Mrs. Doris R. Slattery

WESTPARIS - Mrs. Doris R. Slattery, 94, of Pioneer Street, West Paris, wife of William A. Slattery, died Wednesday afternoon, November 21, 2001, at her home.
Born in Hartford on February 25, 1907, she was the daughter of Robert and Myrtle (Rowe) Woods. She attended Hartford schools, graduated from high school in 1925, and graduated from Farmington Normal School.
A teacher by profession, she taught in schools in West Paris and Greenwood for 28 years, until her retirement.
On June 29, 1929, she married William A. Slattery, who survives her, and had been a resident of West Paris for over 60 years.
Mrs. Slattery held membership in the West Paris Baptist Church, the Rebekahs, the Senior Citizens of West Paris, the Oxford County Teachers' Association, and the Tired Teachers Club.
She is also survived by a daughter-in-law, Dorothy R. Slattery, of Waterford, CT; a son-in-law, Erwin Heath, of Greene; seven grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren, and two great, great, grandchildren. Mrs. Slattery was pre-deceased by a daughter, Barbara S. Heath; a son, Commander Francis A. Slattery, U.S.N., Captain of the submarine, USS Scorpion, lost off the Azores in May of 1968 and two sisters, Barbara Swift, and Kathleen Philips.
Funeral services were held at the Andrews Funeral Home, Saturday, November 24, with Pastor Bruce Tyner, of the West Paris Baptist Church officiating. Interment was in the family lot at Riverside Annex Cemetery, South Paris.
Members of the family and friends serving as bearers were Stephen Slattery, Mike Record, Jessie Blier, Casey Blier, Roger Merrill, James Merrill, David Broberg, and Vance Bacon.

Mr. David E. Dingley

NORWAY - David E. Dingley, 75, of Norway died unexpectedly Friday morning at Stephens Memorial Hospital.
Born in Harrison on October 23, 1926, he was the son of Elmer and Etha Fleck Dingley.
He received his education in Harrison schools and Bridgton Academy. He joined the Navy in June, 1944 and served his country in the Pacific Theater during World War II.
He took part in the invasion of Okinawa and received an honorable discharge in 1946, the same year marrying Ruth McAlister on June 18th.
Dingley worked in saw mills in South Paris and Bolster's Mills and at Wilner Wood Products in Norway. He also worked as a carpenter-contractor in the local area and on many Holiday Inns here and in other states. He retired from driving armored trucks for Brink's Inc. in 1994.
He enjoyed traveling and with his wife took several trips around the United States and Canada. He was an avid camper and sportsman and took his grandchildren along on many trips. He was a member of the Ronald St. John VFW Post 9328 in Harrison.
He leaves his wife, of Norway, three sons and their
wives, Duane and Beth of South Paris, Douglas and Karen of Norway and Daniel and Cristina of South Paris, a daughter, Pamela Berube, of Norway; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a daughter, Patricia , in 1954 and five brothers, Caleb, Ronell, Sherman, Arthur and Leslie Fleck, and a sister, Irene Dingley.
Funeral services were held Monday at the Weston-Chandler Funeral Home in South Paris. Interment will be in the spring in Elm Vale Cemetery, South Waterford.
Those who wish may make memorial contributions to the Ronald St. John VFW Post 9328, Harrison, ME.

Mr. Mark Lee Fitch

BRIDGTON - Mark Lee Fitch, 23, of Bridgton, died Wednesday, March 27, 2002 at a Portland hospital.
Born in Bridgton on December 30, 1978, he was the son of Michael L. Fitch of Bridgton and the late Cora Sue Dominick of Bristol, CT.
While in school, Mark particularly enjoyed playing basketball and playing trumpet in the band. He was also very active as a Boy Scout in Troop 149 and was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church of Bridgton.
"Mark was a beautiful soul, who suffered intensely many years of his life. His true person was not known to many, his difficulties were not understood, and he was misjudged by many which caused him a great deal of pain. Thankfully, he has been freed from the pain of this world," his family said.
He is survived by his father; his aunt, Claudia Fitch and his sister, Maria Mellon all of Bridgton; his paternal grandmother, Lois Fitch of Bridgton and maternal grandfather, Robert Dominick of Bristol, CT; uncles and cousins.
Mark is also survived by two nephews, Austin and Johnathan, to whom he was a proud uncle.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Wednesday at St. Joseph's Church, Bridgton. Burial will be at Forest Hill Cemetery in the spring. If desired, donations can be made to the Children's Miracle Network, 22 Bramhall Street, Portland, ME 04101.

Mr. Jack W. Ring

OXFORD - Jack W. Ring, 66, of Oxford died unexpectedly Friday, May 24, 2002 at his home.
Born in West Paris, February 19,1936, he was the son of Joseph O. and Inez Thorne Ring, Jr .He attended school in West Paris and had worked at Wilner Wood Products, Penley Corporation and Cornwall Industries. He enjoyed riding in his Jeep and working.
Survivors include two sons, Jack and his companion, Martha, of Oxford and Scott and his wife, Carla, of Otisfield; a daughter, Robin Salls and her husband, Elwin, of South Paris; three grandchildren, Cheri and Ashley Salls and Scott Ring; two sisters, Jennie Kilponen and Delores (Dolly) Walker both of South Paris; a brother, Jim Ring of West Paris. Mr. Ring was predeceased by two sons, Jack W. Ring, Jr. and Robert G. Ring.
Family and friends may attend graveside services at 2 p.m. Friday at Riverside Annex Cemetery, South Paris.
In lieu of flowers those who wish may make memorial gifts in his memory to Tri Town Rescue, West Paris. Arrangements are under the direction of Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, 230 Main Street, Norway.

Mrs. Felonise S. Merchant

SOUTH PARIS - Felonise S. Merchant of South Paris died Monday, July 29 at Market Square Health Care Center following a long illness.
Born in Temple on March 23, 1915, she was the daughter of Harry and Mary Blodgett Stevens. She attended schools in Temple and had been a homemaker most of her life. She had been employed at a clothespin factory.
She loved flowers and used to have a greenhouse where she grew orchids. She married Ardeen Ayer Merchant, Sr., who predeceased her in July, 1993.
She is survived by a son, Ardeen Ayer Jr. and his wife Dayle of Norway; a sister, Viola Armandi of Eustis; grandchildren, BJ Merchant and Deanna Merchant both of Norway and Melissa; step grandchildren, Christopher James Morgan of Norway and Heather Erin Morgan of Tahoe, CA; 2 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a daughter, Mary Darling in March, 1994; and a brother, Marvin.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Aug. 1 at 11 a.m. at the Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, 230 Main St., Norway with interment to follow at the Temple Cemetery in Temple.

Mr. Vieno H. Heikkinen

TURNER - Vieno H. Heikkinen, 87, of Fern Street, Turner died Saturday, September 28 at D'Youville Pavilion in Lewiston.
He was born in West Paris on April 26, 1915, the son of Abel and Heleena Klemetti Heikkinen. He attended Turner schools and some trade schools and for over 45 years operated the family farm. He trucked farm produce to local and out-of-state markets. He had worked on road building projects and plowed snow on town roads for many years.
Mr. Heikkinen was a member of the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran church in South Paris and Mission Congregational Church in West Paris and a charter member of the Finnish American Heritage Society of Maine. He was a private pilot and owned his own plane. He enjoyed motors, sports and fishing. Several years ago he visited Finland to visit relatives. On June 6, 1942 he married Dorothy Lowell.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, of Turner; two sons, Thomas and Robert, both of Turner; three daughters, Beverly Wing of Greene, Helen Heikkinen of Auburn and Irene Heikkinen of Viola, WI; grandchildren and great-grandchildren and one sister, Salme Rucker of Sumner. Mr. Heikkinen was predeceased by a sister, Lena Heikkinen Lowell and a brother, K. Jalmari Heikkinen.
Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, South Paris with interment in the Finnish Cemetery, West Paris. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Turner Rescue, Turner, Maine 04282.

Mrs. Gladys E. Weeks

WINDHAM - Gladys E. Weeks of Highland Cliff Road in Windham died Thursday, October 17, in Windham after a long illness. She was formerly from South Paris.
She was born July 30, 1904, a daughter of Percy E. Rogers and Edna J. Rogers Leighton, in Center Conway, NH.
Mrs. Weeks was educated in Windham schools and graduated valedictorian of the Class of 1923 from Windham High School. She attended almost every alumni banquet and was honored two years ago as the only member of her class attending. She was the last surviving member of the Class of 1923.
She also graduated from Gorham Normal School and taught school at Highland Lake in Westbrook and also at the Warren School.
She married Lincoln W. Weeks on December 25, 1926, and became a hardworking, full-time housewife and mother of six children. She was active in the PTA, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, and any organization to which her children belonged, always helping in every way possible.
Mrs. Weeks was a member of the Highland Cliff Advent Christian Church in Windham and loved her church and all its activities, participating whenever possible. She was the greeting care correspondent for many years. She was a beautiful penman and especially enjoyed writing and sending cards, letters and notes of encouragement to all her family and friends on every occasion and many times when there wasn't even a special occasion. She was also Sunday School teacher for many years.
Mrs. Weeks was a charter member of Pinea Rebekah Lodge 71 in Windham and its only financial secretary from 1950 to 1997, when she had to resign due to blindness. She received her 50-year pin and was very honored and proud of this, as well as her Degree of Chivalry.
She was a life member of the Windham Historical Society.
Mrs. Weeks also enjoyed and found comfort in her gold cat "Big Boy," worrying more about him than herself. He was always at her side or in her lap until his passing two years ago.
Her husband, Lincoln W. Weeks died May 17, 1971, and her only brother, Howard O. Rogers, died in 1989.
Surviving are three sons, Ralph and his wife Jean, Gerald and his wife Gail, and Raymond and his wife Joan, all of Windham; three daughters, Joyce and her husband Brian Fullerton of Windham, Barbara Atwood and her husband Edward of Reserve NM and Shirley Atkinson and her husband Hiram of Westbrook; 17 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews and cousins. Cousins in the South Paris area are Carroll Record, Edwin Record and Marion Edwards.
Contributions in her memory may be made to the Highland Cliff Advent Christian Church, 96 Highland Cliff Rd., Windham, ME or the Windham Rescue Unit, P.O. Box 330, Windham, ME 04062.

Mr. Robert D. Parsons

HARTFORD - Robert D. Parsons, age 74 of Hartford, died Friday, January 24, 2003 at Central Maine Medical Center.
He was born in Hartford on December 20, 1928, a son of Harold E. and Sadie Ingersoll Parsons. He attended local schools and graduated from Gould Academy in 1947. He later attended CMVTI for construction training.
Mr. Parsons worked for Blue Rock Industries for 33 years as a crane operator. After retirement, he worked for Pike Industries as a heavy equipment operator. He was a member of local masonic lodges and was a Shriner.
He is survived by his wife, Lorraine (Leighton) of Hartford; a son, Scott Greig of Florida; a daughter, Kim Winslow of Raymond; a brother, Dwight Parsons of Gorham; a sister, Marjorie Parsons, of Gorham and three grandchildren, Stefan, Justin and Marrissa Winslow, all of Raymond.
Graveside services will be held later in the spring at the Parsons Cemetery in Hartford. In lieu of flowers, family requests cards only. Arrangements are under the care of the Andrews Funeral Home, Buckfield.

Mrs. Linda L. Westgate

POLAND - Linda L. Westgate, 56, of Poland died peacefully, March 30 at Market Square Health Care Center following a sudden illness.
She was born in Lewiston on July 18, 1946, the daughter of Charles L. and Gladys Corson Cummings. She was married to Arthur Westgate, Sr. of Poland at the age of 18. Her hobbies included reading, cowboy and animal movies, collecting Elvis and John Wayne memorabilia and spending time with her family. She loved walking tracks at local high schools and just being outside. Her greatest joy was her granddaughter, her greatest passion was her husband and her greatest celebration was her children. She also enjoyed getting away with her husband on special weekends to Old Orchard Beach or Saco. She was a special person who loved her family more than life. She will be greatly missed by all that knew her.
Mrs. Westgate is survived by her husband of 37 years, Arthur Westgate, Sr. of Poland; four children, Carol Johnson and her husband Robert of Norway, Arthur Jr. and his wife Katie of Poland, Robert and his wife Cindy of Minot and Alan of Poland; her mother, Gladys Cummings of Norway; a brother, Charles Roland Cummings and his wife Kathi of Leeds; a sister, Patricia Garnett and her husband David of Houston, TX; and one grandchild, Ashley Westgate of Poland. She was predeceased by her father and a daughter, April M. Westgate.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, 230 Main St., Norway. Interment will be later in the spring at Norway Pine Grove Cemetery in South Paris. Family and friends called at the funeral home on Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. Remembrance donations can be made to Market Square Health Care Center, 3 Market Square, South Paris, ME 04281.

Mrs. H. Louise Morse

NORTH WATERFORD - H. Louise Morse, 81, of North Waterford went to heaven on May 25, with her family by her side.
She was born in Stow, March 26, 1922, the daughter of Cory and Evelyn Emery Wales. When she was one year old, the family moved to Fryeburg Harbor where she grew up.
She was a hard worker, working in local shoe factories and other factories in the area. She worked for Western Maine Area Agency on Aging, a job she loved. She ran Grammy's Day Care, which was watching and spoiling her grandchildren. She was a member of the Waterford Grange, North Waterford Church and Evergreen Rebekah Lodge. She enjoyed camping, bowling, family get-togethers and stock car racing. On Jan. 26, 1940, she married Irving 'Dike' Morse, who passed away in April of 1992.
Survivors include two daughters, Martha Morse and Ellen Bernier and her husband Lou, all of North Waterford; a brother, Rodney Wales and his wife Pat of Fryeburg; a sister, Lorraine Kneeland and her husband John of Rhode Island; 12 grandchildren, Bobby and Angel, Brian and Coleen, Holly and Jansen, Dawn and Joseph, Richard and Dottie, Troy and Colleen, Michael and Beth, Kelly and Abel, Vicky and Donald, Eric and Darcy, Arthur and Shannon and Uli Toothaker; 21 great-grandchildren, Jason, Jannelle, Austin, Dean, Bryan, Lea, Kane, Raven, Emily, Mikya, Mindy, Mariah, Cody, Andrew, Allison, Spencer, Whitney, Allison, Madison, Brodye and Bryce. She was predeceased by two sons, Kenneth and Hollis; two sisters, Elsie and Virginia; a grandson, Jeffrey and a great grandson, Jared.
Funeral services were held at the North Waterford Congregational Church with interment at Bemis Cemetery in Fryeburg. Memorial gifts can be made to the North Waterford Congregational Church. Arrangements were under the direction of Weston Chandler Funeral Home, 45 Main St., South Paris.
