Leland E. Crooker
1999-01-14

GRAY - Leland E. Crooker, P.E., 58 died Sunday, January 10, at his residence in Gray.

He was born in Mechanic Falls, the son of Leonard M. and Esther Millett Crooker.

Mr. Crooker graduated from the University of Maine, Orono in 1962 with a degree in structural civil engineering. He worked for the Department of Transpiration in the bridge division and for E.C. Jordan for several years and had a good reputation in the Pulp and Paper Industry. For the last six years, Mr. Crooker had been Manger of Engineering, Department of Facilities Management for the University of Southern Maine. Mr. Crooker had s small Consulting Service business. He was a licensed professional Engineer in Maine and New Hampshire.

In January 4, 1964, he married Leona Knight of Otisfield. Mr. Crooker's dad worked for the Maine Central Railroad and both Mr. Crooker and his dad enjoyed model railroading as a hobby.

Mr. Crooker was also a musician. He began his avocation at the age of 14, when he played in his dad's orchestra, The Rhythm Vagabonds. He played in several groups over the years - YNZ Big Band, North Yarmouth Marching Band, The Italian Heritage Band, the Music Makers, The Manduca Band and The Musicians in the State of Maine. While living in Clinton, Mr. Crooker was the choir director at the Brown Church of Gray. He also sang with the New Boston Singers. Mr. Crooker was a member of the Structural Engineers of Maine (SEAM).

Surviving are his wife of 35 years, Mrs. Leona Knight Crooker of Gray; two sons, Stephen of North Carolina and Dennis of New Gloucester; two grandchildren, Dennis Jr and Trevor Crooker; step grandchildren, Charles Parker and Darcy LeBreck; his mother, Esther Crooker of Mechanic Falls and a sister Linda Alcott of Tennessee.

Visitation will be 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Thursday at the First Congregational Church of Gray. A funeral will be held at 7 p.m., following the visitation. Pastor Douglas Hedstrom will officiate. Arrangement are by the Wilson Funeral Home of Gray. Memorial donations may be made to Gray Rescue, P.O. Box 258, Gray 04039.

Esther M. Crooker
2000-05-04

LEWISTON - Esther M. Crooker, 82 of Mechanic Falls died Thursday evening, April 27, at Central Maine Medical Center. She was born in Mechanic Falls, November 14, 1917, the daughter of Stephen and Mary Bridge Millett. She attended school in Mechanic Falls and graduated from Mechanic Falls High School in 1935.She had been a homemaker most of her life and was a member of Tri Town Senior Citizens,Mechanic Falls Methodist Church, Oxford Grange, Harrison Grange and the Pomona. Mrs. Crooker enjoyed her weekly card games with her friends. On October 25, 1939, she married Leonard Crooker, who died July 30, 1979. Survivors include a daughter, Linda Alcott of Greenville, TN; her long-time companion, Earl Briggs of Mechanic Falls; a sister, Ruth Deering of Mechanic Falls; brothers, William Ellery of Auburn and Robert Ellery of Poland; four grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Mrs. Crooker was predeceased by a son, Leland. Funeral services were held Sunday at the Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, Mechanic Falls with Interment in Maple Grove Cemetery, Mechanic Falls. Family and friends called at the funeral home Saturday. Those who wish may make memorial gifts in her memory to the Mechanic Falls Rescue Association, P.O. Box 163,Mechanic Falls, ME.

Clyde Cummings
1998-07-02

WEST PARIS - Clyde Cummings, 82, of West Paris died Saturday, June 20, 1998, at the Ledgeview Rehabilitation and Living Center.

He was born in South Paris on November 19, 1915, the son of William C. and Hazel Lord Cummings. He attended schools in South Paris. He married Virgilyn Barrett who died on March 31, 1998.

Mr. Cummings was a factory worker for most of his life at local manufacturers. He was a member of the South Paris Baptist Church and loved sports.

He is survived by a son, Roger, of Lewiston; a niece, Carlene Dustin of Oxford; two cousins, Betty Chapman of Gray and Marjorie McAllister of Gray; two grandchildren; four great nieces and nephews and four great-great nieces and nephews.

Graveside services were held on Friday, June 26 in the Riverside Annex cemetery in South Paris. Arrangements were under the direction of Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, South Paris.

Beatrice Mae Cummings
1998-09-24

NORWAY - Beatrice Mae Cummings, 97, of Norway died Sunday, September 20, 1998. at her residence.

She was born in Mars Hill on November 25 1900, the daughter of Robert Cowie and Mary Elizabeth (Smith) Ford. She was a graduate of Mars Hill High School in 1919 and Nasson College in 1922.

She married Stephen Jordan Cummings on December 4, 1926 in Norway. Mr. Cummings died on November 25, 1971.

Upon graduation from college, Mrs. Cummings was employed at Norway National Bank in Norway. She had also worked at Norway Savings Bank.

Mrs. Cummings was a member of the Stephens Memorial Hospital Auxiliary for many years where she served as a volunteer in the hospital coffee shop.

She was also a member of the Norway Unitarian-Universalist Church.

She is survived by two grandsons Stephen Edward Cummings and Robert Whitney Cummings, and three great grandchildren Amanda L. Cummings, Stephen 0. Cummings, and Garrett J. Cummings all of Norway. She was predeceased by her husband Stephen and a son, Stephen Ford Cummings, in 1969.

Funeral Services were held Tuesday at the Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, Norway with Rev. Elaine Tobak officiating.

Interment followed immediately at the Norway Pine Grove cemetery in South Paris. Donations in memory can be made to the Norway Memorial Library Main St. Norway, ME 04268.

Mrs. Annie M. Cummings
1999-11-25

SOUTH PARIS - Annie M. Cummings, 87, of South Paris died Tuesday, November 16, 1999 at Market Square Health Care Center.

She was born in Kezar Falls on May 13, 1912, the daughter of Frederick R. and Mercy Drew Merrill.

She graduated from Porter High School in 1931 and from the Hairdressing School of Portland in 1932.

She had worked as a housemother at Bates College and had worked in Charlotte, NC and Cape Cod, MA.

She had made her home in South Paris since 1984. She enjoyed crocheting, doll collecting and clowns.

Survivors include two sons, Joseph of Acton and Kent of Hebron; 16 Grandchildren and 10 great-Grandchildren.

Mrs. Cummings was predeceased by a daughter, Catherine, in 1992; a son, Wayne, in 1993 and a brother, Guy Merrill.

Funeral Services were held on Friday, November 19, 1999 at the Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, South Paris. Interment was in the Kezar Falls Burial Ground in Porter.

Memorial gifts in her memory may be made to the Market Square Health Care Center, Activity Fund, 12 Market Square, South Paris, ME 04281.

Elizabeth G. Croteau
2000-10-05

NORWAY- Elizabeth G. Croteau, 63, of Oxford died Tuesday, September 26, 2000, at Stephens Memorial Hospital after a short but courageous battle with cancer.

She was born in Lewiston, May 15, 1937, the daughter of Earland and Thelma Holt Allen and attended the schools of Norway.

She had been a homemaker most of her life and she enjoyed doing crafts.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law Mariann and Kenneth Bonang of Oxford; a son and his companion, Steven Seamon and Linda Caron of Oxford, three grandsons, Ron Strohl, Matthew Seamon and Cody Bonang; a special granddaughter Alexis Caron, two brothers, William Allen of Norway and Paul Allen of Oxford; two sisters, Elaine Curtis of Oxford and Linda Culter of Otisfield.

Mrs. Croteau was predeceased by two children, Judith Ann and Michael Seamon; a brother, Richard Allen and a sister Judith Allen.

Private graveside services were held with Interment in Riverside Cemetery,Oxford.

Those who wish may make memorial gifts in her memory to Oxford Rescue, P.O. Box 273, Oxford, ME. Arrangements were under the direction of Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, Norway.

Mary C. Crotty
1998-08-06

Mary C. (Kay) Crotty, 86, of Boothbay Harbor died Monday, August 3 at the Gregory Wing of St. Andrews Hospital.

Born July 2, 1912 in Boston, Mass., she was the daughter of William Edward and Mary C. Knecht Brace.

Mrs. Crotty attended schools in Boston and graduated from Massachusetts College of Pharmacy in 1936. She was a registered pharmacist of Massachusetts, Colorado and Maine. In the 1970s she and her husband moved to West Southport and in 1980 to Boothbay Harbor. She was predeceased by her husband Frank R. Crotty who died March 10, 1996.

There are no known relatives.

At the request of Mrs. Crotty there are no services. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Boothbay Region Humane Society, Inc., P.O. Box 583, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538. Arrangements are under the direction of Simmons & Harrington Funeral Home, Boothbay Harbor.

Jennie Hannah Crumpton
1998-03-05

TUPELO, MISSISSIPPI - Jennie Hannah Crumpton, 97, died Wednesday, February 25, 1998, at the North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo after a brief illness. Mrs. Crumpton was born in Sturgis, Mississippi on February 21, 1901, the youngest child of Ralph Erskine Hannah, Sr. and Frances Suzanna `Anna' Livingston Hannah.

She lived 91 years in Oktibbeha County before moving to Tupelo six years ago. She was married on December 16, 1921 to John Rives, Crumpton, Sr., whom she lived with for 69 years until his death in 1993.

She graduated from Longview High School in Oktibbeha County and from Mississippi State College for Women (now MUW) in 1923 with a B.A. in English.

Mrs. Crumpton assisted in organizing and was a charter member of the Trinity Presbyterian Church in Starkville. She was an ordained Elder in the Women's Church School Class for many years and was active in Women of the Church holding many offices in the local Church and Presbytery level.

She taught High School English at Sturgis, MS. She held membership for many years in the Cooperative Extension Service Home Demonstration Clubs and was an outstanding gardener.

A Memorial Service was held on Monday, March 2, 1998 at the Trinity Presbyterian Church in Starkville with the Rev. Sara Burress, the Rev. Roberta Martin and the Rev. Steve Davis officiating. The latter two ministers were encouraged and assisted by Mr. and Mrs. Crumpton to enter the ministry.

Private burial will be in the Wake Forest cemetery in Sturgis. Lee Memorial was in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include two daughters, Anna Katherine `Katy' Crumpton Bryson and her husband, Russell of Tupelo; Jane Hannah Crumpton McRae and her husband, Robert of Eagle Rock, Virginia; sons, Capt. John Rives Crumpton, Jr., U.S. Navy, Retired and his wife, Eve of Oxford; Rev. Robert Thomas Crumpton, D.M. and his wife, Nancy of Bartlett, Tenn.; Charles David Crumpton of Memphis, Tenn. and William Ralph `Bill' Crumpton, Ph.D. and his wife, Rae Nell of Jonesboro, Ark.; 15 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a daughter Nancy Lee Crumpton in 1928, five sisters and two brothers.

Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 794, Starkville, MS 39762 or to Hopewell Camp and Conference Center, 24 CR 231, Oxford, MS 38655.

Manuel Cueto
2000-06-22

He was born in Barre, VT, December 11, 1917, son of Angelo B. and Lucilla Villa Cueto. He was educated in Barre schools and served in the U.S. Army during W.W. II.

He was married to Myrtle Cueto who died in 1985. He worked as a mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service in Bridgeport, CT, retiring November 21, 1980.

He was a member of the American Legion Post in CT. He was also a member of Midtown Hurricane and Passe Temps clubs.

Survivors include a brother, Angelo and his wife, Patricia Cueto of Barre, VT; five grandchildren: Vincent and Alan Lima, both of Oxford, Patty Lima of Beacon Falls, CT, Tammy Houston of Sumner, and Darvin Grady of Oxford; and several great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a grandson, William Flynn and a great-grandson, Alan Lima Jr.

Michael S. Cuff
1999-05-27

RUMFORD - Michael S. Cuff, 20, died Saturday, May 22, as a result of a drowning accident. He was a resident of Farmer's Hill Road of East Andover.

Born in Vincenza, Italy on October 21, 1978, he was the son of Robert and Vickie (Chenery) Cuff Sr.

He was a graduate of Telstar Regional High School and a member of the Calvary Congregational Church in East Andover.

Survivors include his parents, Robert and Vickie Cuff, Sr., of East Andover; one brother, Robert Cuff Jr.; one sister, Miss Angela Cuff, both of East Andover; maternal grandmother, Mrs. Jeannette Chenery of East Andover; paternal grandmother, Mrs. Lois Nevel of Oakdale, CT; paternal grandfather, Jack Cuff of New York; paternal step-grandfather, Stephen Nevel of Oakdale, CT; paternal great-grandmother, Mrs. Mae Maddix of South Paris.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 26, at the Calvary Congregational Church in East Andover, with Reverend Duane Waite officiating. Interment was in the Woodlawn cemetery in Andover.
