Howard S. Brewer

Howard S. Brewer, 77, of Boothbay Harbor, passed away December 26, 2000, at St. Andrews Hospital after a long battle with diabetes. He was born August 6, 1923, the son of Sheridan and Charlena Brewer, in Boothbay Harbor. He graduated from Boothbay Harbor High School in 1942.

He joined the 69th Seabees in 1943, and served in WWII until 1946. The Seabees continued to be an important part of his life as he and his wife traveled to many reunions and hosted one locally in 1991.

He was a Master Mason in the Seaside Lodge #144 AF&AM and a member of the Spruce Point Chapel, serving as treasurer for many years. He was a past member of the Boothbay Region Fish and Game and in early years was active in The Boothbay Region Tuna Club, enjoying tuna fishing trips on the Capella with his friend, Capt. Ben Lewis.

Howard was employed for many years by Fisherman's Wharf Inn. He also worked as a lobsterman and a carpenter. Later he co-owned and operated Hilltop House, a local B&B, with his wife Virginia, and her sister and brother-in-law.

In later years he enjoyed time at the local coffee shops, riding around the region, attending grandchildren's sporting events, and taking a special interest in his granddaughter, Katie Lewis' horse show competitions.

He was predeceased by a sister, Dorothea Brewer, and one son, Barry Brewer.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia of Boothbay Harbor; his daughters Marcia Soler of Greenbush and East Boothbay, Joanne Lewis of Trevett, Maude Wright of Boothbay and Yarmouth, and Joni Sherman of Boothbay Harbor; eleven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; one brother, Charles, of South Venice, Florida; and several nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours were held Thursday, December 28 at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home with Masonic Services at 7 p.m. A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. on Friday, December 29, at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Maine Morgan Horse Club, in care of Judy Dorr, RR 2, Box 198 Boothbay, Maine 04357.

Arrangements were by Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, 975 Wiscasset Road, PO Box 576, Boothbay, Maine 04537.

Dorothy C. Bridgham
2000-11-02

LEWISTON- Dorothy C. Bridgham, 80, of Minot died Tuesday morning, October 24, 2000 at Central Maine Medical Center.

She was born in Minot, March 11, 1920, the daughter of William and Grace Crooker Daniels.

She graduated from Mechanic Falls High School and was a farmer's wife most of her life.

Mrs. Bridgham was a member of the Grange, the Extension and the 4H. She enjoyed gardening,cooking and animals.

She married Roland Bridgham in 1938; Mr. Bridgham died in 1991.

Survivors include a son, Daniel of Mapleton; a daughter; Jane Bridgham Bolduc of Minot; a grandson, David Bridgham of Meriden, NH; a granddaughter, Dina Goodall of Littleton,NH; a great grandson, Craig Goodall and a great granddaughter, Kristen Goodall both of Littleton.

Mrs. Bridgham was predeceased by a granddaughter Debra Pooler and two sisters, Ruby Cloutier and Jane Hackett.

Family and friends attended graveside services Sunday, October 29 at the Riverside Cemetery,West Minot.

Those who wish may make memorial gifts in her memory to the American Diabetes Association.

Arrangements are under the direction of Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, Mechanic Falls.

Elizabeth Hoppe Briggs
2000-12-21

Elizabeth Hoppe Briggs, 91, died Sat., Dec. 2, at the home of her son in Rhinebeck, N.Y.

Born December 19, 1908 in Cincinnati, Ohio, she was the daughter of Dr. Herman and Hermanie (Richard) Hoppe.

Mrs. Briggs was a graduate of Manhattanville College. She later attended the University of Cincinnati and also Columbia Presbyterian Medical School, where she was one of the early women candidates.

She met her husband, Philip G. Briggs, in St. Anthony, Newfoundland, where they both were volunteers for Sir Wilfred Grenfel’s hospital mission. During the early years of her marriage Mrs. Briggs moved with her family to Alaska where Philip Briggs operated the Briggs Steamship Company, and where she continued to raise their five children first on a ship and later in a log cabin outside Juneau.

After returning from Alaska to New York state and furthering her studies at Fordham University, Elizabeth Briggs was a professor of Biology and Botany at Manhattanville College. She was also an avid sailor and traveler. With her family and friends, she sailed the “Emily M” to Labrador, Greenland, Europe and Africa.

After retirement Mrs. Briggs moved to Maine with her husband, dividing their time between Bremen Long Island and their home in Nobleboro. She was active as a volunteer at Miles Memorial Hospital and Meals on Wheels. Joining her husband who volunteered for the International Executive Services, she spent time living in Jakarta and Athens.

Mrs. Briggs was predeceased in 1996 by her husband Philip. She spent the last four years living with her son Rem and her daughter-in-law Taylor in Rhinebeck, N.Y.

Mrs Briggs is survived by a daughter Sarah Hoffmann, New York, and four sons, Philip Briggs, Maine; Richard Briggs, Massachusetts; William Briggs, Maine, and Rem Briggs, New York.

Funeral Mass said at St. Patrick’s Church in Newcastle at 10 a.m. on Wed., Dec. 27, followed by the burial and a reception on Bremen Long Island. Transportation will be provided. In lieu of flowers, you may send a donation to: Catholic Relief Services P.O. Box 17090 Baltimore, MD 212203-7079.

Angela Valerie Brooks
2000-03-23

Angela Valerie Brooks, 24, formerly of Whitefield, died March 10 at her home as a result of a seizure disorder.

Born in Augusta on Sept. 13, 1975, she was the daughter of James Arthur and Christine Lea (Solomon) Brooks. Angela graduated from Whitefield School and was a 1993 graduate of Erskine Academy in South China.

She lived briefly in Bingham where she worked at Solon Manufacturing Company. Angela was a certified nursing assistant, having worked at Augusta Rehabilitation Center. She then worked as an inspector at SCI, formerly Digital Equipment, in Augusta.

Over the past year, Angela was a clerk and cashier at the Big Apple Store on Western Avenue. She also worked at times at the State St. and Stone St. locations.

She loved her daughter who is nearly six years old, and who just started school at Hussey School last fall.

Surviving are her mother, Christine Solomon and her stepfather, David Oxton of Gardiner; her daughter, Elizabeth Miller-Grant of Augusta; her father, James Brooks and her paternal grandfather, John Brooks, both of Cleveland, Ohio; her paternal grandmother, Valeria Slenczka of Palmer, Ohio; her maternal grandmother, Gladys Solomon of Whitefield; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins, including her special cousin, Judy Peaslee of Chicopee, Mass., and many friends.

A funeral service was held March 14 at Gray & Pratt Funeral Home, Windsor, with Rev. Warner Howard officiating. Burial will be held later at Whitefield Cemetery. If desired, the family suggests memorial gifts to the Angela Brooks Memorial Fund, c/o Christine Solomon, 26 Water St., Gardiner, ME 04345.

Dorothy Brooks
2000-09-07

WEST PARIS - DorothyE. Brooks, 88, of West Paris, widow of Ellsworth Brooks, died early Friday morning, September 1, 2000, at Ledgeview Nursing Home.

Mrs. Brooks was born in West Paris, September 11, 1911, the daughter of the late George E. and Arabelle (Estes) Buck, attended West Paris schools, and graduated from West Paris High School in 1930.

She was a life member of the West Paris Alumni Association.

Mrs. Brooks is survived by two sisters, Georgena Roberts of Norway, and Flossie DeCoster of West Paris and a brother, Ray Buck, of Port St. Lucie, FL.

Graveside funeral services were held at the Wayside Cemetery, West Paris, Sunday afternoon.Arrangements were under the direction of the Andrews Funeral Home, South Woodstock.

Charles Alton Brown
2001-03-22

Charles Alton Brown, 86, Somerville, a retired contractor and truck driver, died March 17, at Country Manor Nursing Home in Coopers Mills, where he had resided for the past several months.

Born in Somerville on Feb. 1, 1915, he was the son of Charles F. and Alphena (Hisler) Brown. Charles attended schools in Somerville and was a 1935 graduate of Cony High School in Augusta.

He served as Road Commissioner for the Town of Somerville for 54 years, and did plowing, sanding, and road work. Charles had his own gravel and contracting business. He was married on May 12, 1967 in Coopers Mills to Phyllis Hazen (Moreland) Turner. He was a member of Dirigo Lodge No. 104, AF & AM, Weeks Mills and also belonged to Lily of the Valley Chapter No. 157, Order of the Eastern Star, Weeks Mills.

For over twenty years, Charles worked at Windsor Fairgrounds, doing trucking. He hauled gravel there, and also did work on the racetrack. Charles was a baseball fan, and loved following both local and professional teams.

His wife died Aug. 23, 1997. Surviving are his two stepsons, Joseph W. Turner, Jr. of Meredith, NH and Ralph Turner of Somerville; six grandchildren, Jonathan Turner of New Hampshire; Jennifer Turner of California; Joanne Winkler of Massachusetts; Warren Turner of Turner, Jesse Turner of Somerville; and Ashley Turner of Bradford; his great grandson, Turner Winkler of Massachusetts; several nieces, nephews, and all of their family members.

Friends and relatives may call March 20, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Gray & Pratt Funeral Home, 5391 Windsor Neck Road, Windsor, with funeral service 1 p.m. March 21. Rev. Warner Howard will officiate, assisted by Mr. Donald Hewett. Spring Interment will be at Sand Hill Cemetery, Somerville. Dirigo Lodge No. 104 AF & AM, Weeks Mills, will conduct a public Masonic Memorial Service at 7:30 p.m. March 20, at the funeral home.

If desired, the family suggests memorial gifts to Town of Somerville, Attn: Somerville Days Committee, 665 Patricktown Road, Suite 1, Somerville, 04348. Contribution envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Christine Rosalee Bishop Brown
2000-10-26

Christine Rosalee Brown, 79, of Lenoir City, Tenn. and a summer resident of Pemaquid Beach, passed away Oct. 19, at her Tennessee home.

She was born May 22, 1921, the daughter of Nelson and Margaret Bishop of Lenoir City, Tenn.

She is survived by her husband, Donald V. Brown of Lenoir City and their son, Donald Brown Jr., of North Hollywood, Cal.

She is predeceased by her sister Erma Nell Greene of Atlanta, GA; her sister Anna Mae Bishop of enoir City and brothers A.B. Bishop and Samuel Nielson Bishop, Jr., of Washington, D.C.

She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Christine was a graduate of Lenoir City High School and was a student at Knoxville Business College.

During World War II, Christine was one of the first 100 WAVES in the U.S. Navy. During her assignment at the U.S. Navy Communications Intelligence Station in Washington, D.C., Christine received the Presidential Unit Citation Award for her outstanding contribution in computer analysis of German military messages.

She has since researched, written and published 16 Family Histories and was working on the 17th. For more than 20 years, she has directed the research project Surname Index for the State of Maine Library. She is a published author and past Regent of the West Knoxville DAR Chapter.

A Memorial service at the West Hills Chapel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints building, 400 Kendall Rd., Knoxville 2 p.m. on Sun., Nov. 19th.

The family has requested there be no flowers, memorials should be made in the name of Christine Brown to the local Boy Scout Council.

Robert W. Brown

Robert W. Brown, 51, of Brockton, Mass., formerly of Abington, Mass., died at his residence on Sunday, January 21 following a long illness.

For many years, he resided at the Wrentham Developmental Center in Wrentham, Mass. In more recent years, Mr. Brown was an active participant in the Crescent Enterprises Workshop, along with close associates from BAMSI (Brockton Area Multi Services, Inc.), under whose auspices he resided.

He was predeceased by his mother, Marian (Ricker) Brown.

He is survived by his father, Emery Brown of Sun City Center, Florida; a sister, Doris Burnham and her husband, Douglas, and a brother, Richard and his wife, Shirley, all of Boothbay; four nieces, Kimberly L. Burnham of Boothbay, Mary Fassett of Candler, Arizona, Barbara L. Burnham of South Hero, Vermont and Misty Jones of Waldoboro; a nephew, Richard W. Brown of Boothbay; and a great niece, Cassidy R. Jones of Waldoboro.

A graveside service and Interment will be held at a later date at the family plot in Elmwood Cemetery, Methuen, Mass.

Arrangements by the J. Frank Conley Funeral Home, 138 Belmont Street, Brockton, Mass.

Ernest D. Brown Jr.

Ernest Delos Brown Jr., 47, formerly of Hyannis, Massachusetts died on Monday, December 4, at St. Andrews Hospital.

Born in Hyannis, Massachusetts on September 16, 1953, he was the son of Ernest D. Brown Sr. and Phyllis Conant Brown.

Mr. Brown grew up on Cape Cod and graduated from Barnstable High School with the Class of 1971. He fished all his life. He worked with his grandfather, the late Roger Conant in the Plumbing and Heating Business. In 1981 he moved to Maine and lobstered in this area. He loved going fishing whether for work or fun, and he had a lot of close friends on Cape Cod and locally. He also worked for Boothbay Fuel Company.

Survivors include his parents, of Hyannis, Mass.; his daughter, Alacia Brown of Southport; his sister, Pamela Bouldry of Hyannis, Mass.; his two brothers, Creighton (Craig) Brown of Centerville, Mass. and Peter Brown of Osterville, Mass.; one nephew Gary Brown of Centerville, Mass.; three nieces, Kacy Brown and Erica Brown, both of Centerville, Mass., and Christina White of Hyannis, Mass.; and several cousins.

There will be a service of remembrance on Saturday, December 9 at 1 p.m. at the end of Gray Road in Newagen. Rev. Peter Baldwin Panagore will officiate. A graveside service will be held at the Oakgrove cemetery in Hyannis at a later date to be announced.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his memory to the Fisherman's Memorial Fund, or the American Diabetes Association.

Arrangements are by Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay.
