Major William M. Stewart II

Major William Watson Stewart II (USA Ret.) 86, died at Avon Health Center, Avon, Conn., on Sunday, September 10.

Born in Forfar, Glenogle, Scotland, on May 18, 1914, he was the son of the late James Robertson and Elizabeth (Campbell) Stewart. He grew up in West Hartford and had lived in Unionville following his marriage to the late Eveline (Moses) Stewart in 1944, moving to Village Gate Farmington in 1996. He maintained a summer home in East Boothbay for 29 years.

In 1932 he graduated from the William High School in West Hartford. During his working career he returned to school to complete his college education, graduating from the University of Hartford, Class of 1964, where he received an Associate of Science degree in Business Administration. He was a 20-year member of the Connecticut Army National Guard and served 42 months in the South Pacific theatre during World War II. Mr. Stewart resigned from the Connecticut National Guard as a Major in 1957. He was a member of Farmington Memorial Post 10361, Veterans of Foreign Wars in Farmington, Conn.

In 1979 Mr. Stewart retired from Northeast Utilities (NU) where he had been a District Business Office Supervisor in Torrington. His 43-year career with NU began when one of the original companies that composed NU, the Hartford Electric Light Company, hired him in 1936.

He had been a trustee of the Farmington Village Green and Library Association in Farmington. For over 50 years he was an active member of the First Church of Christ, Congregational in Unionville. For many years Mr. Stewart, an active Republican, served on the Farmington Town Plan and Zoning Commission, first as an alternate and subsequently as a full-time commissioner. Survivors include two sons, Scott Cameron Stewart of Rockland and Seth Hamilton Stewart of Boston, Mass. and Newcastle; sister-in-law, Mrs. James Campbell Stewart of Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.; cousins, William Watson Stewart, III of Kensington, Md., Mrs. Wells Brown of Ridgefield, Conn., and Miss Margaret R. Stewart of San Francisco, Calif., and several nieces and a nephew.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, September 16 at 2 p.m. at the First Church of Christ, Congregational, 61 Main Street in Unionville, with the Rev. Thomas F. Dean, Pastor, officiating. Private Interment will be in the Moss-Stewart family plot in Greenwood cemetery in Avon, Conn.

Memorial donations may be made in his name to the First Church Of Christ, Congregational, 61 Main Street, Unionville, CT 06085.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of J.S. Waterman & Sons Eastman-Waring, 497 Commonwealth Ave., Boston, Mass.

Ralph E. Farrar

Ralph E. Farrar, 49, of Bremen, died Wednesday, October 4 at the home of his son, Jamie, after a long illness.

Born October 29, 1950 in Boothbay Harbor, he was the son of Edward T. and Christine (Feltis) Farrar.

Mr. Farrar graduated from Lincoln Academy in the Class of 1969. For many years he was self-employed as a Marine Specimen Preservationist, working until illness forced his retirement.

After the birth of his daughter, Heather, he began playing drums professionally, working with several bands in the area. He also had a lifelong love for hunting, fishing and, most especially, chocolate.

Survivors include his mother, Christine Thurber of Newcastle; one son, James E. of Bremen; one daughter, Heather Higgins of Jefferson; two sisters, Rosalie Campbell of Damariscotta and Carla Dubord of Jefferson; and his granddaughter, Megan Farrar.

Visiting hours were held Friday, October 6 at the Strong Funeral Home in Damariscotta. A graveside service followed at the New Harbor Cemetery, with Rick Newell officiating. He was laid to rest with his father.

Margaret O. Hodgdon

Margaret O. Hodgdon, 89, died Thursday, October 5 at Cove's Edge in Damariscotta.

She was born on July 6, 1911, and graduated from high school in Massachusetts. She married John J. Oliver, and was a homemaker and a mother. She was predeceased by her husband John J. Oliver Sr. and later married George W. Hodgdon.

Mrs. Hodgdon enjoyed knitting, crocheting and sewing.

She was predeceased by her husband, George W. Hodgdon on June 9, 1979.

Mrs. Hodgdon is survived by her son, John J. Oliver Jr. of Damariscotta.

A graveside service was held on Wednesday, October 11 in Greenlawn cemetery in Wiscasset. Arrangements were by Mayo & Daigle Funeral Home of Wiscasset.

George W. Stickney Jr.

George W. Stickney Jr., 67, of Jefferson, died Monday, October 9 at Maine General Hospital in Augusta.

Born in Wiscasset on October 23, 1932, he was the son of George W. And Louise A. (Grover) Stickney Sr. He attended Wiscasset schools and graduated from Wiscasset Academy in the class of 1950. He served in the United States Army. On September 5, 1953 he married Gertrude M. Lincoln. Until 1963 he was employed at Chase Farm Equipment in Whitefield, and until 1975, he was employed by Bridge Construction in Windsor. He currently owned and operated Clary Lake Auto Parts in Jefferson.

Mr. Stickney was a member of the Riverside Lodge of Masons where he was a two-time Past Master, Past Worthy Grand Patron of the Order of the Eastern Star in Jefferson and a member of the South Jefferson United Baptist Church. Years ago he was active in performing at minstrel shows and playing tournament horseshoes.

He was predeceased by his wife Gertrude Stickney on July 16, 1993; one daughter, Darlene R. Anderson on August 25, 1999; and one sister Adeline Harvey.

Survivors include one son, George W. Stickney III and his wife Wanda L. of Whitefield; one daughter, Bertha "Bee Bee" Naylor and her husband Michael of South Bristol; two sisters, Blanche Johnson of Wiscasset and Diane Sutherburg of Newcastle; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchild-ren and many nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, October 12 at Mayo & Daigle Funeral Home in Wiscasset with a Masonic Service at 7 p.m. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, October 13 at the United Baptist Church of South Jefferson with Pastor JoAnne Hilton officiating. Burial will follow in Highland cemetery in Jefferson. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 52 Federal Street, Brunswick, ME 04011.

Grace Humason Cray
1998-10-08

Grace Humason Cray, 78, of Wiscasset, died Wednesday, September 30 at Winship Green Nursing Center in Bath.

Born in Alna on September 11, 1920, she was the daughter of William and Susie (Bailey) Humason Sr. She attended Alna schools and worked for Aurbach Shoe in Brunswick, Congress Sportswear in Bath as a seamstress and at the Edgecomb Inn in Edgecomb.

Mrs. Cray was a member of the Bath Foursquare Gospel Church in Bath where she played the piano, the organ and taught Sunday School.

She enjoyed spending time with her family, grandchildren and enjoyed cooking, gardening, music and played several instruments.

Survivors include four daughters, Marie Stephenson and her husband John of E. Greenbush, New York, Shirley Leslie and her husband William of Ellsworth, Naomi Robinson and her husband David of Indiana Polis, Indiana, and Maxine Willis and her husband Richard of Ellsworth; two sons, Gerald Cray and his wife Mary Ellen of Augusta, and Raymond Cray and his wife Kathy A. of Wiscasset; three sisters, Barbara Riccitelli of Palm Bay, Fla., Martha Hyler of Cushing and Helen Schrader of Merrimack, N.H.; one brother, Robert Humason of Tacoma, Wash.; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by one son, David Cray; one daughter, Thelma McLaughlin Heeder; and one brother, William Humason Jr.

A funeral service was held on Saturday, October 3 at the Foresquare Gospel Church in Bath with Rev. Chuck Nace and Harold Header officiating. Burial followed in Alna cemetery in Alna. Memorial contributions may be made to the Foursquare Gospel Church Youth Ministry, 405 Center Street, Bath, ME 04530.

Gertrude L. Crider
2000-06-15

Gertrude Livingston Crider, 85, died June 10 at her home in West Boothbay Harbor.

Born in Cleveland, Ohio December 5, 1914, she was the daughter of Francis and Helen Walters Livingston.

Mrs. Crider was a long-time resident of Falls Church, Virginia and Melbourne, Florida. Following the death of her husband, Martin C. Crider in 1985, she moved to Boothbay Harbor to be near her surviving daughter, Laura Livingston Hyson. She was a housewife and mother and an active church member in her various communities.

She was predeceased by her husband, two sisters and four brothers.

Surviving her is her daughter Laura Livingston Hyson of West Boothbay Harbor.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. on Monday, June 19, at the United Methodist Church in Boothbay Harbor. The Rev. Allan Wells-Goodwin will officiate. Donations may be made to the United Methodist Church of Boothbay Harbor, 75 Townsend Avenue, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538. Arrangements are by Simmons, Harrington & Hall of Boothbay.

Clarence Crocker Jr.
1998-07-16

Clarence Edward Crocker Jr., infant son of Clarence ``Eddie" and Candace Hunter Crocker Sr. of Cumberland, formerly of Boothbay, died Monday, July 6 at Maine Medical Center. He was born July 6.

Survivors include his parents of Cumberland; his paternal grandparents, Richard and Diane Crocker of Boothbay; his maternal grandparents, Robert Hunter of Boothbay and Barbara Boutwell of Greenville, Mass.; his greatgrandparents, Esther Hunter of Boothbay, William Kennedy of Northfield, Mass., and Marion Bacon of Vero Beach, Florida; two aunts, one uncle and two cousins.

A funeral service was held Monday, July 13 at the Boothbay Baptist Church, Boothbay. Al Roberts officiated. Interment was in Evergreen Cemetery, Boothbay. Arrangements by Simmons & Harrington Funeral Home, Boothbay Harbor.

Shawn Marlowe Crocker
1998-08-13

Shawn Marlowe Crocker, 33, formerly of Westport Island, died early on the morning of August 9 from injuries sustained in a single car accident in Newcastle.

Mr. Crocker attended Wiscasset schools, where he excelled in varsity sports. He later entered the U.S. Marine Corps, serving both in and out of the country for four years. For many years he was selfemployed, most recently in shellfish and tuna fishing, and had a lifelong love of hunting, fishing and his family.

Survivors include his parents of Damariscotta; maternal grandmother, Helen Janicki of Wiscasset; one brother, Daniel James Crocker, a Marine, stationed in Maryland; one sister, Kathleen May Hammond of Damariscotta; as well as one nephew and three nieces.

A service will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, August 13 at the South Jefferson Baptist Church, Route 215, with Pastor Joanne Hilton officiating. He will be laid to rest in the Trask Lawn Cemetery, Jefferson.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Strong Funeral Home, Damariscotta.

Donald E. Crocker Sr.
1999-09-23

MORENO VALLEY, CA - Donald E. Crocker Sr., 65, died Monday, September 13, at his home in Moreno Valley, CA, after suffering a long illness.

Mr. Moreno was born on November 26, 1933, on Pioneer Street in West Paris, the son of the late Ernest and Hattie Crocker.

He served his country in the U.S. Army from 1950 to 1954, then lived in South Paris for the next 15 years.

He worked as a laborer and then a foreman in the heel business which moved him to Vermont and then California where he spent the last 25 years of his life. He married Dorene Kettell of Moreno Valley and just celebrated a tenth year wedding anniversary.

His greatest joy in life was stock car racing, which he did in the late 50s into the early 70s at Oxford Plains Speedway. He was known as Dangerous Don Crocker by his race buddies and fans.

He is survived by his wife, Dorene Kettell Crocker of Moreno Valley; his stepdaughter Kendra Priddy of Moreno Valley; two sons, Donald E., Jr. of East Poland and Dana E. of Belmont, NH; three daughters, Diane E. Delano of Oxford, Doris E. Brady of Laconia, NH; and Denise E. Tennyson of Gilford, NH; eight grandchildren, Glen, Eric, Angela, Anthony, Malcolm, Danaben, Christopher, and Joshua; and one great-grandchild, Paige.

He was predeceased by his parents, Ernest and Hattie; two sisters, Mary Hamilton and Viola Billings; and two brothers, Erland and Millard.

Ralph E. Cromwell
2000-03-23

Ralph E. Cromwell, 94, died Tuesday, March 21 at Sancta Maria Nursing Facility. He was born in Somerville, Massachusetts on September 4, 1905, the son of George and Elizabeth Cromwell. He lived in Arlington, Mass. for 49 years, spending much of his retirement at his home in Boothbay Harbor. Mr. Cromwell was predeceased by his wife of 48 years, Martha, as well as his brother, Leonard, and sisters, Gertrude and Barbara. He is survived by his son, Ronald A Cromwell; a niece, Cathleen Manning of Southboro, Mass.; and a nephew, Luc Straetmans of Kontich, Belgium. Visiting hours are on Friday, March 24 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Stanton Funeral Home in Watertown, Mass. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at Saint Camillus Church on Saturday, March 25 at 9 a.m., with Interment to follow at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Arlington.

Mrs. Beverly Cronin
1999-11-11

LEWISTON - Beverly Cronin, 66, of Oxford died Thursday, November 4, at Central Maine Medical Center after a short illness.

She was born in Lewiston on June 6, 1933, the daughter of Ernest and Maude (Cox) Patten.

Mrs. Cronin worked as an expeditor for B.E. Cole for many years.

She was very family oriented and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and at family functions.

She was predeceased by her first husband and father of all their children, William V. Robertson; a brother, Leroy Patten; and her sister, Hazel Williams.

She is survived by her daughter, Brenda Grover, of Oxford; sons, Mitch Robertson of Cudjoe Key, FL, Chris Robertson of Brockton, MA, Matt Robertson of Auburn, Vince Robertson of South Paris; a sister, Lillian Stearns of Norway; brothers, Raymond Patten of Cape Coral, FL and David Patten of Glouster, VA; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A graveside service was held at the Pleasant Pond cemetery in West Sumner on Sunday, November 7. Arrangements were under the care of Pine State Cremation Service, Greenville.
