood Black.

He attended school in Waldoboro and graduated from Waldoboro High School. After high school, Edwin received a degree in Education from the Gorham State Teacher’s College and a Master’s Degree from Boston University.

He served in Europe during World War II> After the war he taught in Union and Natick, Mass. for over 30 years.

Edwin was a member and past master of King Solomon’s Lodge #61 Waldoboro AF&M for 40 years. He was an extremely active adult leader of the Boy Scouts of America, both here and in Massachusetts, serving in many capacities for 30 years.

He is predeceased by a son, Earl Black.

He is survived by: his wife, Edna E. Jacobsen Black of Wilmington, NC, children, Ellen Curtis and Evelyn Waugh of Wilmington, Ernest Black of Marlboro, Eileen Bianchi of Waldoboro, brother John W. Black of Friendship, sister Ernestine Connelly of Waldoboro, 5 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours from 7-9 p.m., Sat., March 18 at Hall Funeral Home, 949 Main St., Waldoboro. A Masonic service will be held at 7:30 p.m., Sat., March 18. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m., Mon., March 20 at Hall Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Edwin’s memory to the Boy Scouts of America.
