Thelma H. Corbett
1999-01-07

WEST PARIS - Thelma H. Corbett, 9,7 of South Paris, died Monday morning at Ledgeview Nursing Home.

She was born in Sumner, October 7, 1901, the daughter of Frederick and Harriet Turner Caswell.

She graduated from Buckfield High School and Farmington Normal School.

In her younger years she was a schoolteacher, most of her life she was a homemaker.

She attended the Universalist Church, enjoyed gardening and was a good seamstress.She was married to Wilfred Corbett who predeceased her.

She is survived by a daughter, Louise Currier of Springvale; a sister, Angie Eadon of Long Beach, CA; four grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held in the spring at Riverside Annex Cemetery, South Paris. The time will be announced at a later date. Arrangements are by Weston-Chandler Funeral Home,South Paris.

Erwin Corbett
1999-01-21

BORGER, TEXAS - Erwin Corbett, 72, died Wednesday, December 16, at his home in Borger, TX.

Services were held at the Cornerstone Church with Pastor James Loper officiating and Assistant Pastor David Heider assisting. Graveside services were held in The Garden of Devotion at Westlawn Memorial Park, under the direction of Minton/Chatwell Funeral Directors of Borger.

Mr. Corbett was born in South Paris and had been a Borger resident since 1956. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II.

He married Bobbie Terry on December 6, 1945 in Borger. He was a retired inspector at the Pantex Plant in Amarillo. He was a member of Keeler Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by one son, Michael L. Corbett in 1977.

Survivors include his wife, Bobbie J. Corbett of the home; two sons, Terry Lee Corbett of Borger and Roger A. Corbett of South Paris; one daughter, Deborah Corbett Turner of Borger; four sisters, Phyllis Whitney, Janice Rosenberg and Leone Callina, all of South Paris and Melva Simmons of Strasburg, VA; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Casket bearers were Gene Majors, Clyde Hutto, Burch Ingram, Randale Cowan, Michael Bailey and Larry Richardson.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Panhandle.

Mrs. Edith R. Corbett
1999-12-16

CORNING, NY - Edith R. Corbett, 98, of Corning, NY died Saturday December 11, 1999.

Mrs. Corbett was born in Elmsdale, Nova Scotia on July 4, 1901, the daughter of Monson and Rachel Dalrymple Rines.

After the family moved to Maine, she graduated from Fryeburg Academy in 1920 and then taught school in South Paris.

She married Merton Corbett in 1924, who predeceased her in 1980.

She was employed at B. E. Cole Shoe Company in Norway.

Mrs. Corbett was a former member of the Norway Baptist Church where she served for many years in the Sunday School and as Missionary Treasurer. She was a member of the East Lindley Baptist Church in Lindley, NY. Mrs. Corbett was predeceased by a daughter, Miriam Corbett, four brothers, and two sisters.

She is survived by a daughter and son in law, Carmen and William Hutchins, of Corning, NY; two grandchildren; seven great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours were held December 14 at the Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, Norway. Funeral Services followed visitation at the funeral home with Rev. Ralph Brown officiating.

Donations in Mrs. Corbett's memory can be made to the Norway Baptist Church, Norway, ME or the East Lindley Baptist Church, Corning, NY.

Suzanne K. Cordwell
1999-01-21

OXFORD - Suzanne K. Cordwell, 56, of Oxford died Friday January 15, 1999, peacefully at her home with her family in Oxford.

She was born in Concord, NH, February 27, 1942, the daughter of James and Audrey Knee. She graduated from Norway High School in 1960.

On September 2, 1960 she married Barry Cordwell in Norway. She worked in the former Miller shoe factory. She will best be remembered as a waitress for 23 years at the Country Way Restaurant in South Paris.

She is survived by her husband of Oxford; a son Dwayne of Danvers, MA; a daughter, Nicole and her husband Richard Van Loan of Casco, two granddaughters, Shannon and Meghan Van Loan; her mother, Audrey of South Paris; a sister, Rosemary and her husband Thomas Belanger of Norway, and their sons Lance, Jon, and Mark; a special brother, Fred Damon and his wife Natalie and their son Greg of North Yarmouth, a brother-in-la,w Steve Cordwell and his wife Stacia of Oxford; a niece, Kim of Massachusetts; a nephew, Shavin Cordwell of Oxford and her mother- in-law, Millie Cordwell of Norway.

At Suzanne's request there will be no services held. Those wishing may make memorial contributions to the Oxford Rescue, PO Box 173, Oxford, Maine 04270.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Weston-Chandler Funeral Home 230 Main St. Norway.

Mrs. Gwendolyn B. Cordwell
1999-11-18

NORWAY - Gwendolyn B. Cordwell, 85, of Norway died Monday, November 15, 1999 at Stephens Memorial Hospital.

She was born in Norway on July 9, 1914, a daughter of Ronell C. and Mary Driscoll Bicknell.

She graduated from Norway High School and she had been a homemaker most of her life.

She did alterations for L.F. Pike and Sons. She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge and the Congregational Church Guild.

She married George W. Cordwell on September 10, 1937; he passed away on December 2, 1997.

She is survived by a daughter, Thelma C., and her husband, Don Mills, of Norway; a son, William Cordwell of Norway; four grandchildren, Dan Mills of Norway, Laurie Proctor of Oxford, Michael Cordwell of West Paris and Michelle Patten of Clinton and 10 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by two sisters, Thelma E. Bicknell and Helena Gammon.

Graveside services will be held on Thursday November 18, at 1 p.m. at Norway Pine Grove Cemetery, South Paris.

Donations in her memory can be made to Androscoggin Home Health-Hospice Division, 15 Strawberry Ave., Lewiston, ME 04243.

Arrangements are under the direction of Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, Norway.

Doris Mary Cornell
1998-07-16

LEBANON, NH - Doris Mary Cornell, 92, died Saturday afternoon, July 11, 1998, at the Lebanon Center, Genesis Eldercare in Lebanon, New Hampshire. She was born on November 18, 1905 in Montreal, PQ the daughter of Thomas and Anna (Cloran) Quigley.

She was married to Charles J. Cornell in Montreal, PQ in 1930 and they came to the United States in 1950 and lived in Bethel and South Paris. She worked as a bookkeeper at Ripley & Fletcher Ford Dealership in South Paris. Mr. Cornell died in 1970. Mrs. Cornell moved to White River Jct., Vermont, in 1981.

She was a member of the Bugbee Senior Center in White River Jct. When she lived in Maine she was a member and past president of the Catholic Women's Organization at St. Catherine's Church in Norway.

She leaves a daughter, Joan C. Howe of White River Jct.; three sons, Eric J. Cornell of Leominster, Massachusetts, Kenneth C. Cornell of Oxford, Keith J. Cornell of South Paris; 11 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Wednesday at St. Anthony's Church in White River Jct. Burial was in the Riverside Annex cemetery in South Paris.

Memorial contributions may be made to either St. Anthony's Church, 2 Church Street, White River Jct., VT 05001 or to the Bugbee Senior Center, PO Box 158, Whiter River Jct., VT 05001.

Lillian Maud (Schwenke) Cotton
1998-06-18

NORWAY - Lillian Maud (Schwenke) Cotton, 96, of Norway, formerly of South Portland and Windham, died Tuesday June 9, 1998, at the Norway Rehabilitation Center.

She was born in Revere, MA, on July 2, 1901, the daughter of Alfred and Eva Hindon Schwenke. She graduated from Denmark High School and Burdette Business College in Boston, MA. She had been a homemaker most of her life. She was a member of the First Church of Christ Scientists of Portland, and the Mother Church in Boston.

She played cello with the Portland Symphony Orchestra and was a member of Land `O' Lakes Garden Club in Windham.

She married Ralph Gould Cotton on August 18, 1929 and he died on October 12, 1978.

She is survived by one son, Robert Cotton of Oxford; two daughters, Jean I. Pippin of Naples and Elizabeth M. Stone of Wilton, NH; three grandsons, Mark A. Cotton, Kenneth Pippin, and Patrick Clarke; three granddaughters, Marie A. Hamper, Debra Cross, and Julie Clarke; three great-grandsons, Christopher Hamper, James Cotton, and Jeff Pippin, four great-granddaughters, Katie Marie Cotton, Rebecca Cotton, Alina Cross, and Heather Pippin; three step great-granddaughters, Melissa, Erin, and Sarah Elkins and one great-great-grandson, Jacob.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at the Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, Norway.

Donations in Mrs. Cotton's memory may be sent to the Christian Science girls' camp Camp Newfound, Harrison, or to the Christian Science boys' camp Owatonna RR1, Box 105, care of Anne Thayer, Harrison.

Arnold Cowley
1999-08-05

Arnold Cowley, 73, of Boothbay Harbor died Wednesday, July 28, at Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta.

Born in Wiscasset on May 28, 1926, he was the son of Clarence and Lois Pooler Cowley. He was a graduate of Lincoln Academy in Newcastle.

Mr. Cowley served in the Army Artillery in Fort Sill, Oklahoma during the Korean Conflict. After his service years he moved to Boothbay Harbor to live. For 41 years he worked at the Mason Station in Wiscasset, retiring in 1985.

He enjoyed building model boats and traveling in his motor home.

Mr. Cowley was a member of American Legion Post 36 in Boothbay, a past president of the Lions Club, former member of the Power Squadron and retired from the Boothbay Harbor Fire Department. He was also a member of Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Boothbay Harbor.

Survivors include his wife, Jane Cowley of Boothbay Harbor; one niece; and three nephews.

A funeral mass was held on Saturday, July 31 at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church on Atlantic Avenue in Boothbay Harbor. Father Royal Parent officiated.

Donations may be made in his memory to Our Lady Queen of Peace Youth Ministry, P.O. Box 82, 465 Atlantic Avenue, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538.

Arrangements were by Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay.

Stanley H. Cram
1998-07-16

NORWAY - Stanley H. Cram, 75, of West Paris, died Thursday, July 9, 1998 at Stephens Memorial Hospital were he had been a patient.

Born in Sanford on March 8, 1923, he was the son of the late Dana C. and Minnie C. (Whitten) Cram. He attended Sanford area schools and graduated from Sanford High School.

He served in World War II in the Army Air Force, seeing action at Normandy and the Rhineland. He earned the European-African-Middle Eastern Ribbon with six bronze stars. After leaving the Army Air Force he returned to finish his schooling at Sanford High School. On June 3, 1950, he married the former Maxine Farr and relocated to West Paris, where he had been a resident for almost 50 years.

He was employed at the Advertiser-Democrat Newspaper in Norway as a liner type operator. He later was promoted to a foreman at the newspaper before retiring in 1985, after more than 40 years of service.

A member of the West Paris Universalist Unitarian Church, he served as the moderator, youth leader, and Sunday School superintendent. He enjoyed camping and will be remembered as a devoted father and husband and one who was dedicated to his family.

Besides his wife of 48 years he is survived by two sons, Terry of South Paris and Arnold of Harrison; a brother, Clayton of Acton; and eight grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Dana and Reggie, and a sister, Edna Hill.

Funeral services were held Sunday, July 12 at Andrews Funeral Home, South Woodstock. The Rev. Robert Sallies and Rev. Gasta Officiated. Bearers were Vance Bacon, Vern Inman, Alfred Allen, Troy Fox, Adam Cram and Dennis Hazelton. Interment was in the Wayside Cemetery, West Paris.

Those who wish may make donations in Stanley's memory to Tri-Town Rescue, PO Box 275 West Paris, ME 04289.
